But best of all - CATAPHRACTS!!! :)
Pre-internet time was the best time for casuals playing within their friend circle. It feels great to figuring something new and suddenly dominate your friends for a while until everyone start doing the same and the race to find new strategy begins anew. I kinda miss those days.

@@Lapantouflemagic0 you cant expect ranged to be at an equal in close combat. their hp and armor is low, they are meant to be kept at a distance at all times. mixing them up with pikemen makes for a near perfect team, keeps them safe from cavalry attacks. if you want to counter archer ai you should use skirmishers, their sole purpose is to be anti archers. they have a damage bonus towards archers and a base high damage mitigation against ranged attacks. for elite skirmishers its higher than the paladins. a formation full of skirmishers would counter the near perfect archer and pikeman team its funny that even the arbalest(er), the last upgrade for archers tree, appears to be wearing full heavy armor. but their attack and ranged migitation is still at 0, and their hp is 40, only 10 points higher than the archer. so no matter how it appears, you really dont want these guys to invite the enemy into a close combat duel. hit and run is the only way, or having a wall of infantry or cavalry to hide behind

Last thing, since I’m not as familiar with whatever iteration of AOE2 this is (I only have the original version and conquerors edition), britons are the kind of archers you want - longbowmen
That's the kind of friend that would push you into a horde of zombies to buy more time for himself/herself to escape. I don't have time for those sorts of people.
except if u play as lakota, u can place city center everywhere as long its not enemy territory, u can squeeze out your opponent border so hard that they might lose coz they had nowhere to build city center
1. tower rush was nerfed when watch tower hp down from 1020 to 700 in feudal. 2. goths need to be rushed before they can build a castle since they can't make huskarls before building a castle, otherwise you have to focus on defending yourself until you get to imperial age and champions and paladins to deal with them possibly... 3. villagers for inca require castle age to be able to get blacksmith upgrades removing this kind of rush. 4. fortress kind of maps need their rms file updated to include corners.
One of the most terrifying aspects of late game Goths is just how few 'normal' comps stack up to them. Play archer, meet Huskarl. Switch to cavalry, entire legions of halberds show up. Switch to infantry, and now you're fight inf v. inf against one of the prime infantry civs. Either be a real infantry civ to match them or hope gunpowder works.

Pulling off my first successful goth DRush into man at arms was a real coming of age moment. I tried the Korean tower rush while it was still feasible and never got it to work right
The tower hop on 100% legit. They build a siege tower, one of the points was to mount the wall. With your own stairwells and all its super easy barley an inconvenience.
I mean, huskarls were literally made to hard counter archers. That's like getting mad that someone made skirmishers because you sent an army of archers at him.

I remember from the first AOE the tower rush nonsense. There are a few things like that that destroy the idea of each faction fighting it out, these 'video game' tactics are best left out for multiplayer there should be an option to not allow players to do this, in essence, hacking of a very good game.
Disagree! If viable strategies only involved building up and 'fighting it out' you would make the game be much more of a coinflip for civ matchup than a skill exchange. These crazy all in strats make it interesting and make unexpected plays possible, hence increasing variability of the game.
More strategies = more fun. Less strategies = less fun. Besides you can host a custom game with a longer treaty to stop early aggression. The game already has you covered.
I’m not very knowledgeable about this game, I only started playing it properly a few days back. But why would you leave the corner empty like that at 2:57? It feels like that tower thing could have been easily avoided
its auto generated wall on one of map styles. Kinda forgot the name, i think it was "fortress" but not sure. It would be possible to quickly build something in that place but in dark and feudal age time and villager focusing on rescources is essential

I always felt like Rise of Nations fixed a lot of the tower rush strategies by forcing you to build within your borders/near a city center

I've seen worse tower strategy. The great wall of tower at the only entrance to the enemy base.

They always follow enemy troops until large chunk of my army executes an unplanned attack on enemy base
