July 22, 2019 | Collin Marshall -- As the the NPR staff gathered to watch his performance, Jacob Collier sprinted full bore down the hallway. It seems the North London 24-year-old can hardly contain his creative energy. It comes out in his wardrobe and most definitely in his music, but it's not misdirected or out of control. These are intricate and precise compositions, like a ship in a bottle made of thousands of planks of wood, yet light enough to sail in a breeze. It's on a scale you wouldn't imagine. Here's an example: This year he covered Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's "Moon River" by recording himself 5,000 times and working in 144 other vocal submissions, and then he printed and sold signed copies of his Logic Pro audio session for fans while on tour. Though this is is a regular day for Jacob, his output continues to astonish everyone around him, both in its quality and sheer quantity. This year alone, he's putting out a project called Djesse with four distinct and complete volumes. Many of the songs are being written along the way, including one crafted specifically for the Tiny Desk called "It Don't Matter."
The whole Tiny Desk Concert has a lot to unpack. Check my math, but by my count Jacob plays seven instruments, if you include his singing. And you should - Jacob's stamp has always been to use voice in his compositions like a Swiss army knife, and virtually every combination of band members harmonizes at some point in the show. It's reflective of his philosophy on music as a connecting tool, to use the instrument we all possess, which drew me to his art in the first place. And as if to make good on those beliefs and bring all of us into one moment, he invited the crowd to sing the final lyrics of the concert together. It was the end of the show, but not even close to the limit of Jacob's imaginative bounds. He obsessed over leaving us a gift: a fake ID fashioned out of a passport photo and an Oyster Card - London's public transit fare card - which now sits on the hallowed shelves of the Tiny Desk. Extra credit if you can spot it in future episodes.

I bet Jacob Collier knows what the key of H sounds like.
Most German musicians do, B is H in Germany 😜

Probably sounds like G half sharp
@Lev WHITELAW that's crazy because I'm pretty sure that's not what he was talking about because he didn't say 'what notes are in the key' he asked what the key sounds like.
Sometimes it seems like he's a thousand years old

Maro and Becca Stevens are not exactly backup singers ;)
@@andreaguitta3858 When the main singer is Jacob, they kind of are. 🤯
Deixa by Maro. Absolutely beautiful. All of the musicians in this are so skilled and bring a certain vibe to the table. I love the songs by themselves on Spotify, but this performance really shows ALL of their creativity and skills based off of Jacob’s roadmap. I’ll be back to watch this in a couple days or so
i was looking for this comment, i'm in awe of them! *0*
I wonder if Jacob is saved by Jesus Christ. If not, all his music is worthless and will be forgotten.

I wonder if Jacob was frustrated that they gave him a regular piano that couldn't be tuned to G half-sharp

Man and it looks like he is having so much fun while doing it too, like he's just loving every moment. I love when you can see people loving the art they are sharing.

Totally. Interesting mic selection too. Could drive a truck through the space in the mix. Lovely.
Jacob Collier is a genius. That first song could have been a pretty standard two-chord folk song but moved into so many surprising directions and chord harmonies. So zesty.
he never plays anything standard. such a beautiful soul
yeah he's copying early 70's prog rock and it is still great as it was back then!
@@bonitapersonawhat? Can you name a song that’s anything like what he’s doing? If anything his music is jazz influenced.

@@Ikbeneengeit Exactly what I wanted to say, precies wat ik wilde zeggen
How did you like his music? Did you see the stuff he crafted as an adolescent? Look at "don't you worry bout a thing" by him. A masterclass, he shows an incredibly broad understanding of even music (brazilian, african) he had no business knowing about at that age or even anyone should be able to master like he had at that age, playing not only each part, but each part masterfully, exquisitely. The most stunning pan-instrumentalist and gift to humanity I have ever seen in the musical world. But I really wonder how you feel about it. I was shocked to read that you only just came across him, but, understandable as that is, I just commented on that "don't you worry bout a thing" video that I can't believe it's only been seen 6 million times over the span of 10 years. I figured I must have watched it on 1000 different devices A crazy under-appreciation of his talent, if you ask me. Everyone should atleast hear and see him operate once in their life. Glad you came across him!
I feel like he has a million thoughts a minute. His eyes are always darting and he’s got basically *all* the knowledge of music in his mind.
It’s the Autism. Elon and him have identical patterns of behaviors and their outlook on the world.
There's 2 groups of music wizard on this video.

Dude it’s so joyful
Jacob: "sing along if you'd like"
crowd: "yeah!!!"
Jacob: plays impossible song
Actually He said, "If You'd like to, at the end of this next song, please sing along." Which was the easy an sing-a-longy part.
The beauty was that the chorus at the end was designed for anyone to sing and the variation speaks to the beauty that anyone can sing.... brings a tear to the eye honestly.

@@chazkendallify no shit same here
I think what makes it special is the constraint. On his own Jacob goes wild with harmony, melody, layers upon layers as tall as skyscrapers as he can't pour out his voice quickly enough.
Here there are 6 of them. Each, albeit, playing multiple parts and instruments, but still only 6. The essence of each piece has to be distilled to something performable, and performed at a tiny desk, no less. I like this kind of Jacob the best, and I think as he's matured as a musician we're seeing more and more restraint as he's practiced playing in constraint with different collaborators. I feel like it's freeing him more, and we're just getting better and better expressions of his overflowing musical fount with each passing year.
Agreed. The arrangements and performances are more felt and have more soulfulness to them.
I've called myself a 'musician' for 30 years. I now know I don't know anything. This is real artists doing their thing. Thank you. Aloha.
I'm a bit traumatized by comments like yours. Especially for children/young people; if we are not careful we'll start introducing children to Michelangelo and wonder why none of them want to be artists. I'm sure you were joking - keep making music!
I mean, for what it's worth, you are a musician still. It's just that it's Collier we're talking about. Lol.
I'm learning guitar, and someone who's leagues better than me told me I had the right to call myself a guitar player once I learned how to make the guitar do something. So I know exactly what you're talking about.
@@LEOsoulMonarch you can indeed call yourself a guitar player my guy!
@@osmark86 thanks. I appreciate this more than you know. Real talk.
The guy just went from Joni Mitchell to D'angelo to Bobby Mcferrin as if it was nothing and absolutely excelled at it.
Was looking through comments to see if anyone said anything about the strong D'Angelo vibes on the second song. Couldn't agree more with ya.
i guess there in lies my only issue with jacob...he has no readily identifiable style,. His style is pretty much i can take everyone else's style and do it well. now ofcourse developing your own style takes time but the day he does, it will be so powerful.
@@pandapaul the drum pattern has a lot to do with imo. Forsme it's still jazzier, but ya, the voicings are reminiscent,
What freaks me out is I've written out my influences and those three always make the list. And the fact that Jacob made those choices and you noticed too makes the world just feel a little bit smaller. And connected. If art is morale then I can't think of anything more quietly inspiring than when someone you love, loves the same things you do.
All true. Also Fleet Foxes (1st song particularly), Dirty Projectors (instrumentation/arrangement choices) and very strong Stevie Wonder.

Unless I missed something, at the beginning of the second song, the band starts singing a three part harmony without a starting pitch note. Any musicians out there will know how insanely talented and well rehearsed you have to be to do that. Basically means each member had to inherently know the key of the song in their head and adjust their harmony accordingly without hearing any music to base it off of. To be fair, I've heard people including my friend say he is just not really into Jacob's music. He listened to a bunch of his songs but wasn't impressed. I guess everyone has their own cup of tea, right? I can't imagine someone who only loves pop-music through and through to listen to Jacob to be fair.
This is fantastic. In my humble opinion, Jacob should play more shows in this "acoustic" format. Without live-looping and pre-recorded bits, the compositions really get a chance to breathe and the playful musicality factor is increased to 1000%.
Amen to that
He has been this past year
you have to see his live shows with the same band (except Becca Stevens) he did in the last year.. for me it was incredible.. sure there are still some smal parts with looping but still it was fuckin awesome
Totally agree.. I was waiting for the Collier Band!
I totally agree .. at the age of 60.... some things, he performs live are too loud for me
Ok ok ok ok……. I just had to mention that at the start of “Feel” the singers begin singing acapella, in tune, in the right key, having not been given the correct starting note or pitch from a piano or guitar…. PERFECTLY! Do we really understand just how close to impossible this is for 3 (4?) voices to start a song perfectly in tune without hearing any lead-in music?? Jacob talked for like 2 minutes and then they hit the first note perfectly!! Insanity. Bravo.
yeah I don't think many people are catching how impressive that is
The bass player gave them a starting pitch...listen at 5:12 with headphones on and you'll hear it
This wasn't improvised, they have rehearsed and play this song many times so they already know which key its in and what note to hit. I don't quite get what you think is impossible about 4 talented singers hitting their notes. Its very beautiful and talented for sure but its not that crazy. Also its not acapella if there's a drummer.
@@WALKING-DISTANCE The reason it's impressive is... most people (like 99% of humanity) have "relative pitch." Meaning, they can sing in-tune once they've been given a starting relative note. For a person to have no starting note and sing a note perfectly in-tune and on-pitch is very very VERY rare. Some people have perfect pitch but last I checked it was like 1 in every 600,000 people have that ability.
Jacob hummed following the bass.
One of most beautiful and technical tiny desk concert.
A Jacob and Tom Misch song would literally make me implode
That would be amazing
Don’t do this to me. Now I’m obsessing about the idea 🙆🏾♂️
An implosion is basically an imperceptible explosion
Actually Tom Misch sings a note in Jacob Collier's Moon River intro of the song xD
Was thinking that as I read this comment
He's having so much fun being a genius
Yes he is lol. Joyous
WOAH! As soon as he opened his mouth his voice was so much deeper and croon-ier than I expected. So beautiful
9:58 Rare footage of Jacob looking at sound.
"rare"
This guy literaly sees music 24/7
You can see the rainbow of music passing by
wouldn't be surprised if the man had synesthesia and could literally see sound XD
i loled
Jacob Collier's music is accessible and wonderful to listen to, but the more you know about music, the more every single part of it absolutely explodes your brain. How can anyone have so much command of the structure and texture of music, such unfathomable power to play with rhythm and harmony, seemingly completely effortlessly, and yet still manage to craft a melody so approachable and singable that he can get a whole group to sing along on their first hearing? What Jacob Collier does with music reflects the reasons I listen to Bach and Brahms: drawing you in with a beautiful and memorable melody, laid overtop a complex and spidering web of harmony, counterpoint, and structural interrelation, which deeply rewards every single repeated listening. I never imagined I would see in my lifetime a single man blessed with so much talent, but I'm glad I'm alive now to hear what he does.
Sir, I concur with your observations and could not have said it better. I haven't stopped listening to him since my first time, the songs and playing get better and juicier with repeated listening, though ever fresh and surprising. They unpack, rewire your brain, and become your favorite drug...
I think it's also us that are, in a way, blessed. We are because we can listen and appreciate what he has to do in his whole life.
Check out Marie Dahlstrom or Erykah Badu or Floetry or The Roots or Musiq Soulchild or Moon Child or...DeAngelo or Angie Stone...or Jill Scott or Robert Glasper....or The Foreign Exchange....or Layla Hathaway or...Musiq Soulchild & Take 6.....or Commissioned or BOBBY McPharen or Tank & The Bangas (Definitely) or Gretchen Parlato Lol...I cannot spell today on Bobby'slast name...my BADDDDDDDDDDDD.......but anyway I those artists you will find the root of his inspiration and musical voicings. Greattttttt Talent Carrying The Torch On.
Thank you, I couldn't agree more with all you expressed. The more one understands music, the more you can be amazed with all Jacob is creating. Well said, indeed.
So well said, Clinton. I was a teenager for the Beatles.
This is the best that Jacob has ever sounded
I think my favourite thing about Jacob Collier is that he knows how to show off while still letting his accompanying musicians shine - on Feel especially. That requires some serious skill that goes beyond natural talent.
This is probably the perfomance I’ve enjoyed most from Jacob; I much prefer him playing with a band like this than running around by himself.
i think his new stuff is meant to be played with a band and not the "single man show" that i liked aswell. But seems like Djesse vol2 is perfect for this stuff. Im also waiting to see what else can he do on the upcomming releases.
Agreed. His Snarky Puppy stuff are all so sick
Such a shame he doesn't introduce the band, really talented musicians
I agree. His new project is incredible.
@@rosieheller8989 i think thats the only thing missing here:(
I want to talk about the drummer for a moment. Especially during 'feel'.
He adds these subdivisions and stabs with the ride and hihat that fly completely under the radar. You don't hear them, you just... -feel- the change in the feel of the section of the song. That's what a great drummer should do to a song. Change it completely without it being obvious it was him. Just, such a humble and transformative approach to an otherwise loud and pride-prone instrument. (No shade, I'm a drummer, just stating as I see)
He's definitely good at 'shuffling' the notes- real fidgety. Also I LOVE drummers who can play that softly.. rare (and brilliant) trait
He’s rocking the xylo on top of it all
Now remember Jacob wrote and played the instruments of that song on his record.
There's nothing better than a subtle drummer. There's nothing worse than an unsubtle one. (Except maybe a lead guitarist with too many pedals).
alright drummer then would you please splain that wonk feel at the end?
I feel inspired and smarter listening to this. Those chords are brain activating.
I think MARO should get her own tiny desk concert !! 😍
she does now!!
Manifesting works 😌
