@@denimchicken104 I would think so, too, but the whole "This parking is going to cost a fortune after we were in there for ever" is also kind of funny. Not as funny, but can see where they were going with it.
Seinfeld is the ideal example of what happens when you have the best writers, producers, directors and actors working together to create art. I have seen every single episode dozens of times and one is better than the next. For me, this show was so superb that only the final episode was a let down. Not that it was bad, but that the rest of the episodes were so good that it was just not up to their standard..
I always thought jerry was putting his hand on his head cause he was like "Oh god now the cars not starting we're never gonna get outta here" but really it was him covering his laugh xD
That's right, go watch it on Netflix and you'll see they used only the dry retakes. It would actually have been a lot funnier if they kept that outtake of the first time the car didn't start in there.
i've seen that episode many times, very well done and the ending was perfect, the crew did a great job of transforming the set into a garage, it looks like real garage Michael was smart by adding the air conditioner in the box, it added to the comedy.
"Chinese Restaurant" is legendary, but as to "Parking Garage" I find the backstage story more interesting than the episode itself. It felt like they were throwing everything at the wall to see if something sticks. "The Mango" is probably my #1, followed by "The Opposite" and "The Contest".
Truly one of the best episodes in an amazing show. This episode was so relatable and with this BTS, I appreciate it so much more. Apparently the car not starting was not by design? That truly a blessed show. That was the perfect ending.
Pure genius this show and these guys, writers, director, producers, Seinfeld was on another level. An unattainable level, can't be duplicated ever again..
We were living in L.A. at the time this episode aired, though I was too young to what the show was. A few nights after this one aired, my mother saw Julia Louise-Dreyfuss at a gym. My mother was just finishing up a workout, and told her the episode was the funniest she had ever seen in her life, and one of her favorite gags was actually Elaine's goldfish subplot. My mother said she couldn't have been nicer. It was this episode that my mother realized this show was going to be something.
All time favorite sit com.. Many smiles and lots of laughs 🤣 with each episode..I still enjoy watching the re runs.and now learning about behind the scenes is even better..Thank you so much for giving us all many years of so much laughter 💕
I think I learned more from this making-of clip than any other one. No idea that it was a set, or that the car not starting was serendipity, or about the smashed face and laughter.
Tge first one i ever saw was the one where George was running down the stairs and slipped on the invitation paper and ended up in the hospital with the Dr. saying "he may never walk again"
i love how they kept some of the breaks in the finished product, its not all the time so each one is a little special but its so hilarious seeing them cracking up on especially magical moments like that car not starting, just perfect
I have seen him mention often that playing Kramer was like some divine intervention,as if he was channeling someone via himself. So I am sure most of the stuff he did was just surrendering to the character and being spontaneous.
Watch Comedians in Cars getting Coffee with Michael Richards. He says something like, he realizes he should have just said nothing and breathed. It is a shame he didn't but he has learned from it and moved on, so should everyone else.
The thing that makes it so relatable is the fact that this has happened to lots of people, myself included. In one particular instance I searched for my vehicle for hours, never realizing I was two floors off! Insane, but funny.
1:33 - 1:36 Upper left section of the screen. Look behind the woman in the Black and White dress and between the Yellow marker 3 and I think that is 4. You can see the mirror. It is reflecting Kramer carrying the box and the rest of the gang. I actually thought they did this in a separate studio or just one level of a parking garage.
That would really suck to lose your car in a parking garage and after all that searching to finally find it and the sucker won't start. And to think that last part wasn't planned. lol
I'm rewatching the series now that it's on Netflix. The bit at the end where Kramer jumps out of the car to "survey the horizon" then jumps back in isn't in the Netflix version. I dug out the DVD's from my bookshelf and it's the same there too. Curious
the ending with kramer getting out of the car to look at the horizon has been cut on Netflix. or was it always cutted and it just ended with the car not working and a fade out?
He was getting heckled and disrespected. The guy was saying he sucked and had no talent and Seinfeld was the only reason he had any fame. The mans up there trying to do his job. I'm not sticking up for him but I've snapped and freaked and said and done things instantly and regretted it. He lives with it and has done all he could to make it right. And majority have forgiven him. It was a scary sight though. People need to move on. It's old news.
Yeah the original ending was for them to drive the car around and wonder where the exit is. :) Yeah that is funny but the car won't start, THAT is funnier. :)
Did they use the exiting the car and looking into the horizon in the final episode? I don't see it in my copy, wonder if I'm watching an abridged version.
After all these years, didn’t know car not starting was just pure coincidence, was a blessing to end that way, perfect.
Same. And I never noticed them laughing before when the car didn't start.
Yeah. Seems like that would’ve been then obvious comical ending.

Kramer getting out of the car after it fails to start is classic .
I always lose it
It's funny how they didn't cut it into the final version. It's a moment of pure genius.
I don't think that's in the final version that was aired on TV.
I can't believe that box had an actual air conditioner in it!!! I always assumed it was empty.
That set is mind-boggling. Absolutely believable. Genius!
I assume it's made of plywood flats, but it looks like rebar concrete totally. Very well done, and the mirror trick worked flawlessly.
The fact they didn't write the car not starting into the episode is surprising. That was what made it so fucking funny.

I think this was the episode that hooked me on the show.
for me it was The Fix Up but yea 'the show about nothing' aspect of it got me hooked

The first episode that made a lot of people take notice and realize what great show it was.
you are thinking of the Contest
The first genuinely great episode of the show was The Pen.
The Chinese Restaurant got me hooked but The Parking Garage made me stay. Easily one of the top 5 best episodes.
To me it was The Bet.
Omg I found it to be awful. It was stagnant and I could tell they were struggling to find material. It felt like filler to me!

LOVE these backstories!
Kramer is by far the best comedic character of all time.
Tom Cherones looks like George Lucas.
This is all time fav of any episode of any sitcom
kramer's laugh control is tremendous!!
The funny thing is that their being exhausted probably added to the tension of the whole ep.

This episode and The Chinese Restaurant remains as my two favourite episodes in the show ever. They are absolutely hilarious
wow when it shows the parking garage you can't even tell that it's mirrors that make it look bigger. how did they do that again?
With mirrors
They did it like a mirror maze. You can see some of the numbered color swatches get distorted in the mirrors.
@@tehjamerz You're the real hero
Wow…I’ve watched that episode at least a dozen times. I always thought it was a real parking garage. Nice job set designers💯✔️👍🏽♥️

4:26 Michael: I never broke character
4:38 ~"Michael breaks character"~
i wonder what michael richards was thinking when he decided to get out of the car and look off to the horizon.
Hahahaha that fitted the character perfectly! Like the reaction one would have if it happened on the road: "maybe a ride?".
I think it was more of , what do i do now. So the natural reaction is to look around for ideas.
I have seen him mention often that playing Kramer was like some divine intervention,as if he was channeling someone via himself. So I am sure most of the stuff he did was just surrendering to the character and being spontaneous.
i think its just him trying to buy some time to let the car settle down before he tries again
He should've said giddy up.
This is by far one of my most favorite Seinfeld episodes of al time. No wonder it was LD who wrote it!
Literally nothing happens. Spend 20 plus minutes of 4 morons walking around in a parking garage. Absolutely hilarious.

Always knew about the car not starting not part of the script, but never knew it wasnt a real parking garage. That is amazing!!
I'm not sure that's breaking character. He laughed unintentionally but he was still pretending he was Kramer.
One of my favorite episodes. Rewatch it a lots of times 😂

This was the first episode of seinfeld that made me think "Daym this show is meant for me XD "

I wonder if people will forgive and forget. If I had a show I'd try to get him a part in a heartbeat.
5:19 every time I hear that car try to start I think “no bagel nobagelnobagelnobagel” from The Strike. The cadence is exactly the same
George chickening out was typically priceless.
I love this guy. Committed to the end.
"When that car didn't start, I knew instantly we had a blow"

lol, kramer get out of the car for no reason and looks out into the horizon.

This is one episode I remember with fondness, especially the unexpected and totally not planned ending!
I spotted about three Ford pintos, my favorite car!
I love this show so much.

I love these recaps!
I always thought that was a real parking garage.
Jason Alexander's impression of MIchael Richards at 2:57 is hilariously accurate
This episode is the best in Seinfeld history.
As a person that owns that exact type car! I can tell you that happens a lot!! Mine is a 2 tone grey 83 ltd with that same motor!!!
That's hilarious considering the car was only 6 or so years old when this episode was made (definitely an 86 up, because the high mounted brake light)
Who hasn't gotten stuck with a dead battery at the most inopportune time? No one can write that, so it had to happen by itself.
yeah you're totally right. such raw comedy
my favorite episode!!!
Beautiful!

"you ahve no concept of what it takes to be a soldier"
I imagine it has something to do with the destruction of brain cells.
I would imagine diaper sales increased mysteriously throughout those 9 seasons. Then it comes out on dvd and skyrocket again.
Michael suffers for his comedy the way the Soup Nazi suffered for his soup.
Wdym?
what a classic episode
Jason Alexander's talent is brilliant!
That was the episode that made Seinfeld Seinfeld! Brilliantly written and quintessentially Seinfeld! No surprise it was written by Larry David!
Poor Kramer choosing to carry the air conditoner. He is so dedicated.
Julia is so fucking gorgeous.
Kramer getting out of the car didn.t make the final cut of the show. what a shame😢

2:10 GMC cyclone?
when people are tired in general they tend to do that anyways no matter what they are doing!
I wonder if the car was meant to not start only known by the producers. Just driving off in silence doesn't sound like a Seinfeld ending.
this happens all the time in jersey

why didnt michael getting out of the car and looking out make it into the show?
