  • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued an apology to the Native American activist and actor Sacheen Littlefeather almost 50 years after she received backlash for declining Marlon Brando’s Oscar at the 1973 awards show. The act was in protest of the entertainment industry's depiction of Native Americans.

@@thomasdequincey5811 Is that a genuine question? They refused to let her read Brando's full statement about the maltreatment of Native Americans in Hollywood; she was booed by many and not taken seriously, which the Academy let happen because they didn't want her there. She was also treated badly by some of the guests, including John Wayne, which the Academy did nothing to mitigate or protect her from. Furthermore, she received threats following the event and Hollywood spread lies about her in the press in an attempt to demean her and her message. That's my understanding of what the Academy 'did', but with them, it's more what they 'didn't' do, and continue not to do. Evil is often allowed to flourish because people don't respond to it properly - and the Oscars are as guilty of that as any other major commercial corporation.

Instead he allowed someone to take his place and shine a light on a cause that most Americans never thought about. And on a night when millions would hear. I would bet he asked if she would want to stand in his place. And neither were so no naive as to the backlash. So ask Sacheen Littlefeather if she thinks it is Brando would should apologize, if he was still alive. One hundred percent sure she would say no.
