I had bad teeth pain and chewing gum helped that pain go away. I chewed gum for 5 years from the time I woke up till bedtime. After this timeframe I had my teeth fixed and stopped chewing gum. It was around day 3 of no chewing I started to get horrible, borderline torturous pain in my jaw muscles and neck. My masseter muscle was so used to moving up and down from chewing gum that it didn't know what to do. This was pure suffering from the pain I went through. So any treatment that can reduce the jaw muscles is well worth it in my opinion. And please stay away from gum , hard candies, ice , chewy foods , etc. You do not , I REPEAT, YOU DO NOT WANT TO GO THROUGH THIS.
Got it done for bruxism. Worked like a charm. Didn’t clench or grind for weeks for the first time in my life. First month noticed slimming that made my face oval shaped but 2 months later I noticed hollowness and saggy jowls. I definitely wasn’t expecting it to go from good to bad that fast. When will my masters grow back?! I’m at my peak hollowness and I’m 4 months post Botox.

My friend got Botox through a friend of a friend who's a RN. She now has to endure a weird muscle that protrudes out as she chews. It looks like a ball pushing in and out of her lower face. It's been 8 mos and she's been hiding. Not even a surgeon could fix it so she stopped adding more Botox to the area. Unfortunate
I got botox in my masters two years back , and my face changed for the worse . I just got it once . I lost all the definition in my jaw and unfortunately my face is shorter now . guess im the first person in the entire world that something this has happened . my jaw used to be vertically longer (my face used to be longer ) somehow the entire jaw and chin area lost all of the muscle or I guess bone and my face has become shorter and narrower . to again reverse the width of the jaw and chin and the length of my face I had to plan a jaw surgery :/ which I will be getting it done next year . im grateful that was able to find a good surgeon . its a long story . it has messed me up completely . but my face is much better now . Thank you for sharing this! I'm quite self-conscious about my square face and incredibly broad, wide jawline. Although I want to have Botox, I'm not entirely sure if it will works or not on my jaw.
Thanks so much for sharing this, you're the only surgeon I know of who spoke about this so it was very useful when this happened to me after massater botox! I wish I could come see you to get this done. As a follow up question for you: instead of getting filler there, how does fat grafting hold up? I'd prefer fat grafting if it holds up well since it doesn't migrate like filler and the cost breaks even just 2-3 years in. Edit: As well, what type of filler do you recommend in this area? I got Juvederm in my lips and I can still feel the 'filler lines' 4 weeks in (and it hurts when I press on it) whereas I heard a filler like Restalyne Kiss has this problem less often. This made me realize that the type of filler can also make a huge difference! Thanks so much in advance.

I feel like my face looks heavy and doesn't have the right proportions anymore. It's been a year now and it doesn't get better. What can I do to make my face go back to normal? Thanks in advance.
Artistic filler to the angles is the solution. There’s no doubt masseteric botox is an awesome tool. But if you have a weak jaw, that needs to be addressed too. The combination of botox and fillers in this region really allows us to reshape, not just reduce, the posterior lower 1/3 of your face.
@@christinehammond2434 as the video creator said, a possible way to mitigate it is with jaw filler to fill in the weak areas and bring back definition. I didn’t do this personally for cost reasons but that’s a route I think could work if you have disposable income.
Not necessarily- there are a lot of benefits to masseter slimming with neurotoxin, if you happen to notice that the jaw angle becomes too weak (MAD), that aspect can be treated with filler. Filler is not intended to reverse the effect of neurotoxin, but to enhance the final result.
Great effect, but what about when the filler eventually migrates? There is an increasing number of research that finds filler in patient's faces 5, 10 years after the injection - often in novel spots.

does adding the jawline filler slim the frontal view as well? Thanks for the info, I was wonder why my botox to the masseter started seeming less effective over time (I've gotten it injected several times over the last few years)
Even though it adds to the “bigonial width”, technically making the face wider by some measurements, if it is placed deliberately and artistically in the correct spot, it should not make the face appear wider.
I'm 37 and recieve botox for migraines (injections in jaw, forehead, temples, neck, head, shoulder blades). I would love to hear your thoughts on this and if there are long term effects... I have been getting this done routinely for 3 years. I had noticable large jaw muscles from clenching as well which have gotten smaller. In the last 6-12 months I have noticed some sagging under my chin and Crepey neck skin? (This was Not an issue prior) Could the botox possibly be causing this over time? Should I expect any long term effects?
This is a great question. Hard to say whether the botox is causing neck laxity but its plausibly contributing. Botox causes paralysis and deconditioning of its target so you might expect loss of volume in the temples (not ideal), smoothness of the forehead (good), softening of platysmal bands in the neck (also good), and slimming of the trapezius muscle (desirable in women).
@@jonathanzelkenmd Thank you for your response. Yes there have been benefits to receiving the botox for migraines. I do enjoy having less wrinkles and migraines but I don't necessarily want to replace one problem for another. Is there anyway to know for sure if it's the cause?
Does this mean that if you stop the clenching or grinding that is causing your masseter muscle to swell and it goes down naturally you will develop jowls? And if so can they be taken away with lipo?
It does not. Jowls are not caused by botox, but because of the interplay of facial volume, if there is a deficiency where the masseter lies, this will make the “jowl” relatively more prominent in some.
I assume it can only affect people whose masseter is 'normal' size and with botox injections they are making it really small to achieve slimming effect? Can this still affect me if my masseters are really big due to years of jaw clenching, and with botox I would only achieve the 'natural' size which I would have without grinding?
I think this works best on patients with hypertrophic (enlarged) masseters. The dose and degree of change varies by person so you will discover it’s impact better than I can predict it :)

Great question. It does seem that way, but the moral of the story is that great results can be achieved with injectables, but you still need to respect facial anatomy and harmony.
Aren't humans wonderful? We want hair and fat where we don't have it and vice versa. We pluck our eyebrows but put on fake lashes. We shave our legs but wear hair extensions. We remove fat but inject it in other places. We train muscles that are weak and paralyze muscles that are strong. This video is the epitome of that ridiculousness: buccal fat removal and masseter muscle botox to slim the face creates a void that needs filling 🥴🥴. Yay for creating jobs though 🙃
I’ve thought about all those others except strengthening some muscles yet paralyzing others haha that’s great. Paralyzing certain face ones works marvelously well for eliminating headaches tho:)
It's sucks but all we can blame is vanity & human's, non stop search for 'perfection.' The Golden ratio ( or atleast as close as possible to it) for the face is a blessing for those whom were born with it (Which is rare) And aging is viewed as basically a sin I know when I look my best I get treated ( by everyone) just above normal. When I'm not so perfect (even maybe just a bad hair day) Most people treat me like I am Satan's daughter or like a witch that needs to be burned at the stake. Physical 'beauty' is evolutionary, and ESPECIALLY for women. If we don't 'evolve' with this trend most of us will get left behind...so either we keep up, or be discarded
If we all had perfect weight or were skinny and young like this model, the filler may make a slight minuscule difference other than that save your money. Never add weight to your lower face if you can help it or in a few years you’ll end up with a jaw like a flipping line backer to go with your jowls.
Hello I’m looking into this because I grind my teeth and often wake up feeling my teeth clenched down on my tongue and it honestly scares me. Also one of my teeth is almost chewed all the way down due to bruxism
I had my buccal pads removed about 22 years ago and just started botox injections into the masseters for bruxism a few weeks ago (one of my dentists recommended it after I cracked a tooth). What might I expect in terms of how this might affect my face straight on and from the side? I didn't start the botox for cosmetic reasons but am thinking I might need to address the possibility of future lack of fullness.
Same here, i have a relly wide lower face because of severe bruxism, on the left side is worse, i did it today for health reasons, i didnt even know abou this cosmetic effect
I would love an update because I also need to remove my bucal fat pad since I bite my chicks on the inside and wanted to have masseter botox for bruxism. Had 3 broken teeth already.
Does this happen with small doses 0f tox along the jawline? It was 8 units along each side of the upper jawline and also my platysmal bands. I think like 40 units altogether. It was only 2-4 units in the masseter.
I had invisalign and now i have that space where the massater should be :( only on one side i wonder why. And my face is more square with enlarged mas. I want to reverse it but i cant :(
im getting chin lipo but i cant decide whether i should get a bichec or just do massaeteer botox for my round/full cheeks with it? could i send you a pic and get your opinion on what would be best to do
I'm so back and forth about this, my already square face has gotten noticeably more square/wider around my massesters from jaw clenching and grinding over the years. My injector said she thinks my face can handle masseter botox well but I'm scared it'll ruin my jawline and I don't want botox 🫠
I have applied botox 5 times in the masseters and this last time I did not notice the slimming effect that was so beautiful that I had the previous times, I feel terrible and worried, why do I no longer have the same effect? is worse than null, please help meeeee 💔💔💔
Hello dr what do you think about prevention botox when you’re young and dont have wrinkles yet? I am scared that its just a scam so more people get botox done
Seems gimmicky but they say the best wrinkle treatment is prevention. There’s some merit to that statement although there’s no scientific evidence to back it up.
Idk . I think we're doing too much. Just turned 60, hv aged really well. My mom was religious about moisturizer etc. I picked up the habit in my early 20s. I Don't smoke ( big deal for skin) I can get 350 of botox & be.just as happy if not more so than when I spend 1k. Forehead, between eyebrows & above lips. I'll feel pretty good. I've watched yt videos , gone in asking for injection in specific places. I either dont like it or can't tell a difference. Less may be more. Derma-plain is effective as well
I am experiencing significant laxity around my mouth now. I’m 2.5 months post. Can I expect this laxity to go away, or will I have to have some sort of surgical lift/lipo? I’m 36.

Hi, I overdid my masseter botox and I'm so sad about my new face... it's so gaunt and long now with that "hollow" space you're referencing. Besides filler, do you have any tips for building the masseter back up? Or will it go back to normal once the Botox wears off? And how long does that take? Thank you!
The muscle is merely paralyzed temporarily but will gain back muscle as it wears off. Bondenavat ‘s video “I almost ruined my face! | masseter Botox” Talks about this exact situation . You should check it out
I want to get this because I’ve been chewing a lot lately and I want to reverse that because I notice my face looks wider than just a few years ago. So I’m just trying to get my old face back. Are the results completely reversible of I don’t like it?
I chew nicotine gum too and I just got botox in my masseters today! I’ve been looking into and thinking about it for awhile but, now I’m worried. I’m 26 so I’m hoping my face won’t change for the worse.
Oh My god! I had lipo on my cheeks and now the buccal fat is visible. I have two bumps on my cheeks very visible. This reminds me of this. What to do? :(
I assume the MAD wouldn’t be a byproduct for first time patients? I’m looking to get Botox for my masseters and I’m Asian and 30 and a first timer. Will MAD affect me?
It might or might not depending on the skill of your injector, your response to the injection, your anatomy, and your expectations. Of course there’s always an answer for it :)
Can I get botox my left cheek getting fat and suddenly and one side my face flatter than other so i want injections botox in left side can ? Can slim the face 😊
It all seems to me counterproductive.. why inject botox to reduce then filler to fill the same area..just get the buccal fat removed and leave the jawline alone
Great question. Most patients love the overall benefit of masseter reduction. Localized revolumization is not intended to reverse the effect of masseteric atrophy, only to restore volume to one cosmetically significant spot.
I’m 16 and thinking about getting masseter Botox for facial slimming since I have a round face. I’m just scared it will cause aging / sagging faster and that my defined jawline will be lost. What do you think?

No it isn't. I'm getting masseter injections next week because my fibromyalgia has made my fascia and muscles so tense, I'm having multiple jaw spasms a day and am in danger of breaking my teeth, and my teeth have worn away a lot. My jaw gets stuck open multiple times in my sleep and I will clench it back shut - this happens over a dozen times a night sometimes. I can't eat most of my favorite foods anymore because I can only eat soft foods. This is going to help improve my quality of life. I've been in constant pain for over a decade, and botox has been the answer for my cervicogenic headaches and tension headaches and my teeth and jaw problems. Do no harm has more nuance than that, and if someone is getting something changed to make them feel better about themselves and more confident, that is not a form of harm. Your attitude is the only inappropriate thing here.
Cosmetically, some patients like me, feel that their wide lower faces causes more "harm" to their self-confidence. If done safely, the doctor is deliberately making their lives better, not causing harm.
If you have bruxism, you'd understand. It's painful to clench and grind your teeth all night and wake up with migraines and aching jaws. Forcing the muscles to relax, atrophy even, is a temporary cure for this awful condition.

I’ve thought about all those others except strengthening some muscles yet paralyzing others haha that’s great. Paralyzing certain face ones works marvelously well for eliminating headaches tho:)
😅
It's sucks but all we can blame is vanity & human's, non stop search for 'perfection.'
The Golden ratio ( or atleast as close as possible to it) for the face is a blessing for those whom were born with it (Which is rare)
And aging is viewed as basically a sin
I know when I look my best I get treated ( by everyone) just above normal.
When I'm not so perfect (even maybe just a bad hair day) Most people treat me like I am Satan's daughter or like a witch that needs to be burned at the stake.
Physical 'beauty' is evolutionary, and ESPECIALLY for women. If we don't 'evolve' with this trend most of us will get left behind...so either we keep up, or be discarded
great info doc! but ill stick to doing my smile makeovers LOL
😪 thank you for this video bc I was thinking of getting this done.
You still can do it, but understand that you may desire jawline enhancement if you notice a depression along the posterior jawline.
If we all had perfect weight or were skinny and young like this model, the filler may make a slight minuscule difference other than that save your money. Never add weight to your lower face if you can help it or in a few years you’ll end up with a jaw like a flipping line backer to go with your jowls.
What should I do? I have sagging jowls because I was injected Botox into my masseter muscles for facial slimming?
1. Wait (botox wears off) 2. Address jowls 3. Consider filler as discussed in this video
Lol literally what this video is about and you still ask what you should do 👁👄👁
You can also chew gums to ware Botox off quicker
@@tadasrirathung9492 Thank you for this advice. It is wearing off after chewing gum throughout the day.
@@jonathanzelkenmd does it eventually go back to normal if you wait?
Hello I’m looking into this because I grind my teeth and often wake up feeling my teeth clenched down on my tongue and it honestly scares me.
Also one of my teeth is almost chewed all the way down due to bruxism
May be helpful for you.
What filler do your prefer for this treatment Doctor Restalyn L?
Any HA filler or Radiesse
I have masseter atrophy deformity without botox is that normal? 😰
It certainly can be
I had my buccal pads removed about 22 years ago and just started botox injections into the masseters for bruxism a few weeks ago (one of my dentists recommended it after I cracked a tooth). What might I expect in terms of how this might affect my face straight on and from the side? I didn't start the botox for cosmetic reasons but am thinking I might need to address the possibility of future lack of fullness.
It may make the lower third of your face 1-2 cm narrower. Depending on your facial anatomy you might really like the result. Keep us posted.
Same here, i have a relly wide lower face because of severe bruxism, on the left side is worse, i did it today for health reasons, i didnt even know abou this cosmetic effect
Update please? :)
We all respond differently but 2-4 units is mild.
I had invisalign and now i have that space where the massater should be :( only on one side i wonder why. And my face is more square with enlarged mas. I want to reverse it but i cant :(
How come invisalign make your massater bigger?
How much does something like this cost?
What is the perfect age to get it
It depends
how much would this be
im getting chin lipo but i cant decide whether i should get a bichec or just do massaeteer botox for my round/full cheeks with it? could i send you a pic and get your opinion on what would be best to do
It might be best for you to discuss with the surgeon performing your chin liposuction
I'm so back and forth about this, my already square face has gotten noticeably more square/wider around my massesters from jaw clenching and grinding over the years. My injector said she thinks my face can handle masseter botox well but I'm scared it'll ruin my jawline and I don't want botox 🫠
ask her if she will fill you after the front of your face drops depending on your age. while it narrows masseter it pushes facial fat fwd!
Do you offer online consultations for those of us that would like your recommendation but live far from your office?
Sure thing. Call (949) 432-4730 between 9-5 PST to schedule yours.
What if you don't want to slim your jawline at all, just to relax that muscle because of pain radiating from there and headache?
Absolutely worth it. The message here is that if it creates secondary issues we have a solution for it
I have applied botox 5 times in the masseters and this last time I did not notice the slimming effect that was so beautiful that I had the previous times, I feel terrible and worried, why do I no longer have the same effect? is worse than null, please help meeeee 💔💔💔
Amarantha I am sorry but without having treated you or seeing you there’s not much I can say.
I have a popped jaw on both sides, would this help with any pain happening there?
Botox has been shown to help TMJ disease so it’s certainly possible
I had this done about 10 days ago and I dont see a difference at all 😪😪
I am sorry that you do not see an improvement. Be sure to choose your injector wisely
Me neither
It’s the second time I’ve gotten it and no difference each time
Did it require more time to show?
Hello dr what do you think about prevention botox when you’re young and dont have wrinkles yet? I am scared that its just a scam so more people get botox done
Seems gimmicky but they say the best wrinkle treatment is prevention. There’s some merit to that statement although there’s no scientific evidence to back it up.
Retinoids
I’m a registered nurse and cosmetic injector,I suggest you wait until wrinkles appear.
Nothing to prevent if there is no wrinkles.
You’d really need to be seen but this is possibility with any kind of facial volume loss, be it fat, bone or muscle.
I was doing threads in May and put a cog thread through this muscle. I still get sharp pain there.
Sorry this happened to you. Threads and fillers are definitely not without risk.
Can you use sculptra here??? Instead of HA???
Sculptra would not be my choice for this application
Hi doc , i got 40 units of botox in total and now post three weeks my lower front teeth hurt , its like the sensitivity pain but constant , 24*7. Did the botox do something?
You should absolutely ask this question to your injector.
How many mls of filler are injecting into each side?
1 per side.
I just got this done for my tmjd I clench my jaw so much when I am stressed and sleeping.
Did it help, I have tmj
Did it affect your looks
@@CS48293 just a little, not much. I've had it done twice now, my upper cheeks are just very full so it's hard to tell but my lower half of my face has slimed a little but I don't think anything dramatic
So your saying instead of getting masseter, i should get that jaw filler ? or get masseter and then the filler after??
Yes, the two serve different purposes and you may find that both may be desired.
Does that help with tmj?
Botox to masseter can help
Hi, I overdid my masseter botox and I'm so sad about my new face... it's so gaunt and long now with that "hollow" space you're referencing. Besides filler, do you have any tips for building the masseter back up? Or will it go back to normal once the Botox wears off? And how long does that take? Thank you!
The muscle is merely paralyzed temporarily but will gain back muscle as it wears off. Bondenavat ‘s video “I almost ruined my face! | masseter Botox” Talks about this exact situation . You should check it out
I would expect it to wear off in 3-4 months.
How often have you done it?
Was it because of frequent injections or high dose in one session?
Has it worn off?
Please post chin implant or chin filler
filler in this case. Not sure I understand your question.
How many injection(s) needed to remove jaw fat & get normal shape?
We typically start with 1 syringe per side
@@jonathanzelkenmd What would be the price?
@@bappyfaisal9146 you'd really need to be seen but typically a syringe of filler can range from 800-1200 depending on who injects.
is this okay to do after double jaw surgery?
You would need to discuss with your oral surgeon- but yes, should not be an issue.
I got nassester boxtox and cheek filler and now my smile is weird. Is this permanent?
Probably not but you should discuss with your injector
I want this but just nearly fainted just from watching this lol
Not as bad as it looks :)
I want to get this because I’ve been chewing a lot lately and I want to reverse that because I notice my face looks wider than just a few years ago. So I’m just trying to get my old face back. Are the results completely reversible of I don’t like it?
Like I said its a very powerful tool which should lose its effect with time.
I chew nicotine gum and my face muscles on each side have become huge and my oval face looks round and fat. Could I use Botox to relax the muscles?
I chew nicotine gum too and I just got botox in my masseters today! I’ve been looking into and thinking about it for awhile but, now I’m worried. I’m 26 so I’m hoping my face won’t change for the worse.
For people who have masseter hypertrophy on one side, what would you recommend as a permanent/alil safe solution? Thanks
Permanent solutions may be risky. I like botox to the hypertrophic side.
@@jonathanzelkenmd is it safe to use Botox in the masseter your whole life? Eventually after so much Botox wouldn't that muscle become EXTREMELY weak
Yes, thats the point - weakening that muscle doesn’t appear to influence jaw function
@@jonathanzelkenmd thanks! Would love to see you one day in person ❤️
Why not use Radiesse for the jaw?
That’s a great filler for the jaw.
Oh My god! I had lipo on my cheeks and now the buccal fat is visible. I have two bumps on my cheeks very visible. This reminds me of this. What to do? :(
Perhaps buccal fat removal is all you need. If the bumps bother you, consider meeting with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns.
@@jonathanzelkenmd it's not fat it is the folding of muscle
Does this removal help with tmj.
Botox to the masseter can help with bruxism and TMJ
Kybella to the jowls ok?
I don’t have experience with this use for kybella
I assume the MAD wouldn’t be a byproduct for first time patients? I’m looking to get Botox for my masseters and I’m Asian and 30 and a first timer. Will MAD affect me?
It might or might not depending on the skill of your injector, your response to the injection, your anatomy, and your expectations. Of course there’s always an answer for it :)
Sounds like now you another treatment to compensate for the effect of another treatment.
Yes its an important option for those who truly need or desire masseter botox
Can I get botox my left cheek getting fat and suddenly and one side my face flatter than other so i want injections botox in left side can ? Can slim the face 😊
Possibly? Yes? I would need to examine you.
Ouchhh.
Have you seen Ariana grande’s Jawline? That should answer ur question. Ure wc.
@Monah Zaini then why are women so injecting fillers to have defined jawline on the right place?
Damn that looks like it hurts....
It doesn’t
The preview clips hide the before and after pics. Trustworthy? 🤔
I did not make the preview. Thank you for the feedback
I’m 16 and thinking about getting masseter Botox for facial slimming since I have a round face. I’m just scared it will cause aging / sagging faster and that my defined jawline will be lost. What do you think?
Botox wears off with time and is correctable with filler. Certainly safe to try.
@@jonathanzelkenmd 16 years old
Everyone has a round face when they’re 16 - your face will change a lot until you’re 24-25. Wait until your face is fully developed!!!
Update: I got Botox and it didn’t slim my face at all 25 units on each side…..kinda upset especially for it being $700
@@harley8318 You’re still very young, be careful bc starting too young and doing too much will mess up your face. (Look up Alicia Silverstone. Stacy Dash. is this permanent. coz i heard sometime results may permanent
No, Botox typically reverses itself in time, 2-4 months.

@@jessicaplace6753 yes but not 100%
What a waste of money
First, do no harm. Deliberate muscle atrophy is inappropriate.
I don’t care. Tmj pain is horrible
