  • Are We In The Golden Age of Harley Davidson? Customizing Is So Easy! After building my latest chopper I have come to realize that new bikes are for a lot of people the way to go if you are a customizer. You can do anything to them if you have the money, time, and will. Pipes, body, audio, even motor are easy to do!

Modern Harleys have what everyone griped about older Harleys not having: reliability. A lot easier to mod your bike when you can be pretty sure it will start. And you can mod your bike instead repairing it all the time. Us old guys who lived thru the bad old shovelhead days of screwing with the ignition at 2am in a bar parking lot by the light of a beer sign can attest to that.

Agreed & it’s all about what you’re in to and have the time for. Some like spending time customizing and wrenching. I like my M8 because maintenance and working on it is easier so I spend more time in the wind as a result. Everyone’s fun bank gets filled in different ways, if your fun bank is filled with customization and/or wrenching and that’s where the clouds part for you🤘

As a muscle car guy before a motorcycle guy your premise is the same as when I tackled building a ride with lots of availability vs one without. I built a 69 Pontiac Firebird which shares many parts as the Camaro and then I took on building a Plymouth Duster, So much more Stress and SO much more CASH for the duster to get completed!!! And the after Market difference between the two is Huge.

Although I rarely ride my Evo Sportster chopper, it's so great because there are so many cool and unique parts out there that will work for it. I machined the stock triple trees, the engine covers, and had the stock frame raked and stretched by Doomtown Choppers. I can't bring myself to sell it. Hope you come to the Milwaukee Harley homecoming! I never get a chance to go out of state to anything cool.

You are right about having a late model bike. The parts are much easier to get than an older bike. My 1969 shovel is hard to find the part I’m looking for sometimes and even my 2011 twin can is getting hard to find some stuff I want. That’s it, I’m getting ANOTHER BIKE. M8 😊🏍️🏍️🥃.

I agree you can bolt on stuff on newer bikes but the old bikes have more class and sound but think back in the day you could get anything you wanted and in 40 years somebody will say the same thing you are saying and personally I would rather have a bike with out all the electronics that can go bad and I would rather have dealers that can fix things like in the old days

I love my 18 Softail (other than its recently started puking oil out the teardrop, but that’s another story) but it took the aftermarket a couple years to start making stuff for the new bikes. I’m sure it was similar when the Rushmore bikes started. And I’m sure it’s similar with stereos for the 24s now.

Any old bike is a pain in the ass. The nuances to making them work are all but forgotten. You find a guy who knows, get in on a build with him. He’s probably old as dirt and unless you Kearney’s from him that knowledge is getting buried with him.

New bikes can be better if you have the funds to get all that, but there is something to be proud of if you built your bike and it looks "stock" , a custom is a custom no matter the year. Wide glides for ever or some shit like that!

Understand what you are saying. I ride an old 97 flhtc that I have customized the lat five years. Even if they list the parts fit it takes work to make fit. Not just bolt on. From Bad Dad products to S&S 124 engine , bakers 6 speed. Wheels that required spacer in both width and axle diameter. You have to love what you are doing. New bikes are so much easier with so many more options. Built bikes for many years and it has become so much easier than it used to when you had to be an engineer and machinist.

Building a custom ride these days is considered a work of art. Compared to the rides that are being produced today are eaiser to cusomize is just that, EASY. Customes are like a cusome computer build. You have all different parts and each part is something that you would not think of until the part breaks and then you are going all over to find a replacement part that will work for the custom that you built. So if you are into custom rides then be aware that you will need to make sure that you can find replacement parts when something breaks.

Big difference between liking one better and just being better. Old bikes remind us of working on bikes with my old man. They leaked and we spent more time fixing it than riding them. Definitely more reliable now. You don’t have to like the look to accept that reality. Who has time to fix them anymore unless it’s just for fun and you have the nohow and the money. New bikes are lots of money but you don’t have to do a thing to em unless you want. Won’t strand ya and you can do what you want to it with them. Keep em coming Monk.

Check TC bros. Lowbrow customs, deadbeat customs maybe even biltwell. Probably lead you to where you need to go. Although custom, learn to weld and make or cut or grind down stuff. Got a 96" in a Flyrite ridged. Been an amazing adventure just making it somewhere. Zip ties, wire duct tape etc.... flat beds... you name it. Challenge yourself !

It's the same story with everything. They quit makin parts for the older bikes to force you to buy a newer one. I'm old. When I was growin up you could take any car, truck or bike to any shop and they had or could get parts to fix anything. Now, most dealers won't even work on anything over 10 years old. Harder and harder to find a shop that can because they all know the new computers and gadgets. Nobody knows how to do it without a computer to tell them whats wrong, even if you can find the parts.

Hate to admit it, but the ol school biker life is over. But, when you think about it. Isn't that what we have wanted? We have always complained how harley hasn't changed since 1903. Well, they are changed now, everything is plug n play, nice and easy. It's a good thing. But. Watching the old choppers become a thing of the past is definitely sad.

Bro, you make so much sense that some of the people that watched this video, it still went in one ear and out the other. For God's sake people, this is 2024. Not 1980. If Harley didn't go with the flow of technology, they would be gone, over, sianora, and you couldn't even get parts for a twin cam. Open your eyes and your mind. The M8 is the holy grail of technology....rant over. 😊

My buddy and I were recently having a conversation about new cars v old cars. New cars are better than old cars in every way. The only exception is you can’t beat the sound of a V8 that has a performance cam in it with a carburetor. They sound amazing but that’s it. Just sound. There are looks but just like sound that’s subjective but the new stuff will run faster, longer and get better fuel economy. This translates over to bikes too. I love old cars and bikes. New is better. Lol just saying.

Bolt & Go ? Is that the way thing are going now? What happens when these things start to wear down and break? They are so complected now that you can't work on them on the side of the road. Hey man you got a computer with you that I can plug into and find out whats wrong with my scooter? I started out on a 1952 Pan Head. Chop, cut, grind, drill and make shit fit! When it was finished I knew every nut bolt and wire. During my 24 years of ownership, parts wore out, they got bent and broke all to hell.....No bid deal! .......I knew how to fix it and kept extra parts, wire, plugs etc. in my hand made saddle bags. Yes these new bikes run better, have more power and are a lot more comfortable to ride. But I just don't need all the expensive, fancy, complicated electrical gadgets. I can read a map just fine and Siri helps out in tough spots. Yea. color me old, set in my ways and just doing fine with my 02 Road King. the best bike I ever had!!!

Now they have added modern equipment and they run with out much issue. And people are compliant “it no longer Harley.”

Parts availability was always the good thing about owning older Harley Davidsons. But mo more. I broke down in Dumfries Virginia in 2007 with a 1990 FXRT and the dealer did not have a simple coil. Harley is screwing people into buying new motorcycles. They took their bat and glove and went home after Indian kicked their ass in flat track racing after a long and storied history in that sport. Other manufacturers are no better.

So yes modern is easier to get parts, the question is when the new becomes old, what then? When the computer is no longer supported by anyone, and host of other electronics on the NEW Bikes. I believe your reasoning is flawed. You just mentioned your FLT Shovel is a pain with just the blinkers being an issue. Wait until the twin cams and m8’s and all their components are fricking old, 45 years from now like your shovel!

New bike ARE better - who is going to argue that engineering 50 years ago is actually better than today? With all of our advancements is someone going to argue that our knowledge we've gained by building HDs for over 100 years hasn't improved ? It's an obvious statement - anyone who has rode a 2024 street glide / road glide has to acknowledge that . I mean, I do get the cool factor of a vintage machine but come on, there is no comparison in reliability, comfort, and in repair and parts availability! . But if you try to tell me that any 70s model is better than a 2024 - I will tell you to get help! 7:39
