Lamborghini Jalpa - Most powerful of the V8 Baby Bulls - Part 3 of 3 | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

- In Part 3 of the 3 Part series, it's the turn of the Jalpa P350. Developed as an updated 1980's version of the Silhouette, it was designed to sit alongside the flagship Countach which was keeping Lamborghini afloat at a particularly difficult time in their history. Fitted with a 3.5L version of the V8 engine used in the earlier Silhouette, the Jalpa was the most powerful of the "Baby Bulls" as they're affectionately known, and the last Lamborghini to use a V8 engine until the modern-day Urus.
Iain sheds some light on the development of the Jalpa from the design masters at Bertone to the upgraded engine, before taking it out for a road-test to see how the driving experience compares to the Urraco and Silhouette with the extra power and glorious soundtrack of that lovely burbling V8!

Iain's smile when he exercises his right foot tells us more about the experience than any statistics could ever explain!
Iain's smile when he exercises his right to not be treated like a child by this government
Love the oooowww! When he nails it! ! Brits are just like us Americans, put the pedal down and give her some! And let out a loud Owwww!
he looks like he is making love
The accelerator linkage connects to eight throttles and the edges of Iain’s mouth. Foot down, throttles snap open and mouth stretches into that life affirming grin! Love it.
Yup. Doubt an electric motor has ever made anyone smile like that!
The Lamborghini Silhouette and the Jalpa are my all time favorite Lamborghini's. It's absolutely impossible to find either one for sale anywhere. Driving this Jalpa looks like so much fun. Thank you.
One of each for sale at the moment in Australia. Not at all cheap; I think Iain's videos upped the price quite a lot!
I love Tyrell’s face when he waits for the engine to kick in and then starts smiling because of emotions. So human, so real. Could watch this all day long...he did make his passion his job - so happy for him. You can see this every episode
ruclips.net/video/6kBgc4_JtCk/видео.html two seconds of diabolic laugh
Absolutely top class production as ever. Iain is so knowledgeable, it really is a joy to listen to a genuine old fashioned mechanical expert.

A bit unfair.
He’s driving a client’s pride and joy so he’s not going to upset him. I’m sure his client knows it anyway.
He can’t take it too far and he can’t take it over the speed limit. North Wales police are strict and hard on people speeding however good the driver might be.
I personally like the camerawork. Not constantly dodging and cutting to other views. It’s a technical film not a movie!
@@johnsmith1474 Blasphemer!

Ian’s face tells you all you need to know about driving this beauty👌👍❤️
That smile on Iain’s face says it all. This is a chap who has probably driven more exotic cars than I can name and yet he still gets a rise out of that great Lamborghini V8.
Thanks for taking us along on the ride. 🙏
Jalpa! You pronounced it exactly as we do in Italy! And then you corrected it to the correct Spanish one. Well done, cheers!
In addition to your impeccable presentation of the vehicles, I also enjoy how much you love driving them.
Your happy face is priceless! 😁
I think we can all agree that living vicariously via Ian is not a bad thing!!!
This guy loves cars. Genuinely. What a bloke
I think Mr Tyrrell enjoyed that test drive!
I used to own a Urraco P300 back in the late eighties/early nineties and used to love the sound it made. Iain's film brings back many happy memories.
Was I glad I didn't see this one yet, what a delight, now I regret I did not take my Morgan out this afternoon, because there was no sun and I decided to do administration. This sound, the open driving, but most of all, Iain, who not only really understands it all, but can bring it so perfectly, thank you!!!
I remember taking one (blue) out from Portman (George Street). A most amazing engine is the overwhelming memory... I wanted to do a deal to trade up to a Countach after 2 years. We couldn't agree - so I moved on. Ended up with a fibreglass 308 (from DK Engineering). Also a fabulous car... (and more beautiful).
You could really hear the difference after Ian tuned the carbs. What a car! Thanks for the look at her Ian.
The Jalpa is one of my all time favourite cars. I wish I could afford one
Iain and Harry on Sunday night is the real Top Gear.
But far better than BBC s..t
As someone with a Jalpa, it's nice to hear someone make a nice video with great audio quality and actually give it the beans. They make such a glorious sound. All the videos I see are early shifted and you hardly get a taste of the car. Love them so much. I've converted mine to EFI with ITBs and the response is a massive difference.
Loved that car in white and black. Remember when Phill Collins drove one in Miami Vice 😎
There's this stretch of road on the A45 in Olton, going from Acocks Green to Solihull which passes a petrol station and goes under the railway bridge. I was doing my A-levels in 1985/1986 and worked nights there on occasion. One Saturday night - actually Sunday morning around 2-3am - two of these came haring over the hill side-by-side towards me (away from Birmingham), with one of them on the wrong side of the road including going around the traffic lights on the wrong side - feet flat to the floor - one red and one black. From my vantage of the locked petrol station shop, they were probably in my view for no more than 3 seconds but I knew instantly what they were and remember them as clearly as if I were still standing there, open-mouthed.
Two weeks later, two guys on custom sports bikes (built around Harris frames they told me - they were regular customers of the Mobil petrol station as it was back then) zoomed past going the other way, at least at 100mph, again both side-by-side and both pulling wheelies.
I saw some odd things whilst working there (including a weird fight where two parties threw crockery at each other, smashing boxes of plates all over the forecourt - a story for another time) but also some occasionally glorious things (brand new red 635CSL, Ferrari Daytona, 4x rally-prepped 6R4s all stopping together to fill-up).
As others have said the smile on Iain’s face was enough to make me think - I want one.
A smile and whoop says it all!
In 1984 while working at a 4 start restaurant in Knoxville Tn. I was outside changing the Marquis and I first saw one. The customer couldn't get it it to start and he asked me where the nearest dealer was and I thought probably Atlanta Georgia ? I told him I had a lot of Fiats and we decided to roll it off lol ( 70K exotic) and it bellowed out the most glorious sound I'll soon not forget.Without a doubt the Jalpa and Javelin were the best sounding engines I've ever heard.
Somebody had fun making this video 😁
I owned a very early model, wonderful sound even better in the flesh. Good for 150...I've been told, flat out, what a noise. The steel roof section is stored behind the driver, in and its heavy. You won't bump into another one all year at car shows, and it's a Lamborghini, sold when it was just the Countach and that, oh and the LM could be found. Glorious sound and quite practical.
I owned a P250S back in the day. 7500rpm in 5th, 240km/ hr on the Old Hume Hwy NSW Australia; it certainly didn't get any better.
I'm glad Ian did this series because prior to these I had a very poor concept about the baby lambos thanks to top gear and Doug Demuro. They basically stated these cars were slow, heavy and not very agile, something that I don't believe is accurate after seeing these videos.
I could listen to this fella all day every episode is an education, top job.
Excellent! All we need now is a Maserati V8 comparison 😊
If Lamborghini ever came out with an entry-level car again... The Jalpa, Silhouette would be wonderful
Iain you're the man, so however you pronounce it is correct! Thanks for showing the Jalpa. I'm still very intrigued by this car as there isn't much out there to see about it. You guys are top notch!
Love the sound of a V8 under hard throttle.
What an amazing sounding V8. Lamborghini engines always sound savage, angry.
Living in South Florida, USA, every Lamborghini I see is in constant boulevard mode, a smug display of the owner’s wealth, driven like an Accord, the better to be seen. Seeing you put this Jalpa to its paces on the open road is a wonderful balm to the silliness I see daily.
Amazing car, especially after Mr Tyrrells tinkering, foot to the floor and use all those bores , lovely jubley, 👍👍🏎👍.
I think you enjoyed that Mr T! Not surprised, it sounded glorious. Don't you just love thoroughbred engines....
Iain Tyrell, bringing you that cars that only a fool would buy.
Anyone else see Iain as the next 'Joker' (@ 7.07) in the Batman movies 🤣 Seriously though, who else could do this great little V8 justice - Thanks Iain 👍
Thanks, a great series…who else could have made this series? No one. These Lambos and most of the cars you feature are enigmas…when they were new there was no internet; to find out about them we were at the mercy of car magazines of the day.
I was round the corner to Amari at lunchtime today so went to see what they had in. The usual range of modern Ferraris Lambos and McLaren. The car that I would have driven home was a Daytona tucked at the back of the showroom. I do like modern exotica, current favourite is the Huracan (topically), but for driving pleasure I prefer the analogue oldies.
The man is a living God and his team are Demi Gods.
Awesome as always. Brings back memories of going down to London with my dad in the early 1990s to test drive a Jalpa at Pullicino Classics in London. My dad didn't have the balls to go ahead with the purchase but I'll never forget the hour long test drive we had with the roof off heading out of London on the A3. He turned down another one closer to home which was an ex Lambo UK or magazine featured car, Alan Hughes was selling it in Coppull, it was mint and I did my all to try to get my dad to buy it but he bought a 911 instead.
i bought my countach there. after having a 308 dino inspected, and being told it had been rolled.
The joy on your face! 😀
I first saw one of these in the film Rocky 4, in 1985 where stallone was washing it in his driveway with the numberplate " SOTHPAW" (southpaw) if you look carefully , nice touch there I thought , along with a red countach in front of it, I believe he had just taken delivery of them both and wanted them in the film for his character . What a glorious machine , so rare and you will never see a premiership footballer driving one . 👍 👍 👏 👏
Same as mate.Rocky 4!😁😁👍
I laughed out loud each time Ian's naughty boy face reacted hitting the gas, brilliant!
Yesssssssssss Only the old Lamborghinis
Great! From about 10:06 with headphone in the bath, U think someone is working loud on your House 😂 But video is complete excellent!
Remarkable how much fun that car provides while staying strictly within the speed limits...
I remember in the 80s CAR followed a postie who had saved his money and brought one of the Jalpa cars from the factory.
They did an article on going with the gentleman and whose previous car was a Triumph Herald! .
They then did a road test when they got back to the UK.
If I remember the colour was similar to the one Ian is driving but might have been gray.
You lucky B******D lol, luckily your enthusiasm comes through the video to us ! Excellent.
Fantastic Iain, Sunday’s are the best part of the week, Harry Metcalfe then you. 👍🏻🤷🏼♂️
The smile on your face near redline reminds me of me in an NSX during redline. Well done!
At 10:05, "some mild tinkering back at the workshop later", accompanied by loud hammering in the background. Hilarious.
Tyrell TV beats any television content hands down. Please keep these great videos coming Sir
Finally Part 3 is On-Air😉
The most awaited, love this series Thanks Iain👍
When i was eight, I cut a red Jalpa out of a motoring magazine and stuck it to my bedhead. Possibly the first exotic car I noticed.
I've been waiting for this episode! I've always loved the Jalpa, a very underrated car. Thanks for sharing. Definitely agree, this over a 308 if I had the choice.
Bet that Cyclist had a shock coming round the Corner Iain LOL xx
Thanks for taking us on the ride! And please don't change anything about these videos. They're so direct, and satisfying.
wonderful! Thanks Iain!
Fantastic, as always. I've liked the Jalpa from the first time I saw it back in the '80s.
The forgotten Lambo. Glad you featured this model. Saw one in the flesh once...beautiful design!
Just lovely.
Lovely little car. I like the slightly understated (by Lamborghini standards) styling and shape. I'm a fan of V8s that burble, rather than scream, too. Love the way you go from calm, reserved and factual to the big grin and "Woohoo" when you put your foot down.
Fantastic, thanks!
Thanks for that great video, again !
One word...BRILLIANT!!
Pure art!!! Amazing.
Brilliant series Ian!!! You
Brilliant yet again. Thank you Iain! ❤️
A great video again! Thanks, Iain and team!
Glad to see the J(H)alpa getting some love.
Beautiful
It’s like a automotive history hit, these are absolute gems. I’m discovering Cars I never knew even existed and the history behind them. Better still work to keep them alive on the road continues.
Amazing!! I always look forward to your videos.
Love this channel, Love the content, can't get enough, Thank you Iain!
Brilliant, thank you
Cracking wee series that
Great! Thanks.
Great series of videos Iain!
What a fun car to drive! Thank you for sharing 👍🏻
Great to see this channel moving along. A V12 sings; a V10 screams; a V8 rumbles, grumbles or shouts; and anything below goes Cheap! 😀
I remember seeing Phil Collins drive one of these in Miami Vice! What a look!
Love it!
Mesmerized as usual, thanks Iain
well pasted the 100,000 mark, which is just wonderful to see!
Iain, I thank you greatly for clearing up the misconceptions I have long had regarding V8's. Now I know why a Ferrari 308 GTS sounds so different from a Corvette!
I LOVE the Jalpas. I remember them well when in production. If I had my 'druthers, I'd buy one in need of "help", and then resto-mod it. Upgrade everything under advisement from an expert for significantly higher performance. What a great chassis, platform, to do that to.
Stunning looking car sounds fantastic aswell
Superb as usual 👍
Thanks for providing more in depth history of these marques
lovely sound!!
It’s great to see an older gent in the trade still having bags of enthusiasm for driving. He’s right about modern fuels and carbs, I work with motorcycles and carbed bikes are not fairing well, unless run on super
Thank you sir for the great video.JDS
Always enjoy your videos. More please@
Most enjoyable show...
What can I say? Love it! Thank you Iain! 👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻
Always love the Jalpa, beautiful car.
Awesome as always. I love the real enthusiasm for the cars.
I love the Fiat parts bin switchgear and the indicator/horn stalk looks like it came out of a Marina or Allegro🙂. This has always been one of the first cars I'd put into my dream garage.
Wow, never seen Iain so happy!
