I have a couple of Walmart English lavender too. I don’t know which variety of English lavender they are and didn’t know to prune in the fall. I’m in Zone 7a. Should I prune it back now as the plant is starting to show new growth or wait until it flowers
We bought a house, it had old lavender bushes, huge, totally woody base, new growth on the top, below it looks like a small tree 😂 - but the bushes are full of beautiful flowers, every year for 3 years in a row now, they are lushes, the bees love them and they look very good, just wonderful, everyone compliments them ❤. I do maintain them now, but just the top part, the woody part is like it is, there is nothing more to do, but as I said, they really look good nevertheless. We planted also 2 new bushes last year, they are still very small and we will maintain them in this way. But the old ones we will also keep, because they are in fact gorgeuos.
I've been growing my lavender in the holes of concrete blocks. I have four plants that are over 4 yrs old. I harvest the flower stems and then prune out 1/3-1/2 of the 2 yr old branches
SO, now I know how to take care of lavender! It’s my favorite plant/herb/flower and I’ve not been able to keep it alive over one spring/summer/fall! THANK YOU! I ordered Munstead from you recently and will have it ready to be planted next spring! I thought I’d kill it if I trimmed the woody parts….sigh! Another wonderful video for me to watch! Thank you Luke!❤
Thanks Luke . It’s always good to learn something. I’ve been gardening for 65 years (mostly in Mi ,now Ga)& can still learn something from you .The lavender tips were very beneficial.‼️
I bought a little lavender plant this year to go along my fence line. The plan is to set and mostly forget. I'm glad to know I'm on the right track as long as I give it a bit of attention when it needs it! I'm looking forward to smelling the flowers next year!!
Good stuff Luke! My little Lavender plant is the only thing that drove off rabbits, so I want some huge lavender for next year to protect my peas 👊🏻💥👊🏻
We never had problems growing Lavender. We put it into clay soil, no fertilizing, no watering, just a little pruning... and it looks great even after we once had -18 °C in winter.
In eastern Washington, once the plants are established, they need little to no care, but they do need supplemental water occasionally. And they will reward you with seedlings. Soooo many seedlings....
Glad I watched this. I gave up trying to grow lavender because it always died on me. I now know why. Over watered. I like the smell of lavender so after this video I'll try one more time. Ill put it in a container and keep it separate from the other plants. Ill have to teach myself how often to water. Worth a try. Thanks Luke. What about starting seeds? Do you just let the seed tray go dry before rewatering each time?
Great info. After I saw your harvest the other day, I really wanted to begin growing lavender. Your video is timely as always. Thank you Luke. Can’t wait to get started. ❌⭕️🙏🏽♥️
Luke, do you use your lavender in cooking? I do... I do a roasted duck with lavender! And a mustard-lavender crusted fish as well with lavender-honey-butter drizzle over potatoes and asparagus.
Sounds fancy and appetizing. For some reason, I had a feeling of perfume & soap in my tastebuds after reading this. I like the smell, but Lavendar is definitely an acquired taste for me!
@@okami3186 Yes, I think it goes well with Earl Grey because the bergamot offsets it. It was a special blend I first tried in a tea shop, would not have thought of it myself because of the perfume association.
I love lavender and this video showed me how to grow it properly. I have only had varying success growing it in the past. Now I know why. Thank you, Luke!
Great video as always. I love growing lavender and wondered why I never had any luck with flowers after the first yr.. now I know lol. Thank you so much!
Can you do a video dedicated solely to proper pruning of lavender? I've heard mixed opinions about where to cut, but in following the typical advice to stop at the woody growth, my plants have that dead-ish center. Thanks!
Great info, I had gotten a lavendar starter last year and was sad it didn't flower. But I trimmed it back in the fall and it's growing like crazy now. I think it just needed time. Thanks for the tips
Yeah...mine dies every year!!! I buy the plant every year and within 3 months, it's brown. Idk, I give up 😂 I can grow everything else in my 3500 sqft garden space, just never lavender, in 2 different homesteads now, neither one! Thanks for this, Luke!
Thank you for this! I have many relatives who have tried and failed lavender. I want to plant some myself, but have been too intimidated to do so. This growing guide has given me the confidence to try it.
I'm in central Texas and tend to be too generous with water, so I decided to try lavender in a 10" terra cotta pot that is about 8" deep. I used a mix of potting soil, perlite, and crushed granite grit. I do water every other day in the middle of summer since it's in a smaller terracotta pot. Seems to be doing well so far. Started in March 2023 as a small 2" pot from a nursery. The foliage smells wonderful also, so I crush a leaf from time to time to get my lavender fix until it starts putting out blooms!
My hubby bought me some lavender seeds at Walmart. I’m 0-12 on getting anything to germinate. Munstead is what we have. Got your Vera (also my grandma’s name) variety in the mail today. Gonna be starting that soon. Hopefully something sprouts.
This is a great video, lots of info i never realized. I've always had lavender in my flower beds, and i harvest it every year. I had a french hybrid (I think Provance?) a few years ago and it was really strange. It smelled sort of like lavender, but there was a distinct undeetone of blueberries. I had to make sure not to mix it in with the regular lavender i dried and saved.
Funnily enough, we had a lavender plant which grew old and had dead wood. I watered it, hoping to revive it, and was pleasantly surprised when it came back to life. Don't ask me why or how. I guess it just wanted to live.
Thank you! I have that lavender growing from seed from your shop and it’s beautiful! But I have it in containers and want to transplant it into my tea garden - yes, I’m making tea, soap, oil and honey with it this season. I’m thinking of putting it in where my onions are currently (they’re almost done).
I water my lavender too much and it is very spidery! Luke could you give an opinion on what kind of store bought soil would be good to buy or what to mix up for my plant.
Using lavendin not lavender is a good thing too. This hybrid lavendin is hardier but I can't find it anywhere. There is a place on or very near Lake michigan that has a huge garden "wheel" of lavendin. Its amazing.
In the hot southwest, where temps are close to 100° everyday and the wind blows hard, you absolutely have to water morning & night to get a new plant established.
I always struggle to understand these gardeners that don't water. They get rain 12 months out of the year. My situation is like yours. We typically go 5 months without any rain and summer heat range us 105-115 for a long extended time. I water everything twice a day.
I have clay soil. I built a raised bed. But not sure what soil to give to the lavender. Should I dig a trench to dissipate the water? Is the trench be a circle as you mentioned here? Any help deeply appreciated.
I'm in Central Texas, we have gone thru a drought the last 8-10 yrs., I have my Lavender in a pot just bc when we do get rain it's a flood! I'm guessing my fault is not fertilizing the plants, I've not received one bloom in the 4-5 yrs. I've had the plant for that long. Last Spring I did trim it back real good, and will again here soon, I have great looking leaves and stems!!! For a 14" pot, should I fertilize as you suggested but obviously less? Thank you for the great info., just need a little clarification for growing in pots.
I love your videos, and I love the Purselane seeds I bought from you. I grow lavender and have had pretty good success with my plants. I do have have a question, though - the beautiful plant in your video is in a bed with some sort of melon or squash, it looks like. Doesn’t that other planet need water? Thanks for all you do for us!
I water my lavender, but it's really happy next to my desert willow, and we're lucky to get 9 or 10 inches of precipitation a year. Lavender always fries next to my front walk, though.
I had 4 beautiful lavender plants about 3 years old all were doing fabulous and right about to bloom. We had new windows and siding put on on our house and the workers stomped all over my plants even though I had blocked them off with a temporary fence. 3 are now dead one is recovering slowly, I am sooooooo pissed!! 😫
I have my new Big Time Blue lavender in a pot so I can bring it in. My Angustifolia varieties did survive in zone 4, but we moved and now I’m in zone 3, plus I want to make it into a topiary, like my rosemary. They seem to have similar requirements, except the rosemary definitely can’t take the cold. Thank you for the tips!

Total fan of yours. Thanks for everything. Curious, are you into rock hounding as well? Maybe you know Rob of Michigan rocks! You two are my favorites.
I add gravel and course sand in the soil around and under the plant and this will prevent problems with too much rain. In Michigan we have heavy clay soil (in my part of Michigan). I dig out a big hole about a foot down and 2 feet wide. Add gravel to the bottom of the hole several inches deep. Then add a shovel full of paver sand and gravel to the soil I pulled out of the hole and mix well and replant the plant using that mixture. Water a little for a few weeks, then let it be.
Have you any tips for lavender in a Pot? Does the Pot needs to be more deep or wide? I got the problem that my lavender dies cause of to much or to less water. So the Pot has to really big i guess.
I need to cut mine back big time this fall. They were in small pots before last year when I planted them in the front yard...they are HUGE now even smothering the hostas. Does anyone know if it is easy to dig up, move and/or split lavendar?
White French lavender Edelweiss is the only Lavender that has survived our cold wet winters here in Ky. It’s growing out of a concrete block. Really surprised me. It seems to like to hot dry location in the summer time.
Can I grow lavender in fabric grow bags? I've read that unlike growing in the ground and not having to worry about moisture, in grow bags it was said I need to treat it like any other plant and water about once a week or so depending on the heat and wind. I'm now in 7B with the new map. Any particular kind of soil I should use or is potting soil just fine? I assume to add more perlite but don't know. Thanks for the great information.
I love this guide, but... After trying to keep lavender dry-ish for the last 5 years and seeing lavender after lavender die, the last two years, I have a nice lavender growing in shade w/ regular water. This is the high desert of CA. I used to grow on the other side of the mountains in the coastal plains, and yep, giant lavender bushes loved by the birds and all I did was trim it. It actually got some amount of regular water but I had them in good drainage. It took me quite a long time to recognize that the sun up here is lethal. Even my trees enjoy some shade. I have killed so many drought tolerant plants out here, I call myself a garden killer, even though my garden is actually nice and green, unlike my neighbors' weeds, rocks and sand. Once I started w/ shade, it took me a few years to realize I need to shade pretty much my entire garden if I want to see nice, mostly non-stressed plants during summer. You should see the variety of shade cloths, old t-shirts, old palm fronds, etc shading the garden. We built a few shade structures and I have a few gazebos, but I can see I will need to top the entire garden, at least in summer. I am happy to finally have a nice lavender in the mostly shady spot. It is in its 2nd year and I will be trying to grow more from seed. Now, for culinary sage, which has been constantly dying...but probably same thing for me: it just needed shade.
… I’m so glad you discussed your shade situation … I’m in Texas and the sun is brutal here as well, even on the sun loving plants … I’m thinking of putting some lavender in some bottomless pots/urns in an area that gets mostly morning sun …
@@bluemoon8268 I was amazed at how much better everything did in summer when shaded. I do use shade cloths, but I also use dead palm fronds to partly shade chard, etc. and as long as the plant gets some protection from the full summer sun, it seems to do ok. I have shaded almost everything this year, and walking the garden, it is nice to see everything surviving the 90+, 100+ summer with only a bit of stress.
I’m loving the silly little clips at the end of your videos lately 😂 I’m glad to know that I live in the perfect area for growing lavender 💜 (high desert, SE Idaho, fertile volcanic soil that stuff just loves growing in)
I live in the Philippines and I thought it's impossible to grow lavender here but I was able to grow five lavender plants from cuttings. None of them flowered and is flowering even possible in our tropical humid hot climate?
I really like your info on this channel, Migardener very helpful! I have just started growing lavender in my garden bed here in Northern California, from seed. The weather is beginning to warm up here, as spring always comes early. This is my first time growing lavender and I am inclined in learning how to make a lot of it as I am wanting to start a business with selling and using it for soaps, oils and sachets. The pruning idea I think is excellent and would make sense why it would provide a large bounty of lavender, however how exactly do you prune the lavander? I could not exactly see or understand how you did it, Migardener. If you could explain that to me, that would be really awesome! :] I think I will also consider buying some of your gardening soils and supplies as well! :]
Do you use hardware cloth or wire on the bottom of your boxes? I'm wanting to build another one just for things that can grow into fall but I don't want to spend as much. How deep does it have to be?
I just rescued a few overwatered lavendar plants from Walmart clearance, $1, and they are doing great!

Rub Lavender Oil on your legs and shoes will help keep ticks away.
I use lavender essential oil in a spray that deters cats from using my garden beds as their litter box. (Orange and lemon are the other 2).
Add cinnamon essential oil and vanilla to that and you’ll be amazed at its additional efficiency.

That ending! My son ate one in that little skit.... it was hilarious!!!😂😂😂
Hi I just found you, lavender is my favorite plant but I can’t find the one that could grow in South Florida. Any suggestions 😢thanks
Any chance of rooting some of those cuttings
Can u propagate the cutting when trimming it back?
I’m loving the silly little clips at the end of your videos lately 😂
I’m glad to know that I live in the perfect area for growing lavender 💜 (high desert, SE Idaho, fertile volcanic soil that stuff just loves growing in)
Cannot find your Trifecta fertilizer on your amazon page
Is it okay to prune them in winter or early spring?
Best advice ever
I live in San Diego, CA. How often do I need to water lavender? Thank you very much!
Do you water if it’s in a pot ?
Wonderful going to get a batch right now 😂😅
Thank you.
can we plant it in mid august?
