The Lawn Care Nut so if I’m doing a prodiamine and dithiopyr application would I still put down the speedzone? And if so how long after second application of produamine and dirhiopyr would I put the soeedzone down? Thanks for the help
The Lawn Care Nut thank you for all of your videos they are fantastic sir. I live in Houston Texas and as you probably are aware our weather has been crazy as usual however I used milorganite in my front and back yard about two weeks ago and have started to see brief results do you think I got ahead of myself I just want to learn the begin and end times as far as fertilization for my yard and should I do this every 4 weeks and how much should I water usually I water three to four times a week any help would be greatly appreciated my name is Jason
Thanks! I’m from the northeast and I’m having issues with moss taking over my lawn. How should I do my early spring start up? Can I go straight to pre emergent and fert or should I try and get the moss up first ? Thank you
I just started attempting to grow a lawn and wow!! I had no idea what goes into having a nice thick, green lawn. I have been watching alot of lawn care channels here on RUclips and you sir have the best. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
The clips from the church and Al’s house in Indiana takes me back to when I found his channel and started this obsession. Fond memories! Whenever I start nitpicking my lawn, I have to remember how happy that guy 4 years ago would have been with it. 👌
Eh Ess ....when I found the videos with Allen in that Church lawn, Milorganite was $9 a bag, jumped to $13 and today I saw Milorganite for $19 a bag at HD, new formulation and less lbs. My Lawn looks amazing but I have to make adjustments, I can’t justify that kind of price especially when taking care of 1/2 acre of lawn.
If literally a single company in my area was as passionate about taking care of my lawn as you are they’d be rich and I’d be watching. I should be thankful that they aren’t, because now I’m doing it and having a blast.
In Colorado with Killer sun, Spring one week, 10 degrees the next , 50 degree daily swings very common, native “soil” is hardpan clay, takes forever to build it up, ......but then, ....and still, ....the mountains are beeeyutifull
"a couple of two, tree nAHtches lower..." love how the Chicago accent just flows in and out like its nothing. Great video, yet again. Can't wait to get into the lawn and thrower down!
I LOVE the Lawn Care Nut? I have learned so much and am much more involved in the care of our lawn now! My husband will ask me questions now! You just have to follow the recipe!!
thank you for posting videos to help alot of people. im from southern oregon and winter for us is either really good or really nothing but either or its freezing. Iv worked on golf courses in the area for about 5 years and going, I know there a little different from a normal front yard. I am just trying to get the best ways and tips to make my yard look the best it can. Iv watched you for about a year now and have learned alot and thank you for your time
Thanks for your tips. These are helping me keep our turf athletic fields in shape in Michigan's Upper Peninsula....super short growing season, but awesome results using your tips!
Awesome awesome content! Must have stopped the video 20 times to scratch notes about my seasonal lawn care plan! Live in the South Bend area so I really appreciate the Crown Point example data.
Winter Saves our butts in MN. Last year I started getting crabgrass late in the summer because we removed Trees in our yard mid-summer, the shade for 30 years has thinned the grass so when sun hit it, of course, we got every empty grass spot full of crabgrass. Best part..... Winter came, killed all the crabgrass, then gave me a heads up on how to prepare for this year.
Here in Redmond WA, the moss that yelled at me last week is evidence enough that we had a mild winter (three days of snow, temps seldom below freezing, and never long). So, I've already thrown down Moss Out. And I really have to get my first cut in soon!
I appreciate this information a lot. I've watched a lot of your videos and have come to some of my own conclusions. First and foremost, have a season (or 2) plan to get everything to my happy point. Second: Don't rush it, but don't wait either. And finally, enjoy the experience. It's gone from a chore to enjoyable as I've done more and more. We're nearly to the happy point with our lawn now. A few bare spots and leveling to do until I'm happy. But man, it's nice getting compliments.
Always love the vids. Here's an idea: Break up this massive video into a playlist, use YT search data via trends to determine which questions people are asking around each topic.
I've heard you should not plant new grass seed and fertilize at the same time. Which should I do first? How long should I wait in between? When should I spread lime? I have 6,300 sq ft in Boston. Soil temp is 57 now. I ordered your 24-0-6 Flagship Bio-Nite fertilizer and it arrived. 1,000 sq ft will be new lawn planting for the first time. The rest has patchy grass (some sections less than 30% grass). I bought the property three years ago and did no treatment other than mow and water. I've dethatched twice and it looks much better. That helped take up dead grass and excess moss. There were too many mulched up leaves and other debris left over from the Fall. Any advise is appreciated. I love you videos!
I put my seed down October 26 kgb. It took a few weeks and a couple frost and started growing. Buried in snow from end of December melting now and it kept growing under snow
Awesome channel! I love that you haven't forgot about us working guys up North and still give good information for cool season grass even though you live in the sunshine state.
At 10:36 I Scalped and power detached the heck out of my lawn on April 7th. And actually hoped half of it would die. And then reseeded with various elite varieties of kbg and a little rye.
I live in Noblesville, IN and our 55 degree mark is pretty close to the same as Crown Point, tax time. In 2021, a weird year, we already reached 55 soil temps by the third week of March. Caught me off-guard and the air temps are going to stay well above 60 for most of this week before going down to the 50s. I skipped pre-emergent last year and paid the price with a real problem with crabgrass. Very concerned about this year, have not gotten the prodiamine down yet. Thanks to my program last year, my yard stayed green until mid-February and then greened up early March as the snow was melting away. It's beautiful. My neighbors yards are still pretty brown but that has its benefits and drawbacks. Had no choice except to mow this weekend (twice and down to 2 inches), at least 3 weeks earlier than usual. Might be too late for the prodiamine first pass but its going down this week with my fingers crossed.
haha I had my video muted for a min and you look like you are a DJ throwing down beats.... about doing basic dude stuff. I bought my first house three years ago and you really educated me and allowed my soil and grass to live again, love the passion you bring to the yard.
We just built a new house. Lawn was sodded with KBG. Sod was placed right on top of the clay soil after final grading. Greened up quickly this spring. One half of the front lawn is dark green. The other half is a lighter more yellowish green. There is a definitely sharp line of demarcation where one sod stops and other begins, like they came off two different rolls of sod. Should I throw some high N fertilizer on the lighter side to make it match better? Newbie on lawn care here. Love your videos. (In KCMO) Thanks for any tips.
Ive read a lot of conflicting information about your position on the NPK choices for spring fertilization. Assuming that a decent fertilization took place in the fall, would you not want to see a relatively lower N reading and a significantly higher P reading in order to facilitate more robust root system development rather than just getting a giant shot of top growth out of the grass this early in the season? Admittedly, I've yet to finish the whole video so perhaps this is a scenario specific choice, but either way I'd love to hear anyone else's opinion on this. Excellent content and thanks again for all the work you put into these videos, very helpful. Thanks!
I scalped /power raked mine, best yard in the neighborhood now. (only starter fert so far) First time home owner, South Central South Dakota. - Also seeded, but the germination rate was disappointing
Good deal. I am a beekeeper and I stress about what I put down and when. If I can I try and time my herbicide and grub apps when it will be cooler and less bees flying. At dusk before an overnight rain is perfect.
Love your videos and buy products from you - had to mention it's too funny I grew up in FL and couldn't take the heat anymore and moved to TN, and you moved from IN to FL
Thank you Allyn, I'm in the transition zone (NC), and I started last September with rehabing my crappy yard with a blend of tall fescue and rye. I followed a lot of advice found on your channel and others. Since then, the grass has stayed dark green and pretty healthy. I maintained it with a winter fertilizer as well and you're right about our mild, almost non existent winter this year. My only complaint was not putting out enough grass seed so therefore there's some bare spots. I thought I might try overseeding with a top quality tall fescue this spring but after this video, I decided to wait till the fall for that. I've already put down a small bag of Humic DG (need a lot more), and follow your recommendations with pre emergent and then a good fert. I'll continue to enhance the soil and strengthen the fescue I have then overseed in the fall.
Northeast pa. My property is 2 acres of lawn i mow and on a hill so its tough to water. Mowing often and at 3.25in made a huge improvement over the last few years since i moved in. My problem is fert the entire property is so expensive. Never tried air8 so thanks for the tips im gonna give that a try on the rocky soil. Need to get the best bang for the buck while staying affordable
Many many years ago, the KMart gardener, on the radio, stated putting grass seed in the freezer over night would trick the seed so it thought it was coming out of winter.
Re: the dethatcher, the GW model’s major advantage is the weight (30lbs maybe), it’s much more accessible/usable for one person to transport and use vs. a rental dethatcher that weighs hundreds of lbs.
so much info brah! just bought a house with a decent size lawn to care for with nice landscaping in Mooresville NC - zone 7b, got lots to learn about my fescue lawn and am grateful for you sharing your knowledge!
This is some golden ass info! Those are some very prominent towns you named in Illinois south of a Chicago. Wealthy to damn near rich ppl in those towns. You had some A1 contracts back then. Thanks for the info fam!
suggestion for those with dogs who really mess up the yard during rainy fall and wet winter? as far as seeding in s[ring, and dealing with large sections of basically mud?
Dogs and trees, natural enemies to lawns. If your dogs tear it up that bad then perhaps one of the added expenses of owning a dog is to resod every year. Or go with synthetic turf. Grass just will not grow well on a playground. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you. 👊
North east Wyoming just got more snow... soil still 38. Waiting for sunshine to dry out and mow. Looking at the pre emergent guide to apply once soil is warm.
Very good stuff but some conflict. Early in video you mentioned aerating after pre emergent and most would aerate first. Later in video you mentioned power raking then pre emergent which i agree. Early you noted high nitrogen in spring then later mention lower nitrogen in spring.
I'm sticking with refurbishing my lawn up here in the PNW this spring with Scotts products. If I did the fall program I'll have a kazillion leaves on my lawn in a soaked boggy soil. Leaves kill the lawn and I'm not getting rid of my trees to have the perfect lawn. I've tried the fall approach and it doesn't work for my lawn. I'm hoping the Scotts system to control crabgrass and promote turf buildup pays off for the summertime since I don't have an irrigation system for my 500 sqft lawn area. Yeah, that's what it's been reduced to over the years-1200 sqft down to 500 sqft and backing the edge off from the concrete sidewalk and driveway. Crossing my fingers with spring and Scotts. I'm new to all of this "treat your lawn like a member of the family" and the learning curve is climbing. Wish me luck.
You should cover Pythium in one of your videos. Your experiences and how over watering or poor drainage can create perfect conditions for this disease that could wipe out your lawn.
Hey Allen i live in the Pacific Northwest and I have Kentucky Blue Grass it’s been a crazy weather system hear in the Northwest Rain Rain Rain🙃🙃🙃my question to you is I aerated already and power raked but I have a lot of bare spots now I just did a yard mastery soil test waiting for the results…but in the meantime I want to try to seed some Rye grass instead of Kentucky should I
What grass seed would you recommend for Columbus, OH in mostly sun and high traffic of 5 very active kids? Thank you for your videos, I am learning sooo much!!!!!!
Thank you Allyn for sharing your expertise with us newbies, 😆 I love the music you use in the background as well. I live in the coastline of NC I have a lot of crabgrass, clovers and dandelions in my centipede grass, it's starting to get warm and I wanted to know do I use the 3-1 first or fertilizer? Right now my grass is looking very straw like in a lot of areas so I want to get a jump on things this year. I'm learning so much from your videos thanks again 🌳🎋🌲
What if you have a couple of big dogs that like to dig and eat the grass roots? Are there products and application timelines that are not a danger to your dogs?
New home owner here. I was dead set on seeding this spring. I did a complete renovation last fall and seeded then. My lawn is pretty thin now. Lots of bare patches. Now after watching this video I’m torn. Should I lay down a pre emergent and try to protect all that new grass I laid down in the fall? If I do that, when can patch bare spots?
Lawn Care nut what a great video I'm going to let you know I'm from Lowell Indiana and we had a bad winter cold and a lot of snow there's still a few inches of snow on the ground my question is how do you feel about buying fertilizer from a co-op I like to buy it from The Co-op. it seems a lot cheaper and I have about 10,000 square yard . My mom and dad are down in Florida they are snowbirds so you guys enjoy the weather. I enjoy your videos keep them coming I wish you still lived up here
Question regarding aeration in the spring vs air-8? I understood you to say you don’t recommend aeration in the spring, so why would I need the air-8 in the spring as you recommend in this video?

When do I start overseeding and adding my first fertilizer in Columbia SC

What if you have a couple of big dogs that like to dig and eat the grass roots? Are there products and application timelines that are not a danger to your dogs?
Tinley Park here checking in!! Love you site and info.
Allyn could you put down a Lawn Food as your Fert for first app. as long as Nitro is high like a 24-0-4!!!! Along with Pre-emergent????
Great job, buddy. So much good info, I had to re-watch 4 times. 🤔
No more starter fertilizer for cool season grasses? Just regular fertilizer with high nitrogen content and pre-emergent?
Thanks for the great videos and all the information Hayne. Can you recommend something to kill wild onions or wild garlic? Thanks
Any recommendations as too which products to use as bio stimulants up in Canada?
