I have to buy/fit the underlay myself because the carpet shop want too much money and this video confirms my confidence that I can do it myself so all the carpet fitter needs to do is fit the grippers and lay the carpet. Saved me half the cost of the underlay from carpet right. Thanks
Perfect video. I followed it to the letter and had no problems. The new gripper also has arrows printed on it pointing to the wall. I used a junior hacksaw to cut the grippers It was easy to do.
Genuinely happy I watched this. I didn't even think of a few items talked about in this. But is lining paper really needed? I'm looking at getting some 12mm thick underlay for the warmth
Hi there, it's not a requirement. However, on timber flooring, it does help to protect the underlay and carpet from dust ingression through the subfloor and aids heat insulation too. I hope this helps 😊
@@bandq thanks for that. I actually have some thick brown paper on a role I should be able to use as will do the same job. Thanks for the reply though 😀
I'll be using a very thin carpet for my floors. I bought underlay as well. But now Im not sure if I'll be doing this right. Do I still use carpet grip? I mean, on my think carpet wouldn't the nails in the grip go right through? It's a really think carpet.
Great vids, really helpful! It is rather a shame B&Q don't seem to sell the Dial items you've used anymore, but found alternatives (after visiting several of your stores) ... except the floor lining paper which seems to have ceased existing in your stores altogether? Sad face :(
Thank you for your feedback! As this video is 9 years old, items used will have changed slightly or are no longer available. However, we're glad you've managed to find alternatives! Have a lovely day 😊
@@bandq I took another look and cleaned them up a bit. They seem pretty tight and firm, so think I'll proceed without plywood overboarding like you suggest. Thanks for confirming my suspicions! 🙂
Where the strips of underlay are joined and taped together…. How do you make it so that the tape doesn’t make a crinkling noise after the carpet is laid down? I had a large area of my underlay replaced and they joined the pieces using tape. Whenever I walk in that area I hear crinkling noises like someone is wearing a diaper !
Hi there, this shouldn't be the case following our step by step guide as everything should be secure. We would suggest speaking with the company that laid your flooring if you have any concerns.
Honestly, it's pretty annoying when clients loom over the people they've employed to help them, let alone direct them how to work according to a BnQ advert for aspirational DIYers. Pick someone you trust and head out for the day!
Hi there, on timber floors, it's recommended to use floor lining paper which helps protect the underlay and carpet from dust ingression through the subfloor. It also aids heat insulation too. I hope this helps! 😊
When a carpet has an obstacle as in a cable has been fitted around the floor can you still fit it as I have been told it cannot be put back as it was thaks
I laid mine with only a stanley knife and it looks exactly the same.... People are just too cautious these days and want a professional finish on everything. You don't need it, lol. It's nice to have but the underlay goes under the finished product. As long as you don't lay it skee-wiff or over the grippers you're pretty much good to go. Don't lay it upside down either, I did that the first time :(
Why did you look up the video? Yes, I want a professional finish because I want my home to look good. You do need the underlay to add some thickness to the floor so the carpet is roughly level with the grippers, and it does need fixing or there's a good chance it'll ride up when you start putting the carpet down. A carpet fitting kit costs £20 - hardly expensive, and worthwhile for getting a really good, neat finish. It'll last forever so I have it for when I need to fit carpets again, or if I'm helping a friend. I don't doubt you can do it with a Stanley knife, but you're making it harder for yourself.
Relied on this video to lay carpet for the first time and worked a treat. However watched it so many times that all I could hear was the presenter's weird inhale at 1:01-1:03... Listen for yourself and it will be etched into your soul...
If I don't want/need skirting boards - do I still need to leave a little tuck gap, between grippers and wall, all the way around the perimeter? If I leave that gap - will the carpet not eventually start to curl at the edges?
Thank you, Ryan. I've left about a cm gap between wall and grippers. Still got to get the carpet up the stairs, so I don't know how it will work out, but I think you are right about leaving a gap making the final results neater.
bat in the attic no problem if it helps you can use you old carpet (if you kept it) as a template and cut your carpet about an inch wider on every side just makes less to carry up stairs and less to trim away
So do i not need to use gripper in the door way?? I'll be using a capet strip to hide the join in the carpets so is it best to gripper across the doorway on both sides then put the finishing strip over the top??
I will correct you even with a finishing strips do use gripper because the carpet will go loose in the door way so should always be used in the door way unless a pinned naplock bar is going down which acts as gripper
Remember if you get a professional carpet fitter they prefer a cheque and they don’t mind moving pianos and large wardrobes or taking away any rubbish 😂
1 man 2 hours including removing old carpet, cleaning floor moving furniture cutting off the bottom of the doors Including delivery and a van with 5 grands worth of tools at your disposal. Also they want me to dispose of the rubbish, as a tradesman I can't use the local amenity tip so I have to pay a £40 minimum charge at our local trade waste . And they complain that a £30 charge is too much! DO YOU REALLY NEED TO BE A CARPET FITTER!?

Carpet grips are required to lay a carpet 😊
I just lifted laminate to have carpet fitted. Can I leave the laminate underlay down or does that need to be lifted too please?

Should I cover my floorboards with plywood first? If so, what thickness plywood is recommended?
If the floor boards are secure and in good condition then there should be no need to cover them with ply wood. Hope this helps! 😊

Munya Takavarasha don't. This video is for the average diyer not professional install

What is laid before the underlay?

Did they fit the underlay upside down? And why?
No. Rubber side down. Paper side up. Always

And they love to take up and take away your old carpet.
the condition of that underlay was no good enough to fit on
Looks like they dragged it out of a skip.
