  • Today we test out some very new slugs called "La Bombas" from Gun Runners Arsenal. (Google that for more info) Bigger and heavier than a 10ga. slug, these again show the versatility of the 12ga. do-it-all platform.

    Wierd Trivia: That East German helmet was designed in the late stages of WW2 as a way to cut costs from the Stahlhelm pattern by using a simpler pattern that wasted less steel.

    • @reeyuh526
      @reeyuh526 5 месяцев назад +5

      It's also probably the best steel helmet made. No steel helmets were designed to stop direct hits from bullets, must fragmentation or ricochets. The previous stalhelm or the US M1 at best stop low velocity rounds like .45 ACP.
      The Warsaw Pact helmets have best resistance due to most of their designs incorporating a slope, allowing some of them to stop even higher velocity rounds like 9mm or .357 magnum. The East German however has the most extreme angle, that with the right tempered steel, some helmets have resisted direct hits from AK47 rounds, at the very least, they all stopped 7.62 Tokarev rounds.
      If anyone doesn't find the Tokarev resistance impressive, just know that some modern kevlar helmets today still can't stop that round. It's got ridiculous penetration capability.

      Given that the vessel is a thinwalled lead shell, I imagine it's not going to be easy to get decent combustion out of smokeless. Smokeless needs quite a bit of pressure for it to burn properly. You might get it to pop a few times, but most of the energy you put into the charge will just be wasted. The burn rate of black powder isn't pressure-dependent. I think that, if you're going to go through the trouble of packing the slug with flash powder or something (capped off with a primer), then you might as well add something atop the slug that can fragment and cause some substantial secondary damage upon impact. Since this is a really large/heavy slug design, I'd like to see a version of the slug that is actually two pieces that stack or thread together. The bottom (base) portion should have a cavity and a hole for the primer, while the top is contoured for aerodynamics. It might need a hardened pin/screw/whatever bedded in the top portion (to ensure primer detonation) but that could likely be accomplished with just the lead.
    When you get projectiles like that that have cavitation towards the front with a solid rear, it is inherently going to be more susceptible to aerodynamic inconsistencies (like the wobble we saw here.) So if you can move the charge cavity to the middle or rear of the projectile, it will have enough mass forward of the COM that it should stabilize dynamically. Having the charge towards the rear of the projectile can also cause the gasses to push outward on the thinner walls (of the base of the projectile) and expand/fragment while still in the body. When you have the secondary explosion towards the front of the projectile, it will expand/fragment at the back of the target, if not outside in of the body. Basically, moving the charge to the back of the projectile will make it detonate closer to the entry point rather than the exit. That way, the forward momentum of the projectile and secondary detonation carry through the body earlier, increasing overall damage.
    Now, I've never actually tested this hypothesis myself. I don't really have the resources to conduct such an experiment myself at the moment. But I think that could make for a stellar experiment. In my mind, the internal charge being at the front of the projectile means that it will detonate closer to the exit than the entry, clearing a small hole towards the back upon exit. If you can prime the charge at the same moment, but have the actual cavity positioned at the rear of the projectile, then you'll have the secondary detonation closer to the entry point and have more time after the detonation inside the body for the drag/shock to damage the internals.

    What are the size requirements for a slug to run properly through a barrel of a shotgun? And how can you tell if slugs can be safely shot through a shotgun? I was looking at guns in a pawn shop one time and they showed me a gun that appeared to have a buldge 2/3s down the barrel that I assumed was a failed attempt at shooting a slug down the bore. Your videos are great to watch thanks for the effort and detail.

    • @zackzittel7683

    Hey Jeff and O G , with the base wad attached the projectile was to long for the twist rate of the barrel . When the base wad could separate the slug could stabilize . The longer the projectile the more spin it needs to stabilize . This is why the new rifles and cartridges with heavy for caliber ( and longer ) bullets have faster twist rates ( say from 1 in 10 to. 1 in 8 or faster ) depending on caliber . Thanks for all your hard work !……

    • @randomidiot8142
      @randomidiot8142 Год назад

      The larger flat base 12 gauge slugs don't need a twist rate like a small bore btbt bullet does. Even if they were shooting boat tail spitzers they wouldn't need a twist rate over 1:15. .50 bmg subs can run the 1:15 just fine, a 1:8 or 9 in a supersonic .50 is absolutely ridiculous and does interesting things to targets, and a 1:8 12 gauge would start disintegrating soft slugs in flight from the centrifugal force.

    • @thomasdaum1927
      @thomasdaum1927 Год назад

      @@randomidiot8142 I didn’t say the slug needed a 1 in 10 or a 1 in 8 I was using that as an example for longer projectiles . I was saying the slug with the added length of the base wad needed a faster twist rate to stabilize .

    To be more effective, it should have some sort of frangible, hardened metal cylinder inside (the lead is way to soft), and only the outer surface should be lead or copper, so that when it explodes, it will emit lots of shrapnel like a grenade. Another easier way to do it, would be to turn the hollow cylinder on a late out of brass and make it just so that it fits snug in a rifled shotgun.
