BMW M2 CS! Should You Buy One Instead Of A GT4?

  • Ever since the BMW M2 CS won EVO Car of the Year 2020, I've wanted to have a go in one. How could it be so much better than the already much loved M2 Competition? How could it be so good that it beat the likes of McLaren's 765LT, Ferrari's F8 Tributo and the insanely popular GR Yaris?
    Even though the weather was a bit of a disaster during my loan, I quickly realise the real question is for £75,000, would you buy one instead of a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4!
    From BMW:
    The new BMW M2 CS (fuel consumption combined: 10.4 - 10.2 l/100 km [27.2 - 27.7 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 238 - 233 g/km*; with optional M DCT: fuel consumption combined: 9.6 - 9.4 l/100 km [29.4 - 30.1 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 219 - 214 g CO2/km*) is the first exclusive and limited-run special-edition model created by BMW M GmbH for the premium compact class.
    It is positioned as a high-performance model above the BMW M2 Competition and will build on the success already achieved by the BMW M3 CS and BMW M4 CS.
    • Immensely capable basis for the BMW M2 CS Racing model, BMW M Motorsport’s new entry point to amateur racing and the new Clubsport segment (available from 2020).
    • New carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) construction for the bonnet cuts its weight by 50 per cent; eye-catching central air vent increases downforce and improves engine cooling; roof made from CFRP.
    • New front splitter, Gurney spoiler lip on the boot lid and rear diffuser in
    exposed carbon fibre.
    • Six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and 3.0-litre displacement develops 331 kW (450 hp) in the BMW M2 CS - i.e. 29 kW (40 hp) more than in the BMW M2 Competition; peak torque is 550 Nm (405 lb-ft).
    • Acceleration from 0 - 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.0 seconds (with manual gearbox: 4.2 seconds); electronically governed top speed with standard M Driver’s Package: 280 km/h (174 mph).
    • Six-speed manual gearbox fitted as standard for the first time in a BMW CS model, seven-speed M double-clutch transmission (M DCT)
    available as an option.
    • Standard specification includes Adaptive M suspension with Comfort,
    Sport and Sport+ modes, plus M Sport brakes with red-painted callipers;
    M Carbon ceramic brakes are optional; Active M Differential and
    M Dynamic Mode (can be selected as required).
    • Lightweight 19-inch Y-spoke forged wheels in a high-gloss black or
    optionally a matt gold colour shade; shod with specially adapted Michelin
    Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.
    • Dual-branch exhaust system enhances aesthetic and aural appeal,
    features two electrically controlled flaps and four stainless steel tailpipes
    bearing the M logo.
    • Lightweight, bucket-style M Sport seats from the BMW M4 CS with integral head restraints featuring BMW M stripes; seat backrests in Merino leather / Alcantara and with red contrast stitching.

    The M2 CS is the best car BMW make but it's impossible to justify an extra £25k for this over a M2 Comp. You can take the Comp to Litchfield and still have money left

    • @84Lv10
      @84Lv10 3 года назад +1

      After you pick up the Comp from Litchfield, it'll still be a regular Comp that will depreciate even more rapidly since it's been modded compared to the limited CS. So in the end, you'll have lost more money on the Comp than CS owners. A modded Comp is not a better value.

    • @alex91062
      @alex91062 3 года назад +2

      @@84Lv10 I get what you're saying but depreciation won't be that bad. 2nd hand Comp under 10k miles is ~£40k so you've avoided new car depreciation. Most mods can easily be undone unless you go and cut your exhaust or something extreme. M2 CS is over £80k. Might not depreciate at all but still tough to justify £30k price difference. If money isn't important then definitely get the CS but if it is then a Comp with £30k to play with is better value package IMO.

    • @nessuno5403
      @nessuno5403 3 года назад

      The M2 CS isn't better, it's an M Performance marketing special - same weight as Competition, same engine, same torque. If it were more different or a CSL, ok. Look at the F80 M3/M4 CS to see what a flop they were also.

      Get off your armchair and go drive one.
      I owned an M2 OG and wanted to move to something else, because it was ultimately lacking feel and control on the limit. I tested a Comp but it was more or less the same, maybe 10% better.
      But then I drove a CS. Finally a steering and chassis that is within 90% of a Type R, with the added benefits of RWD and more power. Much more communicative and capable than the other M2s. It’s much more enjoyable to drive quickly, and at the same time I’m more relaxed. Can you make an M2 Comp faster on track? Easily. Will I keep the CS forever? Probably not. But this car offers one of the best driving experiences BMW has offered in a while.

    Would never buy one compared to a GT4. But I would also never trade a 981 GT4 for the 718. The Cayman is a much more focused and engaging car to drive. The M2 steering is completely absent off feel compared to the GT4 and the breaks are much weaker. The M2 is also much heavier. The only reason to buy the M2 was 1) the M2C offered a much cheaper package and 2) you need to seat more than 2 people. The CS is utterly overpriced for what it is.

The last gen GT4 has held solid at 85-90k USD for years from its MSRP 100-115k so I can't imagine the new 718 GT4 ever dropping below that. So basically 90k for a bmw (plus whatever dealer premiums) that will likely heavily depreciate like most used M cars or a Porsche GT product that has already lost any money it would have. I wouldn’t say the most expensive pedals fanatec do are essential for a first time sim ring buyer!. What I would say is essential is buying the fanatac load cell pedal before you build up too much muscle memory for that brake pedal, then have to relearn the load cell brake if you upgrade down the road. The load cell kit attaches straight onto those then use the existing brake pedal as a clutch. That load cell brake kit is the one biggest upgrade you can make to that setup which I think is around £100 other than buying the full think it’s v3 pedals for between £300-£500 I think it is not sure!.

    I'm one of those aforementioned with an M2 Comp that's been fiddled. Has a Stage 1 bootmod3 and it is even nuttier than the CS map I had on it. The low end tq is monstrous and, like you said "rude" and "angry" - with throttle response and excitement nearing V8 levels. I've had to lower the boost by gear 40% in 1st, 30% in 2nd, 10 in 3rd, else it's just rolling burnouts. I think it's perhaps a better daily than the CS since it's a little less *on the pedestal* and can be put in parking lots without massive fear. I would get the CS if it were a 3rd car or more long term collectible.

I've spent about £8000 on my car and it has 305bhp, weighs 1.3t and is amazing, yet it's uncomfortable to drive long distances, you need to know the car to drive it and it's a never ending project. For the same money I could have gotten a 370z or something but I know I wouldn't be as happy.
    I feel like having all these options is good because you pick the car that suits you.

    Sam, the gt4rs is my dream car that needs some upgrades and a good tune to make it into my dream car and I'd never drive any other car after that, awesome content as always.

    Never liked the design on the M2.
    Or the Cayman for that matter.
    I´d rather get a Giulia QV than those.
    That looks so much cooler.
    And then a million other cars I´d rather get.
    But a nice video though.
    Exited to see what you do to the studio though.
    Keep up the good work.

    It's an epic looking thing, but I think I'd get a low mileage 2nd hand M2 Comp and mod it ever so slightly with a tune, brakes and maybe suspension upgrade. Job done and lots of change for your £75 k.

    lets push Sam's subscription base this year. By far the most interesting , genuine and insightful car RUclips channel. I am a massive petrol head, but some of the other known vloggers are becoming unbearable to watch. Their focus has switched from car video content to massaging their egos!!! keep up the great content Sam.

    I was saving for a Python Green Cayman GTS 4.0 but jumped on the M2 CS with manual transmission because it seemed like it will be more fun on public streets without the tall gearing issue that the Cayman has. With the Cayman you really want to rev out the normally aspirated engine, and then in most places you are already breaking the law at the top of 2nd gear. The Cayman certainly has a better exhaust note...it's a tough call but I'm really happy with my purchase and it doesn't seem like you can really go wrong either way.

    Without having driven either, I'd easily have a Lotus Exige 410 (out of any car in that price range):
    -No driver aids
    -A beautiful manual
    -Lovely exhaust note
    -Faster
    -Better looking

    Great vid as always! I am considering the GT 4.0, however the price difference to the GT4 is not that big. Or all things are relative but considering how much both cost the difference is not that big...
    Go for the Heuskenveld Sprint pedals instead of the Fanatec csl :)

    Good review Sam. Thought ECOTY was all over the place for 2020! Am sure an M2 Comp with coil-overs would do the trick (it should be offered with DCC in the first place for that money) . If you didn't need four seats however, I'd save £10k and have the normally aspirated Cayman GTS please!

    I’m a BMW fan, but I don’t personally think this is as ‘special’ as a GT4, maybe on a par with a GTS. Can’t see the £25k additional premium would be money well spent over an M2 Comp either. Enjoyed the video though. 👍🏻

    Great vid, love your work. Judging from the "slidy" outside shots, I guess you did not entirely turn off TC? Just MDM TC. Turning it off completely (hold down DSC button for 5 sec), you would have kept spinning the rear wheels through 2nd and 3rd for sure!

    Only worth it if you track cars often, you like the exclusivity factor (limited production, although no specific number of production units mentioned) you like the extra carbon exterior and interior bits, the seats, gold wheels, additional bumpers, etc. I’m sure you can retrofit an M2 Comp with the carbon bits, likeJoe Achellies has done, and the carbon. So personally

    You wouldn’t want to bother wasting time and money buying a Comp pack and then modifying it to be like a CS as you would still spend 10-15k and end up with a modified M2 which is going to be worth less than it was originally as people want standard cars on the used market not modified - plus the Exclusivity of the CS is what will help hold better residuals.
    I would still though get a GT4. It is just a step up in terms of quality and brand and I would think driving experience on the track.

    Sam be carefull with that wheel. It can hurt people specially novice users. Keep it low torque. I wouldn’t get a GT4 or CS just because you can have a new or almost new R8 V10 Plus at the same price. It’s next level compared this 2 lovely cars.

    Down under the M2 CS is $140k manual a Porsche Cayman GT4 is $207k manual plus on roads and options. Quite a gap in price. Would you shop one against the other here?. One journo here, managed to put a BMW 1m on its roof. Not sure if it was slippery that day. Cheers.
