    Grenn and the others saying their vows was the single most badass moment in the episode for me. I cried when Ygritte died. I cried when I saw that Grenn died, even though I knew he was doomed. Pyp, Grenn, Ygritte. 3 of the most overlooked badasses in Westeros.

      How can they just kill off characters that haven't died in the books yet? What if Martin decided to have a certain character show up again for something important later?

    • @MrJohncastillo1
      @MrJohncastillo1 10 лет назад +11

      Drannion Entertainment apparently martin has discussed the future books with the show runners and they pretty much know what goes down in the future so i'm sure they are free to kill off those characters if they wanted to

      ***** I've noticed that the only ones bitching are the ones who have read the books because the show was ballsy enough to change details.

    • @GettyNr9
      @GettyNr9 10 лет назад +9

      Theriot6592 Ballsy! LOL They completely changed stuff that was better unchanged. For example when they changed "Only Cat" to "Your sister" it was clear they were catering to morons who could give two shits about the names of characters on the show.

    • @GeorgiaTechPhenom
      @GeorgiaTechPhenom 10 лет назад +20

      Max Liam What you just pointed out is what makes it so ballsy genius. They try these moves, trying to catch book readers off guard, trying to keep the series as fresh as possible for everyone, and sometimes, it works perfectly, like in the Red Wedding, and like in this episode, and sometimes, it doesn't work at all, like not putting "Only Cat" in that episode. It's a give and take, and it's one of the things that, as a book reader, I appreciate more than anything else about this show. If you can't appreciate that, you are probably better off just sticking to reading the books, and dropping the show now, because this won't be the last time they make a "drastic" change.

    • @Theriot6592
      @Theriot6592 10 лет назад +16

      Max Liam That is a perfect example of the meaningless, pedantic bullshit book hipsters are getting their panties in a twist over.

      Max Liam
      That was the fucking dumbest complaint ever. If you wanted a fucking example, you could've talked about the "King of Quarth"-storyline (which was goddamn retarded).
      But changing "only cat" into "your sister" is NOT something worth whining about. It's still two words, it still has the same meaning, and it still has the same impact on the scene. If you mean to tell me that everything is ruined because of that one fucking line, just stop watching the fucking show.

    Funny how things turn out in GOT
    1. It was Grenn, Pyp and Sam who convinced Jon to go back to the wall when Ned was executed but if they ran away with Jon they'd still be alive
    2. Ygritted hesitated killing Jon the same way Jon hesitated killing her when they first met.
    3. Robb died because he choose love over duty while Jon suffers and has no problem dying because he choose duty over love
    4. the Men who defended the tunnel didn't want to become men of the night's watch yet in the end it was them who truly understood their vows opposite to men of the Kings guard who want to join yet never really understand their vows
    5. Sam was laughed at for being a coward during their arrival at castle black but when the free folk attacked it was Sam who was the calmest

    So many complaints in this comment section, if you hate the show as much as you say just stop watching. And PLEASE stop bitching about them changing things from the book; it's not the fucking book, it's the TV show. If they want to change something they can. Also, why is everyone up in arms about two minor characters dying? Get over it.

    "... while neither of the characters died on the show, we felt we needed some casualties among the people we really care about here." What the fuck? Did I actually just hear that? I would've defended D & D's choice on killing those two, but not after hearing that. George might be pretty ruthless at times when he _needs_ to be, but despite what people might say I don't think he kills characters for shock value. I'm extremely disappointed in both of them after hearing that.
    Don't get me wrong here, I have no problem with those two characters dying. They were always secondary and were just fun to see from time to time. But to admit to killing those two for shock value is really shameful for the entire adaptation/show. I feel that's not at all what George wants people to take away from his books.

    • @MegaMoose1989
      @MegaMoose1989 10 лет назад +25

      I really think they did it for budgetary reasons since those two characters only have a line or two in the next two books and are pretty much out of the picture.

    • @jackholander721
      @jackholander721 10 лет назад +11

      That could be so. It could also be because they never casted Donal Noye(a pretty big mistake if you ask me). It's still nonsense for them to think that there needs to be characters we care about getting killed off.
      One thing I did notice is that they decided to keep Edd alive. That's probably for another character's death.

    • @hupenpeter
      @hupenpeter 10 лет назад +95

      I don´t think they are killed for shock value. But coming out of a battle this big without any casualties the crowd cares about would take away from the scale and drama this conflict means. I really liked them, but i really like the fact, that the show reimagines the plot. This way you get such surprises. It might be for the worse from time to time, but in general i´m more excited about the show this way.

    • @Ghalnin
      @Ghalnin 10 лет назад +44

      They didn't just pull Grenn's death out of their asses though. His whole last stand was in the book, but it was done by Donal Noye, who is probably and equally important character that just happened to be left out of the show. Someone had to fill that void. The only two options otherwise would've been to either have him survive the battle with the giant, which to me just doesn't feel right, or cut the scene altogether, which would've been a very important moment to cut.

    • @MichaelBlitzkrieg09
      @MichaelBlitzkrieg09 10 лет назад +7

      Jack Holander I believe they did not do that for shock value, they did it for a couple of reasons, such as, Jon Snow being more lonely after this battle, and more importantly being more realistic and showing the extent of the battle. It would just be less realistic if the Brothers suffered any less casualties, or if only not well known brothers died, when facing this kind of an enemy.

  • @ITzJaYOhh
    @ITzJaYOhh 10 лет назад +105

    They killed Grenn and Pyp because they want Jon to feel/seem more lonely on the Wall next season. They're not just doing it to do it. They have good reasoning behind the decision.

    • @MegaMoose1989
      @MegaMoose1989 10 лет назад +27

      Also they have a huge cast, so the budget comes into place, characters are trimmed. Especially when they do not have much lines or story plot in the next two books.

    Pyp and Grenn are two very likable characters. They are just secondary characters but a treat to behold. They are Jon's closest friends. Grenn stood up for Jon multiple of times and Pyp was just so normal and innocent. The two of them are just so sweet. I just... Yeah, it affects me that they got killed despite them actually surviving in the books but I like it that they died with honor. They both came from nothing but they held on to their vows and died as men of the night's watch. It's beautiful.

    Wow. So many people pissed at Grenn and Pyp. They wanted to kill them to show that there were casualties for the Watch, that this attack did take something from them, because in the books nobody major on the Watch died, so this gives it a bit more weight and impact. So they decided to kill two characters that the show watchers might recognize as those 2 dudes who hang around Jon Snow sometimes.
    Also, Edd is alive so "Edd, fetch me a block" should still be there next season... :D

      When Jon is made Lord Commander Janos refuses to do as he's told. So Jon says he will be hanged. He then says for Edd to fetch him the chopping block so that he can execute him himself. Following Ned's lead "the man who gives the sentence should swing the sword." That's not the exact quote but you get what I mean.

    Even though this episode, (season 4 episode 9,) only takes place at Castle Black, SO MUCH important shit happens in this and the next episode.
    Ygtitte dies, Grenn and Pyp both die, (along with many others,) and in episode 10 Brienne fights the Hound, Stannis surrounds the Wildlings north of the Wall and captures Mance, and Jaime helps Tyrion escape and after he kills Tywin and Shae, he and Varys both set sail to Pentos.
    And I'm fairly certain I'm forgetting something.

    This episode reminds me of the game Skyrim with the Snow, Wildlings, Mammoths and Giants. I wouldn't be surprise the mammoth scene was base off from the game because I don't remember reading about mammoths from the books unless i missed that part from the book. Great episode and I enjoy this very much. Gate scene with those 6 men standing at the gate against the giant to hold the giant back was the best hero scene I seen so far.

      you miss the point. what he's saying is that, if that's some other character we have there, someone we don't know, an extra perhaps, the audience wouldn't care much about the result of the fight. would you care if you see two strangers brawling on the street? no. but if one of them is your friend, you'll care. that's what storytelling is about, having readers/watchers care about fictional characters.

    • @coolman5242
      @coolman5242 10 лет назад

      RileyRivalle2 Then what's the point of having them BE characters in the first place? Killing them off doesn't increase the impact to prove how bad the casualties are. The fact that this is made for adults displays the fact that they are intelligent enough to know the concept of how the battle ended up. Especially the fact that they BARELY survived the first wave of wildlings from tons to come. Jon even stated that their current overall condition, the Night's Watch could only survive about 2 or 3 more waves.
      I understand Pyp dying, since it shown how an inexperienced warrior would most likely die. But what was the point of killing off Grenn. To show how dangerous a Giant could be? They already proven that as they almost destroyed a door that's been around for a thousand years. That was basically their role for being expendable tools on doing that. Then one got angry from his comrades death and foolishly went on an anger rush, relinquishing his role. It seems silly that about 6 of the most skilled Night's Watchmen couldn't take down a berserk behemoth without completely dying, despite being fully prepared for this. I'm not saying Grenn or any of the men he brung along should've came out unscathed, but there was a reason the author didn't add this silly scene to the book version.

      The Season 3 finale had Melisandre advising Stannis to march to the Wall, upon Davos' deciphering of Sam's letter. They couldn't get anywhere near marching there in between then and now due to having a small remaining army and bad finances (which were restored by the Iron Bank of Braavos when Stannis and Davos went there to plead their case).

    All the people whining about Grenn and Pyp are foolish. Building an emotional connection with viewers and characters to a storyline is not done for 'shock value'. This isn't The Walking Dead here, where they deliberately kill off important characters just to get you outraged. They were decently liked, and given truly epic deaths that will progress Jon's storyline. It's not even that far off canon, and more appropriate here than elsewhere. GRRM tends to write surprising deaths into his work to shake up his characters, and he did approve these deaths.

      - Didn't mind them dying. They had good death scenes, especially Grenn.
      - I didn't find them soppy. The Sam/Gilly stuff wasn't my favorite, but you need quieter moments in episodes like these.
      - There's no way they could have fit the whole confrontation at the wall into 51 minutes. I love Stannis, but he can wait.

      Yeah I agree that it would of been way cooler if we could of actually seen Gren kill the giant and live, but I think Pyp's death was needed because it was a good emotional scene with him and Sam but the fact we didn't even get to see Gren die makes his death feel kinda lazy and unneeded

    "When you're nothing - you have no more reason to be afraid" So much wisdom in this episode.... In my mind, this quote applies to fear itself and how when embody something (with the mind) - fear can manifest itself in whatever it is that you think about.
    Jon Snow does brief on love very well, though it seems as if he doesn't know what he talking about - two become one when you lye with a man or woman you love and anyones who experienced love knows this to be true. "And what did it get me, an arrow 4 inches from my heart" - Anyone whose loved and lost knows this to be true as well :P

    This was an incredible achievement of an episode. Sometimes I forget that this is a tv-show and not a blockbuster film. Ygritte dying was heartbreaking, Grenn's speech in the tunnel was fantastic, Sam- and Jon's arcs was brought full-circle, the giants, the mammoth and the wall-spike was fucking awesome, I actually started caring for Alliser Thorne (whose fight with Tormund was sick, btw)... There was so much in this episode, I think it surpassed Blackwater. And I never thought I'd say that about any episode of TV ever.

    But this is what makes this show/series better and different and more realistic than all others. Shows like the walking dead for example, HARDLY a main character gets killed off, unless it's a finale of some sort. This show isn't about keeping the main characters alive for the fans to love, it's about reality and that good doesn't always win

    grenn had one of the best deaths. that was so badass with the vows. i was sobbing before it even happened because they were walking into certain death but it was so fucking heroic and they got the job done. one of my favorite deaths right up there to Ned and Catelyn. ned telling yoren to save arya was such a nice touch and catelyn slitting that girls throat in an attempt to save robb was insane. like wtf cat that girl is about your daughters age. whether they failed or succeeded those were some pretty great deaths because of the things they do right before it.

    To the people that complain about Grenn and Pyp dying, I think it was great. Grenn took the role of Donal Noye, and Noye probably had the most badass death in the books, which was now given to Grenn. Pyp was a skinny steward and he was in the courtyard, the freaking heat of battle.

    D&D have, in my opinion, done far too many amazing things with this series to be called bad screenwriters. Killing off both Pyp and Grenn was a little harsh, but it definitely packed the emotional punches needed. Ygritte's death was too much anticipated to have the same shock factor, not to mention the spoilers they know non book readers are going to see that will take away from their original reactions. Also, to make the battle's sacrifices more believable and the large death scale, they had to kill characters known and loved by the audience, simple as that. Ygrittes death was extremely well done, the little smile Jon had as he saw her even though she was about to kill him ... that was heart wrenching.

      Also they can't have actors for every character from the books, so they sometimes squeeze 2-3 characters into a single person. So disappointment will come for those left out... where was the one-armed smith? :(
