Ryan, I live in NJ and cleaned, raked and prepped my new lawn ready for its first Spring.. honestly, stayed a nice light shade of green all winter. I used all of your products and I’m convinced it’s as good as it is because of your products and your channel.
Quick tip for everyone. Get your mower out of garage after winter and make sure it starts. If it doesn't you can get it in the shop before they get backed up for weeks. Right around the time you need to be mow.
Got a landscaping business I run in the Midwest and brought everything in on March 1st. Got them back this last week. Definitely learned my lesson last year about when to bring it in.
I've been watching your videos for years and have always loved the cinematography. On top of that I have learned so much from your educational videos. For me, this has been the most enjoyable video. Maybe it is the soundtrack? Maybe it is the anticipation of the green-up of our lawns? Keep it up!
Love your videos ( also aesthetic as a DOP for profession). I just wanted to give you some information how lawn are workin in other parts of the world. I live in the south of Ireland. The deepest soil temperature I measured this winter was 9 degrees C so 48 F. The highest air temp last summer was 86F for 3days (average about 22C /71F). So we have cool season lawn that has an average growing season between 11 to 12 month per year. Or issue in the winter is the amount of rain during the winter month,as the grass growth but it is impossible to mow. So I have never seen a dormant cool season lawn in Ireland in the winter. Since 2years I have a Barenbrug RPR lawn in the front, and it’s great. This year the backyard will be renovated with the same. A lot of the chems that you can use in the US is not allowed in Europe, I still managed to get tenacity from the US. Always thankful for your tips , but have to find ways to adopt them to our climate and the laws
We could've made a similar video at my house. The hose sprayer was broken at the threads, found a pressure tip and sprayed the grass off the bottom of my mower and trimmer and sprayed the bottom with a dry antistick silicone coating. Cut the cold burn off the fescue, did some much needed edging. Awesome info man, awaiting the next awesome video from you. Thanks for everything!
You know a guy is serious when he details and waxes his mowers.... Glad to see its that time of the year Welcome to spring! Love your vids. Keep up the great work.
Bluegrass takes a long time. My test plot from fall looks really tough right now but start to push it with low doses of fertilizer and mow it like crazy and it will get going eventually.
I'm super excited for my first mow of the season tomorrow near Cincinnati, Ohio! Also, I've had the opposite for green up. An area I seeded from scratch last fall with a quality TTTF was the first to green up despite being on the east side of my house. Although that speaks more to the cultivars because I could see that same overseeded TTTF greening sooner in the rest of the mixed yard.
Did a nice clean up and light rake and good blow. Still 19 degrees expected for lows this week in New England! Temp of soil is around 39-42 degrees depending in sun. Hope it drys out some more and get to first mow and minor repairs soon. Got my new Ryan Knorr Simple Solutions box ready to go!
Haha I love how you want to wait for the soil to “set in” and dry up before you mow. I wish I could do that. Here in Seattle we are always mowing with soft saturated soil. If I waited for it to set in I wouldn’t mow until July.
Great video brother! It's finally starting to warm up here as well. Can't wait to start the season! We still have a bit of snow on the yard from though. Few more weeks to go!
Just got my mower out and changed oil and filters and greased all the bearings. Found that one tire was flat and needed to be replaced. Can’t wait to start mowing.
Coming back to your channel now that the winter is leaving the area. We followed your videos to fully redo our lawn and we got 2 mows in before the winter. Since the lawn is not established for a full year yet - when to apply Tenacity or other product for the weeds which grew in while the lawn came out? Keep up the work!
Big fan of plasti-dip! As long as you do it right, it works great. Use it on all my cars wheels. Might get into doing entire cars, we'll see. Thanks for the video's!
This is the best of both worlds... lawn care and detailing cars... I mean lawn mowers!! Jealous of your somewhat warmer temps then us up here in the Twin Cities.
I've got about 3-4 types of grass in the front that green and grow at different rates... fun. What are your suggestions for trying to get all the same grass breed? Kill it all and start over, or is there another way? Love your videos man! Thanks for sharing your passion so the rest of us can have awesome lawns!
Just cleaned all my lawnmowers up and raked and blew the grass yesterday. I’m actually very shocked how green my front yard is compared to others. I do have hairy bittercress tho popping up in the front that i never had. Bring on the videos.
Any advice on applying grub killer? I have a white grub problem and I don't want to apply too early in the season and damage the lawn. I'm in UT and temps are similar to yours now.
For that "first start" grab some starting fluid. Take off the air cleaner and spray some starting fluid in there. One or two pulls and it will be running and pull fuel through.
Still at 37-38 degrees soil temp... Sorry. I'm just in Maryland so not too far south really and we're hovering at the 54-56 degree mark. Already threw down the prodiamine, nice 1lb of nitrogen and have had a couple nice mows already. LOVE IT.
You should look up vacuum oil change. It is a time saver and a lot cleaner than tipping your lawnmower on its side. Look up Chris notap, lawnmower oil change using your shop vac.
My lawn is dark green, but spotty. First reseeding last fall with fescue, without much prep. Better than last spring. This year will get a better handle on the partial Bermuda (need to get rid of this). Also better prep before the reseed. Weed problem gone anyways.
Hi Ryan! I live in Norway and we have very cold climate in winter, but we let our grass grow alittle tall before winter time to protect the roots through the winter. I don't know if that is the proper way to do it, but I can see that you have very short grass through the winter, or does it just look like it? Thank you! Love your channel!
Can you make a video teaching about ammonium sulfate, mixing, your rate, and how not to burn the grass? Is it ok to come out of dormancy application #1 with ammonium sulfate?I think you had a pH around 6.9 or 6.8 at one point.
Funny you mentioned that newer grass may not be as green. I planted about 1200 sq. ft. of new grass last spring and that grass is significantly darker green than the entire rest of the yard. It's a typical cool season blend but I think the existing lawn is so old that the newer seeds provide that much more color than what was out there in the past.

Probably best done in the fall while the grass is still growing so it can recover before first snowfall tbh. I would skip it in the spring, personally, and I to really do it if it needs being done meaning something like a pretty thick mat of thatch going on in the grass. You do want a bit of it in there after all

Hello Ryan...I live in Western Iowa in which we received about 3 inches of snow all winter. Things are beyond dry over here! I've been debating watering the lawn even though it's so early in the season? I haven't heard anything from you about using Hydretain? Have you used it? Is it too early here in March to apply it to the lawn?
what month do you recommend to level out the lawn and plant new seed I need to add new seed to a larger section of the front lawn and fill in some spots in the back yard. I was thinking of doing it now but I don't want to chock the grass now that its not fully growing yet. We just had a freeze last week and i think that hurt the lawn a bit when it was starting to show some green. Thank you Ryan.
I was low on iron last spring when I did my soil test. So, I put some down this spring along with barricade weed control and disease ex fungicide. Waiting a little later for 100% active growth to apply tenacity.
Disease had control over my lawn last year, I did not. So I wanted to catch it early this year and prevent it before it happens. So, my plan was to alternate brands starting in the spring and continuing throughout the summer/ fall. Humidity stays high in West Virginia.
