I just want to state that I experienced this game through my cousin who did a play-through for me to understand the Metal Gear Solid plot line. I never made the basic assumption about the difference in time from MGS 1 to Snake Eater, even though it was blatantly obvious. I went through the entire game thinking the main character was Solid Snake, even making remarks to my cousin on how Naked Snake would gain back his vision from losing his eye through MGS bullshit nano-technology. It wasn't till the very end where Naked Snake was given the title Big Boss that it hit me like a FUCKING SEMI! It wasn't suppose to be a mind fuck, but it fucked mine unintentionally. My words during the reveal was, "Ha, this is a joke right...WHAT IN THE EVER LIVING FUCK! HOW?! WHAT?! WHY?! I'M RETARDED!"
I know im about 3 or so years late to the party, but holy shit that's hilarious.

To my cousins credit, he didn't acknowledge what I said. Later, when I found the second corpse. I freaked out.

I fucking love the intro to this game, it is just like a bond film: crazy graphics and a titular theme song. And damn is snake eater an amazing song
I've always liked Naked Snake (Big Boss) over Solid Snake because of that smile as well. That smile shows that he is a person, not just a character. He saw something, thought of how he could use it to his advantage, and responded when he came up with an answer. You don't often see that realistic action in video game characters, but when you do it's great.

This is one of my favorite games. The story here is perfect without going too complicated. The gameplay is simple to understand along with the survival element which adds to the experience. This was the game that made me fall in love the Metal Gear franchise.

Johnny, so you said, the game portable was running slow? For some reason MGS games on portables(not counting the GBC game) are locked in 20FPS...
If you're gonna play Portable Ops, play on PPSSPP and find on it's forums a "cheat" to run the game at 30FPS(60 breaks the game, everything run twice the normal speed). This will make the game lots better.

Snake Eater 3D is how I first experienced and beat MGS3, definitely have a soft spot for it. It's not perfect even remotely but any port that forces you to ask "why the hell did they do this?" is a port worth my commitment.
Man, coming back to this marathon, now of all times, it is very funny to hear "this is the last time I have to worry about major re-releases" in relation to MGS3 in particular.

It was less about "connecting" with Raiden in MGS2 as a character and more about putting yourself into the game as Raiden.
There's a reason his name is Jack.
A jack is normally a word used for describing a port or entrance to a computer to connect something with.
Jack (You) had to infiltrate Big Shell. A shell is a user interface for access to an operating system's services.
And you took orders from. Who? Colonel? No. A literal Kernal. A computer Kernal.
A kernel is a computer program that is the core of a computer's operating system, with complete control over everything in the system.
The entire game pushes you in the direction to believe EVERYTHING is being simulated. It's all just one huge VR mission.
Raiden (at first) is nothing but a symbol to represent yourself. This is also why he is androgynous, so that someone of any gender can put themselves in that place easier.
It's all a metaphor.
By the end, Jack becomes aware of your control and then finally removes himself from you.
Signified by him throwing away the dog tags he wore with your name on them.
It was always about being Raiden. Being there (or not there...) yourself. Raiden is you.
Having the same "What the absolute fuck is happening" thoughts he did. Because. You did have those thoughts.
You are Raiden.
It's only in the end that Raiden becomes an established character and in MGS4 by giving him his memories of MGS2 as PTSD (which is completely understandable, my god.)
and retconning the implications of MGS2 being a simulation where none of the events actually happened.
(Another mind blowing little fact I love is by this logic with Raiden being you and Raiden stating he's run through simulations of Shadow Moses before.
This implies that YOU playing MGS1 is the same thing. Snake in MGS2 mentions that Raiden's simulations of Shadow Moses may not even be accurate of what actually went down.
The MGS1 we played may not even be what actually happened to Solid Snake because it was all just a simulation... Your experience playing MGS1 is possibly all a lie.)

Imma be honest, I think while this is probable I don't think it's true. For one kojima would've needed to have the entire series already mapped out for that to even make sense at all.
And secondly, while MGS is complicated it's never been over complicated. Everything you need to piece the story together is already there.
No need for giant leaps of logic (like MGS1 being a VR mission) are needed to understand what is going on during the story.
I also think that kojima himself would've thought this was obtuse and just way to overly complicated for what is ultimately a wacky stealth series that takes itself completely and unflinchingly straight faced. Which is part of the charm of the series itself.

*Happy new year!* What better way to celebrate than with a review of my favourite MGS game!
My personal favorite game of all time it was the first story driven game I beat and it sticks with me to this day. At the end of the PS2 cycle I finally bought one and purchased all the classics for $10-$20 or less (I remember buying mgs 2 for like $3). I purchased and played all of ratchet and clank, jak and daxter, GTA, GOW, FFX. That period of my life was one of my most memorable gaming experiences and snake eater stands out in my memory to this day.
What a wonderful way to start my morning and end 2015! This is my favorite MGS game! :D I love you Johnny!

This is probably the funniest review I've seen you make thus far. So many jokes are made, and pretty much all of them work, esp. in the gameplay section! I think it's the fact that you usually don't joke that much in videos as well as your blend of absurdist and dry humor that makes so many jokes work. Viewers never know where and what to expect in a joke from you, and that makes them work so well.

Tbh, I forgot I even had a 3ds because I played the vita so much.
Yeah the Vita version has both MGS2 and MGS3 in HD and also has the 2 MSX computer games included. Vita costs the same as New 3DS XL but does come with a charger and also a memory card. Hell the current bundle comes with a free digital copy of Borderlands 2. Also all PSN PSP games are backwards playable. Plays PSone titles through remote play and also purchasable digitally trough PSN Store. Plays HD movies through the Netflix App. Also a Hulu App. And if you have 2 PS Vitas connected to your PSN account you can download virtually 2 copies of all digital PSN Games. But SwissArmyTin is right. I'm just lying to myself :(...
The Vita is a great console, only issue is that it's lacking in games. I mean I own one but I can't recommend it unless it goes on a price drop. The touch screen is kinda clunky though, only technical issue I have with it.

MGS3 is tied with MGS1 for me as the best of the series, but I’ve played all the Kojima-directed games of the series (besten all of them but MG2:SS) and I love the whole series. It’s one of my favorite franchises. Right up there with Kingdom Hearts and Danganronpa.

I completely disagree about the cure/life/stamina system. That system was one of the most creative things I've seen in a game. It made possible all kinds of interesting situations and multiple ways to fight bosses.
I'm doing a Spider Camo run on Hard mode as we speak
Diana I love the Cure menu. It's cool to see all the different ways Snake can get sick and injured. It's also cool to see the bleeding effect on the health bar.
My issue is with the stamina system. It depletes too slowly for you to need food on a regular basis.
I think a better way to implement food is have it restore health instead of stamina.
They should've gotten rid of Snake's stamina entirely. It isnt like there are any major consequences to having low stamina. Yeah, Snake's aim gets worse and his stomach growls but it's rare to be that low on stamina, and when you are, all it takes is a few rations to fill up.
Rations and noodles are all you really need. You can get through the entire game just fine without eating animals so it really isnt as survival focused as it may seem.
If not getting rid of stamina, maybe make it deplete faster and take away your ability to do CQC when stamina is low.

Where the fuck is the Pachinko Version?
Using a circle pad pro or New 3DS coes set the face buttons to standard contextual inputs. You have to turn it on in the settings though. I have a feeling he didn't do that because he got that point wrong.

MGS HD collection is also on the PS vita and its a much better handheld experience than snake eater 3D
As someone who also owns the Vita version, I wholeheartedly agree, but the PS3 version is much better. The Vita controls are just fine but the touch controls take a bit of time to get used to. Still a good version of the game though if you have no other way to play the game.
yup the ps3 version is better but the vita version is far superior to the 3ds version in every way

Thing is what makes me pretty mad is that people are already criticizing if just because it's a Sonic Boom title. Thing is they need to wait until the game comes out before criticizing it. I enjoyed shattered crystal enough (no one gives it credit for being the game to get multiple characters that play like sonic but slightly different without losing speed better without having to pick just one to play as the whole game) and it was clearly better than rise of lyric that if they can deliver on improving the formula it could easily be a good game

Also, you're definitely not alone in being attached to Snake from the way he smiles at the beginning of the game -- one of the defining features that separates Big Boss from Solid and Liquid (not so much Solidus) is that he has more of a personality than those two -- there's a lot of information on the Metal Gear Wiki about how the clones were essentially engineered to be gruff killing machines with no-nonsense attitudes, whereas Big Boss's more natural upbringing led him to be a more relatable character (it's also supposed to help us understand his motivations a bit more, if I remember correctly).

This was the Last Good Metal Gear game... Nothing Beat the First Trilogies...
MGS4 was just...Okay... But it wasn't as good like Mgs1, 2 and 3. And MGS5 was Terrible in my opinion. Great Review man! Happy new Year! :)

I think Kojima wanned to make this game a Joke for Konami... Fucking the Story so that they will have a Hard time to Connect the Dots with an Other games...
When i finished it i though... Big Boss was Kojima, Mother based is Konami... He try to get out of Konami... He put a "Medic" to his place so he can Go and make its own Games the way he likes. :P
