I feel like I’m in another dimension, because I would have never thought people would be having a Godzilla movie as movie of the year; and that makes me happy.
As a longtime Godzilla fan, I feel like I'm hallucinating. A monster movie being called best film of the year. I must be dreaming this, it can't be real.
I can't be the only one who doesn't understand why they weren't speaking American in it. I thought the film was OK but nobody speaking American seemed unrealistic and ruined it a bit for me.
I am Japanese and my grandfather who served for Japanese navy during WW2 also had a same trauma and guilt. The guilt that he survived from the war. As a kid, I could not understand his feeling of guilt. I never saw him blaming United States or his harsh life after the war. He did not show his emotion much but he loved us very much. He passed away long before the covid. Japan is not a perfect country but I hope that he is satisfied to see our country had recovered from the ash and became peaceful country..
Thanks for sharing that. I believe he would be very happy knowing his country has been rebuilt stronger than ever and that you don't have to fight any wars like he did. My grandfather also fought in ww2 in the pacific for the US and his ship was torpedoed he lost his friends and he almost died. It took him his whole life to forgive the Japanese, but he eventually did and before he died he told me he felt sorry for what happened to Japan and it's citizens. Our ancestors fought battles so that we don't have to. We should never forget that and always respect them.
This movie is phenomenal. Outstanding story, acting, & remake of 1954. Go see it. (I've heard it's only showing in America for two weeks. Not sure if that's accurate) Also wait until the end of the credits rolling on the screen before you leave the theater. Toho, you raised the bar super high on this one & thank you for giving us old hard core Godzilla fans what we've been waiting for, for many years. I grew up in the 70's a huge Godzilla fan. This is the best by far that I have seen.
I was thinking the same thing while watching the 1954! Minus One is really a remake of that film! Also, I'm mad I didn't stay til after the credits! I have to see it again!
It CAN'T be nominated because Oscar rules have changed. In order to be nominated, it has to have diversity--1) at least one gay or trans 2) strong female characters 3) any other skin tone except white.
@@roxannekean6025Are you actually being serious, or going on an "anti-woke crusade"? If serious, then it's no wonder I don't give 2 sh*ts about the "keep my (non) wife's name out your f**king mouth" Oscar dumpster anyways LOL
I'm 55 years old Japanese. My friend's (age 66) father (who passed away a few years ago at the age of 90) told me about his war experience, and near the end of the war, he was bombed near Ginza, where this movie was set. My friend's father was in Tokyo for his university entrance exams, and just then, he got caught up in the collapse of Yurakucho Station (located behind the Nichigeki movie theater that Godzilla destroyed with his tail in the movie). Most of the people who had been around him just moments before died in an instant. One of the Japanese military officers nearby was still saluting, but his body was torn into two, the upper and lower parts of his body.A nearby mother holding a baby disappeared suddenly, and several students nearby survived and survived. However, even decades after going through that hellish scene, my friend's father said, ``Not once did he feel lucky that he was able to survive that place.'' Ta. I watched this movie while thinking back on the story of how much hell there was. It's true that since it's a movie, there are many convenient scenes. However, in the event of an actual disaster, what is taken for granted does not always come true. According to the story of a person who was able to survive without being injured at ground zero in Hiroshima by staying behind a building that was not sturdy, the person on the street opposite him instantly turned into a burnt corpse or disappeared. There was also a story. During wars and disasters, there were many tragedies, but there were also a few miracles. Interesting details about this movie. The hospital that appears at the end is a Christian hospital because the nurses' clothes and the interior of the hospital room are so unique. Godzilla uses his atomic breath to blow away the National Diet Building, and the blast turns from there, blowing away Ginza, and people near Nichigeki (Japan Theater) are blown down Harumi Dori towards Kachidoki Bridge. St. Luke's Hospital, established in 1901, is actually located a little off Kachidoki Bridge. This hospital is known for being the place where many people were taken during the Aum Shinrikyo subway sarin attack. It's a very realistic setting. Sorry for the long text. I hope Google Translate reflects it correctly.
That just blew my mind! I had no idea how much of the film is historically ( and architecturally ) accurate! I take an old Vietnam veteran out for food, to keep him company. His tours were "active" and he's full of bullet holes to prove it. Sometimes he shares awful stories about what he saw with his own eyes. I value the stories because it really drives home how fortunate and comfortable I am. Your story does too - that was great.
In an interview, director Takashi Yamazaki said that it was my weakness for deciding to let Noriko survive in the end. But I like that weakness. Not even weakness, because the loss of Noriko does not dispel Koichi's guilt. From our point of view, he has been made to cry a lot throughout the play, because it is just too pathetic.
It was the only film in the last 20 yrs that actually superseded my expectations with her living. Plus the line at the end about "Is your war finally over?" was too heartfelt with him wailing with joy and guilt that he almost killed himself and would have missed out on her and Akiko's love. Of course American cinema would have them divorced next film, lol
Koichi's reason for being distant was his own shame and disappointment in himself which was just as insurmountable as Godzilla. And when he started letting himself dream of a future, Noriko was killed. He beleived he was being punished and cursed forever.
and for his own decisions and indecisiveness in wartime. Many veterans who saw combat think like this, that they do not deserve happiness or that someone being with them is a detriment to that person. That is why he never let his feelings show to Noriko and why he had that heartless reply to Akiko when she called him Daddy
Great review. I'll definitely check it out as I was really surprised by the nihilistic tone of the film. It's a true horror movie, and matches the feeling of the original Godzilla with modern effects.
I agree. I seen my fill of Godzilla films from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, to today and this is the best Godzilla film yet. Despite so many great films released this year like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Spider-man Across The Spider-verse, this is my favorite film of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if the film gets nominated for Best International Film at the Oscars. If it does, I hope it wins.
They set up the survival of koichi well. Even talked about the lack of ejection seats…and we even saw tachibana say “and another thing…” before we cut. Also shows his forgiveness of koichi from his previous cowardice.
Saw the film on Monday. Imax theater in New Rochelle. Climbed Mt Everest to our seats. Allowed the angina and seizing breath to subside. Then sat amongst 10 other people in the theater. Perfect seats. Perfect movie. Beyond my expectations. I knew it was going to be good, but it was way more than that. Probably one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time.
My takeaway from the girl surviving at the end was regenerating her injuries due to her exposure to Godzilla. You see the black trail of radiation poison going up her neck.
@@bushidoblues9302I heard in the comics, her story revolves around a tragedy due to the radiation where she mutates or something like that. I got a feeling this ended happy only for reality to silently strike in sequel.
@@one.on.one. oh geez... I hope not. But yes, for everyone saying it's a nice happy ending, it is an illusion. The movie ties everything up for Koichi's journey but it doesn't necessarily end on a happy note because of that black spot on Noriko. I was kind of hoping it would mutate her into a giant protector of Japan but who knows eh?
I really want this movie to get some recognition, just saw it , but unfortunately it wont probably win an oscar due to the new rules that make the film eligible :(
Exactly--no diversity. No gays, no strong women, no blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans--not even any white people (gasp!) None of that mattered. We all loved and cared for each and every character anyway.
Oh my god your story about the kids sparked the memories in me about some kids in the back of my theater. It was a nighttime screening, and towards the end of the cinema run, so it was relatively empty, and quiet. Except for two kids in the back right of the theater, who were _constantly_ talking. Like oh my god shut up. I don't even know if they had tickets, it's completely possible they sneaked in because it was late and the entrance area wasn't properly manned. Among several things they did: - Read _every single subtitle_ on screen for about a minute. This was during the scene where Shikashima was being berated by his neighbour for returning. Like STFU I didn't come here for the 12-year-old dub. - Running up and down the aisle, of course. - One of them said "skill issue" when Godzilla nuked Ginza. It was kinda funny I admit but completely out of pocket. - And generally just... talking. Constantly. I don't even know what they were talking about like what is there to yap about. Eventually I snapped and yelled at them to shut up. The first time was short and didn't last very long. But the second when I said "We're trying to watch a movie, if you wanted to talk you shouldn't've come here" worked and they were relatively silent for the rest of the movie. I know that may not have been the best thing to do but considering how empty the theater was, and the fact that someone thanked me afterwards for it, I don't think the others minded. And I think I did them a favor too. Because I heard one of them very audibly say "oh shit" when Godzilla was charging his atomic breath in the final battle to fire on the decoy destroyers. As if they had finally focused on the movie and realised what it could entail.
Movie was great. I seem a nice theory of how Koichi lived is that she was marked or cursed by godzilla somehow. My audience wasnt that bad. But i spent more energy blocking them out, then i could enjoying all the emotional beats properly. The children in the crowd were seemingly there for something like the monsterverse. One right behind me got bored about halfway through and started playing with his seat buttons up and down. One guy needed every drop of his soda. The same kid with the seat, right near the end of the big silent moment near the end, he goes (and since its quiet its loud even though he tried being quiet so it was kinda funny but kinda killed the tension) "Why is it so quiet" then BOOM action. And the best was a guy at the start goes "WHAT THIS IS IN CHINESE IM NOT WATCHING THIS" As his friend group shut him up throughout the film. That first outburst was the worst. His friends kept him in check. But my audience definitely took me out of the film for as much as i loved it. So i plan to go see it again early in the morning lol
Godzilla Official on X: 🦖isn’t going anywhere! In fact, the film will be playing on EVEN MORE North American screens this coming weekend-increasing to over 2,500 locations in the US & Canada starting December 8. As long as people are attending, showtimes will continue. So get your tickets and spread the word! GODZILLA MINUS ONE is (still) NOW PLAYING NATIONWIDE.
Cried a couple of times and same with my friend she's never been into Godzilla and loved it. My experience was great only down side was the overweight man to my right was what I thought was snoring but when I looked over he stopped and I think he just had a breathing problem and while I feel for anyone who has health issues like myself it was slightly annoying a movie I paid a lot of money for was slightly dampened by someone sometime loudly snoring I feel the man should have brought his CPAP machine with him and be a little more mindful in a place where people would prefer no constant snoring if you know you have that condition.
My little rant on this movie. So many people will miss out on seeing this movie. I liked it a lot. Heard how good it was and I’m paralyzed and also deal with aggravated pain non stop so I haven’t been to a movie theater in few years since my 2nd back break and failed surgery unfortunately. Wanted to support a good movie in a franchise I like. Need people to hit the theaters and not wait till it released on an app or something later. Show Hollywood an others that were tired of the crap coming out almost last decade now. A 15 million dollar movie to be made is so much better than these 100 plus million movies with an agenda nowadays. But I do have to say. I forced my self to get a way to the theater a sit in their to try and show my support for movies like this that we enjoy all around. But I was so so so disappointed in what saw in my theater. Living in outer banks and it winter time pretty much in a is a tourist area I understand it slower here now. But we still have 40k people living here year round. So seeing only 3 people in the theater to watch this was very upsetting for me to see. My youngest 25 year old son who came and visited me, 1 older man I didn’t know and then me. Only ones in this theater. An only 2 showing a day here to. So I really do pray it’s doing better in other theaters. We need to show we don’t want woke stuff or agenda forced stuff pushed on us that n destroy franchises a lot of us grew up with, but instead great Movies that stay true to to lore, written and directed by people who actually are fans and know the subject material. Can’t believe people become directors of $100+ million movies a they say they either aren’t fans of the original material or never saw it. They were only hired for an agenda. So over this culture we have now.. so seeing this movie in subtitles didn’t bother me any. Being able to watch a movie I totally enjoyed and stayed true to the lore was so worth me sweating I pain for those 2 hours trying to watch this. Sorry typos iPad texting been weird since last update
Glad you enjoyed it and were able to make it. Don't fret about the small amount of people, the last few years have been like that for every movies, it's really a dieing medium. But Godzilla is breaking all kinds of records and it's known people are enjoying it alot. I agree, I'll now support anything that isn't a woke agenda. Maybe this movie was a once in a lifetime event.
@@bushidoblues9302And let's not forget that they really spent a pittance on advertising for this... I was lucky to catch a trailer on RUclips after a show I watched. Most of my friends didn't even know about the flick until I told them and boy am I glad to know about it now! Today was my 3rd viewing... the first time being a gift I forced my old friend to take me to on opening night for my birthday 😎😆
If it makes you feel better my London theatre was packed, albeit in a small screen. It’s a bit weird how this big action movie starring one of the worlds most recognisable monsters doesn’t seem to be getting a lot of screenings
I disagree with calling the lead character an a**hole when he allowed a random woman and child to live off of him for years . Nobody is owed a relationship, and even though he really cared for her I don't see that as a fair characterization of him
The reason why he didn't acknowledge being Daddy and marrying the girl because in his mind he never left the War. He never mentally moved forward until the end.
This film is definitely the peak of Godzilla human character as I said before this film is great only thing that confuses me is the way they defeated him I personally prefer the oxygen destroyer but the action was so spot on it’s hard not to dislike the movie
i was not able to see this movie in imax last week (thanks Beyoncé) i am watching it again tomorrow in imax because Godzilla has earned that respect! i will see Godzilla the way it was intended to be seen in all of its majesty and splendor.
the reason why noriko survives is i think because of her scar which was moving on her neck shown in the last scene. maybe its related somehow to godzilla reccovering so quickly
I've seen both Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus one in the same theater. Overall, Godzilla Minus One is the superior movie. I do think the sound design in Oppenheimer is good but the in-movie experience of Godzilla Minus One is one of the best in recent memory. I would just suggest to ANYONE that is a movie buff to see this in the theater (and even in imax or dolby sound setting). YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED! This movie deserves an academy award. Top notch!
Man it took me 3 tries to see this movie. First time I went Godzilla was showing next to the Taylor Swift movie and it was so loud that Godzilla was unwatchable so I left. Went yesterday afternoon and some guy was hacking up a lung so I left again. Tried again last night and caught a 9:30 showing with 1 other person in the theater. This is an absolutely astounding movie. I laughed, I cried, I clapped and I yelled at the screen. Movie was damn near perfect. I will definitely be going again next week to see it again since they have added more shows a theaters.
As a Japanese, I am very happy that everyone overseas enjoyed the show. In Japan, there are people who say that the director's unique way of delivering lines is too much or that the Occupation Forces are not in the film at all, but most people, including myself, are happy to see the return of the Japanese Godzilla. My grandfather was a WWII veteran, and I had the opportunity to hear him talk about the war years before he died, and this film helped me understand the trauma of the main character a little. There has been some talk about the budget, but I think this budget is quite a lot in Japan. I am glad to hear that the film seems to be understood and appreciated by people overseas, even though it reflects the unique Japanese way of thinking.
The main character was supposed to be viewed as a coward and weak person He didnt feel he deserved to he happy with a family. He goes from that to saving Japan and stoping Godzilla the moment it was going to kill all his friends. It was a great arc
Few people realize that Godzilla minus One is the unofficial (very official) sequel to, (from the bombed country's perspective) Oppenheimer . This would have been much more effective as a marketing strategy than Barbenheimer. Cause and effect
Dude, I just got home from seeing this. FER SURE don't take your kids to see it. That said, it was freaking amaz-balls. I can't remember a recent movie that had more heart. This movie deserves every bit of the hype.
In most Gozilla movies, Godzilla is indifferent about people, more or less. This is a version of Godzilla that actively pursues murder. He's not just trying to walk through the city, he goes out of his way to just ruthlessly MERK innocent people. If he sees you, he chases you and kills you. I'm not exaggerating. It's a good time, but Godzilla's a bastard in this one. Also, it's subbed... But also, even the non-Godzilla parts are dark. The plot basically revolves around destruction and famine everywhere. It takes place in rubble. Ever see 8 Mile? Ya know how a movie can be 95% watching a horrible situation get worse, and then there's like 5% joy in the end... The title of the movie says it all. But, it's also sensational and really heartfelt. A really solid movie. But if your kids aren't into watching broken soldiers crumble under PTSD and crushing hopelessness, pry leave them home...lol @@softwarephil1709
The audience I sat with was great. Very little if any getting up. Kids were either glued to the movie or scared shitless and crying, so a parent would have to take them out. I honestly have no idea what they were thinking bringing a little kid in. The moment Godzilla was on screen, this kid didn't know if he should cry, shit or go blind.
My favorite part is when he attacked that cruiser after the sea mine scene. I was so captivated when i saw that some of the best special effect I have seen. No the US wouldn't bother unless Godzilla was heading toward Hawaii. Since Godzilla was only threating Tokyo it was a Good Luck guys moment.
The science is very real in this film, the final plan to destroy Godzilla really would have killed anything, decompression is very real, just look @ the Titanic sub that just imploded a few months ago
I'm noticing a lot of viewers missed the ending of the film Norco did not get away from that blast without real injury she has some kind of godzilla-like infection or mutation. You can actually see it growing in her neck right before the movie Cuts back to Godzilla
When I went to watch the movie, their was also kids but they stayed quite while 1 or 2 were on their phones, but so far the movie had my full attention. A couple sitting next to me were also enjoying it, so far great movie
I'm Japanese, but after the defeat in the war, my grandmother and grandfather taught me that we have to help each other. That was the Japanese education. There is no doubt that the defeat in the war made the Japanese people stronger. And I think I became a compassionate citizen because I realized my mistake. I can't make up for my past mistakes, but from now on, I think we should make up for them by caring and helping each other.
Why did she receive that shock wave and still only get mild injuries? Consider the black pattern on her neck that was visible for a moment, and the information that was said on the TV broadcasting the devastation in Ginza, saying that there were many pieces of Godzilla's flesh falling.
You should see the ending scene again when Koichi comes to see Noriko in the hospital. There is a stain on her neck, which seems to show why Noriko has survived the incident.
@@bushidoblues9302 Yes the mark on Noriko's neck was moving, and it implies that Noriko was regenerated (and mutated, may be) by the power of Gojira cell. Otherwise, she couldn't survive. This idea is already disclosed by the director (comment from Japan).
Well-said! I really like your final analysis of the movie. It’s like the Japanese realize that they are stronger together. A lesson to the world. Empathy for everyone.
If I had any issues with Minus One it’s that I wish the Tokyo attack lasted longer. Other than that, it’s a superb film. Speaking of callbacks, I love how the movie resurrects old ideas from both some of the best and even more overlooked films in the franchise, and makes them feel fresh (we even see Godzilla getting horribly burned and mutated, something that was only ever implied in the past). Heck, the first ten minutes felt like a better Jurassic Park movie than the actual JP films of recent years. Another user in the comments mentioned the strange radiation poisoning afflicting Noriko (regenerating?) so who knows what strange mutations could come forth from this version of Godzilla. The themes were also very poignant and nuanced and I appreciate that. Praying for a sequel because I’m burnt out by Toho just rebooting everything since Godzilla 2000 (oh how I wish that entry had a proper sequel back in the day). Also I could see it happening where Godzilla does come back remembering everything, and if they choose to do so maybe gradually develop him into being more of an anti-hero if worse monsters show up (which would also mirror the struggles felt by the Japanese military veterans).
The female MC survived due to something happening to her. it was hinted on her neck. She was probably dead but infected by Godzilla's regenerative cells. It's not just an empty Deus Ex.
So funny i think a bunch of kids left my showing too. It seem like it was a family possibly, but there is like 10 of them and they all came in as the movie was starting and stomped on the stairs super loudly. Within 10 minutes they all left and they stomped all the way down the stairs like they were jumping purposely to piss everyone off. I can't comprehend why any parents would allow their kids to be so rude.
Usually when Hollywood ‘remakes’ some classic film it completely ‘flops’ at the box office. Aka, ‘The thing’, ‘The day the earth stood still.’ Good thing Japan made this movie.
I'm Japanese, but you seem to understand the feeling of the post-war Japanese people much better and more deeply than me. I mean, you can be so sympathetic with them.
Great movie, absolutely loved it, I don't understand the people who complain about the dialog and character development, and just want to watch a giant monster destroy a city. I remember when the 2014 film came out, which I enjoyed, people complained about the lack of action and too much dialog, but a lot of the giant monster movies of the 50s 60s and 70s have that. I have Mondays off, so when I go to the movies it's on that day, and the earliest show, so I don't have to deal with other people, specially disrespectful teenagers (I saw this on Friday, just happened to be on vacation). I also knew Noriko was alive when their neighbor got the telegram, but as far as her holding on too long or being able to push Koichi, you can chalk it up to fear/adrenaline, he isn't much bigger than she is and wasn't expecting the push. She had a lot more than a bandage around her head, looked like a cast on her right arm, and bandages under her hospital gown. They could've given her bruises on her face, may be some swelling, but it is what it is. I do like the overall look of the American Godzilla a little bit more (the monster not the films) but this movie blows the others away. I wonder how the next, Godzilla X Kong will fare compared to Minus One, will it get more attention because of this movies success or will it get less because people will know it's not connected?
The reason he was apprehensive about being the father and husband to the child and woman is because of his PTSD. He isn't even sure if he is really alive anymore. And we all know, and he definitely knows that a military guy with PTSD is very dangerous, unstable, and unpredictable, and he was afraid he would end up hurting the surrogate family that he has learned to love. It was not him being an asshole.
Saw this twice at Silvercity Riverport in BC Canada. It's a shame it's not being more widely distributed but it was great to see the theatre packed almost to the brim on a Tuesday evening. Thoroughly enjoyed the film twice over despite a few places where it didn't make complete sense to me (e.g. I have trouble seeing the Japanese/US government really standing by and doing nothing to deal with a threat as serious as Godzilla despite the cold war tension - I don't see how they couldn't have just shown the Soviets "here's this gigantic monster who tore apart a fleet of our warships and levelled Ginza in an apparent thermonuclear attack so yeah sorry, we'll be carrying out massive military interdictions on this sea reptile please don't get your panties in a bunch ok?"
Man imagine no other movie series has been more ridiculed made fun of and put down than the godzilla series!!! All Godzilla movies ( outside the first) are given a one star rating maybe a star and a half!!! Imagine in its 70th aniversary winning best picture!!!! Did I get abducted and put in an alternate universe. Man imagine from Godzilla vs the Smog Monster to best picture!!!! I hope the academy goes against the grain!!! It would make my day!!!
Worth noting about this film is that the monster appears in daylight mostly and is well lit as opposed to the other USA made releases where the monster scenes are usually in the dark and difficult to see the cgi in greater detail and I suspect that is done to avoid having the cgi appear weak. This film does not hide the cgi and is rather good.
Noriko survived because of Godzilla cells. When Godzilla was attacked, his body flew off, which was then absorbed into the body of injured people. Godzilla cells are highly regenerative that can save a dying person, but that person will eventually transform into Godzilla. Noriko was able to survive with relatively minor damege, but everybody doesn't know how long she can be a human. I looked a black G mark on her neck on last scene, and expected it won't be happy end.
@@roxannekean6025Actually, it would qualify under it, because Asians do fall under ‘underrepresented groups’ and the standards are based around American standards for underrepresented groups, not Japanese
I agree. Keep children at home where they belong. I saw the Japanese language version of Godzilla and there were only 8 people in the theater (just the way I like it). I plan to see The Boy and the Crane in Japanese to avoid children.
I'm a Japanese and a movie fun. I'm glad that Americans are interested in Japanese movies, but I'm surprised that they care so much about the budget. And I was also surprised that Godzilla Minus One was a big hit in the US, which is sensitive to political correctness.
I have a theory about the neighbouring nations not coming to Japan's aid with regards to this intense threat: think about the time- no internet, and 40's film footage can look brutally primitive/bad (meaning Godzilla may not look at all believable via film). Plus, coming out of the "great war", there was still a lot of distrust and propaganda flowing through the world (this was the war that proved to all nations just how powerful of a tool media manipulation could be), so distrust between nations going into the cold war was ramping up really quickly. It makes perfect sense to me that other nations wouldn't be so quick to trust or believe a bunch of errant reports of a "gigantic fire breathing reptile" trouncing through Ginza, smashing everything in it's wake... even if they knew that it could be a possibility, especially since they likely wouldn't have really cared anyways. "Look at what trouble Japan just caused... they can deal with their issues by themselves and rot" etc. The one point you brought up about Japan's own government not coming to the rescue (so to speak) could also be attributed down to pure shame from losing the war, not to mention that Japan was severely disarmed, so they likely couldn't have done very much, since they had no real arsenal by that time. The only real flaw in my logic is that the U.S. was there en masse helping Japan rebuild and likely would've been able to physically see the threat; though the idea that the tension with the Soviets could definitely hinder any real aid they could provide in the region is somewhat believable, so that explanation via the story also holds up (if a bit weakly). Great review overall... and great film! 😉
OK>>> I Thought 20:48 Takashi was in the Movie, as the Dorky Nerd Scientist, as soon as I saw him I thought that.. but I was wrong>> Did anybody else think that??? come-on.. Anybody???!!
he wasnt an asshole, he was a kamikaze pilot and somehow convinced himself that killing others by suicide wasnt the best option for him. he was severly conflicted but not an asshole.
The exact same thing happened when I went to see this film in a UK cinema, a bunch of teens got up halfway through the film and walked out. They obviously don't have the head space for a decent film, and have short attention span of a TIk Tok viewer
I think Nariko did disintegrate.. And she regenerated somehow thanks to Godzillas Radiation. Did you notice the moving spot on her neck? My experience at the theatre was excellent Sunday afternoon. Took my lil brother, and girlfriend. We all loved it! It's as good if not better then Shin Godzilla.
I was expecting more scars and blood on her too, but that mark must mean she regenerated very quickly. I have no idea what's in store for sequel with that. Superhumans??
I am trying to figure out where the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima occurs in the "Godzilla Minus One" timeline. The nuclear testing in the Pacific by the U.S. occurred between 1946-1948.We know that Godzilla makes his first appearance in this film prior to this nuclear testing and the end of the war. He makes his appearance shortly after the kamikaze pilot aborts his mission and lands his plane on an island and falsely claiming that his plane had mechanical issues. This is when Godzilla makes his first appearance in the film but he has already shown himself to the locals who live on the island. Godzilla is already big and huge but it is implied that the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima had not occurred yet.How did he get so big and monstrous if the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima had not occurred yet? I believe that all the nuclear testing on the atomic bomb prior to the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima occurred on remote desert land in the U.S. Godzilla would have been nowhere to found there so he could not have received nuclear contamination from there. How did he get so big prior to the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima? I understand how he got more powerful after the war because the U.S. was doing all that nuclear testing in the Pacific from 1946-1948 and the fallout from the resulting radiation is what caused Godzilla to become more powerful and resulted in him obtaining his atomic breath capabilities.
For my movie experiance, we had a handful of Japanese families with kids attending. At first, they kept talking, then the Tokyo scene hit, and everyone was quiet. You can hear a hair fall the rest of the movie, I swear.
Hey ! I discovered your channel last week and i already watched almost all of your videos because they are so entertaning ! I discovered a lof of cool movies and new things on japanese culture and that's a statement on how good you're channel is because i'm also a weeb :) The editing could be improved but overhaul this is a really cool channel !
I'd highly recommend going to theaters with stricter guidelines for respecting other audience members like Alamo Drafthouse or watching it early in the morning.
I think you’re absolutely right! I have not seen it yet but I am so excited that is coming out to the uk do you know if a picture book a bout the monster movie will come out and in English and will a dvd in English be available soon?! And I am collecting all the information and I have done a lot of research on the monster movie I hope to go to see the movie vey soon!
I feel like I’m in another dimension, because I would have never thought people would be having a Godzilla movie as movie of the year; and that makes me happy.
Lol good times.
It won't get it even if it's that good ... For political and jealousy reasons in American Hollywood
@@avalond1193 good point! I usually don't like the movies that win anyway.
What a wonderful exchange.
@@BabystarNoodle I agree. Great exchange and it's nice to hear these accounts.
Japanese WW2 atrocities is reflected by Godzilla?
Beautiful words. Post-war Japan is very interesting.
I saw it Sunday. I love it. Real people with flaws working together. Real friendship, love, and caring.

Definitely should get a nomination. They don’t make movies like this anymore. This encouraged me to see the directors other works.
Unfortunately i believe as much as it gets praised, they didn’t meet a stupid deadline to submit
It CAN'T be nominated because Oscar rules have changed. In order to be nominated, it has to have diversity--1) at least one gay or trans 2) strong female characters 3) any other skin tone except white.

That's fascinating, really confirms what an excellent job they did with the period details, (excellent all around really. )
That's fascinating! Thanks for the information! It adds more depth to the film as well!
@@hob976 Thank you for your comment.I would be happy if it would be received favorably as a material story.
Yeah, I think it would be too tragic to have her die.
and this movie deserved an emotional happy ending after all that so I don't think it was a weakness.

Music was it's own character in this movie.
@franksengatti5499 I don’t think it will pull off a Parasite, but that would be amazing if it does. Let’s see if it even gets nominated first.
It can't even be nominated because of all the stupid WOKE rules that REQUIRE diversity.
And kudos for the homage to Ikufube. Original theme music was one of the many high points
My takeaway from the girl surviving at the end was regenerating her injuries due to her exposure to Godzilla. You see the black trail of radiation poison going up her neck.
I was wondering over that possibility as well. One wonders what side-affects this Godzilla has.
Oh wow! That makes more sense now! Good catch

Well… I’ve got something to tell you.
@@wannabehistorian371 I am pleased they won, old comment here, but I was happy they were honored.
Among several things they did:
- Read _every single subtitle_ on screen for about a minute.
The same kid with the seat, right near the end of the big silent moment near the end, he goes (and since its quiet its loud even though he tried being quiet so it was kinda funny but kinda killed the tension)
"Why is it so quiet" then BOOM action.
And the best was a guy at the start goes "WHAT THIS IS IN CHINESE IM NOT WATCHING THIS"
As his friend group shut him up throughout the film. That first outburst was the worst. His friends kept him in check.
But my audience definitely took me out of the film for as much as i loved it. So i plan to go see it again early in the morning lol
Lol! Your experience sounded funny at least. Mine was just annoying. I plan on seeing it again, too, hopefully during the week when Noone is there!

I disagree with calling the lead character an a**hole when he allowed a random woman and child to live off of him for years . Nobody is owed a relationship, and even though he really cared for her I don't see that as a fair characterization of him

The audience I sat with was great. Very little if any getting up. Kids were either glued to the movie or scared shitless and crying, so a parent would have to take them out.

I'm Japanese, but after the defeat in the war, my grandmother and grandfather taught me that we have to help each other. That was the Japanese education. There is no doubt that the defeat in the war made the Japanese people stronger. And I think I became a compassionate citizen because I realized my mistake. Why did she receive that shock wave and still only get mild injuries? Consider the black pattern on her neck that was visible for a moment, and the information that was said on the TV broadcasting the devastation in Ginza, saying that there were many pieces of Godzilla's flesh falling.
Yeah, I realize that now. Apparently, that's why she was able to survive and regenerate. I love this film!

Praying for a sequel or two myself, but I'm kind of betting the next film would probably be Godzilla taking on another monster.
@@slimslamfl Most likely.
This was great movie had me in tears.
10:10 I think u missed the ending where there’s a black mark on Noriko, she was infected with Gojira.
Bridezilla!
I clapped at the end. Movie made me tear up a few times. Best picture of the year in my opinion and best Godzilla movie ever.
We fell in love with all of the characters.
You nailed every point!
Honestly this film might hurt Godzilla x Kong. People are now spoiled and will want something on this level. I however will still see it.

Lesson learned!
22:42 GREAT POINT>> and I thought that "The Whole Movie, Could Have Just Been a Bad Dream!!">>
He’s saying “Where is my Academy Award” LOL 😂 Very good movie I might add.
Lol
Sadly, this movie can't even be nominated because it has NO diversity--a new and STUPID Oscar requirement.
@@roxannekean6025 If that's true, the Oscars are over. I'm no big Godzilla fan, but I notice the wild rave reviews this is getting. It's hard to miss.
Right on. Thanks for sharing.
I'm a Japanese and a movie fun. I'm glad that Americans are interested in Japanese movies, but I'm surprised that they care so much about the budget. And I was also surprised that Godzilla Minus One was a big hit in the US, which is sensitive to political correctness.
Thank you for clarifying on the healing factor because I was wondering why Godzilla was able to withstand tank missiles but not a sea-mine.
Me and a friend saw it yesterday. We were the only ones in the theater. My friend is a little chatty, going alone next time.
I have a theory about the neighbouring nations not coming to Japan's aid with regards to this intense threat:
think about the time- no internet, and 40's film footage can look brutally primitive/bad (meaning Godzilla may not look at all believable via film).
I missed it in the cinema because it only showed it the one time in the UK and I’d go another time 🤦🏾♂️ loved the film tho. Great reviews mate.
That annoying friend we all have them! Me sister ruined The Sixth Sense for me saying Bruce is dead all along. Still don’t forgive her.
Stupid is as stupid does for those who left because of subtitles.
Lol seriously
Yes Godzilla minus one should be awarded it’s a fantastic movie from Godzilla minus one English fan
I just saw it today and loveed it made me tear up with nostalgia
OK>>> I Thought 20:48 Takashi was in the Movie, as the Dorky Nerd Scientist, as soon as I saw him I thought that.. but I was wrong>> Did anybody else think that??? come-on.. Anybody???!!
I REALLY CAN NOT WAIT TILL I CAN ACQUIRE THIS ASTOUNDING MASTERPIECE FOR MY OWN!!
Not a jet. This was World War II and for the most part there were no jets. Just prop planes.
Your right! Thanks
Minus One and Spiderverse have been my favorite films this year. Both had me thinking about them for days after leaving the theater.
AWESOME FILM!
Oh no...there goes Tokyo...go go godzilla.
he wasnt an asshole, he was a kamikaze pilot and somehow convinced himself that killing others by suicide wasnt the best option for him. he was severly conflicted but not an asshole.
By the end of the film, he turned out to be a great hero!
The exact same thing happened when I went to see this film in a UK cinema, a bunch of teens got up halfway through the film and walked out. They obviously don't have the head space for a decent film, and have short attention span of a TIk Tok viewer
Haha so true
I think Nariko did disintegrate.. And she regenerated somehow thanks to Godzillas Radiation. Did you notice the moving spot on her neck? My experience at the theatre was excellent Sunday afternoon. Took my lil brother, and girlfriend. We all loved it! It's as good if not better then Shin Godzilla.
I was expecting more scars and blood on her too, but that mark must mean she regenerated very quickly. I have no idea what's in store for sequel with that. Superhumans??
@@TheNewFlutistremember what happened to the infected in Shin...
Cg Goji will never top suit Goji
For my movie experiance, we had a handful of Japanese families with kids attending. At first, they kept talking, then the Tokyo scene hit, and everyone was quiet. You can hear a hair fall the rest of the movie, I swear.
My theater experience was quiet.
It was literally just me, my sister, and two other people.
Im happy someone else said it but when Zilla charged his breath in Ginza I was like “Oh godzill think he Goku now😂”
Hey ! I discovered your channel last week and i already watched almost all of your videos because they are so entertaning ! I discovered a lof of cool movies and new things on japanese culture and that's a statement on how good you're channel is because i'm also a weeb :)
The editing could be improved but overhaul this is a really cool channel !
Thanks, I really appreciate that! Are there any videos you'd like me to make next?
Badly edited as in the sound? Because visuals in videos are made impossible by youtube's copyright system.
Thank GODzilla that those kids got up and left.
I'd highly recommend going to theaters with stricter guidelines for respecting other audience members like Alamo Drafthouse or watching it early in the morning.
10:05 L take on the Noriko scene that touched me
Nice review….btw Your pic of the hot headed drunk guy…wasn’t the hot headed drunk guy…that was “the kid”
😅
I think you’re absolutely right! I have not seen it yet but I am so excited that is coming out to the uk do you know if a picture book a bout the monster movie will come out and in English and will a dvd in English be available soon?! And I am collecting all the information and I have done a lot of research on the monster movie I hope to go to see the movie vey soon!
Oscar goes to Godzilla
There were no jets in the movie. Learn the differents between a jet and a airplane.
I don’t think a sequel will be as effective, I think this should be a standalone film, its perfect
I can't figure out a way to follow this one up either. It should be a standalone that we always will keep in high regard.
