I've got the Japanese Special Edition 4k, & quite literally, other than the English subtitles, EVERYTHING is in Japanese. It's still worth it! This is an astounding set!!
I agree. I bought a blu ray player just for the set. And the extras are fun even without translation. Poor actress had to do her own stunts with no stand in(!).
Just a heads up, Amazon Prime has Minus Color available digitally for 6 bucks. So if you want it but dont want to drop 65 bucks for the Japanese set. that an option.
To say the least, godzilla minus one and Oppenheimer would have been a very fitting double feature movie trend over than the barbenheimer movie trend last year. Since minus one and Oppenheimer touch down on the allegory of nuclear bombs destruction
the UK deluxe set supposedly has subtitled special features and a translated booklet. US were quite lazy with theirs. Edit: that poster you said was used on Japan physicals is a fanmade poster, it's the Monsterverse Godzilla with the Minus One dorsal fins.
I initially pre-ordered the Amazon Steelbook, then when Togo offered the boxset I bought that. I haven't canceled my Steelbook pre-order, though. I still plan on getting it as well.
I got the 4-Disc $65 release from September and the only thing I want to clarify is that that release does not include an English dub. You do get the English subtitles but you get a Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD 5.1, Dolby TrueHD 2.0, and a Dolby TrueHD 2.0 audio descriptive track all in Japanese on the three movie discs (4K color, HD color, HD Minus Color). The discs also offer an option to play the menus in Japanese in addition to English (including the bonus disc). This is all in an attempt to replicate the Japanese-exclusive version from earlier this year. There are also theatrical trailers for the movie (in 4K with HDR on the 4K disc) on all of the feature film discs with no subtitles in addition to the the bonus disc also with no subtitles. I would still say that it is currently the definitive release, but I don't fault those who think it is way overpriced for what you get.
@@TPRErik I totally agree! It is one of the crown jewels of my 4K/Blu-ray/DVD collection and it looks jaw-dropping in 4K with Dolby Vision. The Dolby Atmos was incredible as well.
@@DoomRulz Unfortunately no. There are also trailers for the movie in Japanese on each of the actual feature film discs. These trailers also don't have subtitles. However, both cuts of the movie do have English subtitles and every disc (including the extras disc) has an English menu so you can at least see the titles of the featurettes in English.
I am pretty sure that the Limited Deluxe Edition will have ENG subs for the UK version. It will ship in a month. I am not sure why they are not having the ENG subs on the extras in the US. Maybe wait a bit more.
I always support physical media, as I have all the Godzilla films to date on BRD ( used to have VHS then DVD). But minus one is an odd conundrum. I want one set that has the standard film, minus color, and the English dub. There's not one release that has all those things together. So I saw Vudu had a sale for Godzilla day to get the standard film on digital for $7. I couldn't pass that up. This will suffice until an all.encompassing physical media release comes out.
You can get the $75 Box set (In English) from Diabolic (They import from England). It won't be released and shipped until they release it in England, which is supposed to be in Dec.
Oof, I was gonna go with the box set that included Minus Color, but if it's only on blu, I'm gonna pass. I personally think the demand for Minus Color is big, and they know it... they'll probably announce a separate release for Minus Color next year so they can get twice as much money out of us lol.
I had the standard 4K version preordered but was really looking around for the steelbook. I had it in the cart on Target a week ago and then it sold out before I could complete the purchase. Had pretty much given up on getting one anytime soon and then I just happened to wake up at 5am a few days ago and saw it available for preorder on Amazon. Snagged that bad boy asap. Bad news is the price was nearly $20 more than what i had seen around other sites.
I''m just going to grab the Standard 4K when it's released here in Australia as I am not a collectors edition type of person as they are pretty pricey for a hard box and maybe a mini poster and some picture or post cards
I bought the Toho 4K 4 disc set for $80.00 and glad I did because it has the B/W version. Watched it several times, haven’t got tired of it yet, also Friday the 4K 1954 Godzilla is also arriving.. Also they are releasing a longer version of it, meaning multiple, multiple disc…
I got fed up with the mishandled offerings, so I made my own 4K HDR disc with the English subtitles and English dub. If they release it that way officially, I would gladly buy it and retire my disc.
Amazon has the Steelbook back in stock but at a higher cost, $50+. I went ahead and ordered it as it is worth it to me and more so if it has Minus Color as well.
The Japanese Collectors box set did in fact have Minus Color included. You can see the disc in the image you show in your video. It's BD, not 4k though.
Godzilla film release to home media in 2024: Discussing Slip Covers & Oscar Winner cover text. *pat my clear see through Godzilla 1985 VHS tape in clamshell package and wipe a tear from my eye* You made it buddy... You made it...
The best set is the 4 disc one that includes Minus Color and teh bonus feature disc (despite not having subs). Honestly, most of the bonus features don't need subs. The interview and panel are really the only things that need them. BTW, getting all of the features subbed would have upped the price of the set since they would have had to hire a translator for them all, time them, and re-author them.

Just a heads up - there's a ton of small dealers selling counterfeit GMO movies as DVD format. I have the real blu ray from the godzilla site and the fake versions have terrible audio. Large entities like Walmart selling the bad product.
I like that Japanese collection but not don’t like the lack of a minus color 4k and the special features being in Japanese only.. so I’m hoping they release movie movies in a 4k set through the Criterion collection
Will the 4k none Steelbook have English language? I know most people prefer subtitles but I would like the option of being lazy and not reading even though the movie is easy to follow.
This only confused me because on Amazon both Blu ray & 4K editions are listed as 2 disc. Yet here it’s described as 1 disc for Blu ray edition and 4K is the 2 disc. No disrespect but it sounds like a lot of guessing as no one is 💯 sure what to expect.
Everyone should refuse to purchase anything until tojo releases the bonus disc with subtitles Absolutely ridiculous they can't add subtitles to the bonus features. People should be demanding it
It’s 2024 and they still can’t/won’t do feature complete Godzilla releases in North America. Typical. I went with the Godzilla store version since that has Minus Color and there’s no telling whether it’ll ever show up outside of that in subsequent releases. Not even Shin’s monochrome version came out in the US. I don’t even care for 4K which bloats the price in my eyes, so that disc is useless to me. Absolutely no excuse for the lack of subtitles for the special features either.
It's the Japanese release that was then shipped for release in the US. Whoever released the movie there theatrically should be releasing the home version officially, and adding English subtitles, eg: like in the UK.
I double ordered the steelbook 1 from walmart and 1 from amazon to see which one gets to me first. Other one is getting returned. But nowadays you cant trust all retailers to follow through on your order.
There was a lot of unnecessary confusion over this release. And the releases themselves are not ultimate. Perfect example of how not to release a movie. Amateur hour.
If you didn't buy the special editions when they first came out, then you're stuck with the basic DVD. Not a great business model. Guess I can pirate a collector's copy.
