I sat next to Dave on a flight from Seattle to LA once. It was my first time flying alone, I was probably 12 or 13, and I was very nervous. At this point I had no clue who the Foo Fighters or Nirvana were, so I literally had no clue who he was. He could tell I was super uneasy, so he talked to me and was super reassuring, asking me my name and introducing himself, just generally being a really friendly guy. He talked about how he played music, but never mentioned the bands, and never really played up how famous he was. He helped me get my carryon out of the luggage compartment and told me to have a fun time as I was going to disneyland with my uncle who lived in irvine, and that was it. I saw a couple people ask him for a picture when we got off the plane, but I never realized who he was until a year or so later when I mentioned a "Dave" who played music and took some pictures with people to some friends who asked me if it was him, and it just blew my mind. Really, really genuine guy, and an experience I'll never forget.
Beautiful, thank you so much sharing. What a special moment in time!
He is truly a wonderful human being. What a great memory, thanks for sharing!
This is amazing. Glad to see he is the kind of person I hoped he would be.
Pretty cool he was reassuring you because Dave loves to fly but is also afraid to fly.
@@FooCards88 He learned to fly too.
Dave is so good he plays the drums on a guitar.
yes
Such a wickedly accurate, honest statement from him!!
Not that it's important for the song, but James Hetfield (rhythm guitarist from Metallica) actually said the same. In a commercial for Yousician, he said: "I basically play drums on guitar."

I hope you find peace and his memory lives on brother.
It’s funny how we can take a song and it can mean something so different in our lives. The first time I heard this was on the hour long drive to Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital, after 3.5 years our daughter was having her final chemo. “Could anything ever be this good again” … hubby and I smiled while our daughter and our son (10 months younger than our girl) sang the Do do do's in the backseat. It was our victory song! That same little girl is a beautiful and brilliant 31 year old who's getting married in October (to a drummer 🤷🏼♀️😂), we'll have a family dance to “our song… Everlong 😊 thanks Dave ❤️!
How was the wedding day?

Wow! I gotta admit guys, I never thought my comment would get this kind of response. I’m just happy to know everybody is such a fan. Here’s to many more years of Foo!
Makes me feel better as a musically illiterate guitarist of 20+ years lol.
It usually takes fresh ears to come up with something very original. Trained musicians tend to stick to the classic chords they were taught. Dave basically created his own because he had no "rules" to follow.

"Watch him as he goes"
As a self trained guitarist the chords are: sounds good, sounds good, and sounds good.
As someone currently self training (Still terrible I may add) I appreciate this. Its exactly my thought process when just playing each chord to this song. Plays 1 chord "sounds good" the next "sounds good" and the rest "sounds good." Okay, now with the strumming pattern...."sounds nothing like everlong" RIP

Went to a mental institution for like a month when I was 15. I’d spend all my time in the main room hovering over the little radio they had. I wouldn’t let anyone change the station 103.9. “Im not a trained musician” says the legend who played drums and lead/guitar for two of the most influential bands of the 90s and 00s. Dave kills it
Dave is just fucking around and finding out.
Passion will always overcome adversity. Not to in any way minimize legit adversity, but more to say hang on to your passion. Formal training, proper connections, ideal physick, or whatever looks like it's holding you back, don't let it. Magic comes from so many unexpected places.
@@haggleboggle most rock musicians I play with never had formal lessons either. Same for me. I had a guy show me a couple chords and just took over from there. Same with drums. I was shown how to ride the high hat while alternating bass and snare and the rest is just practice and discovery. My first entire band was like that. We figured out what we were doing as we went. It goes really fast too. You improve so fast as long as you put in the practice. It’s probably way more fun that way actually.

words cannot describe how much I love this song
I walked down the aisle to this song on Halloween 2020. My husband knew this was my favorite song, so he learned to play it on the guitar in one night and surprised me with a "concert" when I got home from work one night. Tomorrow, I have to make his funeral arrangements.I've been putting off listening to this particular song since he was put on hospice two weeks ago. It was painful but cathartic. I'm glad I decided to watch this particular video instead of the original video❤
Fuck cancer
I'm sorry for your loss. What a great guy to learn and play that for you! I hope listening to Everlong again (and you must), brings out the sweet memories of him after the tears fade.
I’m so sorry. 💔
Damn girl, I am so sorry!
Music has a way of helping us transcend the crap hand life gives us sometimes. The Foo Fighters (and Everlong) in particular is an incredible song and your husband loved you so much that he learned to play it for you. What an amazing gift. I too suffered a horrible loss to the love of my life - my high school sweetheart - my husband - the father of our 2 beautiful daughters - my best friend…to an illness. Time will pass and you might find that it hurts a little less, but this song will anchor you to him forever and your feelings will eventually become more melancholy than sad. It’s been nearly 6 years since our loss and I can finally listen to Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley’s version) without breaking down into a puddle of tears and find that feeling that bonded us to that song with a smile in my heart.
I’m so sorry for your loss. And you’re right…Fv

this might actually be the best song ever, in the history of humankind
“I’m not a trained musician” means “everything I do is just because of raw talent and inspiration.”
It’s really inspiring. I mean most of the greats aren’t trained musicians, just people who were inspired and picked up a guitar.
He is trained, just not in the traditional sense of going to a school and being taught music theory. At the end of the day though, every great musician and composer uses the same things: their ears and their heart
Sometimes being trained makes you just think like everyone else.
Gotta respect his honesty. That really means that his songs have somethig special. I've been trying for so long to learn reading music, believing that i would be somehow better. Now, this video, almost gives me an excuse to skip learning intervals, modes, arpeggios. Even though I enjoy watching Adam Neely and Rick Beato explaining what appears to be rocket science :) anyone agrees?

i discovered the foo fighters when I was in sixth grade. My brother listened to their greatest hits album on repeat when he drove me to school and we jammed out to that music. I grew up with them, I distinctly remember listening to Sonic Highways before my eighth grade football games, and Concrete and Gold before my HS football games. I take them with me everywhere. I'm almost done with college now, stressed out of my mind and overwhelmed on all four corners. This music takes me back to simpler times.
i started playing drums when i was seven or so, i don’t play any other instrument. when dave explained how he perceives the lower strings as drums and the higher strings as cymbals, i realized that i would think of it the same way. i’m simply used to drum grooves and if i knew a few chords on the guitar, i’d probably played them like drum grooves. i think that’s why i feel oddly special especially about this song. damn, this man and his music is so inspiring

It’s so beautiful watching him get emotional over his own song. It’s like the same kind of passion we as fans feel about it.
It’s unbelievable, he’s a fantastic guitarist, one of the best drummers to ever touch this Earth no matter what anyone says, and his singing is like an angel’s. He’s my hero.
Yeah, and it seems to be so rare to get to watch this kind of videos. I love when the artists are passionate about their stuff
DONG!!!
Love this version ...
best line!
This song totally was my jam many years ago. I went through a short period of drug abuse in 2019. Went to rehab just before covid in 2020, and came back to this song very recently. I have a friend who also was using back then. Just got back ahold of him and it seemed he was clean too. Just actually this moment found out hes not. I was so happy to remember him as a clean funny guy who i always had a lil crush on, but we stayed friends for so long. Im heartbroken. Listening to this makes it better.
I really appreciate how Dave speaks about the process of writing a song.
Agreed 100%
Late to this but listen to him narrate his autobiography if you haven’t - whole book is just like this
“I’m not a trained musician....however I am an absolute god.”
11:13
Absolutely! Lol
He’s not a trained musician, so true. You cant train what he has.

Some of the best songs came about from a broken heart. 💔 Thank you Dave for sharing!
Story time. Many years ago I had my first love. And I loved her with my whole heart. We dated for 2 1/2 years, and then she left me for another guy. It broke me so bad that I dropped out of college, left my job, burrowed head long into hard drugs, and eventually ended up homeless. I went to a rehab for nine months in St. Louis and recovered much of myself. At that rehab I met my current girlfriend, and I got an apartment up in St. Louis. It was there that one day I asked my girlfriend to come into my room and lay on my bed with me because I had found this song, and it meant a lot to me concerning my past with my ex. We laid there, and as the song played, I found myself breaking down and dripping with lots of tears. When the song ended, she looked over at me and said, “Ohmygod baby! Are you alright?” “Yes.” I choked out. “I really didn’t think it was going to hit me like that.” I had so much more to get out about what went down between me and her, and I knew that, but I didn’t think it was going to come out then. To everyone still hurting or still in love years after a past relationship, just know that I get it. It’s the deepest pain that I know. But we have to keep expelling it in whatever ways we know. Keep pushing to cope. “Being missed so dearly is the price of being loved so much.” “In the end. The only thing that matters. Is how much you loved.” “You were with them, and they were with you, and that’s what matters.” I’m finally about to send her a letter as a means of attempting greater closure. It has everything I wish I would have told her in it. Wish my heart the best please, and thank you for reading.
Dave Grohl bingo. “I’m not a guitarist”
“I treat the guitar like a drum” “I can’t read music” He hit all the spots here!
That's what she said.
@@JessMichaelWillyard doesn’t even make sense but alright

Rad. He's an amazing guy.
@Dustin Hill I know what he’s trying to say about hitting all the right spots but the remainder of the comment doesn’t make sense
The acoustic version of Everlong literally saved my life and carried me through a very rough time. I will be forever grateful, thank you.
Be strong bud !
I'm right there with you pal. It gave me the "one more day" I needed to be where I'm at 2 years later. Hope you're still hanging in there.
"literally"
You all hang in there. I'm also a self taught guitar player and i don't know shit about theory but music transcends everything
It did for me many times
Dave, this is my song with my Rob!! We met 19 years ago and then reconnected. And well this song is sooooo us!!! We both feel like we are each others everlong!!!! He bought me for Christmas the a picture of this song!!! We love you so much!! And this is US!!! It’s so much love and how we feel about us after 19 yrs and now we are together again. And engaged and so in love!!! One night I wrote the lyrics to him when he was several states away. And ok so yeah this is us and how we feel!! Thank you!! Cause this feels forever!!! ❤❤❤
One of my top 10 favorites. Love, love, love this rip.
That song without a doubt is one of the best songs ever written. I absolutely love both versions.

It's most definitely on of the best songs written in the 90's, one that immediately brings me back to one of the best decades in my life. As many times as I've listened to this song, mostly here on RUclips, I've never seen this video. I love the story behind one of my all time favorite songs. Also the original HD video is the first one that featured Taylor Hawkins in the Foo Fighters even though through another video Dave Grohl explains that he actually recorded the drum track for it. Yes, what a great song that showcases the talents of one of the best rock bands from the 90's.

This band accompanied me when I was studying in high school, when i received my diploma, when I went out with friends, when I became a boyfriend for the first time seriously, when we started living together, when she left me and we sold the house, when I talked to my mother long and hard until dawn, when I met the woman of my life, when my parents died, and today with more years, more experience I listen to their songs and sometimes I cry recounting what I experienced, this band is my soul, my life, thanks Dave
Stay strong king
Well said.
Fair winds and following seas.
Wow man. Thank you for sharing.
Im so glad this guy and his band are still rockin it in 2024, much love to Taylor never forget you, Foo Fighters for life 🇦🇺
It’s so easy to sit for hours watching Dave play and talk whil losing your sense of time, congrats to him.
"If everything could ever feel this real forever. If anything could ever be this good again" those lyrics right there hits me hard
Yes me also. And sadly I don't think it will ever be very real for me anymore. It's more like going through the motions until it's over with.
Love those lines

This is why I love Dave Grohl. For him its all about the music and not the bullshit. He's genuine. Unfortunately musicians like him are getting harder to come by. Love the Foo
Same here a true troubadour !
I’m not a huge foo fighters fan but Dave grohls lovability is undeniable
Nah those musicians are still out there they're just not being promoted
There are even more Grohl type musicians today than in the past.
The mainstream music industry ignores them.
Look around - you will find them
Going to a Foo concert is high on my bucket list.
When I first heard this song I was going through a breakup and the chords, lyrics, and passion in Dave’s voice shook me to my core in a beautiful melancholy way. There is simply not a more meaningful and perfectly made song than everlong.
Dave we love you. This is the best song ever and is t he only thing in the world that I can say that this is 100% true without thinking about it.
RIP Taylor Hawkins 😔 so saddened, sorry for everyone's loss he will be truly missed 💝 Taylor such an outstanding drummer and singer!! Gosh, Dave and band mates must be devastated, my heart goes out to everyone.

"I can't read music"
Becomes one of the legends in the history of music
That's a bit of a stretch lol
Lot of musicians can't read music, hendrix, Eddie van halen, angus young
@@gregstuber8956 Michael Jackson is also in that club. He would beatbox his ideas to tape then layer them together and add the voice to have something for the session musicians to copy. They are still checking all his tapes to see what can be released.
Jeff Lynn....
Nor could any of the Beatles.
The chances of anyone from Foo Fighters actually seeing this comments are slim to none but I wanted to write it anyway. My mom passed away about five years ago at this point and Foo Fighters were her favorite band in the world and this was her favorite song in the world, hearing the story and hearing this rendition of the song brought me completely to tears and made me feel so incredibly close to her and maybe wish I could just share this video with her too, thank you

Love this style of performance. Everything's broken down and explained. Performance was awesome as well. Kind of like an MTV stripped but simplified.

This is one of the things I love about Dave. He’s not a “trained” musician, he just plays things that sound cool to him. Literally plays how he’s feeling in the moment.
It's awesome for sure how real he is
its his drumming background carrying over to guitar
