A point you mentioned that really rang true for me was the one about getting back in shape after having already been fit previously. I’m currently 14 weeks back into strength building after a 4-year hiatus from the gym. I was an aspiring powerlifter with a training total of about 1400 lbs. Life happened and I fell into a horrible depression. I was so scared of returning to the gym and having to start from square one to regain all the strength that had previously taken me YEARS to attain. After getting some encouragement from my 16yo son who has gotten into fitness himself, I brushed off the cobwebs and got right back into lifting. I’m not yet where I once was, but my strength as well as my muscles have been returning remarkably fast, and I feel as good as ever! Dr. Israetel might I suggest doing a video on the topic of returning to strength training/bodybuilding after a period of inactivity? I feel like it might encourage others who find themselves in a similar situation that I was in. Anyway, I love your channel. I appreciate your academic approach to the subject, as well as your humor. I’ve learned a great deal from you since I started watching.
I haven’t watched Dr. Mike’s video yet, but you can look at muscle cell nucleation if you’re interested in the why based on biology. Long and short is that muscle cells add nuclei and mitochondria the more they are worked (efficiency because the cells themselves are larger). If you stop working the muscle, the nuclei and mitochondria stay even if the cell shrinks. I’m guessing it’s adaptive because if they had to work that hard once, they might need to again at some point in the future. Once the muscle is worked again after detrain, those extra nuclei and mitochondria “remember” and the cell is already primed, so 💥.
You are an inspiration to me. I am in a similar predicament you are in, but not to your extreme. I suffered an injury that took 8 months to heal because although my physically therapy only took 2-3 months to heal, I suffered from a mental anguish that prevented me from going to the gym. The constant questioning of "what if I'm not strong as I used to be?" or "what if I lost so much gains?" stopped me from going to the gym for 5-6 more months. All those fears came true as I eventually did go back to the gym since I lost muscle, looked flabbier, and was weaker. But since I came back a month ago, I felt that my former strength was in the process of returning. I'm not as strong as I was back then, but I am so close. Here's to us persevering, brother!
In a similar boat, and something I've found is that even after months or years, that previous training and strength never fully leaves you. Your muscles and mind remember the process, you just gotta help em get back up to speed.
I know I’m a women and this content might not be made for me, but I really appreciate your honesty on trainers like this. Dr Mike I just want to thank you! I’ve adopted your training and my gains have exploded! I’ve been focusing on technique instead of weight and I am looking good!
I started watching this channel like 3-4 months ago and absolutely binged all of it. I workout at home and doing a full ROM and slow eccentric not only allowed me to not have to warm up for 15 minutes before a workout but I don't have to do stretching after (also I can use way less weight so I save money on plates). Joint pains - gone, better pumps and better results.
Older middle aged woman here ….that’s my workout ! My trainer has spent 3 years getting me to this point - to be strong enough and flexible enough to complete this program. There are a few adaptations - ab work on a ball to support my lower back and dumbbell bench press on a ball to allow a greater range of motion. Anyone can do this workout anywhere……good to see a basic workout for the whole body.
I am currently rewatching this video. Seing Dr. Mike getting exasperated is funny but seeing him gushing over quality training is just chef's kiss. As someone who workouts at home and has been lost trying so many fitness influencers workouts is refreshing to see that the basics are the way to go.

Sure I’m no longer repping out 275 and I’m only repping 225-240, but it just feels so good and my chest is looking great
That pec stretch stuff is no joke! I feel stupid missing out on like 65% of the growth for so long 😂 still feels kinda silly getting fucked up with half the old weight but w/e the growth is amazing.
Yeah I'm just starting out and can barely do 30kg (65lbs I think) for 8-10 reps, but going all the way down with the bar and feeling my pectorals stretching is simply sublime.
Everyone sharing weight loss and getting shredded experiences is cool and I totally respect that (and is really encouraging) but the one thing that stroke me was the psychological part (at around 15:40). "Working out is a leisure activity. It's optional. You don't have to do it. You GET to do it, you get to improve your health." Man, that is some of the best motivational advice I've ever heard.

Just found you. Watched a few videos. I am hooked. You are so candid while being upbeat, funny, self deprecating and I think the most important thing, as honest as you can be. I think real true information is rare these days. Plus your constant questioning of your own sexuality is also hilarious.

Really enjoyed your Weight Training for Grappling, Dr. Mike! I would love a follow-up as you mentioned in the video. Appreciate your videos critiquing athletes' training as well, helps shed a lot of light on what's important when being sport-specific is a factor.
Dr. Mike thank you for all that you do. Really wish you were around or found you at the inception of my workout journey, would've saved me from multiple mishaps. Following you have only widen my horizon though, can only go up from here. Thank you!
I did a year long cut when I turned 50. Ate super structured 6 out of 7 days. Ate what I wanted on Saturday. Didn’t go to crazy on these days but would just enjoy the day and once a month would have a blowout meal with friends on a Saturday. I lost over 40lbs over the year. When I turned to maintenance I just relaxed on Sunday and ate normally but still am super structured Monday to Friday and I have maintained a proper weight for 6 years. Sometimes cheat meals are just fine. In my opinion.
I think it’s the only way to do it long term because otherwise you might really fall off the wagon. Willpower only goes so far and relaxing your need for it every now and again, allows you to maintain it.
Probably fine if no tendency toward insane cravings. I can easily eat 3500 cal in 10 minutes if I'm not really, really paying attention 24/7, and I can do it day in and day out for years.
0:57 The way he exemplified my name "Eric" alongside his own feels strange as I've always been an outsider looking in, in most social scenarios in life. Duffy getting all the props! Good stuff. None of that silly weird shit, trainers making up movements to try to be original. 1 mil is approaching for ya! Keep up the good work. I've been sending people to your channel. 👍
I appreciate Dr. Mike's knowledge and perspective on training. He shares a lot of the same sentiments that I do. I also appreciate that everytime I watch one of his videos it is also preceded by a Vshred ad. I need to upgrade to ad free RUclips.
One thing I appreciate about Pratt's shirtless scenes in the Guardians movies is that James Gunn, the director, doesn't have him ridiculously dehydrated for the shredded popping veins look. He looks massive, he looks natural, and he looks healthy in his shirtless scenes
His accent sounds weird. Like he’s either a Welsh guy who’s spent time in Newcastle or a Geordie who lives in Wales. But there’s definitely a welsh accent there.
Hello Dr. Mike. I am a HUGE fan of your content. Now, I was in the miltary and had an opportunity to work with special forces (SEALS) for anout 2 years. I have to say, the most of those guys were BIG. Not Arne big, but significantly bigger than the average man. Very strong, and muscular. Most of them, honestly look a lot like you, (your physic.) All this being said, I find you to be a man of integrity and honesty. That is a rarity in ANY industry anymore but especially true for sports and fitness science. Anyway, I feel you have the best, most relevant and fun content on the whole flippin platform. PLEASE dont stop doing what you do. We, older folk, need to know how to get in and stay in the best shape we can. 10,000 thanks!
I'm glad to hear that one-arm dumbbell rows are good, since I discovered that for my self. you can use a _lot_ of weight and they do a fantastic job of targeting your lats. they also feel a lot more stable and flexible than two-arm barbell rows (which feel like they make your shoulders twist in weird ways) and there's no way I could do two-arm rows with twice the weight of the one-arm row. I also love dumbbell butterflies since it's otherwise pretty difficult to target your pecs (you'd need a butterfly machine or something which you can't really have at home).
I was not in special forces, but I had a class taught by a SEAL once, and he said a lot of them actually keep a little body fat because they have to do cold water swimming. He did not look "exceptional" but he was scary fast.
Even for the non-swimmers (SF, etc), they like to have some body fat because they're often in remote locations and could end up in situations where they have to ration.
Marines are very similar. All in pretty good shape but some with dad bod who could still delete you with one hand. My friends who were in told me that in the Marines, they don’t care as much what you look like, body wise, or weigh, just whether you can meet the physical requirements of the job.
I was 336lbs at my biggest, now I'm 182lbs, and am trying to build some bulk. That technique to strengthen the back and shoulders, the dumbbell raise bow? Is gonna help me loads. My back is probably the weakest part of me, and gives me issues across a range of activities. Can't wait to see some progress. Thanks Mike!!!!
My favorite phrase from Pratt about his transformation was an interview where he said he found out he could eat what he wanted and enjoy those few moments and be miserable the rest of the time or sacrifice a little, work hard for a little bit and enjoy his whole life.
I love your style of humor and the editing in your vids! You make really enjoyable content and also help me learn a little more about fitness. Good job!
15:28 it took me so many years to figure this out on my own. Really changed my motivation because I stopped thinking about "I have to do the exercise" and started thinking about "I want to reach this goal".
A comment on the bench press. It’s never worked for me. I never feel like my pec has been worked afterward. I replaced it with DB Press instead and took your advice with pausing at the bottom and have had explosive chest growth and it feels worked everytime. Especially cause of the pause to get that nice stretch.
I get great stimulation from bench so I don't need to do this, but: Have you considered 2-3 sets of flys before bench press to "pre-exhaust"? Could just be your pecs are too strong and don't get stimulated at a weight that makes your triceps or delts fail.
Just wanted to say, from someone that has very little interest in weight training and exercise, your videos are very entertaining and funny! Pretty exceptional work by Dr. Mike to lure in passersby with charisma, humility and character. Thank you 💪
I could be wrong, but I think the pull ups and push ups shown in the videos were from when Chris was completing The Murph challenge, where you have to complete like 100 of each in a day or something, and not necessarily during his "training". Again, I could be mistaken, but it might give some context to the range of motion on them.
Trainer from flyover America here who trains people Duffy-style. Simple moves to get people jacked and lean. I also like that Duffy transmits REAL fitness knowledge to his peeps. Which means a guy like Pratt is better qualified than the NASM, ACE, ISSA, etc. certifed "trainers" most Hollywood actors hire. Hats off to Duffy for a job well done. He's produced an exercise maven in Pratt who is jacked and smart.

Oh my god, his point about getting back in shape after letting yourself go a bit, when you used to be in shape being easier is spot on. Already have one: ruclips.net/video/8vLOHvpwZbo/видео.html&pp=ygUdbGlmdGluZyBhZnRlciBsYXlvZmYgaXNyYWV0ZWw%3D - Dr. Mike
PS best wishes!
@@RenaissancePeriodizationthanks doc, watching it now. Im 4 weeks back in the gym after taking a 5 year break!
I also love that you’re educated in physical fitness and give real advise on muscle growth! I’m going to share your content with my boyfriend as we are both getting into body building. Also your content is entertaining, so it makes it really fun to learn!
We might be his 2 female subs lol He did a really great video on the difference in male/female training, if you haven’t seen it, highly recommend.
It’s for everybody !
It is for everyone!
Course it’s for you !
Working out's for everyone, bruv.
Turns out celebrity workouts can be great when men's health isn't involved
Underrated comment.
Thanks for being here for me Mike, you're an inspiration.
Dr Mike I just want to thank you! I’ve adopted your training and my gains have exploded! I’ve been focusing on technique instead of weight and I am looking good!
Try liver king he has better tips! Steroids are king!
Woooo!! - Dr. Mike
Awesome workout. Old school. Simple. Effective. And even *better* commentary.
I loved seeing a critique with some actual quality training. Demonstrations of what 10/10 techique looks like, with prompts, is so useful and a refreshing change of pace!
I've been involved in many sports from elementary school. I played every team sport available through high-school. I've been in the best shape of my life into my late 30s. I've increased my size and strength into my mid 40s. I was a certified personal trainer, and sports nutritionist for over 10 years, clients getting good personal results.
Fast forward to my early 50s, and I came across this channel. This content is so refreshing! It's like getting back to basics, and a reminder of the most effective way to build muscle.
I'm looking forward to going through these videos.
Good stuff!
69 yr old vet life long natural lifter with low T making a comeback from progressive spinal arthritis & osteoarthritis using the heavy stuff and failure. Endurance is great, can outdo most young guys. Odd I feel better when working out. Can only body squat, but can do press machine. Liking ur channel for a long while, but you hurt my back giving me belly laughs . Thanks Doc. Mike
Vast knowledge, hilarious personality, a skeptical approach with a practical delivery makes this my new favorite go to channel for all things health and fitness. Keep it up!👍🏻💪🏻
Dr Mike, I'm going to do my MSc in Advanced Clinical practice specialising in Sports Medicine. Just curious, is the homoeroticism on the curriculum, or is it extracurricular work?
Can I just take a moment to say how happy I am I stumbled upon your videos. I'm learning so much!
With all the diet and training information I have gleaned from Dr. Mike I have lost 115lbs and gained some muscle too. Currently I'm in a maintenance phase, but very excited to start dropping lbs again. 35lbs to go!
I have been my my trainer for more than ten years. He speaks the world of Dr. Mike, not just his science knowledge; he is really really funny. I neve get tired of these videos. Thank you.
Started lowering the weight on bench, going nice and slow on the eccentric, stopped bouncing whatsoever off my chest, and I’ve noticed the best chest gains of my life @29 in terms of size. Sure I’m no longer repping out 275 and I’m only repping 225-240, but it just feels so good and my chest is looking great
Stopping the ego lifts is such a good idea, your joints will thank you too eh
Awesome, I love it! - Dr. Mike
That pec stretch stuff is no joke! I feel stupid missing out on like 65% of the growth for so long 😂 still feels kinda silly getting fucked up with half the old weight but w/e the growth is amazing.
Yeah most definitely, I have yet to hit 225 yet. But it’s fun just slapping 185 on and repping
As someone who was 297 two months ago and is now 265 and getting back into the gym this is some good motivation to keep at it, and some great knowledge to make my training more effective. Thanks Mike!
Hope youre still on track man. Mind sharing what you did?
Dr. Mike I am a Alaskan driller helper and work 12 + hours everyday for a month at a time at remote locations. I watch your fitness channels and I love your training videos and these with your humor. After a long day and a workout I watch your videos and you are just an awesome funny character. Much ❤ man
As a patriotic Welshman I feel obligated to call you out here Mike, that is not a Midlands accent, it’s a Welsh accent! Cymru am byth🏴
Cywir!😂
My exact thoughts!
Thought the same thing and came here to make sure a Welshman had picked up on it
It’s like calling an American a Canadian 😂
Yep , definitely a Welsh accent
Sir, I thoroughly enjoy and respect your content! Thanks so much.
This is the wholesome (yet suitably crushing) fitness reaction video we've been waiting for. And I can't believe how much useful and not confusing information was jammed into here... Like Dr. Mike into Chris Pratt's DMs.
Your praise for a legit trainer and your pragmatic - and funny approach to the critique just won the “Like” and “Subscribe” from me.
Well done, keep it up!
That is a South Wales accent Dr Mike. Some spectacular gyms in that part of the world and happy to act as host. Educational and pump inducing. What more could you want!
I thought he sounded a wee bit scottish??? maybe???
Definitely Welsh, Scottish 😂
i thought it was north east - sunderland or durham direction ...
Definitely Welsh
I was convinced some North East England in there, and I’m from Newcastle!
Dr. Mike is the funniest fitness channel on RUclips! He's a genius! Watching his videos helps me to not feel so intimidated by fitness process.
Dr. Mike, thank you for everything you do. You've made my fitness journey so much more efficient and straightforward. Thanks to your help I've lost 17 lbs in 2 months while adding 25 lbs to my bench press. At 37 I'm the strongest I've ever been with a 200lb bench in near site.
THANK YOU.
Good work 👍
@beanscornbread8730 thanks man, I appreciative it.
Mike I really enjoy your content and delivery. It's become one of my go-to youtube sites and I've subscribed as a result. Very sound, easy to understand, supported by research. Thanks so much for what you do, brother.
😂😂 Duffy has training figured out, but mannnnn Pratt doesn't. Those pull-ups and pushups had me wheezing.
Gas station push-ups always get me wheezing too, brother 💪🏼😮💨
He needs to go back to Duffy fr
Even though you are a disgusting browns fan, YES. Either workout and do it right or don’t. Bullshitty exercises are nonsense.
10:10 Watching Chris Pratt perform the world's worst pull-ups just made my day so much better. I feel much more confident about my own pull-ups now, even though I can't do many 🤣
If you can do a better workout, all you need it his Doctor 🤣
This series is such a joy. Please never stop!
Just found you. Watched a few videos. I am hooked. You are so candid while being upbeat, funny, self deprecating and I think the most important thing, as honest as you can be. I think real true information is rare these days. Plus your constant questioning of your own sexuality is also hilarious.
Real talk. The information that Dr. Mike Israetel provides is legitimately high yield. The best health information about hypertrophy training I've ever seen. Great stuff 👍.
15:30 sums it up nicely in regards to the act of weight training. I started doing it to improve my body. Stayed in it to improve my mental health. The latter made it a must.
Finally a good trainer
Dr Mike is the best no BS entertainment this side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, sure beats watching the news AND I learn how to improve my workout...what's there not to like ❤
So glad to see a good example for once. Way to go Duffy 🎉🎉🎉
9:46 "Duffy where you at? Your boy is f**kn up" 😂😂
800K Let's go! Well deserved. Love your videos!
I love how he has the knowledge to be a pompous critic but instead he offers helpful tips while pointing out what they did right. This is my guru for lifting.
Really enjoyed your Weight Training for Grappling, Dr. Mike! I would love a follow-up as you mentioned in the video. Appreciate your videos critiquing athletes' training as well, helps shed a lot of light on what's important when being sport-specific is a factor.
Alright, I'm starting exercising and this is guaranteed to be one of my top 3 channels.
I'm glad I found this.
Dr. Mike thank you for all that you do. Really wish you were around or found you at the inception of my workout journey, would've saved me from multiple mishaps. Following you have only widen my horizon though, can only go up from here. Thank you!
These videos are great, informative & funny. Thanks!
Thanks to Dr. Mike I now feel a little bit closer to normal today with this incredibly niche interaction.
Appreciate the little things in life folks!
I'm fairly new to the channel, but only half way through the vidbso far, I've never seen such a positive review of a trainer.
The bisexual panic is real.
Welcome to the bi-cycle dude. Hot people are…hot.
Amazing episode, Mike. I'm two months into my new gym routine after finding RP and making great progress! Btw, pretty sure that's a Welsh accent 😉🐉
Definitely a Welsh accent! Glad I'm not the only one to recognise that😂
@@ThePurple0range I don't think the people of Wales or Birmingham would be happy 🤣
Your Vids are Really Helping Me … Between your Knowledge and Your Sense of Humor I’m Obsessed…!!!
11:10 As a guy from the Midlands, I’m pretty sure that was a Welsh accent
His accent sounds weird. Like he’s either a Welsh guy who’s spent time in Newcastle or a Geordie who lives in Wales. But there’s definitely a welsh accent there.
100% that's a Welsh accent
I was convinced some North East England in there, and I’m from Newcastle!
Sounds like NE to me, Alnwick/Hexham. Wierd mix though.
I’m from South Wales, he sounds 100% like he’s from here to me.
Hello Dr.
15:56 i’m sorry I can’t help it the faces😫😫🤣🤣🤣
I was not in special forces, but I had a class taught by a SEAL once, and he said a lot of them actually keep a little body fat because they have to do cold water swimming. He did not look "exceptional" but he was scary fast.
The also dont sit at a desk all day and have lots of NEAT
Even for the non-swimmers (SF, etc), they like to have some body fat because they're often in remote locations and could end up in situations where they have to ration.
Marines are very similar. All in pretty good shape but some with dad bod who could still delete you with one hand. My friends who were in told me that in the Marines, they don’t care as much what you look like, body wise, or weigh, just whether you can meet the physical requirements of the job.
@@TheBaumcmheight and weight standards still exist in the marine corps.
Getting close to that sweet million! Great channel 🙌
Dr Mike is the first American I’ve seen who knows about the midlands in the UK. But I’m sorry to say he was Welsh. 11:10
This is the first time I’ve seen you praising someone’s training. It’s nice to see
3:07 I actually saw that video because it’s Tom Brady’s workout and I couldn’t stop cringing 😂
@15.55 SPOT on. Never heard it put better. Absolutely on the money.
3:43 man this part killed me 🤣🤣
I love your style of humor and the editing in your vids! You make really enjoyable content and also help me learn a little more about fitness. Good job!
0:07 "Crom, I have never prayed to you before..."
15:28
it took me so many years to figure this out on my own.
I get great stimulation from bench so I don't need to do this, but:
Have you considered 2-3 sets of flys before bench press to "pre-exhaust"?
Well, in the words of InfiniteElgintensity, All those pullups still equate to "ZERO!"
Yeah I hear that. In my world, there's not really a context possible for that technique. :( - Dr. Mike
@RenaissancePeriodization Are you saying you have standards? :)
Thanks for the reply and all the incredible videos!
4:09 stress got bros religion changed😂
It was refreshing to see someone thats an actual knowledgeable trainer in hollywood
11:10 That is a Welsh accent. Midlands is completely different 😂
Holy shit you may have just changed my whole perspective in the span of a few seconds. "Its a privilege, you don't have to work out, you get to work out." I've been struggling to find motivation and this mindset honestly might be exactly what I needed
I don't wanna be buff anymore, I wanna be Duffy.
Oh my god, his point about getting back in shape after letting yourself go a bit, when you used to be in shape being easier is spot on. I was in super good shape for a while (like 2015-2020 timeframe), let myself get more out of shape than ever in my life from 2021 to November of ‘22, but got myself back into amazing shape in less than a year and ran a sub-3 marathon in October ‘23. It was a first time marathon too. I dropped 35 lbs and went from about 24% body fat to
5:30 I thought he said "My job is to be a God"
I'd love a video on your take on reverse grip bench press. And just different grip styles in general. Really love you take on working out.
That accent, MIKE…. Is a WELSH accent. Not even the same country …. Although still UK, so kind of the same country. Still love you, it’s ok we get forgotten in wales a lot
11:09 Turns out you can't actually spot a Midlands accent any day of the week but otherwise stellar content, just found your channel and I'm very glad I did! :D
05:24 As a trainer, my job is to be a god
Thank again. RP= Regular People :) Good Job!
That's a Welsh accent at 11:00
