Mutant Academy 2 was my first exposure to console fighting games. I was 5 years old and didnt know what i was doing, but i had so much fun! I would cry happy tears if a new X-Men fighting game came out.
The first one is entirely serviceable. The second one, however, expands everything and was amazing. I legit recently played it this week and the combos are still so satisfying. The 3rd one tried a completely new thing and was not great. Thanks for this video!
didn't even know there was a third one. But I remember when I unlocked Spiderman in the 2nd one, I was so excited! It was a complete surprise for me since I didn't know he was in the game.
I loved this game so much. I still have both for PS1 and the Third on PS2. Although Next Dimension wasn't nearly as good. I used to play it on the Connectix VGS emulator with my friends at school 🙂 I never hear anyone ever mention these. Your fight game coverage continues to impress. Thanks for calling these out!
my very first game for my ps1 was a demo disc with multiple on it, most importantly this game. i replayed it so many times my parents finally bought it for me. 😂
I absolutely loved this game! My older brother played it a lot. He had the edge at first but I was able to close the gap with cyclops specifically. He would pick juggernaut when he wanted to stop being nice and win 😂
I have many fond memories of Mutant Academy 2, I remember arcade mode being hard as hell so i would just use the cheat code to unlock the secret characters. towards the end my disc was so scratched that each fight would take 2 minutes to load but i would still play it😂😂
Please do videos on mortal kombat 3 (& UMK3), Tekken 2, DOA2, & Soul Calibur 3. As well as videos on the Godzilla fighting games, Blazblue, SNK's World Heroes, Primal Rage, Mace The Dark Age, Sonic The Fighters, & Pokken Tournament
These were some of the first fighting games I ever played as a kid. I was a huge X-Men fan so I remember playing Mutant Academy 1 & 2 as well as Next Dimension. I tried them again rather recently and they hold up pretty OK. Wish I could find a way to play Next Dimension because I haven't been able to find one yet.
This was one of my favorite ps1 games. Wolverine had the sickest grab of any fighting game. He would jump off his opponent Over their shoulder and as they turned their head wolverine would hit them with a kick launching his opponent across the stage. What made it so cool was the way they animated it. The way the camera spun around and the screen paused for a second, just long enough for you to think " oh crap " before getting blasted.
Thank you so much for making this video and your content in general. You don’t understand how often x men video games live in my head! I’m a comic book guy obviously but I have all the games and play them regularly and to see content on them makes me so happy. It’s a niche now until Disney bring them back which has been bubbling since the dawn of the millennia, however I do appreciate your content it’s so top tier and incessantly reminds me of x men video game goodness along with your social commentary well done and thank you
Can someone help? I remeber playing on my ps1 an classic 2d fighting game of X-Men I remeber only the aquarium stage playing as cyclops against storm Juggernaut was thrown there too I guess it was based on X-Men evolution series tho...
Man I remember seeing this game in a comic and needing to play it, but it never got released in my country and I never came across anyone who heard of this game much less had it
"May make a video for it"? That's Mr. Top Hat Gaming's way of saying for to expect to see it in the next 3 months, yay. Unlike when our mum and pops say "Maybe....", Top Hat Gaming means it.👍💗
Still have my original copy. If you haven't, you should also cover X-Men Next Dimension (PS2) era. It had a much larger roster of 28 X-Men (4 of them are secret characters).
@@DanPantzig Yeah, I know. I only recommended it out of pure nostalgia. The game had so many playability issues it's no wonder it was ever greenlit anyway. I hope we'll see a better 3D Marvel-Only fighter in the future that has actual polish. I have nothing against Capcom, but I kinda want to see what other developers can do. Maybe Arc System Works?
Not everyone was an X-Men (2000) movie fan. I didn't mind, but I had many caveats. PS2 was new and hot, and PS1 was at its end. So, when a game came out, that one, and it was a Fighter, well, I took it as a TMNT Tournament Fighters type. It wasn't until Marvel vs Capcom, that people gave it a chance based on SF and the X characters being shown on the cover as their comic book counterparts.
As an X-Men fan, the films were the worst at casting, depictions, and plot. The Marvel Comics version of the X-Men would easily destroy the 20th Century Fox versions of the characters, if there were a multiverse crossover. Also, Marvel vs. Capcom did a better job at depicting their superpowers.
I thought it was great! From what I remember Gambit and Beast were cut last minute from the film. I wonder if those costumes were what they were going to look like?
I saw this video's thumbnail after watching a gaming video, and had to watch. My brother owned this game when we were kids. When I played, I was prone to spamming throws and the hard punches. This game is why I always think fighting games aren't my forte, even though I have gotten into the Mortal Kombat series and played the Injustice games.
I feel like you purposely showed the old X-Men #1 cover when talking about the Jim Lee cover X-Men #1 knowing full well someone would comment and thus helping yourself in the algorithm... You devious bastard.
I LOVE this game and its good to see it getting some attention. I spent countless hours in Survival Mode and thought that offered a unique play mode for a fighting game when it came out. Seeing a video on MA2 and Next Dimension would be awesome. I liked MA2 a lot but I could never find it in stores, and just rented it a bunch.
I used to hang out with these two guys from Essex who I became friends with. They got so owned by me on this game. Their reactions were bloody hilarious man.
I vaguely remember this game. I had the Playstation, but rarely played it because I spent so much time on the Saturn. When we did play it, we were playing Tekken, Battle Arena Toshinden or the Soul Edge/Calibur series. This game was late to the party and looked tragic compared to the Capcom games that proceeded it.
It was hard for this particular game to gain any type of success due to how amazing X-Men vs Street Fighter and other 2D fighters that follow the same formula were! I remember being at a Pizza Hut across town and the manager had to tell us that the arcade machines were for customers that we’re waiting for their orders only. So we all scraped up enough money to purchase two pizzas 🍕 We purchased 45 minutes in between so that we always were waiting for an order😅
Funny they mention Thrill Kill, there were bootlegs that got around, mine had the bosses unlocked and the normal game tracks replaced with copyrighted music.
I miss these games. Next Dimension was my favorite, except for the load times. I wouldn't mind playing another one of these built from the ground up and made for the current generation.
Nostalgia engaged! Lol Thanks for this awesome video! Please cover X-Men Next Dimension (PS2, Xbox, etc.) @ some point. That one was TRULY JANKY, but fun. Lol Keep up the great work! 😎
The tragedy is that the mid-90s SEGA console games were often developed just like this--in a terrible rush due to sudden changes in the roadmap from SoJ. As many games were canceled in those years as released, and several franchises saw no sequel at all. Compare SEGA's arcade division to their console business. Lots of game companies were rushing absolute garbage out to store shelves on impossible deadlines.
I totally saw this game cover "everywhere" back when it came out but i never knew anyone that had actually played it, looking at it now i'm surprised the game\series didn't have a longer lasting run. Could you imagine if they had kept up and been able to consistently improve it? Marvel vs Capcom Infinite might not have been created essentially killing the chances of a great Marvel fighting game.

And the PS2 follow-up X-Men Next Dimension?

@waelalabri7219 RIGHTT?? dannggg
X-men mutant academy was such an underrated game! I had a blast with that game on PS1 💯💯💯
Also why Marvel Nemesis is ignored
That game is awesome, but the story mode was lackluster and the characters were really unbalanced and stage hazards were nuts lol😊
....cause it was trash
A underrared game I miss playing it on the PSP and a sequel was almost finished but then got cancelled this game need a remaster or something.
Game wasn't good but was okay
@@silenceone31
It didn't offer as much gameplay and multiplayer options as Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
The story sucked and the game is broken.
Well, didn’t know this game existed. A pleasant surprise. Thank you for sharing this and backing it up with a great first-hand account!
The second Game is really fun 😊
@@bernardocatrilef2846 no one remembers the Gameboy color X-Men academy ? That was actually a good fighter for the gbc

Under appreciated. Loved this game. Felt cutting edge to me at the time.
Just like the Capcom game, some of the voice actors from the animated series voiced the characters in that game which was another good highlight
I loved this game so much. I still have both for PS1 and the Third on PS2. Although Next Dimension wasn't nearly as good. I used to play it on the Connectix VGS emulator with my friends at school 🙂

My older brother introduced me to Mutant Academy 2 on his PS1 and when he gave me his original Xbox, I owned Next Dimension
Such memories!!! Remember the magazines had iceman and apocalypse in the game but omitted them later on
This is one of my lost gems of my ol playstation.. I totally forgot I had this game.. I had over 200 games for that PS1 back in the day..
my very first game for my ps1 was a demo disc with multiple on it, most importantly this game. i replayed it so many times my parents finally bought it for me. 😂
I was younger so I hated this game without even playing it because I was mad capcom lost the license to use marvel characters at the time
I don't see why Marvel would make this decision,
because Capcom & Sega is better than Paradox & Activision.
I absolutely loved this game! My older brother played it a lot. He had the edge at first but I was able to close the gap with cyclops specifically. He would pick juggernaut when he wanted to stop being nice and win 😂

Bit like MK4.
2D fighter trying to be 3D

I never really thought these were ignored. I guess cause I used to play 1 and 2 all the time
I love the 90s comic book art style of the game. I think i might give it a go.
Never heard of this game. Besides SF VS X-Men, I think the 1st Children of the Atom fighting game was AWESOME

God I miss this game.😊
Both of them are AMAZING
The biggest mistake about Mutant Academy:
Porting the game to the GBC instead of the GBA, MK4 also messed up on that opportunity.
I want an X-Men fighter in the Bushido Blade vein. Rouge touched you? You are dead.
