Penny never really reached his peak/prime as injuries definitely got the best of him. In spite of this, he was a top tier guy right away. He was a dominant and winning player before he ever got to reach his full stride. Would love to see a video about Derrick Coleman too. He was a top tier power forward who consistently won 50+ games with the Nets. There is a guy who gets NO love.
100%. 1990s were robbed of amazing potential perennial all-stars because of injuries: Grant Hill, Penny, Derrick Coleman, Larry Johnson, Antonio Mcdyess, Jamal Mashburn, Terrell Brandon, Tom Gugliotta. So much amazing talent.
That magic team was so exciting to watch as a kid. Been in NY my whole life but they used to play all the Magic games on TNT. Because I idolized Shaq as a kid I watched every game and wasn’t a Knicks fan until much later.
Penny was amazing,he perform on a high level. To me yes injuries played a role, but people overlook how bad the medical staff's were back then. And how they diagnosed certain injuries cost many players carriers, but of course it wasn't intentional. Today Penny recovers 100% from that injury👍
Yeah, medical staffs were learning how to deal with injuries and the bad shoes/equipment, and ofcourse they'd let players play while injured. Tore ACL meant your career is over. Remember Steph being injury prone early in career then he changed sneakers and had a great medical staff. In the 90s he'd be a shell of his self.
Well said,Hoss.Reminds me when i was in the army,if you got hurt, people inthe unit would have you doing things against a doctors orders, some of these guys were real &&&holes. They'd call you-BROKE-DICK and try to put pressure on soldiers to go against their doctor's orders for easy work assignments. One of the many reasons I left the army.
Penny Hardaway! The legend! I remember that many times, I'd rock my Penny Hardaway jersey (I had the black one) and hoop it up! Penny is my favorite pg of the 90s! If it wasn't for his injuries, we'd be talking about one of the GOATS, and EASILY a first-ballot HOFer! Together, with Grant Hill, they're the biggest "what ifs" of the 90s, but at least Grant Hill bounced back at all star level! But, anyways, I had a wonderful adolescence, and Penny was a part of it! Dear Penny, if you're reading this, thanks for the memories, and God bless you!
PENNY is a LEGEND. One of the all time greats despite his career ending injuries. He really was something special. The truth. One of the greatest and talented players ever! My all time favorite player hands down! #1
I REALLY liked Penny back in his early years. He was supposed to be the next Magic. What lead him to myself was Shaq. I loved Shaq. Even rocked a LSU hat back in my middle school years & was PISSED when he didn't make the Dream Team. ... Anyhow, Penny was smooth. So natural with his movement with the ball. Calm looking, yet nasty as hell. We got ROBBED as basketball fans, & I'm saying before the injuries. Shaq leaving that team just didn't feel right & changed a lot of things. Changed the way I viewed Shaq & even the NBA as a whole. It didn't feel right or settle well. It's hard to articulate exactly what I mean by that. ... League lost a little of its innocence in a way. It's overall shine or character. ... That's the best I got on it right now. ... Bet a lot of people who watched the NBA back then & within my age range would know what I mean (was born in 1978). - Thanks for another fine upload my man 🙏👍😃. ... Be well & best wishes

Penny, Grant Hill How injury can end it all. Shaq and Penny managed to shine 2gether double Alpha mode. Shaq and Kobe struggled over being the "one" at first.
That magic team with penny and Shaq were so much fun to watch. Penny’s was the first basketball Jersey other than John Starks and Jordan that I ever wanted.
On any other team, Penny would have been 'The Man', but he didn't linger in Shaq's shadow, he danced through it and put himself on display by dominating his opponent nightly. He was just getting started when injuries began their attack on his potential legacy. He was a joy to watch at his peak and will always be top 5 to me.
Penny's unfortunate string of injuries robbed us of some good basketball and hits different for me being a Memphis native. You know you're legit when MJ wears your shoe during a game.

I'm sure he has plenty of regrets, but becoming a well liked player with a deep bag and among the most athletic people on the planet (nba all-stars) is not one of them.
Teaming up with one of the league histories biggest freaks and getting to finals with such an inexperienced roster..within first few years?
I really doubt it was a "waste of time".
Just didn't work out, that's all.
There was other teams with Shaq hacks and deep talent.
Penny never get his flowers man love Penny bro foreal........
As a Bulls fan, I admired Penny. He was special from day one. Dynamic, spectacular player
Me too. I was a huge Penny Hardaway fan he was so exciting to watch
SAME
@ least you know more than MICHAEL JORDAN 😎 Just saying because he was the mayor of chi town for sure👍🏿
Penny was wickedly sick on the floor. He had size, ball handle, floor vision, speed, power, good shooter, great defender, and a very high basketball IQ, and a natural leader on the floor with great rapport with his team mates. Very few players can be said to have... "THE TOTAL PACKAGE", Penny did! His career and full potential was not achieved because Knee and other injuries start setting in right at his Prime, but the guys tallent in his youth on the front side of his playing days had already taken him and his team to the NBA Finals and laid down markers that this guy is the real deal. Forget about your A game, better bring you AAA Game when you are going up against Penny. Dude was so good, he had his own shoe and commercials... remember Chris Rock... Penny, Penny!
Thank you my guy. It's always a prideful feeling for me when I hear ppl bring up Penny's name as a guy who's watched him since high school. He was the 1st Memphis high school player to get his games on TV locally. I'm ah proud Memphian 👏
Penny + a young Shaq was absolutely LETHAL! Ppl forget how fast and athletic Shaq was in his early years.
Loved this video. I liked Penny back in the day, but really forgot how cold he was.
Yeah Shaq was a lot more athletic and agile while he was with Orlando. Maybe all of that arguing with Kobe stressed him out.
Penny, McGrady, Rose and uniform number 1 have an image of many players who cried due to injuries
Don't forget Zion hopefully he comes back strong
Also Grant Hill
TmAc was better than all of them don’t @ me
Penny Hardaway is one of my favorite players of all time !
They finally giving Penny his flowers and respect Memphis 10 legend
I witnessed Penny at Memphis versus DePaul here in Chicago at a live game back in the day. He was a one man scoring machine and I think he got 43 pts. He was a human cheat code.
Don't forget that MJ wore Penny's shoes and MJ respected that dude.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Facts
I never knew that
Please get a picture of that for me
Talk to them, in Chicago if I remember correctly 🤔
never knew penny was tmac favorite player crazy how both of their games were similar and their stories are similar because of injury. salute to them both
Penny never really reached his peak/prime as injuries definitely got the best of him.
Another 1 of those What-Ifs. Dude hadn't scratched the surface yet
Penny had the intangibilities as well. He's a coach and leader now.
That’s was my favorite Player too
Penny was the Man Brother! In the words of little Penny "The Secret Service couldn't guard Me" That's Penny Hardaway.
That magic team was so exciting to watch as a kid. Been in NY my whole life but they used to play all the Magic games on TNT. Because I idolized Shaq as a kid I watched every game and wasn’t a Knicks fan until much later.
One of the best basketball players ever. Minus Chips, accolades, etc. If we are talking pure game and skill, Penny is it. Facts
Injuries matter. When you vote for the best, you have to skip the stats, and go by dominance. HE DOMINATED.
Until the 95/96 ECF. Jordan put an end to that shit.
Penny was amazing,he perform on a high level. To me yes injuries played a role, but people overlook how bad the medical staff's were back then. And how they diagnosed certain injuries cost many players carriers, but of course it wasn't intentional. Today Penny recovers 100% from that injury👍
They would’ve let him rest in todays game
I would veen say Tracy Mcgrady is a bigger what if over Grant HIll
@@mpix00 probably! So is his teammate Yao Ming! Derrick Rose is another big what if, and so is Brandon Roy!
There can't be more than one GOAT. The word greaTEST can only mean one. He can be one of the greats, but only ONE player can be the GOAT.
I tell everybody I stop watching basketball after Shaq left the magic grew up in Florida and was a huge penny fan ( born in 84) I understand when you say it didn’t feel right
🔥🔥🔥🔥Great Great Great “GIVING DA’ 🌹 ROSES 🌹 VIDEO” Of Penny Hardaway. Penny Was A Great And Very Talented NBA Player. I Really Wish More RUclipsrs React To Penny Hardaway. He Deserves The Attention And His ROSES 🌹. Again, Great Video Bruh👍🏾💯👍🏾
I loved watching Penny him and Shaq were unstoppable.
Penny is worth the price of admission. Period. Point blank. One of my all time favorite player. 🏀
Great video! If Penny never got hurt he would have been a top 10-12 player of all time easy! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Grant hill and Greg oden as well.
Still my favorite player of ALL TIME. I try to tell the younger generation how special this dude was. That pass to Horace, on Pippen and Jordan. 3:09....SPECIAL!!!
Yeah,Penny was a BEAST !!! Shaq decided to leave when he didn't get the money from the Magic that he wanted, even his own grandmother called him out on his greed. He could've stayed in Orlando, but,he was upset that Jon Kontak had a better pay check than him.
Penny, Grant Hill
How injury can end it all.
They should’ve stayed the course & start winning championships in MAGIC LAND
I think Bias and Penny are two of the greatest "what ifs" in basketball
I believe Dražen Petrović fans probably would like to have a word about the greatest "what if's"
Def agree with Bias, Wow what a loss for the Celtics at the time. I would have liked to see Walton with out injuries also.
Penny definitely was an amazing player! Huge fan back then!
Me too.
So much so that Shaq got jealous.
Fax! But Shaq would’ve dominated inside while Penny would’ve did something dirty to the Kobe’s @ that time✌️
Penny wouldve been top twenty all-time if he never got injured. He was absolutely the most fun player to watch growing up in the 90s.
he was INCREDIBLE ,loved watching him play
just so many skills
Penny's unfortunate string of injuries robbed us of some good basketball and hits different for me being a Memphis native. You know you're legit when MJ wears your shoe during a game.
Jordan and co. swept his ass in the ECF, though lol.
Penny was good and he deserves respect I was a fan of him back in the 90s
Man Penny was my 2nd Fav after Jordan, I collected over 50 of his Rookie Cards, shame he didn’t make the HOF due to injuries
It feels amazing to be from Memphis, born and raised of course and to have the pleasure to watch Penny Hardaway from College to the Pros
Penny certainly better at making his teammates better, but Penny never reached Kobe’s scoring mentality because they just have different mindset.
fav jersey of all time
Great great player! He deserves to be in the hof
Penny was my favorite man, my dad even took me to Orlando when I was a kid to see him. Most kids go to Disney 😂
Penny is the real deal. Unfortunately, injuries had sidelined his career, like Shaq said, he was Kobe before Kobe.
Penny hardaway was a great skill player But he could not be like kobe bryant 🤷 in the end don't compreher penny too the greatest skill basketball player ever kobe bryant was drafted from HS to Pro NBA unlike penny hardaway in that itself says alot and also kobe bryant didn't get the chance too play alot of minutes in those frist 2 yrs as a rookie because of the Lakers coach for not letting him but kobe bryant was already kobe bean bryant and shaq went too kobe bryant too win a nba title not the other way around and they did won 2000 nba finals kobe bryant was just 21 and then 2 more after that then did another 3 peat without shaq and won 2 back to back facts
@@Aldine281 kobe was trash compared to penny penny stats prove it especially his fg%
Boi sthu nobody in history was Kobe except Kobe 🤡
@@Aldine281 are dumb ? Penny is better than Kobe an only people I can think of being better than him is mj or bron
@@Kobe8DaGreat24Exactly
Could not agree more with your closing statement.👍🏽
He was an awesome player. It is a shame we never got to see his full potential.😔
Beyond being a great Player / Athlete, I think Penny was a great person, I truly hope Penny have taken the retirement to positive place, for me it was extremely sad for him
Penny is from the projects in Memphis...always respected how much he cares about his community. I think it's a big reason why he coaches at Memphis now.
@@chrish7983 Penny completed his degree in education so he could coach middle school basketball here in Memphis before he was offered the head coach job at UofM. He's definitely active in the community here.
Penny will always be a 90's favorite to this day!!!!
In the 1990s when Penny emerged at Orlando he was the only player in that decade who I thought could challenge MJ, or maybe be even better. Brilliant player but short lived career. Talent wise off the charts.
My favorite player 🐐
Penny, Grant Hill, and Brandon Royl; three of the coldest cats to lace em' up. Stunted growth due to injuries.
Injuries was the thing that hurt Penny’s career. He was a great player and one of my favorite too.
Penny is who I create my my player after 6’7 point guard can pass, shoot, dunk and play defense!😂
If that player has a durability rating make sure to put it at 55. Because the best ability is availability.
@@ovathere93 make sure to also put a medical staff at 55,cause all players suffer from injuries. Some just have the luxury to be properly taking care for and be giving the time to fully recover👍 Back then the game was tougher and every player 💪 in today's game Penny dominates easy.
@@nelp.950 Agreed. Penny and Grant Hill would've been LeBron before LeBron. But we could play the "what if" game with alot of guys. Personally, I think the most important part of A Hall of Fame career is durability.
Thanks for sharing brother!!! Penny is and will always be my GOAT!
Penny Hardaway is definitely up there in terms of all time greats. I still have his jersey somewhere. A Real icon!
Penny and Grant Hill, two great players affected by injury
Derrick Rose
An injury free Penny Hardaway would dominate today's NBA so easy. His basketball IQ, speed, shooting ability and infinite passing arsenal are unmatched until this day
thank you for uploading this my all favorite really all time great Penny Hardaway. #1 for life.
Penny would have been a top 5 player of all-time if not for the injuries. However, Kobe's greatest attribute is rising to the level of his competitors. Kobe's relentlessness and work ethic is what makes him great. Kobe had the ability to elevate an average team into a championship team. I would of loved to see Kobe and Penny play against each other more.
90's Basketball was the best!🏀🏆👍
Prime Penny was Magic Johnson with a jump shot. What an immense talent.
That is down right scary
I thought Penny was much BETTER than Magic,Penny had an actual jump shot,Magic had a set-shot,Penny was a much better defensive player,Magic was WEAK.Penny could jump out the gym, block shots.
@@powerbadpowerbad magic was an exponentially better passer leader rebounder and clutch performer than Penny...Penny had a jump shot was far more athleticism was a better defender and might have been one of the best PGs ever if hed stayed healthy, but stop embellishing...Magic is the best PG EVER...He didnt have a jumper, but he did have an arsenal of hook shots as well as the teardrop which Penny lacked. Magic despite Reggies faulty claims was also better in the low post...Kareem retired and Magic still won a league MVP and got LA back into the finals without him...What happened to Penny after Shaq left Orlando?
I loved Penny Hardaway I was very fond of that team with Shaq&Penny but Magic&Larry changed and saved the sport and dominated in a way very few ever have, and the only player Ive ever seen who Id put ahead of them in terms of greatness is Michael Jordan. Penny was a very good passer but he didnt ever have the kind of impact upon his teammates that Magic&Bird had...The only player Ive seen who had that kind of impact on his teammates was a healthy Bill Walton.
Penny best no matter what.
Its crazy how mcgrady was influenced by penny and spoke on how penny career was hindered by injuries and the same thing can be said about mcgrady. Both would be all time greats if not for injuries
Penny came in like that! So true. Wrecked the whole league right away. Salute to 1.
This is no disrespect to Penny, but Shaq's comment that it took Kobe 2-3 seasons to figure it out, whereas Penny already had it as a rookie is extremely misleading!
Kobe came into the league straight out of high school. Whereas when Penny left high school, he played 3 seasons in college before going to the NBA. You do the math.
You can do the math but shaq played with both. Have you played with any of the two? 🤷♂️ penny is up there if it wasnt for injuries. Similar to grant hill. Must be these young dudes never saw penny and grant played at their peak. Before lequeen there was grant hill. Before curry, there these guy called chris jackson or mahmoud abdul rauf. Know ya shizz mate.
@@PhiyackYuh What you're saying has absolutely nothing to do with the point I'm making. Smh
@@ATLienForLifeexactly. How can penny be better then Kobe when Kobe plays both sides of the ball. Kobe could shoot over anyone. Penny was more of drive and dunk kind of player and a great passer.
@@Jeazzy24 lol penny was a better defender then kobe
So so underrated due to injury.
Penny was a lock for the HOF until injured.
8:58 I was in the Orena and saw this play happen live. I was a kid and it’s still one of the most memorable plays that I’d ever seen. For some reason I have a hard time finding it on different Penny videos, I’m glad you included it. He was just fucking amazing to watch.
I want to spend time in the universe where penny did not have injuries
And Hill
This is a factor that doesn't get taken into account, but does factor into a fan's opinion: Cool Factor.
This is why Jordan will always be the GOAT to a lot of people. Jordan is Top 3, if not #1, Coolest Men to ever live. The next coolest dude in the NBA in the 90s was Penny. If you lived through Penny you know who he was.
