Why I'm Applying Granular Pre-Emergent...

- Will this granular pre-emergent be a good option for the test plots?
We're going to find out! Normally I would not put pre-emergent or crabgrass preventer on such a newly seeded lawn but these areas were previously farm field so there's like going to be more to deal with in terms of issues. Also, I figured it would be a good opportunity to share this testing with all of you so you know what results to expect with both granular pre-emergent vs none at all, but also with different kinds of rates.

Last year walmart cleared out their 10-10-10 for crazy cheap. I stocked up big time! Glad I did.
I love pre-emergent, it means it is spring and lawn season is among us!!
CALL ME A SINNER CALL ME A SAAAAINT!!!! … I’ve been a fan since that vid……… sad most of the ppl here have no idea how talented you are vocally .. cheers and thumbs up as usual
Looking forward to seeing more at Knorr Sod Farm 😉
Looking forward to getting it going. All the best this season Ryan.
Looking forward to the things you teach us during this Spring! As I worked in my landscape/lawn care business in Kingwood & Atascocita here in Texas…..I used pre-emergents too brother. Then after that first bald cut I went in with 13/13/13. The best care for weeds in a lawn is a thick, green & full San Augustine yard!
What is good before putting under mulch
Fun to watch you drive down the same streets I do! Love having an Iowan to watch and help me get my lawn going!
The ol' 99 👍, looking nice for this early in the year. We're still sitting around 30 degree soil temps up in Wisconsin, the lawn fever is "reel" 😉.
That wind was just whipping Ryan - gotta love the Midwest eh? Good to see you throwin down - it means us Minnesotans will be out there soon 👍
The wind is a never ending pain in the you know what
Can't wait to see the results of the plots
Your videos always have great information and tips. I have learned a lot. Thanks
Man, I can’t wait to see the Milwaukee mower in use.
Yay! Road trip to Lowes!
Similar climate to coastal CT. 1st mow should come in 1-2 weeks. Got a cold spell happening now.
Awesome plots and land, I hadn't seen them before.
Great stuff Ryan.
Thank you.
Great video!!!
Looking good brother
Your tips help my yard 🍻🍻
That’s what I am using in my yard for pre emergent. I apply at the 2 pound rate with the smaller Scott’s spreader and it does pretty good.
Funny I was just at that same lowes this past weekend and picked up a bag of the Lesco 0-0-7 and I too noticed the other bags were busted open lol. Will be anxious to see how well the stonewall product does on your plots, I had pretty good look with it last year.
Same. It was only one bag that wasn't busted. Also that bag barely made it home.
It's raining non stop in Chicago!!!
Scott’s Triple Action is my favorite pre-emergent to stop crabgrass and plantain weed. I’ll put down two applications. One the last week of March and another in early May. Some years I break it up into four half-apps two weeks apart from one another. Massachusetts.
CT here. I'll do the same. Why 2 apps? Do you have a high concentration if weeds? Thx
Love that the content is flowing again! Good to see lawn care videos populating in my feed again!! Question on timing for prodiamine (I'm doing a backpack spray split app).....
I'm here in Long Island NY and like you said, in the northeast, we had a few straight days of sunshine and 65-68 degree days last week that brought up our soil temps to 55 for about 3 days in a row. Now we are back down at 49 degrees and there are a few nights in the 30s forecasted to bring it down further. Also, Forsythia hasn't started blooming here yet which is what I hear is a good indicator as well as soil temps.....Long question short, did I just miss my window for pre-emergent or can I get out there and do it this weekend even though we hit 55-degree soil temps for about 3 days in a row. Did the weed seeds already just germ in those three days? Interested to hear your thoughts.....Thanks. As always keep up the great vids.
You didn't miss anything. You're fine yet to apply soon
also just a caveat** I did an overseed last fall so this spring a lot of the lawn is new grass in its first season. After reading some of the comments it sounds like a pre-emergent application on new grass isn't recommended....
@@802designer in most cases I don't use it that first spring. I'm testing in this video to see what kind of results I have on very young grass
This was the first year I saw the 0-0-7 0.68 Prodiamine at Lowes too - price was right at ~$25 for 50lbs here in Chicagoland.
Previously the only Lesco I could find locally was 18-0-0 0.37 and had to go to Site One. Not sure if this is a newer offering from Lesco or just Lowes picking up the product but I'm a happy lawn care man!
I did a TTTF renovation last fall. Planted on Sep 4th. I’m in the transition zone. I had some weed pressure during the germination process, but overall everything went well. Some areas seem to be struggling and thin coming out of winter. Should I do a prodiamine application or just spoon feed fertilizer and take weeds out with post emergents? Not sure.
I’m pumped to follow along with your test plots this season! I attempted a split app of that same Lesco w/ prodiamine last season and felt like coverage wasn’t great so did a full app instead. Spraying prodiamine this year 🤙🏼
The Lesco Stonewall 0.68% isn't the easiest granular to work with, but it sure is effective. I have used it the past two seasons. Watch the spreader closely. I did a 4.25 on my Scotts spreader.
I just dropped that same Lowes bag this week. I was shocked they sold it.
Really like and appreciate your videos.
I use the same spreader, but i've had to adjust the setting as it doesn't open at all untill i dial up to 2.5. Today i spread my pre-emergent/ fertilizer at 5.5 in order to comensate for the lag in the settings. coverage appeared good at this setting.
As much as I like it, these are not finely tooned machines.
I agree completely
Greetings from Council Bluffs
Any tips on how to deal with Moles , this things come and go year round , tank you for all the knowledge you share with us
I use the same pre em. I use 5 setting on the spreader.
If I wanted to use your GreenOrr in my 40 gallon sprayer tank to cover about 4 acres, how many ounces would you recommend? I will probably have to refill one time. Also, would you dethatch and aerate prior to fertilizing?
I’m in Iowa (Cedar Rapids). I have a new reno to do this spring. It’s bare dirt right now. Planned on using Tenacity before seeding to control some weeds. Is it too early to spray that right now? When would you put the seed down? Thanks so much!
Soil temps around 55-60 and trending upward. I would spray at the time of seeding.
Hey Ryan! Question about liquid vs granular. I've heard some others say that if you spray pre-emergent then it would be soaked up by the dead leaf blades vs a granular that would fall down to the soil and go directly into the ground where it's meant to be. What are your thoughts on that? I know you'll always prefer to spray.
It's supposed to be watered in after application so anything sticking to the leaves would be washed into the soil as well. Using a nozzle tip that puts out larger droplets would also help.
Hey Ryan I heard you at the beginning on the video mention about finding your Shade grass seed. What type was that I didn't see a follow up, I only ask because I too am having issues with two sections in my yard that do not see any direct sunlight do to the position of my house. Any advice??? can send a picture if it helps. Thank you sensei haha!!!!
Video coming out tomorrow on the shade testing I'm doing
Hey Ryan, i have been following you for a while now and tou have great contents and see your lawn result I wanted to reseed my kbg sodded couple of years ago. Some parts of the lawn where shaded is getting thinner and I would like to reseed but I'm not sure what would to apply? I live in Montreal Canada.
Easiest thing to do would be to try to get those trees trimmed enough to let in more filtered light. There's not a lot that would mix great with bluegrass in terms of matching that look and being shade tolerant.
@Ryan Knorr Lawn Care I really appreciate the effort to respond and the suggestion. The issue is that the shaded area is my house shading it so thats not a good idea to trim. I was thinking of mixing it with rye grass or something, and I would like to purchase from your website, but I just wanted to see if there is small bag you sell?
You haven't gone in yet but I saw 0-0-7 and I used it last year.
Hi. 1,Should I dethatch my lawn before putting down my granular pre-emergent? 2. How long should I wait to overseed when these tasks are finished?
If you're going to dethatch or aerate in the spring do it before putting down a pre-emergent. Think of pre-emergent as a barrier to crabgrass and weeds. Once it's down you don't want to disturb or open up the barrier. As for seeding read the instructions on the pre-emergent product. Most last for 3 or 4 months, some even 6. Seed will not germinate when pre-emergent is active.
I reseeded after 2 feet of snow melted and just before the next round of snow about a month ago. It’s shady with 3 trees. I also just pruned back a bunch of branches to see if I can get more light. I was thinking dormant seeding would be a good option because there are no leaves yet to block the sunlight. Let’s see what happens. I haven’t fertilized yet due to the cold weather. Probably within the next 2 weeks.
Just curious, why didn't you seed in the fall?
@@dudethebrojohnson7018 I did seed in the fall. I reseeded back in February after the snow melted and before the next snow. Trying to fill in some bare spots. Also testing to see if it works.
It’s time for a Hudson Star mower I think
55 degrees is the magic number. So if your soil goes 55+ for a day will that activate the weeds or does it need to stay at 55+ for a couple days ?
It doesn't all happen exactly at that temp. There's been many times in the past where we have a warm spell and then it comes back down. If it was already 55 and trending upward then you would want to make sure to apply as soon as you could.
Are you going to try harvesting your own seed .
Ryan is SGN(particle size number) on the bag???? Or is it just per your visual?
Some bags will specify. With this I was just going off the ripped bags I saw at the store 😂
Thanks Ryan!!!!
Ryan, I applied the Lesco 0-0-7 to my Pennsylvania tall fescue lawn on March 16. How long should I wait before applying the second application?
Soil temp around 70
@@ryanknorrlawncare thanks very much!!!
Would you not recommend putting down a pre-emergent for a 100% KBG lawn that was seeded last fall (September 10th)? I'm located in northern Indiana. The grass is only about 1/2 to an inch tall and does not look very good right now :( I really hope I did not make a mistake choosing KBG.. I'm hoping once it wakes up from the winter and once I feed it that everything will look better. It had great color during germination, but I definitely learned about that sprout and pout phase!
If i were you id skip pre-emergent this year because it will only add stress to your brand new KBG. I would put down a starter fertilizer or whatever your soil test recommends. KBG is a spreading grass and given fertilizer it will fill in and look better, by late spring / early summer well past the time to put down pre-emerergent you will have weeds and alot better looking KBG. I'd put down a post emergent like 2,4 D or maybe Tenacity a couple times to kill crabgrass that may have show up.
I don't use it on blue that young, personally
If you and Kevin don't mind me asking, what are the negatives to applying a pre-emergent to young KBG? Will it slow down the spreading? I'm trying to learn more and there are so many different opinions. My lawn definitely has a lot more thickening up to do! 🙂
@@sj7601 yes and since the roots are not fully developed it can set them back some. When I planted my monostands I didn't put any pre on and i had minimal pressure. You always have post control in your back pocket if need be but start consistent low doses of N and it should look much better by summer
I sodded with 100% KBG in CT September 15. I had about 8 weeks before it went cold. With that said and Ryan’s advice - I am not using pre emergent coming out of dormancy.
can I apply pre emergent if I'm overseeding this spring?
No. Check out my seeding vs pre emergent video from this year for further info
Hey Ryan, who is the music artist in this video? Love the channel btw

When should I apply simple lawn solutions for northern Illinois
www.ryanknorrlawncare.com/simplelawnguide/
Put the pre emergent down a couple weeks ago now. Fertilizer went down and I've mowed a couple times. I'd be itching so badly if I had to wait all the way to April to get going. Idk how Rebel does it waiting for May.
I don't know how he does it either.
I can hear the frogs in the background.
Its time.
They're really in for it this weekend. Low of 24 😬
Well hello
If I’m planning to overseed - hold off on pre-emergent, correct? North of chicago, and was waiting until early April to get seed down.
Correct
10 - 10- 10 used to be eight or nine dollars now at 16 bucks
I would anticipate it's going to go higher than that in the months to come
Will pre emergent stunt any over-seeding done at the end of last season? If so, how can you over-seed and apply pre emergent without the pre emergent stunting the over-seed?
End of season no spring to summer yes, if ur overseeding in the spring put down tenacity
Bought that. Little while ago. Thrown her down.
3rd
What are you gonna do when fertilizer sky rockets ???
you keep buying because you care about your lawn
That 10-10-10 will never work🤣
Not first for the affiliate link
We have a fertilizer shortage this year. Would you an all the other lawn care ppl please consider not wasting it on yards? If we dont use on lawns this year maybe we can eat this winter.
Yeah the farmers are going to take the lawn fertilizer off the shelves at the store that is already bagged and ready for sale.
@@ryanknorrlawncare i love the sarcasm. More it is bought the more they will bag to refill the shelves. To think it wont make a difference is foolish. Why do you think lawn watering is the first thing cut in a drought?
@@grantgood8456 what you fail to realize is fertilizing lawns also puts food on plenty of people's table and mine included in the form of making a living.
@@grantgood8456 I think that it’s fairly safe to say that most, if not all, of the lawn fertilizer to be sold in the US this year has probably already been produced. JIT deliveries will be coming from warehouses, not factories. If anyone out there knows the real answer to the question, that would be interesting.
