In this video we test out Brian's resin and brass slug that uses a .27 cal. Hilti blank. Despite some failures in the test, we had several really good impacts.

Thanks to Brain and Shaun. You have a table! Yard Sale? Files got corrupted - it happens. Enjoyed the shots you showed us. First time for a "sneak preview"? Thanks for posting.
Jeff and Crew, Back in my early career while working for the Government as an Ordnanceman, they had quality first classes that they sent us to. anyway, your footage of the failures reminded me of those films we watched, they wanted us to realize that things go wrong if we weren't minding our quality with Explosive Ordnance, I found that some of the shots that were in those films entertaining, Like the Missile that lifts off, but then starts falling back to the pad, crumbling as a huge plum of fire engulf the launch pad. all kinds of stuff like that. Good video, Peace - Dave
That last headshot was amazing. The amount it expanded and bubbled. It looks like its gonna burst but just keeps warping and then finally you can see the can start to force itself through the top and everything comes spewing out. Freakin awesome.
I NEVER want to argue with you, but my understanding of the .27 cal blank in ammo, is that it is what helped create the 17WSM. That said, it was used a few years prior to this. Again, I NEVER want to say anything against your info Mr Jeff. I’m just bringing up what I have learned about my .17 WSM. Thanks for everything, sir!
See Hollywood, you CAN curve bullets! _(speaking to that last one curbing up and over Doug's* shoulder)_ This was great and I look forward to this new mini series! Which, if I may make a small request, although it might not work out: try at least ONE shot where a shell is filled with a couple of the blanks, to be like buckshot! 😊 [*he will *always* be Doug to me 😉]
@@benroberts3677 I wonder if just having them packed with a bunch of coffee grounds would be enough... The desire was to have them be like exploding buckshot. 😅 But yea, encasing a few in epoxy might be interesting as well! Or maybe superglue would be better, since it's way more fragile.
Love the addition of failures and sneek peek, one gives an insight of effort you put forward but without usable results and the other gives us something to look forward to. Great video as always looking forward to the next one 🍻

the problem is that the more exiting powders are not something I would load into the barrel of a gun. Also, since it's rim fire, you could design it so that the rim of the blank sits off of the slug, giving it room to maybe deform a bit better
Decades ago, we tried a similar load in a .45 acp. We tried a primer and a .22 short loaded upside down on a hp bullet. They would only explode if shot into a sheet of hard metal.

One of the findings on another ballistics testing video (Inrange as I recall) was that both to Russian and German explosive tipped WW2 sniper rounds did not go off within gel if there was only about two inches thick to pass through. But give it more like five inches or a hard surface to hit, it would go off.
Very cool idea! Absolutely loved the filler :) Amazing you got any shooting and slow motion videos with the slug release issue. Loved the slug design! Neat video guys - awesome work!
Ahhhhh, these videos are my shit. Good vibes and always good fun to watch! One of my favourite channels, especially when I get a bit california ballistically minded lol
Im not to sure how stable the following recipe is being shot out of a barrel but powder down KNO mix at a ratio of 60:40 with very dry powdered sugar and add a few grams of perchlorate. That was very interesting with a fuse. My yard wasn't the same the rest of the summer 😊
More fun with Jeff! 😂 Great stuff! The green beans are nice touch! Regarding adding Pyrodex and steel wool for effect, that was a chef’s kiss! Back years ago, before I learned how to make flash powder, I used Pyrodex to make big boomers for July 4th. A toilet paper roll and lots of stranded packing tape were my materials of choice. I don’t want to suggest something dangerous, but a small mix of KClO4 and 5 micron aluminum powder as the effect would pack lot more potential energy into that space, but it might not be a good idea… Although if it didn’t explode in the chamber from pressurization it would explode a head on impact! Just spit ballin ideas! 🤭
It would be interesting to load the blank with primer forward at the rear of the 'tube' and leave nothing ahead of it so the slug hits a bit before the blank sets off. That also may help stability having a heavier tail.
i’ve actually been designing a single shot breach load using these. Haven’t gotten far beyond a solid trigger lock and easier forms of extraction of blanks
Additional components? Try a mix of micronized aluminum powder (you should be able to order that) and milled amonium nitrate (you can grind down the prills from instant cold packs) use diesel fuel as a binder. The AN will be your oxidizer and the aluminum will provide both fuel and bright flash. The diesel binding agent will also be a secondary fuel. Ideally - you should end up with a very thick dark grey paste. (you'll need to fart with ratios on your own - i've said enoug), The .27 blank should be energetic enough to initiate that. If it wont go, try some nitromethane as a binder instead (rc car fuel) - but it'll make the compound a little more shock sensitive.
Probably not saying anything you don't already know, but if you drill holes in one of those magnesium fire starter blocks using a 1/8th inch bit you'll get very nice visual incendiary effects if you mix the shavings with regular 70/30 perchlorate/Al flash powder. Very hot and bright.
I was thinking you could just stuff some magnesium flakes in the cavity behind the blank. I didn’t even think to add flash, but that would make for a *spectacular* blow-up, hopefully at the target. I’m not sure what would happen if it went off before exiting the barrel. I also don’t remember what the Bureau would think of such things, I’m pretty sure they way more controlling about flash than they are for other pyrotechnics.
@@deltab9768 I thought anything aerial with under 5 grams of composition was federally fine, I'm no lawyer though. If a person wanted to stay in the realm of propellants, a lot of the niche .22lr rounds that are meant to be especially quiet use a tiny charge of a VERY fast, uncoated double base smokeless powder. It should be a good bit more spicy than Pyrodex.
Wow! I can’t believe how devastating the successful detonations were! Once they “iron the kinks” out of this whole idea, they’re gonna have something really special.
The hedgehog looks like you could glue some trim nails inside of those tubes around the outside of the Hilti blank. It would look a little more hedgehog like with spikes.
If you want the blanks to fire more consistently you need a impact 'ring' or impact point (like the pin on a hammer/bolt hitting the primer) my suggestion, get a steel spring that is almost as big around as the .27 blank, cut down the one side of the spring (length wise) which will make a bunch of 'rings' or mini washers, then just crazy glue them on directly to the blank shell on the BOTTOM of the primer point, that way at impact it should hit target - ring - blank - slug. That impact ratio should drive the ring into the base of the blank causing it to trigger.
holy shit im so excited for that hedgehog!!!!! rods from god series might honestly be my favorite... and ive been watching the channel for quite a while!
Someone had to ask, what about the lead plate? Hopefully with that really cool looking slug for the next one! That can if green beans will have to do. That was a real splash!
