James DePreist, Music Director for the Oregon Symphony from 1980-2003, was one of the first internationally renowned African American conductors. He famously pioneered 15 groundbreaking recordings with the orchestra, earning notable acclaim and elevating the Oregon Symphony’s reputation, both nationally and internationally. All Classical Radio is honored to memorialize this artistic leader with a state-of-the-art recording studio. This long overdue monument celebrating DePreist's achievements will help foster a more complete understanding of the Black artistic pioneers that continue to shape arts and humanities in Oregon.
