I realize why this is my favorite guitar play along channel. You did a guitar review with a song. No interruptions, talking. I didn’t have to skip anything to get the point of the video. BRILLIANT
Yes, and I struggled a little with which Donner guitar to use. Their Tele style has a single coil in the bridge while their Strat has the humbucker. Ultimately I decided to compare a Strat style to a Strat guitar regardless of the difference in bridge pickups between each.
Nice comparison. One hears the differences more on the low strings. And when I think back to the dubious quality of the budget guitars back in the late 1970s... you could drive a bus under the action, the intonation was er, "different" beyond about the 7th fret, and the pickups went microphonic with any gain. Nice playing as always.
This song along with others such as Pipeline, Surf Rider is the reason I will not sell my Fender VG, even though the Jazzmaster is my favorite overall. Excellent video as always!
For some reason I thought the guitars were the other way around so when I heard the actual stray I thought it was the donner and was confused as to why it sounded better. Great playing!
This is such a legendary piece. I really enjoyed your breakdown of it. Did you use any spring reverb? I use a lot of it and a little overdrive to push the surf tone out a bit. ❤😊❤😊❤😊❤
How cool that they sent you a guitar! That shows they think your channel has some reach. Donner does look like a good brand for beginners. I wouldn’t buy one myself because the urge to upgrade every single component would be too strong. I did that with a Glarry a couple of years ago and learned my lesson…just buy Fender!
For a cheap beginner instrument, I have never seen anyone come closer to replicate the sound of the original recording than you have with the Donner strat. It sounds almost exactly like Dick Dale and that's big.
Geez Tom I been waiting for this one from you! This is another one the people LOVE live. I'm intimidated..this one is going to take some work,. Again I can't thank you enough! Bless you Tom. Thanks
Using two guitars with two different pickups..... one with Alnico magnets and the other with Ceramic magnets..... The differences can be understood very well.... Great cover!!!! :)
Closer than I thought. I could only tell the difference when you were on the 6th string at the start. THe high E sounded identical heard through a computer.
Here's the BIG problem with this comparison: He's playing in position 1 which is the humbucker on the Donner and a single coil on the Strat. It's a completely different pickup. I bet they would have sounded nearly identical in positions 3,4,5 where they were both in single coil positions.
I believe the difference between a cheap guitar isn’t the construction but also the player. A bad player can make a thousand dollar guitar sound like crap and a pro can make a 100 dollar guitar sound great. It’s all about the technique more than equipment in my mind, but of course without proper equipment any instrument will sound bad regardless of player skill.
A few things would help the Donner. Raise the pickup, run up the amp volume, maybe e.q. changes, strings and set up if you haven't done so. Just simple stuff a new player would do to play at home. I have a Donner, excellent for the price. I practice and record with it. And, yes, I have played, gigged and recorded for 54 years. Have a house full of expensive and inexpensive gear. With this demo, I guess the only thing a new player, or someone with funds can do is spend many hundreds more to be in the game, or just find another activity. I'm not thinking you did this purposely, but maybe should have thought about the demo a little more.
I’m not sure what you mean. A beginner could achieve good results with some practice, playing the Donner as it is right out of the box. I’m not suggesting the Donner guitar gets them “in the game” but simply that it is a good choice for beginners. Anyone serious enough to spend the time needed to make serious progress will likely also spend more more money on more expensive gear down the line. But the Donner is a good starting point.
@@tomcon21 Thanks Tom, well, the sound came out very weak as if the amp volume wasn't high enough. I assume a beginning player would adjust the sound to hear it. Anyway most will find it very satisfactory if they ask a knowledgable friend or a luthier to adjust for set up. They'll be many dollars ahead I didn't want to sound angry. It's just that I hear/see good sounding reviews on YT and mine is actually exceptional, but without enough verbalization here, it sounded like the guitar was being "trashed". Thanks, as always.
Please, can you tell me what's the scale of this music? I noticed that you play the notes E, F, G#, A, B, D# and E again (in the first part). I would say that you play the harmonic Am scale but that G# does't allow me to say that... In the second part you play the same notes but instead of D# you play the D (Am scale), but G# appears again and that makes no sense in theory... I would apreciate if you answer me. Besides, you play very well man, nice video.
I'm attempting this as my first song but my pick is getting caught on the string when I alternate pick back, would a softer pick help until I get better at it?
First song ever? Might not be a good choice if it’s your first song. As far as pick, I think heavy pics will work best. Probably just have to loosen your grip.

Thank you so much!
he changed the game with this one
The difference between a hambucker and a single coil is huge
Yes, and I struggled a little with which Donner guitar to use. Their Tele style has a single coil in the bridge while their Strat has the humbucker. Ultimately I decided to compare a Strat style to a Strat guitar regardless of the difference in bridge pickups between each.
Yes!!
That single coil pickup on the Fender sounds a lot more 'surf'.
Great tremolo picking Tom! Man, that Fender has got some presence.
You can't beat the Strat but the Donner absolutely rocks !!! 😎
Nice comparison. One hears the differences more on the low strings. I like the sound of the Fender better………despite the fact you made the red one sound better than anyone thought possible
Good job 👍
This song along with others such as Pipeline, Surf Rider is the reason I will not sell my Fender VG, even though the Jazzmaster is my favorite overall. Excellent video as always!
Great cover!
Awesome and thanks. The donner in my opinion is the guitar for the song.
Thanks so much Tom. Much appreciated.
Oh finally we can see your misirlou!!
I’m sure many people have been waiting long for this including myself😊 great!!
Thank you SO much for your uploads, Tom. I've been trying to learn surf forever and you're my go-to source. Love your channel.
“ Impeccable playing as always…you have a great knack for impersonating other guitarist, even Dick Dale who played the guitar upside down.”
soooo cool - finally a great tutorial n tabs - thanks so much - i love your work and im very happy to learn from you - awesome , grateful greetings
Your guitar playing, especially the rock n' roll and surf guitar is a real inspiration.
very nice play. Thanks for the good number.
Thanks again Tom. Love it.
Thanks for the lesson!! I enjoyed the shootout between Fender and Donner and clearly Fender wins 😊❤😊❤😊
👍🎸👏😊 Nice playing Yom.
For some reason I thought the guitars were the other way around so when I heard the actual stray I thought it was the donner and was confused as to why it sounded better. Great playing!

So cool ! Which effects did you use ? 🤩
Awesome Tom! Those Middle Eastern scales fit right into that classic surf sound, love all that stuff!! 👍👍
Well that's what Dick Dale was famous for ...
Amazing as always bro
Awesome bro!

That was a really great performance.

Muchas gracias por compartir tu trabajo
Masterfully played….thanks for sharing Tom…

I am curious as to what your setup was with the Donner guitar also.
I never get tired of that

Nice Tom Cheers.
Hey Tom: Thanks for this version! Definitely putting it in my Tom Conlon music binder!! Duane 🇨🇦
My right hand gets carpal tunnel just from watching
Máximo, una nueva para la colección. 😌👍
Using two guitars with two different pickups..... one with Alnico magnets and the other with Ceramic magnets..... The differences can be understood very well....
Great cover!!!!
:)
In a blind test, Dick Dale would think this is him playing
Awesome jam man, played with perfection
Personaly I prefered Fender, but Doner sounds ok too
J'adore puisque je l'interprète moi même mais ta manière est géniale
This is incredible :) Kudos and thanks Tom.
Amazing! I wanna be just like you when I grow up!
Really awesome 😎
Wow. You nailed it. A comparison and a tutorial in one. You can clearly hear the difference. fender has more presence and a fuller sound.
awesome
Fantastikkkkk Ok grazie Sempre fantastikkkkk unico speciale fantastikkkkk
Cool !😎

Impressive as always.
Very good 👍
Every time i play this song my wrist is on fire
Great! That Strat sounds awesome but for a beginner the Donner would not be bad
Sensacional! Parabéns! 🇧🇷
Apart from the great guitar playing that was a very interesting comparison with two guitars.
Es tuya esta versión surf del padrino? Hay backing track?
Finallyyyy
Nice😍😍😍😍
Awesome....❤️❤️❤️👍👍🔥🔥

Framed please for los lobos
hooooow do you get that tone
¡Buenísima! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The Donner doesn't really compare with the Strat. But I think the better point is that it comes down to the player.
No surprise Fender is the winner. So much brighter and bouncier than the dull Donner.
To my untrained ear they sound the same, the only differences being the superior finish of the Donner and the headstock labelling
Woaza!
contagiante demais essa musica !!!!
Super

Do you have this backing track
Not yet, soon
КАК развить быстроту движения правой руки с медиатором в ЭТОЙ композиции?? 😟
How does one make a song request?
Aged Tele fan says my old ears got more out of the Strat than the Donner.. Younger ears may differ and claim superior acuity if they wish

May I request Taco Wagon by Dick Dale?
You may

According to Google, it is called the double harmonic scale.
💣🎸👍👍👍👏👏👏
Fender!!!
Красава...
How do I tune my guiter to get this sound
It’s in standard tuning

@@tomcon21 okay, thank you. Any recommendations for a good starter song?
I would maybe get some open chords down with some songs like She’ll Ne Comin’ Round the Mountain. Or Love Me Do. Open chords- G, C, D, Em…
@@moctarjohnson8887 Another suggestion would be Link Wray's Rumble, combining chords and a descending pentatonic.
A Standard hangja fényesebb, csillogóbb. Nekem jobban tetszik 👍🙋
My favourite one❤️
Hi i search drum rhythm in the back please send my mail?

Donner seems to be a bit detuned.
