(Mostly) Everything about scavengers

- This was mostly everything about *scavengers*, not really
Music: Korok Forest (night) - Breath of the Wild OST
Edit:
It is unknown whether or not scavengers are really wearing masks (I'd like to believe they were, masks are cool)
Players who first encounter scavengers or players with neutral reputation with have warning shots through at them by the scavengers which purposely miss them (please don't kill them for that)
When you encounter a scavenger, drop your weapon
Scavenger tolls can be payed with other items, not just pearls. Everything except weapons have a value, pearls being a 10, vulture masks a 4 among other things, the price required to pay a toll may differ with reputation status
TEXT BELOW COPIED FROM WIKI: rainworld.mira...
Scavenger behavior has the most notable variation under the Reputation system, allowing them to become either the player's most potent allies or most fearsome hunters. There is both a local reputation value for the Scavengers in a given region, and a global reputation value, the latter of which can be observed through the Chieftain passage. Unlike other creatures with reputation, local actions affect the global reputation scale greatly.
By trading with Scavengers and saving them from harm, reputation can be gained with them. As reputation rises, Scavengers become less aggressive, may actively attempt to save Slugcat from harm, and, once trusted enough, begin allowing for free passage through Tolls and items to be taken from Treasuries without consequence. The benefits of positive reputation do not extend to any tamed Lizards the player may have, and Scavengers are aggressive towards them like any other Lizard.
Inversely, if repeatedly stolen from, harmed and ignored when in danger, reputation is lowered, and Scavengers become more aggressive. This typically only manifests in more protective and hostile Scavengers, potentially even killing Slugcat on-sight, but if infractions are committed repeatedly, reputation can eventually drop to a point where Scavengers actively seek Slugcat out, even sending kill-squads to the player's general location.
One more intricacy to note with Scavenger reputation is that individuals each have their own opinion of Slugcat, meaning that if care is taken to be friendly to a particular Scavenger they may be more inclined to follow and trade well compared to others in their pack. This can also lead to random reputation changes when the leader of a group dies and a new scavenger with a differing opinion takes over.
Scavenger reputation is measured on a scale of -100 to 100, and reputation may only change by a maximum of ±50 each cycle. Any reputation gain becomes exponentially smaller as reputation goes lower into the negatives, but is linear from 0-100. When reputation is below 0, a small amount of reputation is gained passively each cycle provided no interactions with Scavengers are had. This passive increase scales up the closer reputation is to the default 0, maxing out at +10 reputation per cycle. Reputation loss is multiplied based on the number of witnesses, but reputation gain is not, unless saving a Scavenger from a threat.
At ≥50 reputation, Tolls can be passed without paying, at the cost of reputation.
At ≥90 reputation, items may be freely taken from Treasuries and Tolls may be passed for free without reputation loss.
BrandFlakes video: • Analyzing the Scavenge...
CORE:
The more scavengers like you the more you can get from them, they run on a reputation system which can increase or decrease based on your actions towards them from -100 (negative slowly increases to 0 as long as you don't do anything to antagonise the scavengers at the end of each cycle when you hibernate) to +100 starting as 0 (unless you're a hunter -35, spearmaster -45, or artificer locked at -100) and as a monk you have an improved reputation gain with the scavengers
As hunter/spearmaster, your reputation with the scavengers is low enough to be kill on sight, however your reputation with them slowly increases to 0 if you don't do anything against them so by the time you interact with them they (might) not kill you on sight. Scavengers might still throw rocks at you at low reputation but at least they won't use their spears.
Scavengers most likely won't kill on sight, if you see them raise their spears it's probably best to run however, you can reduce the chances of them seeing you as a threat, lower your weapons (down+shift), crouch down and don't move around too much, when they stop pointing their spears at you or stop holding their spears up in the air, they don't see you as a threat. Scavengers may also throw their spears as a warning shot at which point you are probably interacting with an aggressive scavenger so it might be better to try interacting with them in another cycle.
Scavengers will try to communicate with you with arm gestures! They may shake their arm at a toll saying "pay up" or raise their spears to warn you to stay back. They can also point or paw at the ground if you are holding an item that they really want (vulture/king vulture mask, pearl, other valuable items).
Scavenger merchants are well, merchants. They are friendly and don't kill you on sight, not to say that other scavengers nearby them won't, you can trade with them for any item that they are holding, e.g. karma flower for an explosive spear, any sort of trade will increase scavenger reputation but trading items back won't. Pearls are the best item to trade with scavengers (color doesn't matter) making them drop all items that they are currently holding.
Scavengers also have personalities! This will affect how they interact with you, whether seeing you as a non-threat or being very cautious around you, killing you if you get too close without indicating that you aren't a threat, They may also make the scavengers better in combat by improving dodge ability and increasing their speed)
You can increase your reputation with the scavengers by:
Trading:
Dropping an item in front of a scavenger with down+shift to get something of equal value, each item has an item value with the scavengers, spears have a value of 2 meaning it can be traded for a lantern or cherry bomb, dropping a pearl (value 10) will make the receiving scavenger drop all their items. Funnily enough if a scavenger finds a pearl you picked up but left behind within the same cycle you still improve relations with the scavengers.
Paying tolls:
Tolls require a payment of 10 in order to pass normally. This can increase or decrease depending on scavenger reputation. Pearls and king vulture masks have a value of 10, so it's already handy to keep a pearl in your stomach in case you need to go past a toll.
Saving them from predators
Reputation gain is multiplied by # of witnesses. So if a lizard or monster kelp grabs onto a scavenger and you attack the creature to make them let go, you gain reputation.
Perks of high reputation:
Lowered toll costs:
Rather than a pearl, they might accept a karma flower (5) and a spear (2) which has lower value to them. (default cost is 10)
Free toll passage
At the cost of reputation if your reputation with them is high enough >50 however if your reputation is really high >90 you can go through tolls for free though scavengers will still ask you to pay you won't have to.
Reduced aggression
You won't have to indicate to scavengers that you aren't a threat and they won't kill you on sight
Protection
If you are threatened by a creature, nearby scavengers may attack that creature in order to save you from death.
Free items!
Scavenger storerooms are very hard to find, they are hiding in place of lizard tunnels, you can find them easily if you see many scavengers walk out of a single tunnel at once though this is unlikely, taking from these rooms without sufficient reputation will incur a reputation penalty while having very high reputation with the scavengers will allow you to take anything from the store rooms such as grenades, pearls, explosive spears, and items that are relevant to the location e.g. spore puffs in the Farm Arrays.
You can lose reputation by: (multiplies with the amount of witnesses there are)
Threatening scavengers :
Throwing spears or rubbish towards them and in general just scaring them
Attacking/killing scavengers:
Speaks for itself, hitting a scavenger will turn them and all nearby scavengers hostile towards you
Ignoring scavengers in peril:
A scavenger is getting attacked by a lizard, if you do nothing your reputation will decrease
Not paying tolls:
Without high enough reputation, not paying the toll can lead to the nearby scavengers becoming aggressive towards you
Stealing from scavenger storerooms:
Explosive spears are great and all but it might be good to wait until your reputation is high enough to take all the explosive spears you would ever need
Perks of low reputation:
Kill on sight Slugcat (Bro this slug thing sucks lets spear it the moment we see it!)
Significantly harder to gain trust to improve reputation
Since they will try to kill you on sight, it's much harder to perform actions to improve your reputation with scavengers
The streets of London kill squads (Oi bruv you see this explosive tipped knife, yeah im gonna shank ya till you go back to that karma screen yeah?)
On a more serious note, scavengers will actively hunt you down with high quality gear such as explosive spears, grenades, (downpour dlc) and on occasion elite scavengers with electric spears and singularity bombs, the scavengers will follow you into areas where they usually won't spawn with a few exclusions, killing them further reduces reputation making it even harder for you to befriend the scavengers.
And that's rain world scavengers in a nutshell. Don't be an asshole or uhh you might die. Happy cycles
Update 1:Added more info about personalities and a bunch of other stuff and corrected some wrong information.

scavs actually dont wear masks, those are just their natural faces!
Interesting....... I always assumed they wore masks because of how distinct their faces looked, good to know!
@@Ish12 Some do in fact wear masks, like the elite ones from the downpour dlc, but underneath those masks they have their normal scavenger face like all the others.

Has there ever been confirmation? I know there's a lot more evidence for it being their faces, but we've never heard outright, have we?

Did you know that you can actually pay tolls with objects other than pearls? Relative to pearls, with a value of 10, overseer eyes have a value of 7 and spears have a value of 3 each. Lanterns have a value of about four, and karma flowers 5. Vulture Masks are 8, but King Vulture Masks are 12. If you give the toll scavs a spear and an overseer eye, they will let you pass!
Some more toll info:
Items at a toll are owned by scavs. If the scavengers ignore your pearl, it's probably because you took something from the scavs at the toll, lowering your relative balance with the scavs. In other words, don't touch any of their stuff, or if you do, give them extra items to pay the full price.
Scav merchants use the same monetary system. You can trade them two spears for a lantern or an overseer eye for an explosive spear.
In conclusion, scavengers are always measuring your debt with them. Do not touch their property.
Vulture masks value is five like the carma flower and kings mask is 10, nothing goes over 10
an inspector eye can also be used to pass the toll, since they have a value of 10 according to the wiki, but they're very hard to come by. doesn't seem like the gourmand can cheese it by crafting them, either (although why would you, when you could craft a pearl instead?)

i mean its common sense. i dont know if the devs actually made scavs really react like that or just accident but like imagine someone has a gun and their jumping around and running while pointing the gun at you even though its a accident so yeah.
Small correction, they swing their arm from you to their back at tolls when you payed. And when they shake their hands it to demand payment. The best way to pay toll is wait a bit for them to gesture for the payment and then give the pearl as if you throw the pearl and then cross immediately they may still kill you and even lower rep as you crossing without paying. I find this behavior very neat
You're suppose to wait for one of the Scavs to grab the pearl, it being on the ground doesn't count as payment.
the scavs aren’t assholes, everyone just fails to acknowledge what they want you to do. They want you to lay down to show you aren’t a threat, and they will naturally be more inclined to attack you if you are armed. Dropping your spear is a great way to make the scavs like you and trust you very easily. More so if you give them pearls as gifts to any wandering scavs

God, I love scav ai. In my current world I've maxxed my reputation but before that I remember dropping my spear when they give me a warning and seeing them drop their warnings so I can pass safely.
Very sad that you left out the fact that they will try to throw warning shots aimed to miss you on purpose in an attempt to scare you off instead of killing you outright when your reputation is neutral/not too low despite being lucky and getting a scav to do like 3 or so point-blank warning shots at you in this very same video, 2 of which could've been lethal.
Half the people I see encounter scavengers for the first time start killing them pretty fast because they spook them and get warning shots, but assume it was an actual attempt to kill them that simply missed.

One of the coolest experiences I've had in the game, i was unarmed and stuck in a pit, too panicky to do the right inputs for a backflip or smthn to climb out due to a lizard chasing me from a previous screen, and a scav threw a spear perfectly for me to grab onto and jump out before the lizard could get me. Scav tolls can also be paid with other objects, but typically pearls are the best to pay with since you'll typically have to give them a BUNCH of different items to meet the the value of the toll. (Which is equivalent to one pearl.
Also, scavengers are not addicted to pearls. The reason they need pearls is because at a scavenger toll, there is a chieftain mask with strings on it, and they want to decorate it with pearls.
Nah, porls are like money to us, yes we use porls to put as decoration in the Chieftain mask and in tolls passages but is not the reason that we get porls.

- you can pay scav tools whit others objects and not only pearls
- scavengers have different personalitys
- you can understand the feeling of the scavengers by theyr eyes, big mean scared, normal mean not scared
- scavengers can be good or bad at combact, some scavenger may be scared about others creatures, other may be really fast to trhow spears.
- elite scavs are rare type of scavengers, they wear an actuall mask and are equipped whit eletric spears or even gravity bombs
- scavengers merchants are olways full equipped, and are good for trading
- scavengers will attack overseers, in fact they value theyr eyes too like pearls
- if you have a medium reputation whit scavengers they will attack you only if you move too fast Around them, makimg them scaryed, or throw rocks at you, if you have a pretty good reputation, they will not attack you
- if you have the chieftain passage, you will not forced to pay at scav tools
It isn't the passage itself, it is simply having high reputation.
If you run through enough tools without paying or do stuff to lower your rep you will eventually start to lose rep with the Scavs but keep the passage.
I've seen many people got it wrong. Scavs don't point their spears specifically as a form of warning, they're just the equivalent of reaching their hands to you (when unarmed). They point their hands when you have something they value like pearls or better spears

Does Hunter start with a negative reputation or smth? Cause I just started playing as Hunter and was heading over to the first scavenger post I saw, I had a pearl and was about to give it to them but one of them just stabbed me before I even went there ;-;
Yes because of artificer
@@frougeeArtificer is the one who started the red racism
@@frougeearti was red

@@waltermarine3248 yes
let me explain my knowledge of scavengers! (very based)
-theyre awful
-will try to kill you for no reason
-will take a lot of pearls to make them accept you
-if you try helping them against enemies they might (probably) kill you
what you need against the scavs:
-never trust them!! even if you have chieftain they still might hit you on accident
-they dont like iggy keep your overseer away from them
-make sure theyre dead before going close to them they still might hit you
yay thats all
Well Uhhhh... You forgot that we are not brainless beasts... And you forgot that we have family and feelings...

to be fair artificer's kid stole a pearl and the other kids death was her fault
... okay, let's imagine you're from a tribe and all your money is out in the open, here comes a child of a slugcat you've never seen before and steals your most prized porl, Obviously I was going to kill that slugcat and his kid lol
I watch videos to hear and see visuals.
I read book to read and imagine.
I do not watch videos to see visuals and read at the same time.
Then don't watch the video 😅
@@Ish12 I am guessing you don't take feedbacks very well.

They are my enemies, all creatures are as I wage war on them all. It's hella fun to have a couple of mates on and just wage war on them.
I don’t like scavengers
Jost don't wharch the video lol
