Barry, I want to thank you sincerely for this video. I am 63 with very arthritic fingers. I continue to play the guitar because it makes the fingers work instead of rot. I’ve wanted to play with a looper for a very long time, but I’m not very good at reading instructions and applying. So, I’ve just let it go. That is until today. Your video was Heaven sent. Your teaching style is absolutely perfect as you walk the viewer straight through each step. This is how a real course should be taught. I’m looking forward to your other videos as well. Thank You so much for this incredible video aide!!
Thank you so much for your nice comment...I do think playing the guitar is good for us as we age to keep things moving and our mind sharp!....I love teaching, as it's my full time profession, and I love hearing when I have been helpful to someone's musical journey... Thank you so much for sharing your background and your goals of your music and playing... Best wishes! 🎵🎶🎸 See you next time! 🙂
I use the Boss but I couldn’t deal with the double tap to stop the loop, so I got a cheap sustain pedal for a Yamaha electric piano and it stops it with a Single tap. Great video Barry
This is a very helpful lesson for beginners-well done! I want to point out one thing that took me a while to realize. When doing your overdubs in this lesson, you are careful to time the start and stop with the start and stop of the original loop. This is not necessary. Once you have the timing of the "bed" loop correct, you can start the overdub at any time. I would agree that, typically, you would know where the start and end of your "bed" loop are, but you don't have to worry about timing the button push with them. You can comfortably click the looper into overdub mode before the start of the existing loop and begin playing as the start rolls around. Also, you do not need to worry about stopping the overdub precisely at the end.
A great presentation and approach introducing this innovative tool! As a multi-instrumentalist, I've been relying on backing tracks during performances. However, I've always been intrigued with loopers and I own one but I've just never taken the time to acquire the skill well enough to feel comfortable with it in a live situation. I do believe audiences find it to be more entertaining in watching a performer using a looper that knows what they are doing. It's live and more spontaneous and engaging. Your presentation was inspiring! Now I am determined to incorporate it into my repertoire as well! Thank You!
Thank you SO much! I'm diving back into playing again after a year of settling in after a move from Kansas to Iowa. I'm pulling out my "electro-harmonix nano looper 360." Watching you actually do this is an enormous boost in getting started. Thanks again.
Ah-ha. I like that capo moving thing because open chords can provide extra body. Fortunately for me, I have a Peavey AT-200 which allows me to capo-up and capo-down instantly without a physical capo. It also emulates bass, acoustic, 12-string and instantly tunes to any tuning. With my looper, this could get very interesting 😎👍
Favorite looper is from Nux. Has drum tracks built-in that stay synced to the loops you create, and you can route the drums to a separate amp. Can also save loops up to I think 99, so you don't have to re-create the loop every time. Great for a quick jam when you have a few minutes, or extending it out for however long you want. Love the thing.
That's cool!...I looked that up....I do have a Boss RC3 that I used to use quite a bit with the drums, and preprogram loops into it... Best wishes ✌️🎶🎸🎵
@@bcmusic71 Yeah I think the Boss was the first to do drums. It's really nice to keep proper timing without using a metronome, and the ability to break it out to a separate amp is great because the drums never sound good thru a guitar amp. Cheers!
Another great 2 chord tune to loop us Oye Como Va. It's super easy, and it's got good rhythm. Also, as a bonus riff to play over the tune, is the Groove is in the Heart riff. Works perfect over the Am7 and D7add 9.

@@bcmusic71 nice I like the non complexity of that one to be honest with you. There's other great looper pedals out there but for just beginning and something that you don't want you know the studio like or anything but just a simple one that is very easy one to use I think I'm going to pick one up
Great work Barry - many thanks. Your video has given me some ideas and inspiration as I build myself up to re-entering the world of Open Mic playing after a longish period away (cue Covid pandemic - the year the world stood still!). I saw another comment that mentioned the idea that it would be good to also provide some details and explanation about the whys and wherefores of your use of the capo in relation to the foundation key of the song. Building on that thought, I wondered if you might consider taking each of these songs and making an individual video for each one so that you can go into the details of capo and chord family and their relationship with the “base line key” of the song. I have a reasonable understanding but it’s far from complete so details based on a specific song in the way you have presented it with the use of a looper (for performance (e.g. Open Mics) use perhaps, as will be the case with me) would,I think, be a great service to your followers and potentially grow your base. I appreciate it’s not a quick thing to produce but it would be so beneficial to many such as myself I feel. Thanks for what you are doing. Keep on rockin’ and loopin’ 😎🎶
Thank you Bluesman for your thoughtful comment... Very much appreciated... You have given me inspiration to make those videos about using a capo...I do know that not everyone is clear on the uses/purposes of the capo, so I would love to help with that.... I'm so happy to hear you're getting back into being out there with your music.... I also like your terms "base line key" and "foundation key", as I think that would make sense to many who aren't as up on music theory.... Thank you for that... Best wishes getting out and showing your talent🎵🎸.... Rock on!
Any tips on how to make looping work when the chorus and bridge have different chord progressions and or rhythm to the verses. Much more difficult than if just one progression throughout
With that scenario here's what I've done in the past... Some loopers, like the Boss rc3, will let you store an mp3.... I've actually played through a whole song into the rc3, or you can record on a DAW and pull the mp3 into the looper, and store it for playback...I don't think this small Ditto in my video will store other mp3's, but a lot of them do... The Ditto X4 will let you do two loops on the fly, like a verse/chorus.... Or store.....I hope this makes sense...
The boss rc3 allows you to record two loops in adjoining locations and switch between the two locations. The active memory slot playing changes at the end of the loop.
There are some loopers that are more complex and can address this issue...I intentionally picked these songs, as they do not change... Just some simple songs to get people going that are new to looping... Best wishes 🎶🎵🎸
@@Doghowseman You can keep layering with this looper, but you can't do a different progression within the same loop....some loopers do have that option to add different sections of a song...
I know what you're getting at... Not sure how to do this without plugging in somehow to the looper...I do use an Impulse Response pedal that captured my sound of my acoustic guitar that I can use when I plug in my guitar... Sounds like the sound of the actual acoustic instead of the pickup.... Hoping to make a video soon on the Impulse Response (IR) pedal.... Best wishes..🎵
So after 30 years of not playing I want to get back into it. Was going to buy an acoustic, like a decent Yamaha, now after watching this maybe I should get an acoustic electric and get a looper pedal. 🤔
Here's my two cents... Yamaha makes great guitars and fine instruments all round.... To me it always made sense to buy an acoustic/electric because it gives me more options... Still sounds beautiful acoustically, but I can plug it in for a gig, or use pedals when I need it to.... I've owned and been happy with Yamaha, Seagull (fine guitars as well), even owned a Sire which punched well above its price... I've had this Martin now for a while, and always thought a Martin would play kinda stuffy? but I love this guitar.... Also still own a Recording King which reminds me of the Martin sound.... Lots of options.... Have fun and much success 🎵🎸
You should. Yamahas are great in lower price range. I have an Alvarez I love as well. Taylor 214ce used or Martins Streetmaster(?) series. Find one that feels good in your hand and resonates decently well so you stay light on the strumming.
Really enjoyed your video. A quick suggestion: it would be very helpful if the fretboard was always in frame and/or if you had a pdf with the chords/lead sheet. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on looping.
Yeah, I understand this video is about looping. However, instead of saying, i'm putting the capo on 3, and playing these chords. Or, i'm putting the capo on 5, and playing these chords. Why not explain why your putting the capo in that position, and what are the chords your playing?
Thank you for your suggestion!... You are correct that my intent is to mainly teach and inspire how to use a looper.... I'm just trying to find the sweet spot to keep my videos moving without rambling too much.... Trying to keep people from skipping too much because that affects the algorithm... That being said, I do plan on making a video about the reasons to use a capo, as you're not the first to mention this... Thanks again... Best wishes...🎵🎸
With all due respect, if you don’t understand the purpose and functionality of a capo, I think a video on looper pedals may be a bit too advanced. Go watch a video on capos rather than complaining that he didn’t cover that aspect in his video which plainly and specifically covers looper pedals.
@@colincannings7946 🤣 It’s APPARENT that you don’t know how to read or use commas. Go watch a video entitled “How to Use a Capo AND Looper Pedal!” and then you can join us at the adult table. Have a good evening!
Thank you!... Good question... Couple people have inquired about my capo use, so I am planning a follow up video to explain more... The foundation chords are Bm, A, E .... To play along with those, I know if I put the capo at 2nd fret, an Am chords sounds like a Bm...a G chord will sound like an A chord.... And a D chord will sound like an E chord... Because the capo is up two frets, anything I play sounds two half steps higher...Am=Bm.... Watch for my follow up video explaining this in more detail 🙂... Best wishes🎵

There's other great looper pedals out there but for just beginning and something that you don't want you know the studio like or anything but just a simple one that is very easy one to use I think I'm going to pick one up
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist I agree ...I like the simplicity!
Good of you to take the time to reply so fully 👍
@@chrisminer5884 🙂
The boss rc3 allows you to record two loops in adjoining locations and switch between the two locations. The active memory slot playing changes at the end of the loop.
What about songs with two different parts. Like verse and chorus
There are some loopers that are more complex and can address this issue...I intentionally picked these songs, as they do not change... Just some simple songs to get people going that are new to looping... Best wishes 🎶🎵🎸
@@bcmusic71 so this looper can’t do different parts?
@@Doghowseman You can keep layering with this looper, but you can't do a different progression within the same loop....some loopers do have that option to add different sections of a song...
Is there a world where this is done with a pure acoustic guitar (no pickups) and a mic? Or always electro-acoustic?
Fender mustang GT amp comes with a looper pedal and a bunch of digital pedals
You should. Yamahas are great in lower price range. I have an Alvarez I love as well. Taylor 214ce used or Martins Streetmaster(?) series.
Find one that feels good in your hand and resonates decently well so you stay light on the strumming.
I have a Martin Gpc 11 e. And LOVE IT!!!
Really enjoyed your video. A quick suggestion: it would be very helpful if the fretboard was always in frame and/or if you had a pdf with the chords/lead sheet. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on looping.
Thank you for checking it out!.... Very nice suggestion...I appreciate that! 🎵
Where can I find the chords that you’re playing here?
I try to be very transparent with showing the chords... You can probably find some charts online..
@@JimmyFitchMusic It's apparent, you don't know how to teach. Maybe, when you have a teaching Degree, you can critique my opinion.
@@colincannings7946 🤣 It’s APPARENT that you don’t know how to read or use commas. Go watch a video entitled “How to Use a Capo AND Looper Pedal!” and then you can join us at the adult table. Have a good evening!
Colin, with all due respect, I think you should start with simpler instructional videos. I think this video provides some excellent looper tips.
Why is it that you Americans love that strumming heavy, middle of the road garbage like, 'Wagon Wheel' and 'Free Falling?'
🤷✌️🎵🎶
Very nice Barry. Question, on Wicked Games, how are you deciding which chords to add to the 2nd phrasing?
Thank you!... Good question... Couple people have inquired about my capo use, so I am planning a follow up video to explain more... The foundation chords are Bm, A, E .... To play along with those, I know if I put the capo at 2nd fret, an Am chords sounds like a Bm...a G chord will sound like an A chord.... And a D chord will sound like an E chord... Because the capo is up two frets, anything I play sounds two half steps higher...Am=Bm.... Watch for my follow up video explaining this in more detail 🙂... Best wishes🎵
