Surf sound is really hard to get right without specialized gear! I’ve been a metal/rock player for my whole life, the last 2-3 years I’ve been learning surf guitar, and it’s been a long journey. The techniques are completely different and the amp, tremolo, and reverb are key! But it’s renewed my passion for guitar playing! I encourage people to go out of their typical genres. Especially if they’re feeling uninspired!

If my memory is correct, although he was born in America, Dick Dale has a Lebanese background & the song was usually played an an Oud, which is an instrument with eleven strings. He heard Miserlou being played on one through a Lebanese connection, liked it & adapted it for guitar. The original version was popular with belly dancers. His version is popular with everyone :)

Brilliant! Thanks for doing this! About the scale: this is the exact scale that all of Indian classical music relies on. I'm from the south of India, where we refer to this as the Carnatic scale. I've been listening to Miserlou for years, and I never put two and two together, somehow -- thank you for breaking it down so well! This has been a revelation.

I’ve played this song on stage with Dick Dale. I was one of The Centurions’ sax players. Great job on the song and the explanation on how to play it. I just need to pass on one thing. It’s not “Tremolo Picking”. It’s “Double Picking”. At least that’s what all the “first wave surf bands” called. Just an FYI. Keep it up. You’re on it!

Imagine that one of your favorite three songs of all time is incredibly obscure. Would you wish you could keep it to (nearly) yourself, or would you prefer it eventually receives lots of exposure? I felt like I nearly had a heart attack when I heard it in 1994 on a TV ad for Pulp Fiction, since I'd never heard it on radio or TV. I knew it because my mother worked for a radio station in 1962 that gave her its rejected 45s. When I was a teen in 1982, I played her records and found it. I had it autographed by Dick Dale and hung it on my living room wall before that commercial. For years I played it only for special female guests.
