I think Spielberg wanted to leave the details surrounding the aliens and their past actions as a mystery. None of that is important anyway to telling Roy's story, which is really what this movie is all about. Close Encounters was ground-breaking for portraying aliens as a benign source of wonder, rather than as terrifying conquerors as was the norm for all the sci-fi movies that had come before. Yet Spielberg was also smart enough to realize that even curious, "friendly" aliens who meant no harm would nevertheless do things that would mystify and frighten us (without necessarily intending to). This movie is a real masterpiece of sci-fi cinema, and it's a shame that it gets largely forgotten because it had the misfortune to come out at the same time as Star Wars, a movie that completely overshadowed everything else in pop culture around the world for years.

14:26 Excellent observation. Spielberg has such a talent for showing family disfunction. In a generation who saw reruns of Leave it to Beaver and other upright tv shows, Spielberg was part of a generation of filmmakers that showed children/family dynamics with authenticity rarely seen before. Great reaction.

FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC reaction. In the top echelon of reactions to this movie. You were so in tune with it, from the very beginning to the very end! Some reactors fall madly in love with this movie.....some are totally confused, they're expecting (and wanting) War of the Worlds and every other formula alien movie they've ever seen and they don't get it. Some can't even follow it! You knew EXACTLY what was going on at all times, even at the end! The questions that you had....that's the point! The unknown mysteries of space, the awe that we have! They were investigating us! The way we're looking for life in outer space, so were they. And they found it! With Earth! "2001: A Space Odyssey" is the same way, it's about the great unknown of the universe (totally different movie but - like this - completely one of a kind. And just as beautiful.). I LOVE what you said: Jillian is taking the pictures SO SHE CAN SHOW RONNIE WHAT HAPPENED! Never thought of that! Brilliant! I always sort of wondered why the film put that in there, other than it's an interesting way to present the aliens. As the years have gone on, some people take umbrage that he's leaving his family - they don't understand that the family unit in suburban USA was totally breaking down at this point in the late 70s and this film is a snapshot of that moment in time. EVERYONE was splitting up and getting a divorce.....which is why all of us kids who came of age in the 80s were latchkey kids with single moms. (Jillian is a single mom, if you notice). I could write about this reaction forever. FANTASTIC. One of the absolute best reactions to this movie. You are a one and only, LOVE YA, Imon, THANK YOU. This was indeed a special one.

Here's my "translation" of the musical conversations: First time the three ufos come down and respond to the theme in literal musical harmony, basically transmitting they come in peace. And the sound the humans playing is a "meek", non-threatening tone (an oboe sound) Then, before the mothership comes down, they send scouts and set up strategic positions. Then the mothership comes down....and it responds to the harmonic tone with mightiness and establishes superiority. A tuba sound versus an oboe sound. Then it throws our own horror theme out at us....the Jaws theme! (which is Spielberg's/composer John Williams' previous film).....as if to say "You humans better not try any violent stuff or else!" And then the hatch opens.

Oh my gosh, Imon Snow doing Close Encounters??? I was about to go to bed but I'm now going to try and stay up and watch this! If I fall asleep, I'll give you a "real" comment in the morning, when I finish it up. But I had to tell you that. I saw this in the theatre when I was 8, when it came out. It came out 6 months after Star Wars. This movie BLEW ME AWAY, way more than Star Wars. When the lights came up after the movie ended, people were in this happy daze, almost stoned on the movie, as if we all had gone through the experience together. (which we had!). I saw it three times in the theatre, and each time was the same. I've NEVER had a movie theatre experience like seeing "Close Encounters". As you wrote: it's a really special movie. There are lots of directors I love more than Spielberg, but this is his coolest movie, in my opinion. Ok, going to watch it now....see you on the other side!!!! (PS: Hope you're doing ok in these crazy times we're living)

Presumably these alien ships have faster than light travel just to get here. So time dilation becomes a thing. The pilots would feel like very little time has passed even though on Earth about 30 years have gone by. This leads to what I think is an interesting but disturbing idea. When/if Roy comes back, most likely his family will be dead. This is unless the aliens don't plan to keep people for very long anymore. But he was in a jumpsuit so I'm assuming they are anticipating a long term voyage. I appreciate your observations. I've seen this movie many times yet I've never noticed the Sodom and Gomorrah connection before. I think of ET as the unofficial sequel to this movie. As to why, my theory is that the aliens are looking for intelligent life just as we are. So they get here and start collecting samples.. Are we intelligent in their eyes? I think the tones were a test. Music can be seen as a representation of math. Math will be universally understood. If we can show we understand tones, aka math, we show we are intelligent. That's why they took more people. I think these and future travelers will have a completely different experience on the ship than the previous abductees since humans have intelligent status now.

It's a great movie. Spielberg obviously wanted to keep the audience guessing. He throws a lot of interesting stuff at you, then leaves you to consider what it all means at the end. One interesting behind the scenes fact you might like: The French scientist is played by famous 1960's French film director Francois Truffaut, making his one and only appearance acting in an American movie. I think Speilberg was a fan of his work and asked him to be in it. Our main character is played by Richard Dreyfuss who was previously in Speilberg's "Jaws" in 1975. Speilberg's first film "Duel" is a pretty interesting movie too. One to add to your list. In that film it's basically man vs machine, as a traveling businessman pisses off a truck driver leading to an epic chase across the dusty back highways of California.

The military planes that were found in the desert was supposed to be an actual group of 5 navy planes that went missing while conducting a training exercise off of Florida, they were flight 19, what really captured the attention of these planes disappearing without a trace to this very day is that one navy boat plane that was part of the search and rescue was lost without a trace as well. All in all, 13 people and 6 planes vanished inside the Bermuda triangle in that instance.

I absolutely love this movie and would almost call it perfect if it weren’t for one MAJOR problem that sadly can’t be ignored, Richard Dreyfuss’ character is an absolute bastard. He scares his family away, he runs off to find the aliens rather than trying to convince the scientists that they should bring him and the other “chosen”, and then he leaves the planet without letting his family know what happened to him. I know he was under a “compulsion” but it’s still no excuse to treat your family like that.
As someone who’s father also abandoned me and my mom and disappeared off the face of the earth this obviously hit a nerve. And for any who disagree with me, Steven Spielberg has gone on record saying that had he been married with children when he made this movie he would’ve changed it completely.

A natural born storyteller is born with a need to say something specific and endemic to their soul. Most often they aren't sure of what it is and how to say it, but they feel it deeply through the fibers of their being. With honing of craft and artistic skill, some of the best of these story tellers find a way to share their deeply felt story, that do not always necessarily present in words or verbal meaning. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, is Steven Spielberg accomplishing just such a thing, in only his second feature film. An exuberant natural storyteller and master of his craft.

Love this reaction. Yet another interpretation of Roy’s willingness to leave his family could simply be that the Aliens’ implanted message COMPELS Roy to leave with them-despite his family, and the Aliens themselves don’t have anything resembling a nuclear family in their culture, so they don’t understand the ramifications of choosing Roy. They don’t know the harm they’re causing, and Roy can’t resist the impulse. Anyone who understands anything about addiction would understand this theory, because the addiction will often trump loyalty to one’s family.

Spielberg took a superficial softer approach to the direct encounter of aliens and didn't want to get into the idea there might be malevolent agendas with some Grey" alien species towards humans because in reality that's what most abductions indicate. Back when this movie was produced it may not have been understood by the general public about how many different types of Grey aliens have been reported and what their abductions entailed like we know now.

  • @BigGator5

Love this movie! Easy 8.5/10 rating. That said...
I am of the increasing opinion that there is no such thing as extra-terrestrial UFOs (or whatever they are called these days). They are either hoaxes, scientific explain phenomena, or advanced classified aircraft (like the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk and Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, both of which actually operated out of Groom Lake (Area 51) before being declassified). Every "alien abduction" story is wildly different and highly suspect.
While fun to imagine these things, it's called science-fiction for a reason.
Fun Fact: J. Allen Hynek was a famous ufologist and the creator of the diverse kinds of contact that this movie is based on, as explained in his "The UFO Experience: A Scientific Study" (1972) book. The first kind: sighting of an one or more UFOs. The second kind: observation of physical evidence of extra-terrestrial visitation. The third kind: contact with one or more extra-terrestrials. Hynek made a cameo at the end of the movie as the guy smoking a pipe at the landing site.
One And Done Fact: Cary Guffey's (Berry Guiler) performances were so good that they only had to do one or two takes of each shot he was in. He became known as "One-Take Cary" on the set, and director Steven Spielberg had a T-shirt printed up for him with the phrase written on it.
Music Enthusiast Fact: The iconic five-note melody was a chance arrangement that both composer John Williams and director Steven Spielberg happened to like out of hundreds of different permutations.

I have no idea if you would be interested in watching it, but if you want a great tv show about characters coming together to solve problems scientifically and diplomatically, perhaps you would like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Easily the best Star Trek related property of the last decade, and manages to say something every episode. It’s also a great starting point for newcomers, as it requires little knowledg of previous Star Trek shows (though you may get more out of it if you know) whilst also exploring and expanding the lore of Star Trek in fresh new ways.
As for the “why” of the aliens of this film, the answer to me seems simple: to learn. They’ve been abducting people for years, yet none of them are hurt. They have technology leaps and bounds ahead of our own, so if they really wanted to, they could just destroy us on a whim. But the people they abducted are let go, unharmed (aside from the loss of time) and instead of destroying the people gathered at the ordained meeting spot, they released their abductees and simply made contact. They were curious about us, and they needed to know more.

  • @TheNeptuneArc
    @TheNeptuneArc Год назад

The people plucked from different time periods didn't age because the aliens likely travel at relativistic speeds (close, or at, the speed of light), which cause time dilation effects, those on board experience very little time passing, where as for anyone outside of the ship, time passes normally. I think this adds another layer of "the aliens wanted a diverse human sample to study" idea in it that the sample not only included people from different backgrounds and demographics, but also people from different time periods, where you could see diversity, or differences in beliefs, understandings, knowledge and biases. This also shows the aliens have been doing this abducting thing for ... quite ... a while now.
Another point I'd like to mention, if you want to put the tinfoil hat on for this one, is that this movie is rumored to be based on a event in real life that happened in the USA in 1968, when an scientific "exchange" program was set in motion with an extraterrestrial species leaving 2 members behind here on Earth, and 12 humans sent to their own homeworld, allegedly named Serpo. This is the essential information of the event, since the details vary from one whistleblower account to another. Some say 2 humans died on that planet, 2 remained living there till the end of their lives, that the rest returned here, or that 2 returned, and the other 10 remained on their planet etc. The goal was to learn from each other, we study them, they study us, etc. I think they only left 2 here because their population size was allegedly much smaller than ours. One of the aliens died, and one has, again, allegedly, survived till present day in some secret underground facility in the US.
This was in 1968, allegedly. Its 2022 now, so if true, what else do you think has gone on from then till now? 🙃

That was great. Do you like to binge or marathon. Search for and watch "Spielberg Taken Series".
Mid 90's epic tale. Begins at the end of WW2 and follows 3 unrelated families (to start out) through 4 generations but all tied into the experience. A 10-part 15 hour marathon that includes much or all of the UFO lore.
Narrated throughout by a young Dakota Fanning.
Perhaps some other commenters have seen it before and could chime in with their thoughts.
    It's another awesome Spielberg creation.
    Cheers...

I saw your NOPE reaction so I'm really glad to see that you're doing this because I think this film was the first Hollywood film to leave all that 1950s and 60s approach of the invading enemy trope and propose something more hopeful and collaberative. "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and the original "The Thing" and "The Blob" were all about suffocation and elimination--this one is about communication and connectivity, which from a homo sapiens standpoint is for sure a better approach. Denis Vilneuve's "Arrival" is in that vein, though my guess is you've seen it already.
Oh and to the notion of pilots not wanting to report a UFO, the USAF and eventually the media made it clear that anyone publicly reporting UFO sightings were stigmatized and made to look as if they were fools or lying/hoaxers seeking attention. That sort of behavior went from the mid to late 1960s through maybe the early 2000s. A couple of cases that really speak to the issue of UFO sightings and actual national security include the so-called "Battle of Los Angeles" in 1941 and the rash of sightings and radar returns from five airbases in Washington DC in I think 1951. Hundreds of shells were fired at the object in the former and multiple jets were scrambled in the latter to no avail. And the so-called "foo fighters" at the end of WW2, reported by pilots on both sides. The French gentleman in this film is played by new-wave film director Fracois Trufault, who is a cultural stand-in for Jacques Valle, who was research and investigative partner to Dr. J. Allen Hynek from the USAF "Project Bluebook," which was meant to discount and de-legitimatize the phenomenon in the 1960s. In fact, Dr. Hynek appears in this film as an easter egg, he's the one toward the end on Devil's Tower, with the goatee, glasses and smoking pipe.

Have you ever seen "The Day The Earth Stood Still"? Because the aliens come in peace, remember? And you leave out "2001: A Space Odyssey" which is directly an influence on "Close Encounters". (he's even got the same special effects guy for a start: Douglas Trumball).

@@TTM9691 Ah yes thank you for the 2001 reminder. I guess I view that film as less an "alien" film than intrinsically human one, as I interpret it as human transformation and advancement (albeit through alien influence). I didn't know about the special effects personnel.

Watched this movie a few weeks ago, I honestly wasn't invested in Roy as a main character. Obviously having an encounter with alien entities could be an overwhelming thing, and Ronnie should have tried better understanding him, but Roy needed to better explain himself and his emotions. The dinner scene could have been a perfect moment for that, but he acts almost like a child. And while that sounds rude, he becomes more confident after he starts traveling to the mountain. Where was that energy before? His lack of investment, interaction or care towards his family really made me roll my eyes
I had much more investment in Jillian despite having less screen time
Maybe I'm being too critical, and I hope I'm missing some aspect about his character. But until actually see a redeemable trait, I'm just not really invested

Because at the incident at the railroad tracks the aliens had burned an invitation into his mind. All he could think of was where is it and how do I get there. It so engrained into his mind it just overwhelmed him. This explains the energy he had after he knew what the destination was. Along with others, who were hauled off in the helicopter, he had been invited to go with them. He's the only one invited who made it. You notice the aliens didn't take any of the people who were also ready to go.

Because Jillian had the same experience as him; she was the only person he could actually talk to about the subject. All Ronnie wanted him to do was to STFU about it and go back to work. Understandable, but she didn't care about what was going on in his head, she only wanted him to go back to normal. It didn't occur to her that he wanted that more than she did (it was his head after all) but he couldn't. How DO you explain that to someone when you don't even know how to describe it?
