An hour of my time, a very small amount of swearing and a row with my (now ex-) wife for servicing the carburettor on the dining room table and now my mower's running like new. Thank you so much.
I’d just like to mention how he briefly Passes over the “make sure you add the pipe to the air filter housing” WHICH IS IS HAREST PART. F**k this dumb video
Hi thanks. I used your video to remove, clean and replace my Izzy carburettor on my dead lawnmower, now it purrs. Your voice is clear, instructions concise and video easy to follow. I have never undertaken a task like this before. Thanks very much Stewart
Just wanted to come on here to say a huge thank you for your excellent video. Your very clear instructions allowed me to strip down and clean the carburettor on my my Al-Ko mower (the engine must be *very* similar to the Honda) and restore it to working condition, when I thought all hope was lost! Your explanation and video was extremely helpful; thank you so much!
Excellent video. Don't forget, ALWAYS remove the spark plug cable before starting the maintenance! When tightening the two knife bolts, always use a torque wrench and mention the applied Nm.
Thanks for the video! Will be following your guide for servicing my own mower, I managed to tackle the oil change last year after 9 years without a service lol. Gotta love the Honda engines!
Really helpful, even though my mower is 16 years old it still runs reasonable well. I bought the first new spark plug recently and will put a new air filter in now. Having seen your carburettor service I might try that as well.
Thank you. This is quite comprehensive. I have not had the carb off yet so this section is useful. 👍 2 years since the last service so it will be interesting to see how bad the oil is.
The item behind the main jet that you call the idle jet ( emulsion tube ) gets stuck . Some use an easy out to grab it . There is a hole which is near the top of the tube . It runs side to side . This goes towards the TOP when you put the tube in . I also clean the small holes with a wire and carb cleaner .
Follow up : My GCV 160 with automatic choke had debris in the carb bowl . After cleaning the entire carb , I put the emulsion tube in the opposite direction and it would not start . I reversed the tube and it runs . However , I noticed the tube does NOT have the hole that goes through the side near the top as shown in other videos . Lesson learned - be more careful in laying out the parts . There could be different tubes on some models .
It’s hard to explain without showing you and it was stuck in there unfortunately. But the emulsion tube sits behind the main jet and should fall out. If it doesn’t you can use a screwdriver to press it out.
Thanks for this. Really clear steps. In another lawnmower video (I really know how to live 😬) I saw a comment saying they knew a guy who lost a couple of fingers when the lawnmower he was fixing jumped into life, and so now they always disconnect the spark plug just in case. Maybe not relevant on this model... but maybe?
Thank you very much, just about to pick up a second hand "rusty but working" one for £10.00 (Hey, for a tenner it's worth the gamble). If I don't follow your guidance soon, I'm sure I will in the future. A great video! 👍👍👍
No problem! I often buy old mowers for around that price. Fix them and sell them on. These engines are great but unfortunately the decks tend to rot. Thanks 😊
Followed this great video today having bought the service kit from eBay with a new blade and carb cleaner. Did the full service as described and the mower runs like new. I'm no engineer so the video was really useful. Thanks again.
An hour of my time, couldn't get the fuel line off. Stuck fast and didn't want to tear it. I wasn't gentle either though. So couldn't get any of the springs/other cables off (except the really hair thin one). Tore the gasket trying. Gave up but sprayed the carb with the cleaner and at least it runs again (as long as the choke is on).
Piston should be at tdc before draining oil, stops any oil going into exhaust plus I don’t change my oil every year but every 3 yrs. never had problem. Photograph carb linkages😊great vlog thanks
Great section on carburetor service. Blade sharpening section was poor (important to maintain cutting edge angle while grinding) but did mention that blade needs to be kept in balance. Spark plug can be cleaned and gap reset but no mention of correct gap. Air filter section very clear. Draining of warm oil was a good tip.
@@TurnersWorkshop97 Thanks, your video was very good. It is one of the better ones I had seen. I like to see as much detail as possible, so I dont stuff it up 🤣. I will make sure I record myself when taking multiple wires or screws out, so I know where to put them back. 😁
Superb concise video 👍 may have to strip my carb as it’s only running a few seconds then stopping. Not helped that the the last drop of fuel has evaporated in it over winter probably leaving residue in carb. Well done 👍
Excellent video. Really enjoying doing my first home service. Taking the carb off, I've noticed a couple of the gaskets are pretty knackered and I have a replacement pack. Just want to know, do they need to be fitted with an adhesive?
Thank you :) with general use once a year would be good practice to keep it running nicely. If the fuel is drained out the carb before storage in the winter time it will likely stay cleaner for longer. Old fuel sitting in the carb for long periods of time causes the main blockages. And any dirt getting past the tank filter.
I've changed the air filter, sparkplug and topped up the oil as it didnt look too bad. I removed bottom of carb in situ and sprayed carb cleaner up into it and cleaned out the sediment. The mower runs, but its like its revving ever so slightly rather than ticking over. Any ideas?
@@TurnersWorkshop97 Thanks, yeah i downloaded the manual in the end, was also unsure about whether or not to screw the dip stick in as the threads are about an inch so makes a massive difference, the manual said not to.
Never work on a mower with the plug cap fitted. As has been said here if you inadvertently move the blade it could, and has jumped into life and relieve you of your fingers. Nip up the spark plug?...you should have stopped after the fist tightening move as 1/8 - 14 turn is sufficient. You warned, rightly, that the jet is brass so to take care but then you stick a steel needle into it...
Thanks for the informative video, really helpful. I have a Honda HRB 535. It propels fine but when I need to turn round it does not run smooth, jerks quite bad which does not sound good. I have changed the small cogs on each wheel as they were worn. I now suspect the wheels may need replacing as the gears may be worn, not obvious though. Any ideas ? I don’t want to buy new wheels if that is not the issue as they Re £40 each from Honda. Thanks in advance. Jim

The chances are if you are buying a service kit for your mower the plug will be suitably set for that engine. Always worth double checking though if you’re after optimum performance. Thanks for the comment
Pretty sure my Honda lawnmower (which looks to be the same or similar to yours) says on it not to let it get wet ?! Is it safe to blast with a pressure washer, really ?
They probably say that as they’re worried about the rust forming within warranty period 😄 It’s perfectly safe just don’t spray in exhaust or inlet. Many lawnmowers have hose connection points for cleaning the deck anyway. You should always clean off the grass from a lawnmower deck after use as it’s what makes them rust badly. Whether that’s with a hose or a brush.
In the GB we always screw the oil dip stick into the engine to measure the exact depth of oil.just by dipping the measure in and not screwing it down you have the depth of the thread not accounted for......otherwise not a bad vid
It’s fine on the Honda Izy, it doesn’t have a sump drain plug so this is how you are to get the oil out or alternatively you could use a vac pump. No problem man! 👍🏼

The Tube Down The Centre Is Called An Emulsion Tube Not A Pilot Jet. The Pilot Jet Is The One Under The Screw On The Top Of The Carburetor. Good Video

Hunting engines are usually an indication that the engine is being starved of fuel. Could be a partially blocked carb still.
Is there no other way to drain the oil? Risk of hydrolock on the muffler side? Did you close the pistons before this?
Not for the Honda Izy, this is the recommended way from the manual. Other makes tend to have sump plugs.
