This is GOLD! I'm an intermediate guitarist who started out playing punk rock in part because I thought it was all I could handle, but my tastes went far beyond The Buzzcocks and Sex Pistols, which don't get me, is great stuff. But because of channels like yours, I now have the courage to play classic country, rockabilly, and now jazz! Sometimes I roll my eyes at the word, empowerment, but your lessons are truly empowering. Thank you!
One minute in and you nailed a key point about teaching/learning jazz (teaching and learning in general as well). There is something about the jazz types that love to over complicated things. This on the other hand. is very accessible and easy to digest.
Brilliant lesson, Adrian, and it’s great that you’re including jazz in and amongst the many great teachings you offer. Even if one doesn’t pursue jazz in and of itself, these chords and voicing are present in so many other genres and styles. It’s like taking a little time to learn another instrument besides guitar in that there is nothing but upside for us guitarists. Well done, Good Sir!🌟🙏🏽
Wow! Never have I seen such immediately productive jazz instruction AnyWhere! Beginner, Intermediate or Otherwise! The grip variations, the note background theory and the voicing. Good on you Mate!!
Great video, Adrian! Entry into Jazz would seem like an impossibility, judging by other videos on the subject. This is by far the best video for entry into Jazz and for the Jazz beginner. Further, being able to easily identify the intervals in each voicing makes that step into theory so much easier.
I really learned a lot from this! I always found it difficult to get started with jazz as there is so much to learn and it seemed daunting. This lesson put things in a simple way that I can wrap my head around finally. Excited to get started practicing this stuff. Thank you!
This was very interesting and useful for me----thank you. I have been trying for ages to break out of the blues/pentatonic straitjacket and be a bit more jazzy. More please!
Excellent as always, Adrian. Your wide breadth of musical knowledge - and eclectic tastes - presented with such clarity, makes all of your lessons a treat. Thanks!
Well Adrian with your musical knowledge, tastes and obvious teaching abilities I am happy to follow along and consume. Another great insight. Thank you.
That was very enlightening for me because I just started to get my feet wet in the jazz world so please, please do at least another beginner’s friendly lesson like this again Thanks for this lesson, Samuel Joseph
The fact that this is so useful Adrian is down to the thought you put into the lesson and its structure and how clearly you demonstrate it. I'm dipping into jazz and some standards from the real book (ireal pro is very good for this) and was just starting to see those II-V-I progressions everywhere. Once you get that, you're on your way I think. Thanks. Really appreciate it.
Very nice -- I particularly liked the don't-be-intimidated assurances, since from the outside (and on many RUclips videos too) jazz does seem technically forbidding.
I loved this lesson and I would like more of these beginner jazz lessons and a lesson on the major pentatonic scale and other useful scales. Keep alternating those lessons with the post punk song lessons.
Hi Adrian. Another fantastic lesson here. I've been trying to learn some basic jazz guitar theory and most lessons I've watched on youtube have glossed over some very important key points you shared here (like focusing on the intervals). I really appreciate that you take on such varied types of music and also focus on both beginner/intermediate as well as more advanced material. I can't think of anyone else who can go from a punk rock tune one week, country the next, and then followed by jazz. This is why you are the only one I support on Patreon. Please keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing you include some more jazz again soon.
Awesome!!!! Since this geared towards a beginner, show us how you can achieve those tones without using a “classic jazz box” guitar. Be a little mechanical on pickup and amp settings in a general way. I love how you teach 👍. You inspire me to play more and help others.
“We have to limit ourselves to the most important chords, because, as you know, there are so many meaningless chords for guitar…” -Mickey Baker’s Complete Course in Jazz Guitar, Book 1
I love that book! But on the same page there are 26 chord diagrams and he calls them the most important chords and says you must learn to use them right away. While the D13b5b9 sounds great, I don’t think I’ve ever used it outside of that book.
Thanks, Adrian, for the straightforward and understandable tutorial on these jazz basics, which I am new to. I like that you teach different styles, please keep the variety coming. Some swing comping would be great if you can get around to it.
I agree that jazz might sound "academic", very unlike rock 'n roll. But it doesn't have to be if you listen to a lot of jazz and then try to play it. I went to these chords shortly after learning barre chords, and with pure practice, I can play these chords smoothly.
like finding a chef who you click with on more than a recipe or two here and there. ACPG you give great lessons! thanks for awesome content, carry-on :]
Yet another excellent lesson, many thanks. Anything more which you would have to offer in the jazz realm would be much appreciated. My only complaint is that your teaching is so solid, and understandable, that you have become the bright, shiny object... just when I was trying to get stuck into some blues work :)
Best tutorials on the Tube. As we’re in jazz territory, can you do ‘Walk Out to Winter’ at some point? I’ve been trying to suss it out for months and it’s still not right.
Yes, been meaning to look at some Roddy Frame for a while. One of the few players who can put sophisticated jazz chords into a pop song without it sounding naff. Ain't easy to work his stuff out but I'm probably going to have a go later in the year.
@@acpg Steely Dan used jazz chords wonderfully in their music. While I wouldn't call them pop musicians, they were more pop than jazz in terms of the audience they reached.
Thanks, great video. I would love to see lessons on different rhythms for comping in jazz and in all possible genres really. Like the blue bossa you showed, it was too quick to easily follow. And of course how to solo in different jazz styles. Your teaching style is incredibly logical and structured clearly building up the concepts. I think your perspective would be a great addition to the jazz resources on youtube especially for people who want to play in all genres rather than jazz exclusive. How to use some of the jazz concepts more generally ( (when you do not want to rearrange in jazz style, just use some concepts) is also largely missing in youtube-scape.
For well over 20 years i’ve wanted to be able to play like Nat King Coles Trio Oscar Moore but thought the theory far too difficult. I’m learning gradually and even got myself a Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II, now just need a nice Jazz amp to go with it.. Autumn Leaves is the first I’m learning and with these new shapes from you I’m on my way as a beginner.. thanks as always Adrian 👏
Fantastic. I'd love to play jazz but have always found the tuition materials too complex. That was just the right level (for me, at least). I'd love some similar stuff in the future.
Great lesson - I've just discovered your channel and I'm really impressed by the clarity of your teaching and the breadth of styles covered here. One thing I would like explained please Adrian is Patreon. You say "pay what you like" but is it really as straightforward as that or is there an actual minimum regular contribution involved, below which access to the materials is denied?
Could you take a look at In A Big Country by Big Country? It's got so many cool guitar riffs and Chameleons-esque atmospheric guitar work, I'd like to see you break it down
Love you brother, always have, and if you’re not getting sponsored by Patagucci (what we call Patagonia clothing in North Tahoe, CA; I have family who are employees and wear it daily) you should be. It not just caught the eye, but insisted on my attention (as inexpensive as it is) during the much of the video. Which is marvelous, by the way. At any rate, thank you as always for your rad/charming/helpful videos. Cheers! ~Nico
Anyone who can find it, MEL BAY CHORD book, from more than four decades ago. It was an orange color cover and not certain if still in print. I do not know the exact title.
It's not the top string mate, its the first string tthough,I only comment because ur showing this to the novice crowd by all the talking etc,so I think you might confuse some of the beginners, js,I've been playing for decades and the top string has always been string 6(even though tab and notation are upside down)its still is,

I really like that he's going over the basics allows you to really experiment with how to play them with pick or fingers

Thank you so much. Already know these chords, now I know how to use them.

Welcome to Jazz Club! Nice! Great!!! Serioiusly, Adrian, some nice stuff and you can use such chords beyond jazz.
Very nice -- I particularly liked the don't-be-intimidated assurances, since from the outside (and on many RUclips videos too) jazz does seem technically forbidding.
Great, great lesson... I've fearfully avoided jazz for years - and now I want more!!!
Excellent lesson!!! Can you a video for Funk chords Adrian?
Yes, nice idea. Also if you've not seen my 5 Nile Rodgers riffs video do check that out - plenty of funk chord vocabulary to be found there.
Jazz chords like these and funk chords overlap a lot.
one of the best out there, this channel for sure. . .the ;teacher'-style focus on only the essentials is king here!
I loved this lesson and I would like more of these beginner jazz lessons and a lesson on the major pentatonic scale and other useful scales. Keep alternating those lessons with the post punk song lessons.

Wise words. I know Joe Pass had a similarly no BS approach to harmony which was great.
I just read that line the other day. lol

As does Jimmy Bruno.
Sort of the opposite of the Nigel Tuffnel approach.

Thanks, Adrian, for the straightforward and understandable tutorial on these jazz basics, which I am new to. I like that you teach different styles, please keep the variety coming. Some swing comping would be great if you can get around to it.
Finally an easy guideline to learn your first 360 chords in Jazz!

Thanks Adrian; a great lesson for me...Greetings from Germany...
A really excellent lesson, thanks so much Adrian.
I'd definitely be interested in more jazz lessons-- I've been listening to Slim Gaillard a lot lately and would love a lesson around his style.

Beautiful guitar. I’ve never seen one of those, had to Google it. Now I want one 😮
Very nice, making tough stuff easy. Thanx.
Loved this lesson! Ever heard “Over My Head” by Aztec Camera? Would love to see you dissect that one. Lots of jazz chords and licks.
Thanks very much, Adrian !
Really interesting and helpful ! Thank you for sharing !
Cool Vox guitar. I have a Vox SDC-33. Love it
that was beautiful, thank you!

It almost sounded like you were playing the intro to Roxanne but in a different key, which would be a great song to cover.

what model and make is
that guitar ?
At 16:35 and 17:18 he meant to say G7 not C7.
More Jazz would be good, with a leaning to the funkier end please...
Thanks, l try to lean for I don’t know anything above Jezz.👍🙏😊
Adrian, this is a great lesson! In Patreon there are two links to the same pdf: did one should be II V I progression with diminished options? Thanks!
Yes sorry , just realised I posted the same PDF twice. Now fixed - there's a second PDF with all the II V Is and tunes written out.
I just want to thank you for saying "recur" and not 'reoccur"
Might as well@ dim7... i would be bored without them and 2ndary doms
Thats a solid looking shirt. Where did you get it?
I'm fairly jazz curious 😊
