Just watched this as I am considering a trafic for work. I have a couple of Citroen C15's in my collection. I an surprised you have so few subs, you deserve many more.
My assumption was siezed piston rings as the 1721cc engine I fitted had sat for a few years. It had good compression but I think the oil control rings had stuck and were letting oil past. I tried no smoke oil but it didn't work. A full rebuild would have been my next option if I had stuck with that engine.
Personally I think the 2.2 petrol was the best engine Renault fitted, so out of the factory range of engines I would have to go for that. But there are several other possibilities with more modern Renault engines, there's a comment on another video from someone in France (I believe) and apparently over there they used to fit either the 1.8 F7P 16 valve or the 2.0 F4R engine. They're both F type so fit straight onto a 1.7 Trafic gearbox apparently. I've never tried but it sounds like an interesting idea. Given the way things are going now I wouldn't be looking to change to another diesel, I think it's very likely the govt will increase taxes on diesel in the near future so if you're going to the trouble of doing an engine swap I'd seriously consider a petrol engine. We run all our vehicles on LPG as well which gives around a 40% saving on fuel bills.
@@classictrafics I've got the last 2.5 diesel 4x4 Trafic licenced in the UK. She's apocalypse proof with the old Bosch pump for veg oil.. toyed with a 2.8 turbo non ECU from a Master but seemed alot of bother to get it to fit. I replaced the crank in the end which is an extremely rare variant with a different size flange at the end..
@@ohmaudio3339 Wow! I've never seen a 4x4, at least not in person. I think they were extremely rare in the UK even when they were new. If you're keen on a diesel engine then I guess trying to fit an aftermarket turbo would be a logical upgrade if you want more power.
I think that's fair. A few years ago I ran a 2.1d daily for 2 years and although I could pretty much keep up with modern traffic fine, you always felt like you were pushing it too hard.

Hi
My recently bought 96' Trafic has the 2.2 : very nice engine, strong and full of power !
Good job, I've to watch others videos !
Una trafic en Brasil 😉👍
Great video - thanks!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
I have a trafic with a 2.2 engine but I want to put a 2.5 turbo because mine is motorhome and heavy the 2.2 is not strong enough
Hi
I love your work, keep it up 🙏
Thanks, I have more content coming very soon!
What would you look for if you were to try to resolve the black smoke and oil usage?

Any tips as to what the 2.5 naturally aspirated diesel could be upgraded too?

@@classictrafics I'm going to keep it original for now aside from a NATO green paint job
What's that stuff you're spraying on the rusty bolts?
Ferrosol by Bilt Hamber, it's a penetrant a bit like GT85 or WD40.
The 1.7 was a little bit underpowered in Traffic's but not as bad as the 2.1d
