    Looper pedal tips or loop pedal tips are here! The loop pedal i'm using is this (and it's amazing): amzn.to/2kZMUDV
    Join me on PATREON here: / davidshanhun
    Today's Thursday Tech Tips video is '3 sneaky looper pedal tips to improve your looping shows' and I SERIOUSLY hope you spend a bit of time on these. They will massively help your live shows - and hopefully inspire some more creativity about how you can build your loops (either at home or for shows and gigs).
    Oh and the Boss Octave pedal is a must also if you're a solo one man band: amzn.to/2xZDvFA
    I know I know... for those of you that follow me this is being uploaded on a Monday... I had some issues with editing software hence the delay.
    Anyway, let me know which loop pedal you're using and whether these tips are something you do anyway, or if you learnt something new on how to use a loop pedal.
    I'll be back this Thursday with another vid!
    --also thanks - forgot to write that the iphone app I use for my loops is iMaschine 2.

    I can see the hard work and focus required to reach your level of ability and your natural talent is evident. I can surely appreciate what it takes to be a loop artist.
    I've been a gigging musician for 44 years. But, although I've long wanted to, I've never performed a whole solo acoustic show. That's about to change. I have a three hour show prepared and would like to implement some very basic looping on some songs. I can't say my plans will never change, but at this point, I'm not looking toward ever being a loop performer, just a solo gigging musician.
    Again, I see and sincerely commend loop performers for all they do. But I've never been able to enjoy a full looping show. You've touched a few times on why and I commend you for making an effort in that regard.
    But the reasons I can't stay engaged for a whole looper show are:
    1. It takes far too long to get to the entertaining part of a song.
    2. Regardless of how proficient the performer is at seamlessly multitasking, he or she seems disconnected from the audience, unable to fully engage.
    3. Instead of an entertaining mix of beloved, average length, classic covers, every show becomes a test of endurance for the listener where every one among the minimized number of songs is drudgery while waiting for the payoff.
    4. Dynamics, mood, and lyrical meaning are all but lost because every song takes on a droning sound like a 10 minute electro dance track.
    When I go to a solo show, I'm not looking for a full band experience. When I want that, I go see a band. What I want from a solo performer is to be moved by dynamics, touch, and lyrics so effectively that I feel the experience of a song as if I've lived it myself. To me, that's lost in looping.
    But looping IS far better than backing tracks.

      Thanks for sharing your perspective on this! I hope you have fun including a few loops that fit your vibe into your show and enjoy doing the solo show vibes for the first time!

    Nice,practical and musical tips! The most important takeaway for me is to not bore the crap out of your audience while you're building tracks but arrange it so that it's musical from the start. Adding stops is another great tip. My tendency is to play full songs and then noodle on them but hopefully the picking/chording of the song is interesting enough to listen too.

    Great tips, I'm just beginning at this with an rc 300, I like it a lot and I couldn't agree more with you! I have watched too many people that think they have to add everything they have to the loop and as it comes in it sounds enchanting but after about 30 seconds it just sounds irritating. So, that's what I want to learn is how less is more, the basic lay down to play through out and what to add and delete and redo as you go through.
    Thanks again.

    The playing had EVERYTHING to do with the tutorial. You would be great without the looper, but you are greater still with it. I have looped for years and yes I use the dickens out of recording first verse while singing and it is ready for my solo....which is to break up looper numbing. I really like your stop before chorus. I also love your voice, song choice, guitar choice, guitar playing and treatment of each song. Yes these are somebody else's songs but you make them your signature version. I have always wanted a way to do free falling because it get's requested sooo much. I think I am going to borrow liberally that version. Thanks for being a real player and sharing your time and talents. Cheers!

    These 3 tips are priceless in avoiding monotonous loops and are exactly why you are my go-to channel to learn looping. EXCELENTE VIDEO, !!! eres el primer looperman que sigo y ojo hace muchos años que tengo un rc-3, lo loco del looper es que mientras mas lo practicas mas desafios te encuentras sobretodo cuando ya lo incorporas en tu "staff" creativo, te felicito son tips que funcionan 100%, hay mucho trabajo en lograr que salgan lo menos artificiales posibles, siempre la idea es que suene lo mas "organico" posible ...el loop es solo un "recurso" una segundo ( o tercera o cuarta, o quinta guitarra, bajo o percusión) que nos puede acompañar, gracias por tu experiencia eres muy generoso y eso siempre se agradece

    This is geat. He addresses two of my biggest complaints whenever i see a looper. Tip one and two are indispensible guides (tip two helps you with tip one). The monotony is real, and I hate when someone starts a song and then a minute or two later they finally start the song.

    I have a horse-kick pro stompbox that runs in the same signal chain as the guitar, so I can record percussion and guitar together 👍 Only thing is you’re pretty restricted in the rhythms you can make, but if there was a product where you can make percussion with your feet, it would cut the looping time in half. Good hack.

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  5 лет назад

      ooh yeah this is a great option. Becomes a funny one of how many different grooves and rhythms your brain can handle and a whole lot of practise to make them smooth the more complicated they get between guitar/vocals and footwork eh haha! A guy that drums amazingly whilst playing guitar and singing live is Shaun Kirk - check him out (he's running a electronic kit, with foot triggers as his pedals).

      Brian Donoghue - I agree with you! The first solo I heard using a looper and many since then annoyed me and gave me a bad impression of loopers period!. It would take them 5 minutes to build the loop, 3 minutes singing the song, another 5 minutes noodling around on the guitar, then 3 more minutes singing and finally the end. Good grief that is boring and monotonous as hell. At that rate you'd only need to know 12 songs for a 4 hour gig...lmao!

  • @TheSuperdad5
    @TheSuperdad5 2 года назад +1

    David superb! 1. Could you give more info on phone apps you use drums and set lists? 2. Explain bit sample rates for loopers and what do you prefer 16k or 24k? And 3. How would you add a keyboard if you played in loop setup?

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  2 года назад

      hey Randy! The phone app I use is called iMaschine 2. I don't use any other apps or use specific set lists unless it's a ticketed type originals show. Sample rates for loopers in most cases I haven't had cause to be concerned about it - I'm using the RC300 currently and I'm happy with the sound - although the RC600 is out and has much improved audio, so I'll be curious to see how much I notice a change down the track.
      For adding a keyboard I think there's two options - one is you have your guitar and keyboard go into a mixer before the loop pedal which works well (although is a bit of extra gear). Or depending on your looper you can go into a spare input or an AUX input etc - you might have to buy a different cable or adaptor to do this, but that's the most common solution I've seen! Hope that helps brother!

    Rather than downtuning the guitar for the bass, either plug in a second guitar, a small body electro acoustic bass, or just whacking up the bass and rolling off all the treble on your guitar is enough. The octave shifter doesn't always work. It's ok going up but down, it often sounds a but out of tune where it slows down the wave to drop the pitch.

    • @davidshanhun

    Great tips and video! Couldn't agree more on shortening the "loop build". I watch all kinds of RUclips loopers and long intro's can easily suck the life out of a performance.
    I am currently using a Boss RC-300 and love having the flexibility of 3 separate tracks. I just recently added a Roland GR-55 to the mix and am having fun with the endless possibilities it provides.

    • @AidanMooreacoustic
      @AidanMooreacoustic 5 лет назад

      A lot of that is down to the limitations of the looper. I use the RC300, which allows you to have 3 channels, and you can have a different length loop on each channel. Apart from Ed Sheeran's custom build, it's the ONLY pedal on the market that gives you that option, meaning you're not having to construct long and perfectly in time percussive loops to fit with your vocal and guitar loops, which you usually want to be 4/8/16 bars. Happy to share how you unlock that little feature in the RC300 if it's of any use. Once you get that down, there's no other pedal really for in depth live looping gigs. PS great video mate!

    What I don't understand about looping is, what do you do when you want to jump to a different chord progression maybe for a chorus with different chords or a bridge section. If you start a new loop for those then it'll just sound empty... Hope you have tips for this.

      Hey Ivan - I did a video on exactly this!! It's an interesting one to navigate and there are a few ways to do it. what you mentioned is the biggest frustration I have with looping for particular songs! Here's the vid anyway - be keen to know if you can use these ideas for what you do when the chord sequence changes. ruclips.net/video/xHGrMIk1NpI/видео.html

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  4 года назад +1

      Hey Steve, I just have a reverb on my vocal, and same for guitar with a bit of compression. For my acoustic sound then I keep those settings very constant, and the vocal stays pretty much the same for me, with the occasional fun change for interest etc, but I don't try and match or change each tone for each song specifically. For the guitar lead, I have an overdrive running with a bit of delay also. 😊

    Very cool. I'm using the RC-300 and am slowly adding a decent repertoire to it. I've probably only scratched the surface of what I can do with it, but it's already working well for me and bringing songs back to me that are really quite dull without it. Good tips - I stumbled upon the dropping things out by accident one time when I hit the wrong button and stopped the rhythm guitar and it sounded great when the it came back in again. Dynamics baby!

    So, why dont you pre record a few tracks in a multitrack recorder, plug it through the PA and do your stuff over? Voice and Guitar

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  5 лет назад +3

      Personally I like the fact that each time I record and do it live, it's just that little bit different. I find using tracks or pre-recorded stuff becomes very static really quickly for me, and then I become a bit of a robot playing haha! Awesome for specific live shows where I want something really particular. I did exactly this for a wedding recently where I wanted to lay the groove down in advance at home and have it nicely sorted, then just kick straight into the song. It is a great way to have a polished live show though!

    Some very cool tips and some very cool playing as well. I just can't understand why some people felt the need to hit the thumbs down button. Hey Dave, I'm wondering if (for new loopers like myself...and possibly others here), you would be able to make a video showing what levels you use on the mix knobs on the VL3. For example, do you change these depending on if you're looping with elec gtr or acoustic. Do you keep levels low to record and then just bring them up later if the loop parts are not upfront enough in the mix...although that would be tough to do on the fly. Thank you.

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  4 года назад +1

      Hey Germain! Sorry I never replied to this mate! I have all of my mix knobs set to 0db. Exactly what you said of trying to change these on the fly - would be super difficult live. When I set my presets though - I aim to set them at a level that is nice and balanced for when I'm looping etc. So for a bass guitar setting - i make sure that the output level on that preset is going to be a good match to record on my loops, once I've recorded my acoustic guitar work. Hope that helps! :)
