- We get hung up on "is this better" or "is this hot garbage" when it comes to what products we are using on the lawn. However, when it comes to pre-emergent, your choice of pre-emergent doesn't matter! There are SO MANY options for pre-emergent, that don't worry about the name on the bottle/bag, just put something down.

It does matter because if you use the same chemicals year in and year out especially spring and fall they will no longer work in your yard. The same goes for fungicides. Your yard gets use to the chemical and it no longer works, think of it like a junky, you have to continue upping the does to get the affect they want, you can't put down way more or it will kill the turf. It's best to switch it up each year, use a different chemical, just continue to switch it up, with fungicides we often use 3 to 4 different ones to be safe. You are correct here. No doubt. That is more advanced than I wanted to get into. However, this is very sound.
Do you have a preferred pre-emergent for fescue in the transition zone?

Preemergent is everything! Unfortunately I have some Spring seeding to do this year so I will not be able to use it. So, we'll see how it all turns out.
I should've put a little seed down this spring, but I decided to play the long game and let the grass thicken up this season, then do a fall overseed.
The spectracide works as a premergent or post emergent put it down early spring and water it in later in yr spot spray and dont water in when i do post i add a little surfactant to the container

My window is opened however the wind has been blowing crazy
I’m still learning to renovate my weed infested st Aug grass and one of my issues is that it says I can’t use atrazine more then twice year. Is there any reason for that?
I'm not sure, sorry. I'm sure it has to do with how it interacts with the St.Aug.
When does the window close on applying pre emergent?
When soil temperatures reach 70 or 75 degrees. After that it's only post emergent applications.

#dadswithbeards I've used a few different ones over the years (not the last two years) and they all work.
I want to reseed, what window of use do I have when reseeding? Like don’t reseed two weeks after using a pre-emergent or reseed two weeks before using a pre-emergent, etc. Thank you😊
Don't use a traditional pre-emergent. Use Tenacity or Mesotrione. That you can apply at seeding.
Should grass be cut all the way low when applying this ?

And it's awful! Pre-emergent will help, but after it's germinated... let the warmer temps kill it.
If the area is mainly weeds should I use pre emergent? I have a short time to fix the yard before moving in July. I feel like I would need to seed afterwards because the areas that the weeds have taken over are definitely bigger than a basketball.
If you already have weeds, go with a post-emergent weed killer
Hello, great content! I'm glad I found your channel. I live in East Tennessee (Knoxville). I'm a newbie to lawncare so your videos are helpful since we share the same soil type and weather. My issue is my neighborhood, I'm the only one that does anything in my lawn so i have weeds surrounding my property. Last year I had more weeds than grass, so I watched every video on how to correct my issues. I detached, tenacity/speed zone and overseeded last spring and fall. Today, my lawn looks better but the weeds are still bad. The beginning of April I put out my pre emergent and four different types of weed killer (twice). Do you think i can still overseed this spring (May) since the weather is still cool? Can I use my Next products like Air8 now and it not affect my pre emergent barrier? Thank you
Hello fellow East TN'er! Unless your pre-emergent contained mesotrione, you won't be able to seed at the start of the season. I would spend the spring/summer focusing on pushing the good grass you have and eliminating weeds. Use the N-Ext products to enhance your soil, then in the fall aerate and overseed. Air-8 won't affect the barrier created by a pre-emergent. Manual aeration or tilling will. I hope this anser is helpful. Thank you for watching!

Hello! I bought my first home and I have weeds scattered across the lawn right now. I still have healthy grass growing around the weeds. My plan is to apply a pre emerge soon before the first frost, then another pre emerge application in the spring. Is there anything else I should do since I have weeds right now? Or will years of pre/post emerge plus fertilizer eventually kill the existing weeds?
I would apply something to kill the existing weeds, mesotrione would be good since it's both a pre and post emergent.

While it is true that anything is better than nothing when it comes even to the big 3 of the group 3 herbicides dithiopyr, pendimethalin, prodiamine there is some critical differences that will give you different results depending on what you choose and what your battle is against.
Looking at the two biggest weeds people care about POA and Crabgrass there is a difference.
According to UGA prodiamine has excellent control against POA while dithiopyr & pendimethalin only have good control while against crabgrass dithiopyr
lags slightly for example.
Need control against crowfootgrass, sandbur, pennywort, Florida betony, doveweed, cudweed or parsley piert then pendimethalin is the only option of the 3 but you will sacrifice control of lespedeza.
There can also be changes with how well they spread effecting how easy it is to apply. I would focus on this more than anything. At the end of the day I always have a terrible time spreading lesco pendimethalin becuase of the huge chunky uneven parts and it leaves a bunch of yellow dust everywhere. I have not tried other pendimethalin products but for me POA is my largest enemy and the lack of control in pendimethalin vs the other two options is not worth it. Dispite being listed as the same as dithiopyr I have always gotten better performance from dithiopyr.
Lastly, there is different restrictions on how much you can apply of the big 3 so you may need to take that into consideration as well.
For those who are just tossing down in the spring to help your yard, no it does not matter just get it down anything is better than nothing. But do not mistake this for meaning that there is no difference between products.
You are absolutely correct! 💯 There are massive differences in what each product excels at, and knowing that will give you better results. That is a video for a different day. What happens if you over apply for the year any of the big 3?

See its informative information like this that people need to know before making a video, at least my opinion is such instead of just making a video with little experience since people are so gullible these days. There's also a right time and a wrong time to throw chemicals down and the united states greatly differs because people often forget about other areas if they live somewhere southern compared to up north. The best route which most golf courses will go with if they have weed problems is putting down one application than another application of another product a month later or sometime before than depending on weather, this covers a larger spectrum and does the best job if your fighting a lot of everything. You also have other classes to choose from, believe it or not there are far more liquid choices for per emergents than granular it's definitely more expensive at tijes and people usually hate spraying but you have that choice as well. It's always best to mix it up each year so your lawn doesn't build a tolerance to any given pressure emergent it's called herbicide resistance development, basically a junkie no longer getting the fix because the tolerance has Sky rocketed. Herbicide resistance can happen just like fungicides so it's best to switch it up
Saw something about not using the same pre emergent for more than 2 seasons in a row cause soil and grass can become used to it and it will lose its effectiveness. Any truth to that? Just subscribed btw.
Appreciate the sub. Yes, this is correct but I'm not positive on the 2 season guideline. Your lawn will build up an tolerance and the chemicals won't be as effective. However, this is especially true with fungicides.
