Thanks for the tutorial. I've reserved a Home Depot knee kicker rental tomorrow for my Saturday afternoon project to reposition a small area of my living room carpet that is pulling away from the dining room transition strip. I feel confident after watching this that I'll do a good job.
Awesome how to video. Thanks for taking the time to explain the tricks in such a straightforward way. No fluff, no condescension, just a friendly mentor. The cool old guy on the jobsite showing the n00b all the useful tricks without showing off.
This was so helpful! The demo and explanation of position, posture, every little detail was exactly what I needed to have confidence doing that. It's clear you're 100% pros. Thank you!
I installed carpet for 30 years and the big mistake beginners make just like I was is to kick the carpet more than once in the same spot. If you do you will feel it in your knee more cuz the 2nd kicks not moving the carpet. Also leaning forward just a bit putting more weight down right where you're holding the kicker helps move the carpet more.
Great video. All tinny finesse points on how to use it. Tried it at first and realized I need help. You provided all little details one needs to know. Thanks 👊💪👍

This is the best video on use of the basic tools for those seeking to add carpet fitting to their skills! Any thoughts on techniques or appropriate methods for relaying carpet after a sliding wardrobe doors install? The wardrobe track is only a few millimetres high.
Thank you for these really helpful tips. I'm relaying carpet after a sliding wardrobe install but struggling to get it to hold back in. Presumably relaying carpet requires a more forceful stretch?
Wonder if I can get some knee kicker advice? I had a cat pee incident in a small hallway and I had trouble with the smell even after cleaning. After peeling back the carpet I realized it was the pad so I replaced that and now I’m trying to put back the carpet. The tack strips are fine. Should I stretch down the length of the hallway (it’s about seven feet) or across (4 feet) first? Logically I think it would be the long way first but I’m not sure.
Before you do the long way you have to stretch 3ft of the short side 1st then gi the long way and then finish back the rest of the short length. He should show how to do a room from start to finish. If your carpets not stretched that good it will start to get wrinkles. If your carpet didn't have wrinkles before and you get it back like before it should be fine.
It seems like there's a lot of impact to the kneel from using the kneel kicker. Just curious, will there be any permanent damage to the kneel over the long term. Cheers!
@fkloh3289 most lighter weight carpets stretches more unlike big thick higher pile carpets that should be installed with a power stretcher. The less the carpet stretches the more ow ezs 😢
Can it be done without using tack strips for a more casual carpet installation? This is in a small 13 foot room without anyone running around, and I'm wondering if just putting the baseboard molding on top would be sufficient. Otherwise I might just use some crown staples to hold it in place.
No speed catt to crease whilst kicking? That red handled tool, does it do much the same Ruben? Been looking for one in UK for ages and can't find em. T
Sweeny Todd used to have them in the UK. I ordered mine from Tools for flooring above. I also have one of the original speetcats with the adjustable wheels from about 25 years ago. I much prefer the eztuck to the speedcat
Don t forget that since Brexit there is no import duty to be paid on goods valued at under £130.00 .I just got a Kneeless carpet stretcher last week from Canada and have been playing with that for the last few days which has been fun. I have ordered loads of stuff from tools4flooring usually takes about two weeks to get to London
Always wondered ... thanks! Setting the teeth depth, I guess you have to get them so that they're deep enough, but not catching the underlay? Otherwise that will bunch against the tack strip? So, teeth right out would only suit a certain depth of carpet?
When you go to get your 1st stretch overlap the extra carpet that runs up wall back down over towards the kickers adjustable teeth dial while placing the kicker the right distance from the wall. Now you should just be able to see a very small space showing some of the tackstrip. This will help get a better stretch instead of it running up the wall. Generally the carpet stretches mostly the 1st stretch and the following kicks will not stretch as much and the overlapping back over the kickers head only works the 1st kick or stretch. Running the head of a hammer over the carpet will help set the tackstrip pins into the carpet as well as stepping directly down onto the strip if you have limited tools.
had a major sewage problem my master bathroon toilet blew out a ton of water so I am fanning out the unlaid carpet/padding. had a fan running at full blast for a few days! smells like a bait shop of long dead minnows! very pungient! the bildge water that came up did so after a hard rain too! from a citiy sewer so god only knows whose water it was! the carpet is salavageble but the padding will have to be replaced. but only in the area that was wet. I am wanting to just cut off some of the padding about 5x12 in the master bedroom where the disaster bildge water ended up! and wanted to know if I could just use a carpenter's knife to cut off the bad area and just replace the padding with new padding. my tack strips also got damaged. that will be the part I need special tools.
There are 4 sets of teeth on the kicker and generally there is a matching very short wire like cotton teeth to also help grip into the carpet yarn. Over time they will become clogged with yarn fibers. If not cleaned out it may cause the teeth to slip through the carpet leaving marks from the yanked out yarn or kicker burns. Kicking in the carpet to hard or multiple times in the same spot will have the same effect. Also when the carpet is stretched you'll know because the carpet has very little stretch left and you will fell it in your knee from hitting a stationary object. Your knee caps will thank you for always not using them to hit the pad. 😁
Much better leverage with kicker fully extended. In tight space, when using your kicker, be careful not to push off of sheet rock and break it like I did.

Very little, not enough to last long term getting wrinkles bubbles in your carpet
