    • @AnilBehal
      @AnilBehal  2 года назад

      You are right. IPA is a retrospective account of what has transpired in the past. Participants recount their lived experiences of a given phenomenon with the researcher who uses her own lens to make sense of what the participant is making sense of. We call this the "double hermeneutic." There really is no such thing as "here and now" in phenomenology. The moment you begin to have someone reflect on their "here and now" as in present experiences, they have already slipped into the past. We are always too late in capturing the here and now. There is an approach that you can use to capture what you are suggesting as the here and now experience. It requires a customized study design and a somewhat different methodological approach. Contact me at abehal@email.fielding.edu if I can be of help!

    Hi, Dr. Behal, Is bracketing needed in IPA? Because in Hermeneutic Phenomenology suspends the biases through Bracketing in the process of the interpretation of the data. Thank you very much.

    • @AnilBehal
      @AnilBehal  3 года назад +1

      "Bracketing" is always very useful while conducting interviews and collecting phenomenological data. It's no different in hermeneutic phenomenology and IPA.

    • @michaelarkin
      @michaelarkin 3 года назад

      In IPA we wouldn't usually take the view that it is *possible* to suspend your biases, so wouldn't usually use bracketing per se in IPA. It is useful to engage in reflexive practices (throughout the project, not just prior to it), but with an aim to understanding and managing your biases, rather than excluding them altogether.

    • @AnilBehal
      @AnilBehal  3 года назад +1

      @@michaelarkin Reflexivity is about understanding how the researcher (wittingly and unwittingly) impacts and is being impacted by the research. In my opinion, bracketing is, in and of itself a reflexive process.

    • @AnilBehal
      @AnilBehal  4 года назад

      While some phenomenological studies are written as though one were conducting a research on oneself, IPA is different in that you are researching participants in order to collect rich and evocative data through their retrospective accounts. If you, as a researcher also took on the role of a participant, you would introduce a lot of bias; not that IPA is quantitative in nature. The researcher must assume a paradoxically bilateral relationship with the participant, which implies that there are 2 dimensions: the observer and the observed. I hope this helps. If you'd like to talk about this some more, or need my help with IPA, please email me directly at abehal@email.fielding.edu

    Sir, while doing phenomenological study do we need to give importance for socio-demographic variables

    • @AnilBehal
      @AnilBehal  2 года назад

      In phenomenological studies, the researcher typically looks for and recruits a "purposive sample" of participants who have direct lived experience with the phenomenon. A good sample is representative of the life-world of those who have experienced the phenomenon. For instance, if you are researching a phenomenon such as the "lived experience of unwed mothers raising a child in a single family household," your research participants are all unwed mothers who are raising children, regardless of where they are located, what social class they belong to etc. Your focus is on exploring the lived experience of these unwed mothers. Sir, What do you mean by turnkey approach? Can you please explain how is it ready to use?

    • @AnilBehal
      @AnilBehal  3 года назад +2

      Great question, Nikhil. IPA is a structured approach to phenomenological data collection/analysis in what can be otherwise, a highly unstructured and convoluted field of inquiry. While some may argue that phenomenology as a philosophy of research does not lend itself to structure, the latter is often something that novice researchers need in order to understand the essence of a phenomenon. IPA is a well-thought out, turnkey approach with distinct steps, as opposed to a methodology. It rests on several theoretical pillars such as phenomenology, hermeneutics, and idiography, which gives it a somewhat scientific flavor.

      Phenomenological writers inc Heidegger generally try to avoid being labelled 'subjectivist'. It would miss the whole point of his project, which was to discard the Cartesian (dualist) notion of subject/object. Epistemology, an idea (a knowing 'subject') is also, thus, problematised by Heidegger (preferring ontology). And then, I doubt Husserl would consider himself a social constructionist, because he pursued invariant essences (i.e. empirical reality). In other words, no, I wouldn't do what you suggest since it misconstrues the philosophical underpinnings of IPA.

      Phenomenology in general and IPA in particular have to do with retrospective (past) accounts of experiences and episodes. There are other methodologies that study here-and-now experiences, such as those that deploy Gestalt which is about the "totality of an experience" to include the present.

      @@AnilBehal I have a doubt. once I am done collecting the data, I will always analyze it much later. will it not be alright to use phenomenology? Then it becomes the accounts of what I have experienced. I will add meaning to it as per my experiences then. so will it not be my 'lived experience' of what I felt to be there at the moment in the world of my participants as well as adding meaning to what I feel they felt? what I mean is, every analysis we do will always be of either our or our participants' 'lived experiences'. so why can't we use it?

The researcher is not observing the participant, per se. Both are immersed in the stories and narratives around the lived experience of participants.

    I'm not sure I follow you, but then again I didn't watch the whole video. My understanding of this method is that we as researchers are interested in the experience of the participant which the participant is trying to understand and verbalize and which we as researchers in turn try to understand from their understanding and verbalization. This means that the actual experience is available to us through a double hermeneutic. The consequences of this is that, although we must stay grounded in our data, our results are inevitably an interpretation. Even the participants account of the experience is an interpretation. And we are not interested in the participants account per se, but rather the participants experience.
