- What are the first steps to spring lawn care?
Today I go over what I'm doing to prepare for spring lawn care in my yard and some of the things you can think about to prepare your lawn as well. Tasks like checking on soil temps to understand application timing, clearing debris off the lawn, cleaning up equipment, and oil changes are important steps to the beginning of the spring season.

So glad these videos are back!🌱 Looking forward to starting the season!
You know a guy is serious when he details and waxes his mowers....
Glad to see its that time of the year
Welcome to spring!
Love your vids. Keep up the great work.
I've been watching your videos for years and have always loved the cinematography. On top of that I have learned so much from your educational videos. For me, this has been the most enjoyable video. Maybe it is the soundtrack? Maybe it is the anticipation of the green-up of our lawns? Keep it up!
I agree, there was something very pleasant about the audio!
We could've made a similar video at my house. The hose sprayer was broken at the threads, found a pressure tip and sprayed the grass off the bottom of my mower and trimmer and sprayed the bottom with a dry antistick silicone coating. Cut the cold burn off the fescue, did some much needed edging. Awesome info man, awaiting the next awesome video from you. Thanks for everything!
Can’t wait to see that Ryan Knorr perfect lawn this season!!! 😊🤙🏾🙏🏾
yes! more lawn videos!!
Neighbors lawn across the street looks incredible! Looking forward to a great season of videos Ryan!
Love your videos ( also aesthetic as a DOP for profession). I just wanted to give you some information how lawn are workin in other parts of the world. I live in the south of Ireland. The deepest soil temperature I measured this winter was 9 degrees C so 48 F. The highest air temp last summer was 86F for 3days (average about 22C /71F). So we have cool season lawn that has an average growing season between 11 to 12 month per year. Or issue in the winter is the amount of rain during the winter month,as the grass growth but it is impossible to mow. So I have never seen a dormant cool season lawn in Ireland in the winter. Since 2years I have a Barenbrug RPR lawn in the front, and it’s great. This year the backyard will be renovated with the same. A lot of the chems that you can use in the US is not allowed in Europe, I still managed to get tenacity from the US. Always thankful for your tips , but have to find ways to adopt them to our climate and the laws
Yes yes yes…can’t wait!
Great video, Ryan, as Spring is finally here. I have so much I want to get done in my yard but just thinking about it is making my body hurt.
MAN, feels like you were just posting your farewell vid last Fall. Welcome back Ryan! Excited to see what you've got in store for us this yard season!
Doesn't feel like that for me! Haha
Winter is insanely long
I'm super excited for my first mow of the season tomorrow near Cincinnati, Ohio!
Also, I've had the opposite for green up. An area I seeded from scratch last fall with a quality TTTF was the first to green up despite being on the east side of my house. Although that speaks more to the cultivars because I could see that same overseeded TTTF greening sooner in the rest of the mixed yard.
Good morning. Are you gonna leave the lawn mixed or convert to TTTF? Just curious.
@@Mityob67 I plan on overseeding TTTF into it every fall for the next few years, ending in a predominantly tall fescue mix.
For that "first start" grab some starting fluid. Take off the air cleaner and spray some starting fluid in there. One or two pulls and it will be running and pull fuel through.
Plastidipping a new mower is genius. It will look brand new if you ever pull it back off. The red scuffs look cool, too.
That tool is a whole new neird level. Love it though. Keep it going we have learned so much. Thanks!
2022 season has begun April 1 I do my first cut good seeing you out there brother
Great video brother! It's finally starting to warm up here as well. Can't wait to start the season! We still have a bit of snow on the yard from though. Few more weeks to go!
Did a nice clean up and light rake and good blow. Still 19 degrees expected for lows this week in New England! Temp of soil is around 39-42 degrees depending in sun. Hope it drys out some more and get to first mow and minor repairs soon. Got my new Ryan Knorr Simple Solutions box ready to go!
Just cleaned all my lawnmowers up and raked and blew the grass yesterday. I’m actually very shocked how green my front yard is compared to others. I do have hairy bittercress tho popping up in the front that i never had. Bring on the videos.
Those were some beautiful stripes you had going in the back yard Ryan.
This is the best of both worlds... lawn care and detailing cars... I mean lawn mowers!! Jealous of your somewhat warmer temps then us up here in the Twin Cities.
I did all my cleanup, weed control, and overseed already. Dormant grass greened up this week! Even the poa is coming in strong 😩.
Getting excited to start this year on a new lawn!
Somebody sponsor this man a stihl 800 backpack blower! #stihlpower
Ryan awesome jams don't know who those were and thanks for the reminder about changing my oil catch you next time
The snow is finally melting. Still have 2 inches of snow but it’s finally melting. YES! Here in north central Wisconsin.
Agreed.........Nice old school reel
I love this, keep this up
Let’s go another season
LOL at the shots fired at Bermuda grass!!
I planted grass this time of year last year I think it's better to wait until it warms up but it's just about that time of year
Quick tip for everyone. Get your mower out of garage after winter and make sure it starts. If it doesn't you can get it in the shop before they get backed up for weeks. Right around the time you need to be mow.
Good advice, I did that two days ago.
Haha same just did it an hour ago my everything starts!
Or get an EGO mower
Or you can be a man and fix it yourself. 🤷♂️
Got a landscaping business I run in the Midwest and brought everything in on March 1st. Got them back this last week. Definitely learned my lesson last year about when to bring it in.
@ryan, just a minor tip: when pull starting anything, pull the handle until it catches and becomes tight and then pull. It reduces wear on rope and notches and reduces injury chances when it locks up and yanks your arm out of the socket
I bought that Makita back pack blower, I love it.
I really like mine
You must have 72 hours of time in a 24 hour day. Pumping the videos! Nice!
I don't sleep much 😂
@@ryanknorrlawncare hahahhaha! We thank you for the sleep sacrifice!
Funny you mentioned that newer grass may not be as green. I planted about 1200 sq. ft. of new grass last spring and that grass is significantly darker green than the entire rest of the yard. It's a typical cool season blend but I think the existing lawn is so old that the newer seeds provide that much more color than what was out there in the past.
Well that definitely would make sense in your case. Mine is elite vs elite so the new stuff isn't quite as mature
Any advice on applying grub killer? I have a white grub problem and I don't want to apply too early in the season and damage the lawn. I'm in UT and temps are similar to yours now.
OK...GM...MARCH 21ST 2022...LAWN IS WEEDED AND FED...NEW BURMUDA SEEDS SOWN AND RE-SEED WILL HAPPEN AFTER THE RAIN PASSES THROUGH...IM HERE...THANKS FOR THE LAWN LESSONS... YOU ARE APPRIECIATED
Can you make a video teaching about ammonium sulfate, mixing, your rate, and how not to burn the grass? Is it ok to come out of dormancy application #1 with ammonium sulfate?I think you had a pH around 6.9 or 6.8 at one point.
I'm getting happy
Should you dethatch before a first fertilizer application of the season?
Probably best done in the fall while the grass is still growing so it can recover before first snowfall tbh. I would skip it in the spring, personally, and I to really do it if it needs being done meaning something like a pretty thick mat of thatch going on in the grass. You do want a bit of it in there after all
Never thought I would watch movie quality lawn care videos 🤣
Hi Ryan! I live in Norway and we have very cold climate in winter, but we let our grass grow alittle tall before winter time to protect the roots through the winter. I don't know if that is the proper way to do it, but I can see that you have very short grass through the winter, or does it just look like it? Thank you! Love your channel!
Using cleaning fluid on mowers seem to be excessive to me. The mowers will get dirty after the first mow, like what you said in the video; but more regrettably, all the chemicals are now washed down to the soil, just for a few days good look of the mowers?
I'm cleaning on a driveway. Not going into any soil
Hey Ryan - perhaps time to think about evolving from your gas powered backpack blower to an less noise and a more quiet electric model.
I think I see a Spyderco knife in the pocket and now I'm curious. What kind of knife do you typically EDC?
I would guess the Spyderco. I've seen it a couple of times lately.
@@aronziegler1814 ya I feel like I have too. Hard to tell maybe a tenacious or a para 3 ?
I got a custom one with my logo on it from some friends a few years ago
@@ryanknorrlawncare that's awesome! Next video let us get a peak at the knife!! Was I right tho? It is a para3
@@barbarianbraunny I think it might have been shown in this video - ruclips.net/video/_DAvqwUs6n8/видео.html
Or the video "i bought another manual reel mower"
@0:57 and the Connor Cameo begins!
@1:08 the outer cylinder can stay outside. It's made stronger & can even catch snow and bring it in to melt it.
@4:05 I hope they dont ban gas blowers, everything else can be battery but the blower we need that power to blow deep
@9:15 you got a new soaker hose. Poke some holes in the rest of it. lol
I’m so confused about what’s going on with Connor?? I must have missed something
@@caronz32 They typically banter about eachother in their videos and occasionally do a calab video. Pretty cool
It’s almost that time
Should I mow before adding the weed beater in spring or does that matter?
How soon after spring would it be safe to de thatch the lawn?
Did you rotate the tires?? 😁
What kind of self propelled mower is that? What’s the benefits of it?
Hi Ryan, Just wondering I have a large yard that I am reclaiming from overgrowth over the years. I plan on regrading my whole yard 4 acres in a couple years my question is what type of cheap grass to use as a temporary grass cover. I live in southern Minnesota Thanks for all your video content
Great videos! Very informative. I live in North Texas and I’m about to kill off my lawn and plant Bermuda. What liquid pre/post emergent would you recommend post germination?
What song is that? Sounds amazing!
Can you reccomend a soil anaylsis kit, and method to rid my new jersey lawn of clover? Your videos are quite informative
@@virginia7125 thanks for the info. Will have to search tractor supply for that.
I'll have a soil test video out very soon that will help explain that. Search my channel as I have a few clover videos. Triclopyr is typically the best bet for that.
@@ryanknorrlawncare thanks ill do that
Any place to email to get Bermuda weed identification so I can find out best way to kill the 5 or so types I have coming in on what's gonna be the first growing season for my hybrid Bermuda. I laid the sod in October last year
What shoe/sneaker are you wearing and does come with composite toe?
ryanknorrlawncare.com/product/kujo/ - you can get these in steel toe boots
How do u like that Milwaukee leaf blower ?
I like it. With the higher amp batteries it does a great job
So I am in South Dakota and my lawn looks kind like yours. Tons of dead grass from last season with alot of new growth mixed in. I decided to do a 1" cut and fertilizer yesterday, hope I didn't jump the gun... will be doing RGS and AIR8 and overseed in another 2 weeks or so.
Was that bronze radio return I hear?
You got it!
@@ryanknorrlawncare I'm good friends with the guitarist. Great group
@@smjastrzebski awesome!
Great video! How do you clean your Swardman reels?
I don't really ever do anything to those other than blow them off
I thought you were a bit nuts (so am I with the lawn), but once you started to clean your lawn mower tires ... lost me. :-)
Have you ever used tire shine on your lawn mower wheels? 🤔
5th
Not first
I have a bittercress infestation already 😞...
Those are the cleanest “dirty”‘mowers I have ever seen. Mine are never that clean, even after washing them.
So did you work at a golf course?
It's strange you can have a nice lawn, a youtube channel and, not talk about jesus in every video. Thanks for providing a secular view on lawn care ;-). Even if you are down with the big J thats cool, even cooler, actually. Thanks Ryan. You and your wife are great to watch.
Thanks for watching!
Ryan i thought you moved to a new property
HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT ?!
Don't forget to wax your lawnmowers
Ryan, I live in NJ and cleaned, raked and prepped my new lawn ready for its first Spring.. honestly, stayed a nice light shade of green all winter. I used all of your products and I’m convinced it’s as good as it is because of your products and your channel.
Glad to help and thanks for the support!
Next time add a little Seafoam to the tank, top it off with gas and run it for 5 minutes before winter, and she’ll fire right up in the spring.
Happy New Lawn Care Year Ryan! 😊
Top of the morning 👍🌱
can we get some connor cameos?
Thank you for making me feel better by saying my brown grass will turn green I did a renovation with kbg and I'm worried 😟
Bluegrass takes a long time. My test plot from fall looks really tough right now but start to push it with low doses of fertilizer and mow it like crazy and it will get going eventually.
You know you're a lawn nerd when you find yourself detailing your mowers... :D
Haha I love how you want to wait for the soil to “set in” and dry up before you mow. I wish I could do that. Here in Seattle we are always mowing with soft saturated soil. If I waited for it to set in I wouldn’t mow until July.
Well when our soil is frozen more than 2 feet into the ground and thaws out, it's not a great idea to be putting a heavy machine on it :)
Boy I tell u huaat
Hello Ryan...I live in Western Iowa in which we received about 3 inches of snow all winter. Things are beyond dry over here! I've been debating watering the lawn even though it's so early in the season? I haven't heard anything from you about using Hydretain? Have you used it? Is it too early here in March to apply it to the lawn?
I wouldn't see any issue with watering if it needs it. I have my own wetting agent called SoakORR ryanknorrlawncare.com/product/soakorr/
Coming back to your channel now that the winter is leaving the area. We followed your videos to fully redo our lawn and we got 2 mows in before the winter. Since the lawn is not established for a full year yet - when to apply Tenacity or other product for the weeds which grew in while the lawn came out? Keep up the work!
As I watch this, it’s ALSO 36 degrees with a high of 56 today where I’m at. If that’s not fate idk what is 🤷♂️
So I'm watching a video of a guy washing his lawnmower. What does that say about my life?
What type of grass do you recommend for central Alabama??
I noticed last week or so the grass is greening up reminds me nice weather is coming
Subtitles in spanish plis 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I’ll take the Milwaukee mover
First Aussie 😁. Game on. 😎
What a chill way to start off the week. Good stuff as always sir! Keep on keeping on.
What kind of gas can was that?
If you ever want to remove the plastidip, gas works great spray on gas and then pressure wash the dip away
hows your miluawkee backpack sprayer? I think thats the one I will be getting this year? anyone else have one?
I didn't like it as much as my sprayers plus
My lawn is dark green, but spotty. First reseeding last fall with fescue, without much prep. Better than last spring. This year will get a better handle on the partial Bermuda (need to get rid of this). Also better prep before the reseed. Weed problem gone anyways.
Still at 37-38 degrees soil temp... Sorry. I'm just in Maryland so not too far south really and we're hovering at the 54-56 degree mark. Already threw down the prodiamine, nice 1lb of nitrogen and have had a couple nice mows already. LOVE IT.
Just got my mower out and changed oil and filters and greased all the bearings. Found that one tire was flat and needed to be replaced. Can’t wait to start mowing.
Great 2022 prepping for Spring video. Looking forward to this season's videos. Thanks for sharing 👍
