With temperatures topping 40 degrees here in the UK in recent years, air conditioning seems to have bumped it's way up to the top of my 'things I'd really like to have' list. Adding A/C to a van made in 1992 certainly isn't a trivial task, but with a rudimentary understanding of the refrigeration cycle, a smattering of kit from the far east and bit of lateral thinking, fingers crossed I can pul...

    How do you know when to use sealant with a gasket or not? For example, on a 2004 vivaro should you use sealant with the metal gasket on the EGR valve or the turbo?

    • @classictrafics
      @classictrafics 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah it's a difficult one really, if the mating surface tolerance is important then usually not, unless there's no gasket at all and it just uses RTV sealant (I know, for example, the later model classic mini differentials were like that). Anything which is part of the coolant system can't hurt to be sealed in my opinion. I'm not sure about exhaust stuff though.

    • @classictrafics
      @classictrafics 5 месяцев назад

      This may well be a good solution, but be careful as it will strip it right back to bare metal. They do finer belts which might be better for that application. I didn't notice any clogging or build up in the bristles which was good too.

    Having recently struggled getting old paint off aluminium crank cases during a motorcycle rebuild i would be interested to see how this tool preformed.

    • @classictrafics
      @classictrafics 5 месяцев назад

      Yes it would be interesting to see how it did. They do different brush heads for these, ranging from fine straight bristles to the more heavy duty ones with the angle at the end, and as I understand the fine ones remove paint without leaving that blasted effect so you'd probably want to try those. They do half thickness brushes as well as curved which apparently help getting round corners. I'm not sure if the genuine belts are compatible with this clone machine but if they are then I will definitely revisit this and try out a variety of different options.

    Would soon put my 100L comp' on overheat mode, I think Chris mainly uses it for seam seal and paint if memory serves. Has no one done a wheel for standard electric grinders, 100/125mm? The interesting one for me was lack of heat, would be a good clean up tool after a chemical peel on a bigger panel imo.

    • @classictrafics
      @classictrafics 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, the lack of heat surprised me too, nothing like what the wire wheel puts in. I thought about making the head fit an angle grinder but unfortunately the speeds are wrong, these work at max 4000rpm compared to 11000rpm grinder. I did think about using a frequency converter to run the speed slower but it just didn't seem worth the effort. I think you're right, Chris seems to use the fine straight brush heads which are for paint removal, looking on the Wurth site they list several grades and the heavier duty ones with the angle bristles are the ones which give the blasting effect.

    • @LeArtisan
      @LeArtisan 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah that makes total sense on the speed issue, I can think of areas all over the phase 2 it would be handy, but air supply would be an issue for me, handy tool though for certain spots, so will certainly put it on the list of toys wanted..@@classictrafics

    What would you look for if you were to try to resolve the black smoke and oil usage?

    • @classictrafics
      @classictrafics 5 месяцев назад

      My assumption was siezed piston rings as the 1721cc engine I fitted had sat for a few years. It had good compression but I think the oil control rings had stuck and were letting oil past. I tried no smoke oil but it didn't work. A full rebuild would have been my next option if I had stuck with that engine.

      Yes, of course, the brand is Gcfix, I'm not sure if they are the manufacturer or just a stockist but I sourced most of the bits from their Aliexpress site. They do various kits including electric and belt driven ones, although I pieced this system together from sperate listings as the courier costs worked out cheaper to send them seperately than if I'd bought the full kit in one go. I'll do a breakdown of the costs at the end but it wasn't as much as I'd thought it might be.

    If there was a real reason to install a separate vacuum port just for a MAP sensor, surely they would have said why , but they didn't. Basically it should be close to a throttle body, where the factory port usually is. Also the shorter the lines the better. Smaller diameter, also better, i use 3.2mm silicone hoses. Basically vacuum should read ~0.3 engine idling, ~0.9 engine off meaning atmospheric pressure.

    • @classictrafics
      @classictrafics 7 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I don't really understand why teeing in is a problem but the stag guide says to add a new takeoff so I guess there must be a reason. When I spoke with the inspector he said they always add a new point on their conversions but he didn't explain why. This was filmed a few months ago but I note your point on the silicone hoses, I would definitely use those in the future, I just hadn't thought to before. I suspect this will be my last LPG conversion though.

    8:30 i had a bad experience using rubber hoses for these tiny vacuum lines. What happens is overtime rubber gets stiff and brakes the plastic nipples from the MAP/temp sensor. The car still runs fine, so the driver wont notice, except now the engine is sucking all the dirty air through that vacuum line. In my opinion silicone hoses are much better fit, very flexible and no need for any metal clamps as its vacuum. And maybe i missed but there should be also an inline gas filter before the MAP. Anyway good work and quality content.

    In Brazil, we have serious problems with liquid gas, due to excessive wear on the engine head due to the high temperatures generated during operation. Cracks, accelerated corrosion, inclusions of materials from the pistons. Engine life is cut in half. Greetings and good work!!!!

    • @classictrafics
      @classictrafics 11 месяцев назад

      Very interesting, we don't seem to have those problems here, is that down to the higher temperatures in summer in Brazil? I know valve seat wear is one of the concerns over here but I've never had any trouble with it. In my experience as long as the valve seats are hardened to take unleaded then it's been alright. I do a fairly low mileage though so it's not too bad. My dad who also has a Trafic (same engine, 2165cc) converted his back in 2008 and he still drives it daily, it was at just over 100k and I think it's got about 165k on it now with no issues.

    • @isbemorph
      @isbemorph 11 месяцев назад

      LPG tune up is unfortunately very problematic, thus causing problems sometimes. Its better to tune it to run a little on a rich side, with negative STFT comparing to a regular petrol. So in case the tank is filled with some lower quality less caloric gas, the engine will not run too lean.
