Hey Jonathan! Thanks for the question! So a couple questions (I'll try to provide an answer in my question too.) Yeah, lawn care regiments be extremely dependent on where you live. 1. What type of grass are you growing? Unless you're growing a unique turf type I'm assuming you're using a cool-season grass. In which case I (almost) always recommend strictly overfeeding in the fall. In your case early fall if not late summer. You will have a much better take and seed success in the fall and spend a lot less money watering in the late spring/early summer trying to keep that young grass alive. 2. What type of preemergent are you using? If you're up for a bit of a hassle and want to be able to apply seed AND put a preemergent down then you can use a product called Tenacity (liquid herbicide). You need to apply this the exact same time of putting down your seed (or within 1 to 2 days of seeding). It's one of the few pre emergents available on the market that allows you to kill existing weeds, prevent WEED germination AND still allow seed.
@@TheLawnReview great answer. I use Scott’s 4 products. And I put down their fall fertilizer religiously. Sometimes I miss #3…timing. 🤷🏻♂️. Last year, we had a bad drought. I gave up watering in August. My well water source has limits. By September, I started re-seeding and watering. It worked well enough but I still need more seeding to start this season. I use Jonathan Greene’s brand seed…deep rooting “mostly Sun” version.
So, honestly I think you'd be happier with this product from The Anderson's (linked below). It's a higher quality product than the Scotts in my opinion. I supplement that program with Ironite between application 1 & 2 and again between 2 & 3 for that extra green up. Not 100% necessary. Keeping your lawn fed properly in the summer will actually help it to stay green and "awake" in the summer heat (depending on how hot it gets). But my recommendation to the original question would be to wait, get your weeds under control, then overseed big time in the early fall, cut it twice. Our lawn had a lot of weeds and clover so I used a Weed and Feed. The grass portion of the lawn now looks great but with the weeds killed or thinned out I've now got essentially bare dirt. How soon can I use grass seed? It's been about 20 days since application.
Thank you for the question! Absolutely! Weeds germinate in a progression, not all at once so you might have missed the first group but you’ll catch the later groups and prevent the situation from getting worse
So, use the fall fertilizer after the pre emergent? Would it be best to dethatch and aerate before hand? Thanks for the info. The more i watch others, the more lost i get. Lol. This i can do
Andersons Barricade is safe to use around dogs. My dog has been on it for years. Just keep them off it while you’re applying but once you’ve watered it in they’ll be fine

What would you recommend for a wait time between applications of Anderson's pre-emergent and Surge, their post-emergent? I'm in the northeast, growing region 6.
However long it takes for your grass to start growing in your yard to the point where it is nice and thick. I usually wait until I am consistently mowing once/week to consider a post-emergent. Posting a video on that one very soon.
Thank you! Definitely not too late for you! The seeds germinate and spread in a progression. Putting down preemergent now will prevent the existing weeds from spreading! I’m going to post a video next Sunday walking your through what I do when I miss the preemergent window or some weeds break through
They do have some organic options. They also own the company Lawn Box and that’s 100% organic fertilizer. You’d be hard pressed to find an effective organic preemergent. I’ve been using it for a while now and it’s safe enough for me!
@@TheLawnReview I didn't see any pre emergent at the Lawn Box website. I recently used Microlife Humates Plus and Hybrid. Do I need a pre emergent if I use Microlife? Technically it is suppose to improve the soil health.
Yeah it’s a good product but won’t do much in terms of stopping weeds. You still need to put down a preemergent. Hey Keith! Thanks for the question but it depends on where you are. Where are you located? I typically don't recommend over seeding (cool season grasses) until the fall.
@@kge420 hi, just wanted to add if you’re applying your fertilizer now to wait to add any seed since the fertilizer will kill the seed. I’m in CT and about 4-6 weeks after applying my crabgrass application I overseed and it fills in nicely!! 👌🏼😊
@@kge420 Thank you for the sub!! I'd recommend you hang off on overseeding until the fall, if you can! The preemergent you apply now will prevent your seed from taking well.
Thanks for the video. I've got one question though. This spring will be the 1st time for me to use a pre emergent. Ive got a battery sprayer and I'll be using liquid. My question is, how long should I treat the lawn for? 3, 4, 5 months worth? I'm in Canada and I have Kentucky blue grass. I'm aware that I won't be able to seed any new grass while using the pre emergent. I am assuming I'll have to use enough to cover May, June, July, August, September. Would I be correct to put enough down to cover all 5 months? What should I use with it? RGS, fertilizer and possibly some PGR in the hot summer months? Thanks!
Thank you for the question! I typically do about 4 months worth of protection. I think that’s enough to get me through the heavy germination period of the weeds. Then when you seed in the early fall make sure you put down Tenacity directly on the seed. Then once you’ve cut the new grass in the fall (2 or 3 times) go ahead and put down another dose of pre-emergent for the winter weeds. (At least that’s what I do!) I don’t usually mess with growth regulation. Just a little more technical than I like to go and I don’t mind cutting once or twice a week. I’d encourage you to check out Ryan Knorr’s channel. He’s a fantastic cool season grass resource. I know his company Lawn Supply also sells GR’s that you might be interested in! Thank you for the question though.
Hi Steven! Thanks for the question, truthfully, I wouldn't put any seed down in the spring if you're using cool season grasses. If you don' t mind me asking, where are you located?
@@stevenziegler2523 Yeah you're probably using some sort of cool season grass like I am. I never seed in the spring. I always over seed in the fall. If you want to seed in the spring you'll need to wait about six weeks after putting the seed down to put down a preeemergent. Not vice versa. If I were you I'd use the spring to get my weeds under control (i.e. put down a preemergent and apply a post emergent a couple months after) and fertilize your existing healthy/desirable turf. If you're subscribed be sure to follow along because I'll be documenting the exact process I'd recommend you follow in your own lawn since we both should be using cool season grasses.
Not at all! It’ll just prevent the weeds from spreading any further. But if you’re dealing with patchy areas that you want to fill in this spring, you cannot put down a preemergent as the preemergent will prevent grass seed germination just like it will weed seed germination. How bad are the patches? Is it possible it possible for you to wait to fill them in until the fall?
Why is it that the lawn he has-as many people do in the US look like multitudes of clumps of grass bundles. The lawns don’t look smooth. They look bumpy. I don’t care how green it is, but a nice smooth lawn is what you want. Here in Canada we would scrape that lawn down to the dirt and start all over again with a proven product line from Scott’s. I don’t work or promote them in any way, but it’s the number one choice here. Try it and in a year from now your going to see a major difference in quality and perfection in you lawn. Best to try and not scoff .
Funny story. Who knew that all the cool looking grass that came up in my yard over the years had nothing to do with turfgrass, but was actually Poa annua. 🤦♂️ So I go to my local site one and I mentioned the problem and they tell me that I should put down this product called dimension. But when I buy the bag, I don't think I'm putting down enough. What? 2 lb for thousand square feet? Doesn't seem like enough. Anyway, how do you kill Poa annua?
Hahaha! Man I hear ya. Poa Annua can look at lot like grass. Have you ever used Tenacity? It’ll kill Poa Annua for sure without hurting your existing grass.
Should already be up if it’s alive. It’s a winter weed. So you should apply a pre emergent in the fall. You could put tenacity down if you have any weeds at all otherwise you’re probably fine from the preemergent you put down
@@TheLawnReview I'll throw some tenacity down just for hoops and smiles. There's some sort of a weed that's been growing in this area for years that some hurricane deposited seeds from that pops up literally when it's still cold. I've never seen anything like it. Can I still do this now ? I’m in NC
Thank you for the question! Absolutely! Weeds germinate in a progression, not all at once so you might have missed the first group but you’ll catch the later groups and prevent the situation from getting worse
@@TheLawnReview awesome! Thanks new subbie here
So, use the fall fertilizer after the pre emergent? Would it be best to dethatch and aerate before hand? Thanks for the info. The more i watch others, the more lost i get. Lol. This i can do
Hey Dustin! It really depends on where you live. Do you mean fall fertilizer in the fall or right now?

I’ve liked it so far! But what issues are you dealing with?
Ok, I'll take a look at it. They probably sponsor you though right?

If you put preemergent down before you overseed then the seed won’t grow. Where are you located so I can give you a targeted approach

pre emergent safe for dogs?
Andersons Barricade is safe to use around dogs. My dog has been on it for years. Just keep them off it while you’re applying but once you’ve watered it in they’ll be fine
Do I need to do this if I just had my sod installed last year prior to winter?
What kind of sod? How has it done so far?
@@TheLawnReview it is manderley less water lawn, The snow just start melting like a week or so ago. I live in Canada. So our spring is just starting. So the grass is still yellow
I would still put it down but wait until your soil temperature reaches about 50 degrees!
@@TheLawnReview Thanks I will look into that. Thanks for the reply and putting out this video.
Can I use it on St. Augustine ?
Yes!
What type/model spreader do you use?
Hey Terry! I use the Yard Star by The Andersons
Great info. I am in Texas in the DFW area. Is it too late to apply the andersons pre emergent?
Thank you! Definitely not too late for you! The seeds germinate and spread in a progression. Putting down preemergent now will prevent the existing weeds from spreading! I’m going to post a video next Sunday walking your through what I do when I miss the preemergent window or some weeds break through
@@TheLawnReview The Anderson is not organic correct?
Here’s a link to what I used: ruclips.net/user/redirect?event=comments&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbVB4Vng1SU5yQk9HbFlIX0ptLUFKTU1GWWZpUXxBQ3Jtc0trR3VjczZTcTQtQjBUcDQxS01wOWl0S1dDWHRDNmJWR2lQZFgxS0IzYjJkUVFJQlVsLThvTE1mNzhCRmdXZ2piWDN3REN2NURoaUFESURWdDZlRHlOX2ZQQmQ4WFRnNzJXSXAzQWRmeVh6WmI4Z0pGYw&q=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F41lL7w1&stzid=Ugz90Ul0IBZLPZ2Phuh4AaABAg
Lawn Box is really just fertilizer and some soil amendments
When to over seed ?
Hey Keith! Thanks for the question but it depends on where you are. Where are you located? I typically don't recommend over seeding (cool season grasses) until the fall.
@@TheLawnReview S.Jersey.
I also subbed. I like your approach. Not too much science !
Get to it!!!!
Thank you Madam
How long do you have to wait to put seeds down once you do pre emergent
Hi Steven! Thanks for the question, truthfully, I wouldn't put any seed down in the spring if you're using cool season grasses. If you don' t mind me asking, where are you located?
@@TheLawnReview nyc
@The Lawn Review thank you!!!!!
Of course! Best of luck this year!
Great video and advice. Is it it too late to apply to my lawn now? I’m located in VA. Also, any suggestions how I can fix patchy areas of lawn?
If I am going to dethatch my yard In April, should I put pre-emergent down or will it keep my lawn from recovering from the dethatching?
Thank you for the question! What type of grass are you working with?
Sorry I forgot to include rye grass as well.
Where are you located?
Nashville! What about you?
Talk about the subject!!!!!
Hi Beverly! Thanks for the feedback. What part in particular are you talking about? I’d love to improve in future videos
Nice one .
Glad you enjoyed, Betsy!
Thanks, Rick. Probably looks that way because it is just starting to warm up here.
Funny story. Who knew that all the cool looking grass that came up in my yard over the years had nothing to do with turfgrass, but was actually Poa annua. 🤦♂️
So I go to my local site one and I mentioned the problem and they tell me that I should put down this product called dimension.
@@TheLawnReview I have tenacity. I put down a pre-emergent earlier in the week, so when can I put down tenacity? When the poa is up?
Should already be up if it’s alive. It’s a winter weed. So you should apply a pre emergent in the fall. You could put tenacity down if you have any weeds at all otherwise you’re probably fine from the preemergent you put down
@@TheLawnReview I'll throw some tenacity down just for hoops and smiles. There's some sort of a weed that's been growing in this area for years that some hurricane deposited seeds from that pops up literally when it's still cold. I've never seen anything like it. You're right though. I have to apply the pre-emergent in the fall. I haven't been doing that
Pablo Picasso painted Monalisa? 😀
Little known fact! Haha!
Could just take the square footage of the yard and subtract the square footage of the house to get square footage of turf.
Hey Gary! I’m not sure that works for multiple level homes but if it’s a single level house I’m sure that’d be directionally accurate
