Using UNDO and REDO on a single loop pedal

  • (this video) Using undo and redo on a single loop pedal stemmed from questions by several of you, so I hope you dig it. Using the x4 to demonstrate: amzn.to/2Zb9xGV (even though it's not actually a single loop pedal (it has two separate loops - I'm just not using the second one at all in this video).
    For 911aday who asked about a specific question - what you would need to do, is record your chord part as your first loop, then your overdub would be the percussion, and you would simply 'undo' the percussion part so that you are left with the original chords (as per example one), and then later on in the song, you can 'redo' the percussion. A little bit of setup time, but works pretty well if you only have a single track loop pedal.
    This can be a SUPER creative way to build dynamics into your live looping, AND find ways to mash up songs rather than starting totally from scratch each and every time you loop a song.
    It's basically a 'how to use undo and redo on a loop pedal' guide, but making them useful, rather than just for mistakes

    Very helpful David. Think we’ll have to start calling you the “Loop Pedal Whisperer” 😎

    Very nice tutorial. I specifically bought the Boss FS-6 to go with my RC-1 (and RC-3) in order to have dedicated stomps for Undo and Stop.
    It makes a world of difference with your timing when you don't have to deal with that Hold-to-Undo or Double-Stomp-to-Stop nonsense.

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  5 лет назад +1

      @@davidshanhun, exactly. The less hopping around like a jack-rabbit while trying to perform in front of people the better I figure. Less to go wrong.
      Along those looping lines, I've also been playing with Zenaud.io ALK2 lately, and been having a ton of fun. It's a "loop sequencer" where you plan out your loops ahead of time in the computer, so no pedal hopping. It also give you the ability to do verse, chorus and even bridges in a live-looping environment. You should check it out for shows as it keeps all the musicianship but automates the tedium/errors of stomping on pedals at precisely the right time.

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  5 лет назад

      Hey Richard thanks! All guitars are a bit different for percussion and sound. Mine doesn't have a secondary mic, just the under saddle pickup. I'm lucky there is a good bottom end to it though. I would turn your amp up a bit and spend some time at home experimenting with different spots on the guitar to see what sounds you get, and also experiment with setting the EQ of your pickup (if it has one). Sometimes changing these settings can help with the percussion options you can get :) - Let me know if you have any joy! (also, some guitars are just pretty tough to get good percussion sounds from - I had a Tanglewood for a while but it was a real challenge to create percussion from so I can relate).

      @@davidshanhun i am thinking since you can only record one verse on one pedal... when the song becomes quite boring... you will need to have a second pedal... for variation... then to come back to first record... first pedal.... otherwise with one pedal the range of songs that can be played is quite limited... maybe then we'll need at least two channel loop pedal...

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  5 лет назад +1

      @@danielu3407 Makes sense. What I would do is record a rhythm track as the first track. Then overdub your verse, and you can simply use 'undo' to remove the verse chords, then you still have the rhythm track. That way you can play the chords for the chorus live whilst still having the rhythm track you created at the start :)

    awesome videos! I didn't realize the OC3 pedal was a legit way to record bass tracks with a looper. . I've always had it for playing CKY songs and realized it went great with my RC3. A friend would make fun of me for not having an actual bass but now I feel justified. Anyway, I gave up trying to use undo/redo like you do because the delay makes it hard for me to play live and hold the pedal down at the right time to have the track come back in at the start of a bar. any tips?

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  5 лет назад

      Hey Jake, yeah OC-3 is sweet for bass tracks - have you tried it out yet for looping? My best suggestion for using the undo/redo and getting the timing - is learn one song for it first and work out roughly where to start holding the pedal so that it comes in on the beat. If anything, go with being slightly early for the 'redo' and slightly late if anything for the 'undo' (ideally being on time is great, but you honestly don't have to get it perfect to have a pretty good impact with this, and as you do it more you'll get better!)
