Seriously. If they added film grain and audio pops to the film like in Godzilla '54, it would of brought this film to another level of epicness. Minus color really is the definitive version to watch this film.
I was curious how they would convey the menace of the bright blue of the heat ray here, and the way they did it was by having it totally blow out the film grain! Worked really well imo
There was a little extra grain added. The pops would do nothing but distract, that’s not necessary. This version of the movie is also my favorite, I love it the way it is.
I’m just upset that this film wasn’t nominated for more than just special effects. The acting and story alone are award worthy! Plus on budget of only $15 million, says a LOT without spending a LOT.
The Academy Awards are such a "show" now I don't care. I care more about reviews, specifically Viewer reviews, not Reviewers. -1.0 was my top film of the 2020s so far to date.... and it leaves MASSIVE boots to fill if you want to dethrone it.

Oppenheimer kinda exists.. but I honestly think Nolans aversion to VFX is holding back the potential of his vision at this point.. ..i.e.. the flash from the blast isn't centered on the top of the tower.. ..or the over and/or underuse of blast cannons for 'practical effects'.. ..the victory speech scene could have been much more effective, blending screams with cheers, instead of just a few obviously make-up based effects with a single charcoal torso he steps through.. the chapel or whatever they were in could have immediately started burning because the thermal pulse, then the Mach stem blows away the structure and the ashen people with it.. ..but noooo, can't do that practically, so we'll just not do it.. ..inception was the peak of his marrying visuals with story.. some of his most iconic shots have some cg element.. I just think he needs to get over it.. also, couldn't he film large format digitally and silently, letting his actors act without an imax imaxxing a foot away from his face.. like, get over romanticizing film and making movies way more expensive, time consuming and complex to produce.. I mean, how much were the prints alone? And I'm sure Nolan took 10m+ salary.. ..in this economy.. ..I mean come on.. hes lucky Barbie carried his numbers.. he needed a meme to get the numbers he did, i actually believe that..
Saw it 5 times in color and saw Minus One once. I knew it would be good, but didn't think for a second that it would be even more epic in B&W. Love this movie
Yes, my son loves Godzilla movies. Until this one, I was like that was entertaining....but with this one for me it's THE BEST of them all. Just an amazing film! Very emotional and exceptional!
Just seen Godzilla Minus One Minus Color... thank you Bushido Blues. Took me long enough but finally made it and watched it on the big screen as it was meant to be watched... and it is absolutely everything you said it was and more. This film has definitely taken me on a Nostalgia and Emotional ride I haven't been this emotional with a film in a long time. I even got teary-eyed for a few scenes, especially once the Authentic Godzilla theme song and Godzilla roar ripped through the theater sound system... I felt that Godzilla in this film was a terror or a reflection of the sins of war... and Noriko and Shikishima are what true humanity is during times of struggle and hardship... Godzilla Minus One Minus Color were absolutely perfect in my opinion and the Minus Color was the Icing on the cake...🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼👍🏽
Both versions are beautiful, but the B&W version is far more dramatic, terrifying, and horrific. The breakdown scene between Shikishima and Noriko hit harder in this version, just as the boat chase scene with Godzilla swimming after them! I can't get this film out of my head. Even listening to the soundtrack breaks me. What a masterpiece.
One final comment I would be remiss if I didn't mention the score which is INCREDIBLE!! It moves through you and pulls you in to the moment that you are watching.... this film excels on so many different levels.... cinematography, acting, music, message....it's definitely a MUST SEE........................
I was actually awestruck watching this movie. I have told numerous people how great this movie is. I highly recommend watching it. I could only hope Hollywood learns from this how they are failing. Unfortunately the arrogance in Hollywood is very thick and I’m not sure they are willing to learn anything from someone outside their circle of comfort. Look at all the failures that are coming from the US film industry.
I saw Minus Color a few days ago in its theatre run. It was my first time watching Minus One, and I feel incredibly lucky that I waited to experience it for the first time as the black and white version. Incredible...
Man I’ve watched all your videos about this film, and I can’t agree with you more! Godzilla will always hold a special place in my heart, it was something that my father and I watched together when I was a kid. Now I’m 43 and he’s 73, and this movie brought us right back to that same feeling. This is a once in a generation film and will likely never have something this special again. What a privilege and thanks for posting
I have watched the color version of the movie four times already. However, when I watched the black-and-white version, I did not miss the colors at all. Takashi Yamazaki and his team did an excellent job. For instance, when Godzilla charged up during the Ginza attack, the emitting blue glow was white instead of grey, which shows the care put into it. I hope that the movie's release will include both versions.
I've only ever seen 5 foreign films in the theatre. The first one was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The next one was Minus One 3 times and Minus Color once. I'm still considering seeing Minus Color again.
Watching Godzilla minusone in black-and-white really took the film to a whole other level to me. It feels timeless When you watch it in black-and-white so that will be how I will watch it going forward
This is the BEST FILM I have seen.... not sure about the black and white because I have seen it 5 times in color so when I did see the black and white version it took me awhile to make that transition. I must say that Godzilla is more terrifying and menacing in black and white, the characters more intense and yes, every time I see this film, I get emotional, and it really moves me. I can relate to Koichi, the struggles, trying to redeem himself and how all the characters create a bond which is heartwarming. You don't see that in monster movies. They use Godzilla to face their fears, to move beyond the struggles, and gut-wrenching feelings of hopelessness and despair. Tomorrow, I will see it for the 7th time in 4DX which I have never experienced. LOVED IT
Man this was a sweet viewing experience you had -- being in an old theater, spending time with the owner, sharing the love of this great film. Thanks for the video! Reminds me of the good old days in my time.
I didn't know there was a color version and I watched it last week. I am so glad I watched the B&W version, it took me back to when I first watched Godzilla on a 13 inch tv in the 1980s as a kid. My 7 year old nephew got into the movie, hooked.
It comes through. I'm buying Hulu this month just for the FX Shogun series. I'm stoked out of my mind. And afterward, I'm gonna come looking for the BushidoBlues take on it, like a cherry on top.@@bushidoblues9302
I loved Minus Color, but I think the color version still has merit too. Remember, the director and the crew (wardrobe, set design, etc.) all work to put the scenes together with color in mind. Some of the thematic tones are muted or lost in B&W. I want both on my Blu-Ray and to have the choice of which to watch.
Not 21 times, but I watched it 4 times. Helped that there weren't really other movies playing that I wanted to rewatch in the theaters at the time. We need more good solid entertaining movies, not movies made by committee checking off boxes.
I'll always be glad I got to see both versions in the theater. I'm 58 and have pined for a redo of the original; a 1940's based Godzilla where is a monster and a metaphor. I loved the kids stuff as a kid, but the original is more of a grown up movie; with a message on about using weapons of war. And Godzilla -1, well it is a stand out movie that is grown up, and yet not kid unfriendly. And again Godzilla is not just a monster, but a metaphor, and the messages about forgiveness, survival, and respect for life are just well done.
Thanks for the upload...Saw Minus one but; the "Minus Color" adds a whole new dimension...As someone that watched everything in B&W because Color TV's weren't invented yet...It reminds me of my childhood..
Thank you for bringing so much attention to this film. I appreciate it so much! I am an old fan of Godzilla and Gojira was always my favorite. I don't make it out to the movies very often any more, so will be getting both color and minus color! Can't wait!
I’m fortunate enough to have had the chance to see both versions of the film! Both were amazing! I liked the black and white because it reminds me of the original but my wife likes the color better! Great review, would love to see more Godzilla content!
I wasn’t aware that they were releasing the new Godzilla in black and white. I’m 70 and in the town I grew up in,Clearwater,Fla,we had 3 theatres in town. The Capitol, the Carib, and the Ritz. The Capitol and Ritz were about a block away from each other with the Ritz being the older, smaller one. It was more ornate and that was the theatre that always had double and triple features on the weekends. I saw all the Japanese SciFi films there. The original Godzilla and my favorites, the Mysterians and Battle In Outer Space. Even today I love Black and white films like Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon. I’m going to see if the black and white Godzilla is playing in Fort Worth and go see it. Thanks for the video.
Unfortunately only been able to see Minus One twice due to my work schedule but man am I glad that 2nd time was in black and white. You could now vividly see the damage Godzilla was taking in the film. And it really does just have a much darker tone in line with the original and it feeling like a horror movie now is very fitting The original Godzilla is essentially a Japanese ghost story in tone and through it's allegory. You encounter the supernatural early on and get away. But it will come for you again and again In Godzilla you may survive the monster's initial attack. But will you survive when it comes back You might survive the atomic bomb. But can you survive the radiation the "monster" that will come for you in the end To experience and survive the horror is to suffer. Will you be able to persevere. To live Also side note. Noticed that the musical score that played during the scenes with the fighter jet sounded extremely similar to music from Nausica of the Valley of the Wind. Perhaps an homage to Miyazaki who is known for his love of planes and his films that have helped Japanese movies remain relevant in foreign markets
I haven't seen this film, I'm a Godzilla fan since I was a kid. love the 1954 movie and the one with Raymond Burr. Just saw the follow up to the original Godzilla. the ones in between the 60's were okay, to much kid friendly. but the recent ones those are back to the original theme of Godzilla. I love to see the latest. Just love Godzilla.
When I was 11 years old I got a new guitar that I was expecting for Christmas. My dream come true. That's what Godzilla Minus One is like as a great gift. Unbeknownst to me, my parents also got me a very nice reel to reel tape recorder to go with it. Godzilla - 1 / - Color is that unexpected treat that I will cherish now as part of the whole experience this masterpiece brings.
I really appreciate your making this video, I only had a chance to see the color version and after seeing the clips you have shown I can imagine how great it would have been to see the BW version in the theater.I do hope that when the movie gets released to streaming or DVD that the BW version is included.
I just saw it monday(yesterday), which is now my fourth total viewing and its STILL such a striking story/movie. Will be buying whatever they decide to put out for this movie. The soundtrack seemed boosted in this version, and the whole look worked really well in B & W. Two big thumbs up..still.
Loved this movie, and have already seen it 3 times. I was wondering if it would be worth another screening for the b&w version; you just convinced me to see it again!
Watched this with my 10 yr old son, and even he said this was the best movie he's seen in the last 2 years. I was awestruck. It's a masterpiece of film. Forget it being a Godzilla movie, it's a great movie period.
Man, I agree with your commentary 100%! I saw the color version first - but the B&W version was WAY better for all the reasons you mentioned. And I felt that HEARING the film in Japanese and having to read the English subtitles made me pay attention to the dialog even more! All in all, the B&W version feels like a more SERIOUS film- and if they HAD originally released it in B&W (with English subtitles) it may have been nominated for even MORE academy awards (Best Foreign Film?) simply because it had more gravitas.
I'm an old coot first-round-draft Gen-X'er, and also an old school photographer (Nikon F100), and as such I have a deep appreciation of all things B&W, be it movies, photos, coffee, cookies, etc., and I'm always heartened to hear others speak so admiringly of it, like our narrator here. I made my teen niece and nephew watch Casablanca, and some promo clips of this movie, and their response was "really? why would you like this old stuff?! Color is SO much better!" And I gotta confess, it saddened me more than I expected to hear this; I fear a day when there are not enough people left who appreciate B&W to assure that all the beautiful media in that format gets the preservation lave and care it so richly deserves... Thanks for making this, great upload!
I was really grateful to see this in B&W, I've been out of the loop & assumed I missed the whole theatrical release, so -C felt like destiny. I think it works to make it a better film in general, but there some scenes that I am dying to see in color & would have loved to have seen in proper Imax. Basically everything in the water.
Just got out of the theater. Hadn’t seen the color, nor any spoilers except word of mouth from my friends and random people. I didn’t even know it was a special screening until after I sat down to watch it. Now I’m diving into YT and am so stoked that I got to see it as I did. Minus color and minus the internet spoiling it for me.
In the movie theres a part showing godzillas destruction in military style film. It is a map of Godzilla's last sighting. You can clearly see the patrol ships vector Godzilla towards Japan.
I am so glad you showed a scene from The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. That 1953 movie was some of the inspiration for the original 1954 Godzilla. In fact, the first appearance of Godzilla on Odo island paid tribute to the Beast film. The way the soldier used a spotlight to illuminate the monster and the way Godzilla picked up people and threw them was right out of the 1953 stop action movie.
I got see the color versión of this in the theater, and am very fortunate for that, but clips of the Minus Color cut look equally impressive with the tone much darker. Cant wait to see this too.
Ive seen the movie 4 times, but Black and White is the one where Godzilla actually gave me goosebumps. Epic and horrifying is probably the only way I can describe it. Especially the Takao fight and Odo scene. Do yourself a massive favor and once it releases check it out in B/W
Saw it twice in color and Minus Color yesterday. I do prefer it without, but I want them to put it out with both so I can enjoy both, depending on the mood and who is with me. Instant classic, masterpiece.
Saw this for the 3rd time yesterday. It’s the first movie I have ever seen more than twice in a theater. It is now in my TOP 5 all time films! A masterpiece!
Was that Bernardsville NEW JERSEY? My hometown? Wow, is that theatre still around? Is that the one by the triangle where i used to play Centipede in the pizzeria?
This is the way this film should have been marketed in the first place. Black and White draws you into a story much more, they capture your attention to the story and the craftmanship of the movie. Godzilla '54 became a classic because of the story itself and that it was in b & w. Think of Citizen Kane, Schindler's List, The Third Man, or the Maltese Falcon to mention a few if they were in color...oh what an awful thought! For those of us that grew up when TV was only in b & w, we can appreciate the format.
I saw Minus Color in theatres last night. Saw in color twice before. This movie hit much harder in B&W. Even though i knew all the plot elements and were anticipating each one, the acting and emotion came thru even stronger. No color to distract me, instead i took in all the facial expressions, body language etc. godzilla "charging up" looked amazing as well in B&W. AMAZING. This movie should have been nominated for Best Picture. Seriously, its that good
Black and white movies are great when done right like Schindler's List. I would watch Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color and it would be just as good if not better as the colored version because it's set in a time period where black and white makes sense.
Saw minus one both versions in 4d and I gotta say it might be the greatest movie ever to hit 4d theaters. Can't express enough to anyone reading this. You need to see this movie in 4d!!! It's an experience like no other
I have been a film fan for over 60 years. I like all kinds of film, including black and white movies. Always have. It makes me happy that young people who used to look down on B&W films as "old" are embracing the concept, and it pleases me even more that it is happening with this film, which I consider the greatest Godzilla (and Kaiju) film ever made.
I felt like the early island scenes seemed grainier, and I thought maybe they were reflecting the film quality of the 40s. And then the picture became crisper during the 50s.
I watch the original Godzilla probably once a year. It really is a great film and I have been waiting for a return to a black and white Godzilla. Good on them. Rock on Godzilla !!!!!!!!
I saw this for the first time as Minus Color, and I cannot imagine watching it a different way. I really hope I get a chance to watch it again. The last film I left the theatre feeling so enthralled, was "Children of Men". Godzilla Minus One is cinema perfection.
I have been trying to think of films that give the same feeling as Godzilla Minus One and I thought of Guns of Navarone, Jaws and even Rogue One and Dunkirk. But you are right, Children of Men does absolutely share the same vibe of fighting against a monstrous enemy with nearly no hope. The only way towards victory is through unity and heart wrenching sacrifice.
This is the sleeper hit of the 2023 and I think this will be the definitive Kaiju film talked about for years to come. As close to a masterpiece as a Kaiju film can be since 1954. I enjoyed Minus Color, but I do prefer the color version more. I just hope the video release will come with both versions and I hope the streaming providers will offer both versions too.
I'm in japan right at this very moment. I watched it in a 4k theater that sprays you with water and shakes the seats and sprays smoke. Literally the best movie experience I've ever had.
Saw Minus One five times, Minus Color three times. It's an amazingly great film (writing, direction, acting, cinematography, score, visual effects, sound all A+), and Minus Color is just stunning visually. And the emotion of the film is so powerful. I love the 1954 Gojira, but I feel Minus One may actually be a better overall film. I can't wait to add both versions to my home film library.
Godzilla shall live forever in cinema as the father an entirely new type of cinema. Is this the start of a new series of fantastic godzilla movies? One hopes so. In the immortal words of Raymond Burr, "The things he has taught us, remain."
Godzilla minus one was incredible. So good that I think it may have become close to if not my top Godzilla movie (still have not watched the original). With the idea of the film and they made Godzilla a horror monster again, I can't think of any other movie that would be truly worthy of being remade in black and white. I personally don't use DVD's much anymore, but if one comes out with the ability to swap back and forth between color variations, I will be getting it no question. A film so great that I think the only real film that beats in in the long run would have to be the original.
B&W is creates Drama. Color doesn't. Young film makers used to say they were waiting until they were good enough to film in B&W to make epic dramatic moments of drama with carefully positioned lights. Color diffuses attention. B&W focused it by downplaying distractions.
I watched this Minus COlor version with my cousin just the other day...and we were both like "Wow!! This looks like old World War 2 footage!" With the cruisers and battleships...insane level of craft given to this film.
Just saw Minus Color last night and WHAT A FILM!!! I caught it on the last day and haven't seen the color version, and I don't know if I even want to see the color version now. The score is also one of the best I've ever heard, absolutely perfect.
I saw it two days ago. I missed the color version but got lucky and saw Minus One the last day it was shown in my theater. I was mesmerized by the the kind of story being told--from the viewpoint of ordinary soldiers who were running low on supplies and then ordinary citizens who lost everythiing and struggled to survive. This was not the standard monster movie but a hopeful story about human life: being able to live regardless of physical hardships and despite knowledge of ineluctable death. Instead of being the main actor Godzilla in this movie was used as a theme--a terrifying dread that loomed in the background of everyone's lives. As the movie focussed on everyday struggles, Godzilla was transmuted from sci-fi monster into an emblem of universal fear: the war was still palpable and continued to be waged in China and the Korean peninsula, friction between USSR and USA threatened nuclear armageddon, and what happened during war revealed that psychological death was just as deadly. Also, the story veered from previous monster films by empowering ordinary citizens to rise up when their government dissembled--resembling Seven Samurai and Rashomon more than Godzilla. Despite requiring three hankies, Minus One is now my favorite movie of the sci-fi genre.
I just got to see this movie finally two nights ago for the very first time. In my area, the only version showing is the black and white version. So my first experience with this movie was in black and white and it was absolutely incredible to have that for myself. This film is near perfection and scratched a huge nostalgia itch for me as my first Godzilla movie I ever saw was the very first, which is obviously black and white. So it was like seeing Godzilla for the very first time as though I was a kid again. I almost don’t know if I want to even try watching it in color now that I have this connection between the two films for myself. I gotta say, this is easily my favorite Godzilla movie now, hands down, and one of my favorite movies in general. One of those that I can just watch over and over and never get bored of it.
It was phenomenal in B&W. It took away the low budget VFX feel and helped the composition of the scenes to be a lot more focused for what is more important in the scene. It felt like a complete film. Not just a monster movie.
I count myself as one of the lucky ones that have only seen this move in B&W. I've gone back and watched clips in color and glad this is the only version I know. Can't wait for this to come out on DVD!
I was lucky enough to see G-1-Color this last weekend. I hadn't seen the original version since it was here and gone in a blink. As the credits were rolling, I thought to myself "There's no way I think I can ever bring myself to see the original movie.....Minus Color is a MASTERPIECE!" Of course the story, characters, score, etc were all amazing, but the way they engineered that *LOOK* for Minus Color was just mind blowing! This is THE definitive Godzilla -1 for me. :)
I also haven't been to the theater since the early 80's. I'd wait 6 months until the VHS was available to rent then I saw whatever it was. And still do that but with uhd blurays then I see it
I wish they could have left the scene when his back spine start to glow and pop up in blue (a la Sin City) in color because that was the only scene I preferred in color. What an amazing film and the first film I saw twice in the theatre since Ed Wood. Great in color, amazing in B&W.
I saw this with my grandma, because I can’t drive. We both loved it immensely and I didn’t even know there was a different version. I love that whenever Godzilla uses his atomic breath is the only time you see color. It’s a faint ethereal pink, that beautifully displays, his other worldly power in comparison to man. The black and white also captures the aesthetic of post World War II Japan, beautifully. I also love when the civilians are planning, how to combat Godzilla it’s explained with simplistic detail and physical props. This movie has definitely earned all the accolades it’s received. the other hand Universal’s Godzilla, X Kong, the new Empire looks bat shit insane, So insane that if it’s not taken seriously, it might be the most entertaining movie of the year. Hell in Godzilla versus Kong, Kong finds an ax and a charging station for it. You can’t tell me that’s not hilarious.😂 Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One are amazing while Universal’s Godzilla is simply entertaining.
I am really glad I went to see this movie without color. I can’t remember how long it has been since I watched a monster movie that truly inspired awe in everyone in the theater watching. I swear everyone in that theater (maybe 10-20 people) came out of the room with the biggest smile.
And Raymond Burr 😂
was hoping they would have added on or two lines from the 56 Raymond Burr version.
They did, it’s awesome
I’m just upset that this film wasn’t nominated for more than just special effects. The acting and story alone are award worthy! Plus on budget of only $15 million, says a LOT without spending a LOT.
It's Such a crime that it wasn't nominated for Best Foreign film.
The Academy Awards are such a "show" now I don't care.
I care more about reviews, specifically Viewer reviews, not Reviewers.
-1.0 was my top film of the 2020s so far to date.... and it leaves MASSIVE boots to fill if you want to dethrone it.
The Academy is just a group of elite Hollywood types that jerk each other off. The people know Minus One was hands down the best movie of 2023
nobody cares. the Nominations dont matter
Should have won best picture, period.. just how they made the film so economically and it looks so good.. the director was direct report for every VFX artist.. ..I dunno.. maybe not.. Saw it 5 times in color and saw Minus One once. I knew it would be good, but didn't think for a second that it would be even more epic in B&W. Love this movie
I wanted to see it again and its not in any of my local theaters
Saw it 3 times in color and once in the B&W....holy shite....the audiences kept getting bigger and bigger!
bro how do i watch it? not available in any theatres yet!
@@asefaqtab3293 It was out in the US from November 29th to February 7th.
Yes, my son loves Godzilla movies. Until this one, I was like that was entertaining....but with this one for me it's THE BEST of them all. Just an amazing film! Very emotional and exceptional!
"Goodzlla Minus One"...

I think we all got "Teary Eyed"...and it's great
Agreed

Both versions are beautiful, but the B&W version is far more dramatic, terrifying, and horrific. The breakdown scene between Shikishima and Noriko hit harder in this version, just as the boat chase scene with Godzilla swimming after them! I can't get this film out of my head. Even listening to the soundtrack breaks me. What a masterpiece.
Welcome in. Akira Ifukube’s 1954 score has haunted me for decades. So glad it’s back.
One final comment I would be remiss if I didn't mention the score which is INCREDIBLE!! It moves through you and pulls you in to the moment that you are watching.... this film excels on so many different levels.... cinematography, acting, music, message....it's definitely a MUST SEE........................

Thank you! And that's so great you got to experience this movie with your father!
I seriously saw this by accident. Didn't know it was a special edition. I am sooo glad I saw it.
I wasn’t expecting the monochrome version to be better, but it was by far. The black and white version was beyond better.

This is excellence in film making. Making entertaining and artistic treasures.
It really fits the film. I didn't miss the color at all. Godzilla was even more terrifying than in color. I fully understand Shikishima's fear.
I've only ever seen 5 foreign films in the theatre. The first one was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The next one was Minus One 3 times and Minus Color once. I'm still considering seeing Minus Color again.

Do it, has a different vibe!
I've seen Minus One four times, and Minus Color once. For me, it does NOT get old.
I'm partially colorblind. I can now see the burns and scars on Godzilla that everyone was talking about!
LOVED IT
I mean, its another excuse to watch this masterpiece again.
Exactly!
Man this was a sweet viewing experience you had -- being in an old theater, spending time with the owner, sharing the love of this great film. Thanks for the video! Reminds me of the good old days in my time.
Thank you! I crave the old movie experience!
I didn't know there was a color version and I watched it last week. I am so glad I watched the B&W version, it took me back to when I first watched Godzilla on a 13 inch tv in the 1980s as a kid. My 7 year old nephew got into the movie, hooked.
Love this. You're bringin a lot of heart to this little "Toho-centric" corner of RUclips. This channel's becoming a real gem.
Thank you! Just sharing what I love!
Watched it 2 times in color, once in B&W. LOVED IT. I grew up w/ Godzilla & this movie is what I knew all along what a Godzilla movie could be.
MASTERPIECE!!!
Love it in color, enjoyed it in black & white, hoping the dvd/bluray release is a double disc to include both versions!
Thanks for the upload...Saw Minus one but; the "Minus Color" adds a whole new dimension...As someone that watched everything in B&W because Color TV's weren't invented yet...It reminds me of my childhood..
I think all monster movies should still be in black in white.
@@bushidoblues9302 I agree; in color takes away from the darkness of the monsters...
At least there's a version for everyone!
Thank you!
Yeah exactly, and I’m happy watching either of the two versions! I feel like this is the best modern day movie that I’ve see in the past 5-10 years.
@@willxrlz7445 oh easily!
And it really does just have a much darker tone in line with the original and it feeling like a horror movie now is very fitting
The original Godzilla is essentially a Japanese ghost story in tone and through it's allegory. You encounter the supernatural early on and get away. But it will come for you again and again
In Godzilla you may survive the monster's initial attack. But will you survive when it comes back
You might survive the atomic bomb. But can you survive the radiation the "monster" that will come for you in the end
To experience and survive the horror is to suffer. Will you be able to persevere. To live
Also side note. Noticed that the musical score that played during the scenes with the fighter jet sounded extremely similar to music from Nausica of the Valley of the Wind. Perhaps an homage to Miyazaki who is known for his love of planes and his films that have helped Japanese movies remain relevant in foreign markets
I noticed it at the end too I thought “why do I feel whimsical right now in this terrifying moment? Oh wait it’s ghibli music haha”
This film is an instant classic in color or black and white! I will definitely buy both copies of this movie.
I actually saw the movie for the first time last Sunday, which means the first time I saw it was minus color. And I LOVED IT!!
I really appreciate your making this video, I only had a chance to see the color version and after seeing the clips you have shown I can imagine how great it would have been to see the BW version in the theater.I do hope that when the movie gets released to streaming or DVD that the BW version is included.
Thanks. Japan is getting a blu ray set that includes both color versions. We should get it not long after!
I made the mistake of buying Shin Godzilla with English dub audio. Never listen to English audio in foreign films
Yeah I picture that sounding horrible!
@@bushidoblues9302The voice actors just sound out of place, even cringe.
As a fan of Ghibli animation and Ozu films... always watch the Japanese language version.
Same is true for French and Spanish films.
1st scene of Godzilla was actually terrifying* Great decision and visual style!
Wow 21 times? I can see that. I’ve seen it 12 times, once in black-and-white and I would definitely see it again if I have the chance.
It's one of those rare films that has a very high replay value, but also it feels good to support it.
Going tomorrow. Can’t wait. Loved this movie
I hope you like it!
Godzilla Minus One was not shown in the Philippines. I havent seen this movie. Such a shame.
Missed out on the color version but going tonight to see it with my son minus color- so excited!
Saw it 3 times in color, including IMAX, once in b&w. Amazing film, in either version
Seriously, its that good
This is how it should have been released originally. Perfection
Godzilla minus one was seriously the best cinematic experience of my life (saw it in 4dx)
Black and white movies are great when done right like Schindler's List. I would watch Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color and it would be just as good if not better as the colored version because it's set in a time period where black and white makes sense.
Enjoyed your description of seeing the film in an old theater and in B&W!
Big Godzilla fan
i never saw the color version. Saw this version last night - friggin' amazing.
I missed the original run and was bummed about it but I’m glad now as this was my first Godzilla experience
I absolutely would have seen the movie countless times if I didn't live 4 hours away from the closest city that had any theatres showing it
Saw minus one both versions in 4d and I gotta say it might be the greatest movie ever to hit 4d theaters.
I would love it if they added film grain to it. I hope we get an awesome Blu-Ray release with extra goodies or even a director's cut.
Any kind of added goodies I'm down for!
I felt like the early island scenes seemed grainier, and I thought maybe they were reflecting the film quality of the 40s. And then the picture became crisper during the 50s.
film grain :D :D sure lets throw in all kinds of shitty artifacts from the past, mono audio that maybe skips from time to time too....some people
@@shaolin95 Aw poor man child. Grain hurt your feelings?
I really hope we get the colour and black & white versions when the 4k discs come out.
❤ black and white is the way to go!
Looking for B and W because I grew up watching the original GZ 1956 as a kid
One PHENOMENAL movie. B and W is simply the best.
While Minus One did get an Oscar Nomination I think it got snubbed by at least not being nominated for best foreign film.
It's better then anything Boringwood has made in years.
It didn’t get snubbed, Japan didn’t submit it for this category.
@@darklink2000 Did Japan submit it for best picture? Because it really should have been nominated!
@@erinm9445 They only submitted it for the VFX which it did get a nomination for.
Oh, well that's nice to know. I knew about the VFX nom, didn't know they hadn't submitted for anything else. I wonder why?

I manage to catch the last showing on the last day. I was not expecting this movie to be this good 9/10!
Def buying it when it drops
That black rain scene was truly haunting.
As the credits were rolling, I thought to myself "There's no way I think I can ever bring myself to see the original movie.....Minus Color is a MASTERPIECE!"
Of course the story, characters, score, etc were all amazing, but the way they engineered that *LOOK* for Minus Color was just mind blowing!
This is THE definitive Godzilla -1 for me. :)
I also haven't been to the theater since the early 80's. I'd wait 6 months until the VHS was available to rent then I saw whatever it was. And still do that but with uhd blurays then I see it
The minus color was just so well done..almost made me feel like i was watching a old black and white documentary about something that had happen.
B&W is so much better than color in Monster movies
It is!
