In the 1920s, the KKK in Gainesville, Florida, stormed the local Catholic Church, beating and castrating the priest, simply because they feared that more people would convert to Catholicism. Who were the KKK members who committed this evil crime? The town mayor and the town police chief.

And have you read the history of the Roman Catholic Church? It's full of violence and persecution of many Jews, and Protestants. And today, the Vatican is behind many global wars and conflicts.
And let's not forget that Protestantism is a byproduct of the evil of the Roman Catholic Church. One that saw the corruption of Roman Catholicism...became a Protestor or Protested against the RCC.
The KKK, as ridiculous as it was and may still be, brought the chickens home to roost for the RCC.

My grandfather as a boy was terrified of the Ku Klux Klan they would ride through the town and the horses always terrified him. One day he was with his grandma working in the basement and looked at a chest and tried opening it. She hit his hand away and said to never look in that chest,. regardless he waited a bit until the evening and opened the chest and found his Grandad's Santa outfit and his Red Grand wizard Ku Klux Klan outfit.
He says that they were int he best of relations with the only black family in the town and they were well accepted. The only instance of violence he mentioned was that a drunk once beat his wife to a pulp and she was crying and when the Klan found out they got going came to is house, beat him and said if he did it again they'd hang him from a tree. The beatings stopped.
I'm not trying to justify the Klan but for a lot of people it was probably just a boys club where they could pretend to be western heroes.

I've lived in Alabama my entire life. Trust me when I say there are still lots of old folks who speak glowingly of the Klan. The only catch is they will tell you they don't have any negative accounts of the KKK brutalizing people. (I don't believe them; I'm pretty sure they're just playing dumb). No matter, they'll only talk about the money the Klan would raise to rebuild churches and city halls, or how they acted as the town's volunteer fire depts in the more remote reaches of the state where little infrastructure existed, and last but certainly not least- the unmatched protection they'd provide for bootleggers by blocking the dirt roads and forest paths that led to their stills! Apparently the KKK did a first rate job of stimying Revenue Agents back in the day...

Interestingly the civil war was largely fought by men who were forced to do so via conscription. The rich could buy their way out while the poor were forced to fight one of the most brutal wars ever fought where the emergence of modern weaponry really began to take hold while tactics remained similar to those of the revolutionary war. Both sides used conscription to form and maintain their armies.
As such you could say the war was fought by slaves. I think that's interesting and am glad that the United States no longer relies on conscription to form an army. At least the Union Army had a just cause. The vast majority of southern soldiers didn't own slaves or even land. They were forced to fight for an unjust cause and died in defense of tyranny.

This historian comes super close to addressing the political ideology of the Klan and its pervasive motivating force for why they did what they did and they targeted those they did.... .... .... but unfortunately he doesn't mention it. I have the sense that his bias and seemingly low opinion of conservative or traditional individuals prevented him from presenting this with fidelity. The nail in the coffin is the thousands of insurrectionist silliness that is posited in his own voice as if this is his own formulated expert opinion. About 25 minutes of research will hopefully insert a bit of wiggle room of doubt into the certainty of his position on this matter. I'm half black and half white, gree ul om a farm in the midwest, I was one of four non white people at any given time throughout middle and high school, eventually while stationed in Mississippi i had the opportunity to hear their side of the story. I took a chance and was totally honest with them (being half black and one of the first military men to be gay married) and they respected the fact that I approached them to listen. Not to debate or argue. They did treat me differently but they didn't treat me with disrespect whatsoever. (words arent violence). They shared some pretty tasty whiskey and they shared their opinions and their story and perspectives. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I disagree with so much with them, but at least in this anecdote, I had no problem connecting to the human and as an American. All of this to say is that I'm disappointed he mentioned nothing about the Democratic Party while describing the history of the Klan. To me, he's either too tribal/partisan for my consideration of any credibility or he truly missed a foundational aspect of this group's identity. The history of the klan cannot be separated from the fierce loyalty to the democratic party. Black Republicans being in many seats of power and leadership in the south during those times was a big factor of Klan focusing on blacks voting and the more right leaning Catholics etc.....

@@omarahmad4594 , because saying those trespassers who took who came into the the Capital on January 6 we're going to take over the country, makes about as much sense as saying the antifa who broke in to the federal courthouse in Portland were going to take over the US court system for that district. It was an illegal protest, and a trespassing that was labeled as an insurrection by the Democrats for political purposes.
