  • Iain brings us up to speed with a number of jobs currently in the workshop. In Part 1, he introduces us to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3, a real wolf in sheeps clothing. Whilst it may not shout high performance to look at, the performance is staggering for a car of it's size and age, and Iain explains the secret behind that incredible acceleration. We also catch up on progress with the yellow Lamborghini Miura S, the Black Forest barn-find, which is now fully stripped back to it's core shell.
Stay tuned for Part 2 which will follow very soon!
Thank you once again to everyone for the overwhelming reception of these videos and for all the support of likes, subscribes and wonderful comments.

You just don't get throttle response like that on a modern car, with electronic throttles and emissions controls etc. Most of them limit the speed the throttle can actually open :/

When I was little, late 60s, we lived in Munich. My father told me of him racing one of these 6.3s in his Miura, he recounted that he could not shake the 6.3 on the straights, only in the corners. But, every time the road opened up again the 6.3 would haul him in. This was on the open road, not a race track! Always wanted one of these from his stories but had to make do with a 123 300D!

Yes, they are truly beautiful cars, in so many ways
      In 2006 I was offered one (a 300 SEL 6.3)for $13,000
the seller asked me to drive it for 2 weeks before I made up my mind
needless to say, I drive it a lot during those first few weeks
however, I knew it's age, and it needed quite a lot of $ to bring it up to "as new" condition,
      so I didn't buy it.
I'm still kicking myself for thinking with my head, not my heart!

Brings back a lot of memories. My Mother had a 1972, and we lived in North Atlanta where it is pretty hilly. Fortunately 93 octane fuel at the Amoco Station was about 30 cents a gallon because I think that car got only 8 MPG. Maybe less with the air conditioner on and a heavy foot. It was a very fast car even when full of my friends and we could be bad boys!

The King of the W109 line AND a Miura in one episode, thank you RUclips for sending me this. So many Jags and Italian delights. I will be scouring this channel for Porsche and Mercedes content.
Amazing how over half a century ago Daimler Benz engineers had a rough idea that pumping gas right into an engine's combustion chamber at a higher pressure than usual produced a big V8 with exceptional power, smoothness, and drivability. The grandfather of all of today's direct injection big-power gas engines. I'm sure Bosch took a lot of what they learned from this car in designing the CIS injection system of the 70's-80's and gave us cool stuff like the W116 6.9 sedan, Porsche 930, etc.

One day in northern Tasmania I was driving along the main street of a small town and I saw the Benz 300sel 6.9 I had seen a few times before. Gleaming metallic silver with black interior. The driver was a short and thin elderly man with white almost shoulder length hair, dressed in black and wearing a floppy black beret. The tall and thin woman in the passenger seat was dressed in very elegant clothing. Ahead of me the Benz turned from a side street onto the main road and the driver then floored the car. What a sight, the car looked like liquid platinum in the bright sunshine. I had noticed the car and the extraordinary looking couple before. Back in 1970 or 71 a very wealthy relative ordered a Mercedes Benz 280sel 3.5 in a colour combination I have never seen before, in Europe or Australia, it was a rich beige exterior with cloth black and white houndstooth interior. 1990 he bought a new dark metallic blue Ferrari Testarossa.

My father was a District Manger for the Mercedes Benz distribitor here in the USA. The distribiter kept a "600 Grosser", a "300SEL 6.3 L", and a 280SEL Convertible , that was rotated around the dealers and car shows to promote sales. One time Dad came home w/ the "300SEL 6.3L" and I got a ride in it. We where stopped at a red-light when this 55' Chevy pulled up a long side. And it was obvious that it had a "worked" V-8 in it. Vroom ... Vroom, Vroom went the 55' as the driver looked over w/ a big challenging smile. The light went green ... and Dad mashed the gas pedal to the floor boards !!! That 55' did not stand a chance ... the 300SEL 6.3L was GONE!!! SMOKED the 55' ... at the next light when the 55' finally caught up, that driver looked over and his eyes asked ... "What is that!!!" Only the "6.3L" badge , the (2) twin exhaust pipes and the clattering at idle of the mechanical fuel injection, gave you any hint to what that monster was ... here in the USA it was known as the "Banker's Hot Rod". I got to ride in a "600 Grosser" and a beautiful red w/ tan top/interior 280SEL also ... cars/ rides I still remember some +50yrs later ...

I absolutely agree. The growl and thrust of a 300 6.3 was staggering.
In 1970 aged 17 on P plates, the stockbroker father of a school chum handed me the keys to his white 6 month old 6.3 saying. "Tell me what you think" ...... My eyes lit up. I headed to the carport with his 16 year old son as my passenger.
They lived in Mosman. One of Sydney's longest steepest straight uphill roads is Awaba Street, from Balmoral Beach to The Spit Road on the crest.
From a standing start at the bottom, flooring it was mind blowing. I refuse to disclose how fast we were doing before sanity prevailed and I backed off.
Awesome machine. The Tesla S class of its day. Half a century ago.
10 years down the track the rear would sink overnight from the air suspension.
My friend's dad was an impatient guy and his son would be sent out 5 minutes ahead to start and rev the car so the suspension had risen..... Much slower than any ageing Citroen hydraulic suspension, with their very modest motive power....
Loved it. I washed the car to say a mega thank you...
    A very trusting man.
    I have owned many Citroens.
Supreme high speed tourers. Never speedy accelerators except the SM and GTI Turbo....
No match for the 6.3... What would a SM be like with 6.3 instead of 3.0??
