The slow speed wasn’t much of an issue for me because the combat chess aspect of Doom is still there. Every enemy has their own strengths and weaknesses, which fits with your guns and their strengths and weaknesses. You have to identify the enemy, what moves they have, where they are, then use the right gun for the right situation. Plus, it’s still mobility based. You still have to dodge projectiles. So the core gameplay loop that I liked about Doom is still there, and that aspect also keeps the game from being repetitive as I have to constantly change tactics on the fly. The slow speed simply added to the atmosphere and encouraged me to explore its world more. As much as I love Doom 2016, the fast speed meant a lot of the fantastic art direction ended up blurring past me due to me just continuously pushing forward.

Must have had this game on all platforms and actuallu reinstalled it last weekend. Weird this video popped into my feed. But this game is an absolute masterpiece. I adored the lore, the horror. When you are pushed agajnst the wall, the thrill of the encounter. Fantastic game.
As an old fart, the main problem I had with Doom 3 was that it wasn't a *Doom* game. It wasn't a terrible game in and of itself and it would probably have been hailed as a fantastic horror classic if it had a different name on the box. By the time Doom 3 was released it had been roughly a decade since Doom 2 and shooters had long since started moving in the modern direction of more realistic and military scenarios (Counterstrike, Rainbow Six, Call of Duty, Battlefield 1942 etc.), meaning that a spooky fast paced shooter was needed by fans. This is especially true if you weren't into Quake's multiplayer games, meaning that you hadn't played an Id-style campaign since 1997. And then you get a really pretty, fairly spooky but *annoying* shooter to play with the classic Doom nostalgia goggles on. Enemies were essentially cheating by spawning on top of you, coming out of flat textures on the wall behind you and attacking you in the dark. Yes, it's a fantastic use of lighting in a game but god damn was it annoying as a *Doom game* that I had to switch between flashlight and gun while moving at the speed of my then 86-year-old grandmother. It was certainly a bold move but also a very risky one, taking a franchise that basically invented the modern fast paced FPS game with frantic single and multiplayer gameplay and turning it into a relatively slow, deliberate horror game where you can choose between seeing and being helpless (the exact opposite dynamic of the FPS power fantasy the franchise is known for) or being able to kill stuff. I'd never advise anyone I'd do marketing for to make such a move with the main title and *especially* not a full reboot. Maybe a spin-off or something but certainly not turning the iconic Doom Guy into my grandmother.
I was 14 when it came out. It was truly impressive for it's time. I always liked the OG Doom and I still think that one is the best in the series and one of the best games ever, but nowadays I think this game (at least the BFG Edition, because fuck carrying a flashlight separately) is better than Doom 2016. Actually, Doom 2016 borrowed a lot of stuff from this one, but Doom 3 just nailed the overall atmosphere for me. The first time I came to Hell in Doom 3 was one of the most unforgettable moments I had in all my gaming life.
@@-Zakhiel- lmao I prefer the original Doom 3, but the BFG ain't so bad. I'd rather FrenZon's duct tape mod take on the flashlight though, smaller and weaker, and only for the shotgun and machine gun. It makes it a bit easier but doesn't take away from the experience. Personally, it'd be better if id just went with that instead of the shoulder-mounted flashlight.
doom 3 was not amazing for the gameplay, but how it revolutionized the video game engine scene is definitely worth respect Anyone remember gaming before bumpmapping?
Appart for the basic low poly characters, the game environnement still looks amazing today. Like in a good horror movie, the lightning is what it makes it great. BFG edition just look ugly in comparison, textures are all greyish, the lightning is flat, and the constant use of your flashlight kills the mood.
You've pretty much got my favorite Doom 3 review. You covered every point I liked from Doom 3. The User Interaction is really good, and rarely replicated that well even today. The way the lore is presented to the player. Commentary on the Combat being good, but still suffering from the new pace. It's fantastic. It's worth pointing out that Doom 3 influenced the action horror genre very heavily. Dead Space has cited Doom 3 as as a fairly major influence, and you can see that with the audio logs and e-mails strewn about both games. Heck, you can think of Dead Space as very much like Doom 3 with a completely different combat system. And really, you tend to see a lot of that in modern games with more horror leanings. It didn't have the same impact on action games as a whole that the original did, but I feel like Doom 3 had a pretty prominent influence regardless, especially considering how mature gaming was by the time Doom 3 came out.
I remember the very first time I saw Dead Space. Couldn't get too much into it since that time because it just screamed "This is Doom 3 in 3rd person" for me back then.
Doom 3 was alright. I bought it mostly to see what my Athlon 64 3400+ and 6800GT were capable of at the time. It definitely took a back seat to HL2, HL2DM, and CSS once they released.

Never liked the flashlight. I find it cumbersome and more irritating having to switch between the two. Sure it’s tense but I just don’t believe that the marines didn’t have attachments for there weapons
I don't understand why this game is so hated by so many people - I saw some nagative reviews years ago and what you say in this video just adds to it. For me it is one of my favorite games of all time and the graphics were amazing at the time and still look pretty good today for the most part. Mostly it is just people complaining about the flashlight while ignoring the perfect claustrophopic horror atmosphere it creates. The only complaint I have is that bosses are mostly too easy (especially sabaoth when soul cube is charged - come on, that's just pathetic :D other than that it is perfect - they use most of classic monsters and remake them in an original way while adding a few new ones - speaking of... the Cherub is one of my favorite ones because it was the only one that truly scared me while playing for the first time
I know people shit on Doom 3 for not being fast paced but they did make one of the scariest games I had ever seen before I desensitized myself to scary games
I love Doom 3, I like the way they went for a more horror based approach and the atmosphere and feel of the game is different. Cut them some slack, they have the right to experiment. They gave you Doom 1 and 2, let them try something new, people should give them a break. You can’t complain anyway because Doom 2016 is mind blowing... it blew all our minds, my actual brains splattered on the wall. I love 3
I have played both the original and the bfg edition where you have a flashlight attached on the armour. It is easier to fight in the bfg edition because of that but never bothered me, the original was a little bit scary yeah but after you beat the original, you should go for another round on the bfg and also the expansions.

I was really hyped for doom 4 and it lived up to a lot of my expectations, but i never found the atmosphere being quite as it was in doom 3. Especially because in doom 3, the facility makes sense. The environment and all the tech just looks as if you were in an actual space base. In doom 4, too many panels are just useless and while the interaction animations are really good, there are too few differnent ones of them imo. Also fuck glory kills. The game almost forces you to do them with the damage of the weapons being just enough to glory-kill enemies but not quite to finish them and glory kills on higher difficulty are risky as fuck. Also breaks up the gameplay way too often. Man, i miss the interactable computers from doom 3. Also the PDAs told a pretty cool story if you read them. I hoped for some kind of 4th-wall breaking a bit with doom 4, but we got a lame generic story about doom guy just being unbeatable - wow. Why not make the first statement of the game, about you being worse than the demons, apply to the player, because every player doesn't stop unitl the game is finished without any mercy whatsoever? Why not make doomguy the scary guy that he is because he always comes back after dying, no matter how often the demons kill him; and that drives them insane because they just can't get rid of him, no matter how often they rip him apart? No matter how often he suffers, he won't quit until it's done, because doomguy is the player and the player doesn't care? Instead of making him just a super cool dude that was uplifted by some angels. That's just really generic...

The first time I came to Hell in Doom 3 was one of the most unforgettable moments I had in all my gaming life.
i love this channel , keep it coming
Nice video mate. Very well done.
To this date, I still don’t like the original mechanics, I rather go with BFG Edition
"I rather go with BFG Edition"
You... You monster ! :'o
@@-Zakhiel- lmao
I prefer the original Doom 3, but the BFG ain't so bad. I'd rather FrenZon's duct tape mod take on the flashlight though, smaller and weaker, and only for the shotgun and machine gun. It makes it a bit easier but doesn't take away from the experience. Personally, it'd be better if id just went with that instead of the shoulder-mounted flashlight.
doom 3 was not amazing for the gameplay, but how it revolutionized the video game engine scene is definitely worth respect
Anyone remember gaming before bumpmapping?
Great video. A pity the picture is stretched, though.
Appart for the basic low poly characters, the game environnement still looks amazing today. Like in a good horror movie, the lightning is what it makes it great. BFG edition just look ugly in comparison, textures are all greyish, the lightning is flat, and the constant use of your flashlight kills the mood.
Best review channel ever
amazing game, its sound and pace is second to none
Excellent review!
Got the bfg version in vr,you can hold the torch in one hand and gun in the other.Really great in vr and looks amazing.
oh god, it must be amazing 😍
Doom 3 was alright. I bought it mostly to see what my Athlon 64 3400+ and 6800GT were capable of at the time. It definitely took a back seat to HL2, HL2DM, and CSS once they released.
Clutch it like a cornerstone otherwise it all comes down.
The main theme sounds like The Grudge, not Lateralus
Great video like usual
so are you gonna finish the series? doom 64 + lost levels expansion was just released for ps4 and xbox one, or theres doom 64 ex for pc which isnt 100% faithful to the n64 port like the console ports are
I noticed the Metroid Prime resemblance too with the PDA files. Also the doors sealing during combat at times is a similar trope as well.
12:23 "Keep all your weapons" Point of order : Right in the middle of the game, they strip you of your weapons. And do it to you again in Doom '16. Both times while surrounded by the bigger nasty bastards.
Granted you had meant after death and reload, but... Un-godamned nice of them. 570 ups. : )
Certainly my favourite in the series.
Never liked the flashlight. I find it cumbersome and more irritating having to switch between the two. Sure it’s tense but I just don’t believe that the marines didn’t have attachments for there weapons
11:20 took me by surprise when you said railgun instead of chaingun :D
that game was rly scary. the thought das they opened a portal to hell deep in the toombs was so terrifying
Good times.
Back when we saw the first pictures of this and Half Life 2, via PC Games CDs or other magazines...
Hey ColorShed, what are your thoughts on the new Red Dead Redemption 2 game?
Awesome stuff man, cant wait for the gta 5 review tho
I don't understand why this game is so hated by so many people - I saw some nagative reviews years ago and what you say in this video just adds to it. For me it is one of my favorite games of all time and the graphics were amazing at the time and still look pretty good today for the most part. Mostly it is just people complaining about the flashlight while ignoring the perfect claustrophopic horror atmosphere it creates. The only complaint I have is that bosses are mostly too easy (especially sabaoth when soul cube is charged - come on, that's just pathetic :D other than that it is perfect - they use most of classic monsters and remake them in an original way while adding a few new ones - speaking of... the Cherub is one of my favorite ones because it was the only one that truly scared me while playing for the first time
why if i turn the volume up to 100 its as quiet as it would be at 5?
Great video
hey man please consider in the future review for a MediEvil series for PS1
I know people shit on Doom 3 for not being fast paced but they did make one of the scariest games I had ever seen before I desensitized myself to scary games
Im planing on buying doom 2 and 3 for my switch after my graduation
I do miss the days when PDA only stood for Personal Data Assistant.
I love 3
Nice vid
I have played both the original and the bfg edition where you have a flashlight attached on the armour. It is easier to fight in the bfg edition because of that but never bothered me, the original was a little bit scary yeah but after you beat the original, you should go for another round on the bfg and also the expansions.
1:28 You forgot about Quake Live witch cane out in 2010.
I honestly didn't know it was a remake.
John Carmack Is god of games for me. He made both of my fav Gaming franchises that is Wolfenstien and Doom🙌
Those were designed by John Romero. Carmack only did the engine and technical work.
Doom 3 was my first game
I don't know why he calls it a railgun. Its called a chaingun also known as a gatling gun or minigun. :P
not many people know ==the rage== is on not finished engine of [*] doom 4 [*] , this is only one game who we can feel how doom 4 was supposed to look like..
The game becomes repetitive towards the end, yes but it's a good game in general. I loved it. completed it on veteran difficulty too.
Hey man could you show the quotes a little longer just kinda hard to read them, otherwise love your videos brother I've watched a lot of them always entertaining
Then pause the video you lazy fuck, this is common knowledge amongst.... Everyone? Come on catch up xoxo
@@warmage247 Man stfu you goofy ass its pretty common knowledge i dont wanna pause the video multiple times because there is more than a few quotes, fucks up the flow but xoxo
@@Samkilla99 give a man a fish and he'll go hungry, teach a man to fish and he'll act like the pathetic troglodyte 12 year old they are and spit at you for having a brain while they barely have two pieces of gray matter to rub together.

@@warmage247 You are what is wrong with humanity. Off yourself.
Honestly, it's actually exactly what every video maker should do. While i read the quote i can't listen to what he's talking about, so better show the quote a short time and i can pause the video than keep on talking and losing me for a good 20 sec.
I love Doom 3, think it's way better then people give it credit for..
I bought this and Rage game for the 360 - still played them: on my pile of shame 😳.
*still not*
I know it’s suppose to be a horror game but I hated how dark the game was couldn’t see shit the whole time
I was really hyped for doom 4 and it lived up to a lot of my expectations, but i never found the atmosphere being quite as it was in doom 3.
Totally agree. Doom 2016+Eternal forces you to play the way they have designed the game to be played. In the previous games you have more freedom of choice. As said 100 times, less is more.
@@Melzasx rejection of progress eh
@@NobleRaider2747 hehehe maybe, but I'm not just a hater, there are good things in doom 2016&Eternal, but there are others that I quite dislike because are against of what I consider is the core of any game called "doom".
