Your path is indeed a great source of free plants! You did a great job getting those tap roots out without breaking them. Obviously not the first time you've done it as you seem to know exactly how much pressure to apply. Lovely that you are able to give them away to plant lovers.
I have loads of lavender both English and intermedia varieties here in my eastern Colorado garden. English lavender especially is very hardy. We are a zone 5 so our low temps can be minus 10 to minus 20 Fahrenheit. My English reseeds all over and I've had some plants for 20+ years. Absolutely one of my favourites!
@@paultsworld I do a severe prune in the spring and a light, shaping prune after flowering to encourage another bloom on my angustifolia varieties. Not such a harsh prune on the intermedia in the spring.
Hi Paul, The bees must love visiting your garden. They probably think that they're dining in a Michelin star restaurant! Stay safe in these concerning times.
Wow the roots are longer than foliage. It's so nice to give away to plants lover. Looks so easy to grow but it's a little hard to me include rosemary as well. Thanks for sharing ^^
Lovely to give plants away....such special gifts. Nice sedum in the background...fall is coming. Thank heaven after months of high temps and vey high humidity in greater Philadelphia region!
I'm really looking forward to the sedum coming out - the bees and butterflies love it. How nice your temperatures are going to be really pleasant for the next few months - I do like Autumn.
Great video! You saved the lavender you are a hero! I'm from Arizona and lavender is my friend! Keeps the scorpions away! I'm going to try and grow more too! Thanks
Amazingly tough little plant. I’d love more in my garden. Looks like I’ve over watered my propagating plants. I will keep trying. Thank you for showing how tough English lavender is. 😊🌱
I never knew lavender would root itself like this! Makes me want to look around on a sidewalk in front of a well landscaped home. 😂 I’m building mine. Hello from S. Puget Sound!
It's always worth having a close look around, under plants and in cracks in a pathway - never know what little gems are growing. Puget Sound...Looks like a fascinating and interesting part of the world you live.
I like how you’ve brought a positive to the fact that block paving harbours seedlings. Unfortunately not all are welcome in my front yard. Good to see you getting hands on, it’s surprising how strong 💪 a little plant takes root 👍🏼
You're so lucky Paul to have a constant flow of replacement lavender plants because if you want to keep lavender contained eg if its bordering a pathway, you need to replace them regularly. And you dont have to be fussing with taking cuttings either!
Very well drained soil - you could even add in some sand. Lavender like alkaline soil so you could even add a little lime. I bought some lime pellets on Amazon. But they do want to be watered - particularly when they are newly planted - don't let them go too dry in their first Summer.
Looking good pal! Funny audio adds, Paul. ;) That first seedling almost had you beat though. I was picturing myself ringside and the lavender was about to be the new reining champion. :P Nice edit! Thank you!
I didn't know lavender would "self" seed. I'm growing some from seed and they are still small but at least they will have a root made for spring. We get a lot of rain so I don't have to water them. I thought lavender was a delicate plant. I would love to make a lavender edging along garden path to my front door and now I think I could afford to! Thank you Paul. Keep well v
I really like my lavender along the path - that's great you're growing from seed - those I've just taken from the path will put up a couple of flowers next Summer - yours will too Vera.
Hi Lee, in England the seedlings can sit outside no problem - if there looks as though there’s going to be a frost after rain then I’ll just put them under a cloche so they don’t get wet. It’s wet and cold they don’t like - just one of those is fine.
Its very satisfying - let me know how it works out. The other thing is it encourages us to recognise what is self seeding - obviously many are weeds but some are little gems reading to grow on.
Paul T's World this appeared last year(didn’t flower ) and it’s back again, I’m sure it’s a geranium. But wouldn’t of dreamt of just pulling it up, I’ll try 😊

Hello Paul. Lavender is my favorite scent in the garden. I tried growing in the past but there is high summer heat and humidity and it didn’t do well. Can it be grown in pots without replanting in the garden? Thank you for the informative video.
Great vid Paul , I'm planning on planting a dwarf variety next yr called Little Lady , Lavandula Augustifolia. Were the ones you planted up last yr , the same size to begin with as the ones you dug up on this video ... if they were they've grown really well . Keep up the good work and top vids 👍
Thanks Big D. Yes, the ones planted up last year were exactly the same size as the ones I pulled out of the path...same routine. I have a little production line: path seedling - small pot - then ground or big pot. I've just googled "Little lady" - looks a very nice lavender, let me know how it goes next year.
I have potted young small English Lavender the same size as yours. Will you prune them now or wait until autumn. Also my young Lavender didnt flower last year but has nice green growth is this normal
Nice green growth is a good sign. I’d wait now and let them flower - then prune them back as soon as the flowers are spent in the Summer so there’s plenty of time for new growth and flowering the following Summer.
I put gravel in most pots, it's not absolutely necessary but I like to: It keeps the moisture away from the stem, it stops the compost flushing out of the pot when I water, the sun doesn't get to the compost to dry it out and also it can look nice and give a 'finished' look to the pot. With bigger pots I use bigger gravel. Thank you Jagdish for an interesting question.
I never see someone who grows seedlings in between the bricks! that's so odd and fantastic! what an effortless sowing of seeds hahaha. Mine just won't germinate even if I put then in a good potting medium. Maybe I just throw the seeds anywhere in the brick pathway in my garden and be surprise when they germinated. 😁
This must be due to your sandy soil? I've masses of Lavenders, some still small, one old one was a cutting from those we had in 1974; they are all in pots (various reasons why). I have never found a seedling. Have you ever had Lavandula 'Blue Ice'? It's a terrific tall and sturdy plant, late flowering. I'd give you cuttings but ... !
The steps and pathway have a hardcore foundation with the blocks then laid into a layer of sand - so these seedlings are rooting into the sand - it works really well! I like the sound of your 'Blue Ice' cuttings - maybe at a later date!
Yes, all the pots stay outside. I am in zone 9a so as long as the soil is very free draining there isn’t a problem. If your Winter is harsher then make sure the soil isn’t wet AND cold - also putting the pot next to the house will keep it warmer. Lavender can survive very cold Winters.
You make it look so easy, then I guess my zone is just not suitable for this type of plants because I don't know what I'm doing wrong my lavenders always die....
Sorry to hear your lavenders aren’t doing well. The want a very free draining soil - add in sand/grit, lots of sunshine. The don’t like an acidic soil, so adding a little lime to the mix would help. They don’t want to go totally dry so watering is a must if it doesn’t rain. In Winter they can stand very cold temperatures as long as it’s not wet - cold and wet will kill them. How about trying one in a pot with these conditions? Good luck.
