#react #reaction #theverdict
Finally! For the first time a reaction to one of the all time greatest courtroom dramas...
It's amazing nobody has done so.
Until trump gets convicted of all charges for treason and its made into a movie
Agree. There are lots of reactions to 12 angry men. But very few reactions to the verdict
Paul Newman is one of the greatest actors of all time. I got to spend the day with him in 1993. Good man, too.
Lucky!!
There's a line in the bar scene (7:37, not shown in this reaction) where Paul Newman says "I cut myself so bad shaving that my eyes almost cleared up". What that meant was when people drink alcohol to excess, sometimes their eyes get bloodshot (they get red eyes). So, he meant that the blood from his red eyes drained OUT of his eyes because he bled so much from his shaving mishap. Get it? The joke being that he's a total drunk throughout his entire day, every day-- he's even still wasted when he wakes up in the morning. Took me a couple seconds to get it myself, and it's actually quite funny (albeit some dark humor about alcoholism). Also, Paul Newman's character constantly uses eye drops in the film to clear up his red eyes to hide his alcoholism from his clients. Newman came up with that idea, it wasn't scripted.
Sidney Lumet was a true American master. 12 Angry Men, Prince of the City, Serpico, The Offence, Dog Day Afternoon, Night Falls on Manhattan, Deathtrap.. god, too many great films to count.
Also, another great and underrated "laywer movie" is Norman Jewison's 1979 gem '...And Justice for All' with Al Pacino giving another all-time great performance.
yeah i was surprised this is what she watched. there are a lot of popular lawyer movies that happened in the 90's and maybe early thousands. so this one seems to get passed by for them.
@@Lazrael32 hey, I'm glad she picked the cream of the crop!
I remember when this came out. It was a huge deal. Everyone was talking about Newmans performance. Everyone could not believe he didn't win the Oscar.@@Lazrael32
Was going to recommend "And Justice" to her.
Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon are based on real people.
Oh my God, I didn't know you reacted to this! Such an underrated courtroom classic! Both Paul Newman and James Mason should have won the Oscars for their performances!
Also, did you spot Bruce Willis as a courtroom spectator near the end?
Some more great Paul Newman movies to watch are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Slap Shot, The Sting, Road to Perdition, The Towering Inferno, Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, Hud, and Absence of Malice (another legal movie).
Slapshot was filmed near where i live and it's always been a fun movie to watch!
Absence of Malice is an amazing movie.
Shakin’ the bushes, boss.
Color of Money
The Hudsucker Proxy.
Other legal movies to watch are:
To Kill a Mockingbird (considered THE best of all-time)
Spotlight (legal, true crime, journalism -- exposed the Catholic church scandal)
JFK (also true crime)
Paths of Glory (directed by Stanley Kubrick, also a war movie)
Kramer vs. Kramer
Witness for the Prosecution
Anatomy of a Murder (Jimmy Stewart from "It's a Wonderful Life")
Inherit the Wind
Judgment at Nuremberg
A Time to Kill (Matthew McConaughey, Samuel L. Jackson, Sandra Bullock)
Legally Blonde (Reese Witherspoon, law school movie)
The Crucible 1996 (about the Salem witch trials)
"Disorder in the court" The Three Stooges
@@yournamehere6002 She saw And Justice for All as a request.
@@yournamehere6002 It is indeed. Unfortunately, the reaction is not on YT or on Patreon yet.
@@bluebird3281
the best
"Whoever said orange is the new pink was WRONG." - Legally Blonde
One of the most brilliant pieces of acting on film. So damned good.
Jack Warden (lawyer helping Galvin) and James Mason (concannon) star together in supporting roles in the fun romantic comedy Heaven Can Wait starring Warren Beatty. It’s worth a review. I believe Beatty co-wrote, directed and even produced the movie too. Also stars Julie Christie.
ABSENCE OF MALICE is a powerful 'semi-courtroom' film with Paul Newman as a wronged character and snoopy reporter Sally Fields realizes she played a role. Excellent addition to one's film-lawyer-dom.
Frank's final argument to the jury (not shown in reaction) was a great moment in the film. At that moment, he thinks he might have lost the case because of the way the judge ruled on the evidence. He needs the jury to see past that. "You are the law" he tells them. The line has stuck with me since.
Some people in juries ignore what they are instructed and DO show biases, which can screw over the case.
The great Jack Warden played his friend, he was also in 12 Angry Men, the guy that wanted to get to the baseball game, thanks Mary!
The bishop was also in 12 angry men. He played the juror who was a painter.
Some southern hemisphere movies.
The Dish. The Castle. Once Were Warriors. Whale Rider. Goodbye Porkpie. Utu. Heavenly Creatures. Black Sheep.
This is one of my favorite Paul Newman films. He lost the Academy Award for this film, however, he won for "The Color of Money" over a decade later.
Not over a decade:this came out in 1982,COM about half a decade later🎩
So glad you got to watch this movie. It’s such a great movie, but the kind that gets overlooked as more time goes buy. Paul Newman is a national treasure, he was known early in his career as being extremely handsome, but his work late in his career really shows he was an actor, not just a face.
You'll love this film. Another Paul Newman excellent film is "Nobody's Fool/
Agreed. It’s one of Newman’s best performances and an absolute gem of a film.
I truely believe that if "Nobody's Fool" hadn't premired about the same time as "Forest Gump" it would be better appreciated.@@darryndifrancesco8346
I love that someone finally reacted to this movie.
For Paul Newman I also recommend Adsense of Malice and The Long Hot Summer
I’m so happy to see you react to The Verdict. What a great performance by Paul Newman. I recommend this movie to everyone I follow on YT. I love your channel.
Mary you should check out Paul Newman in the film Absence of Malice. Sally Field is in it too.
The judge is played by Milo O'Shea, an Irish born actor who eventually settled in New York. He has an amusing small role in "The Purple Rose Of Cairo" and larger parts in "The Playboys" (1992) and "The Matchmaker" (1997).
I think the actor you were recognizing was James Handy, who's a character actor who's been in a lot of stuff, like: Arachnophobia, Top Gun Maverick, Jumanji, Logan, and made guest actor appearances on a LOT of TV shows over the years.
I love The Verdict. The director, Sidney Lumet, the screenwriter and the superb cast are all at the top of their game. Paul Newman downplays all his charm and charisma to show us a loser character totally at the last dregs of his miserable life, grasping at a final chance to regain his dignity. And the entire film, with its measured pace and dark interiors, reflect the lawyer's despair. But Lumet also deploys a piece of subtle visual storytelling to hint at the lawyer's fight to regain his lost honor. He takes a Polaroid photo of the injured woman lying in her hospital bed. And as the film reveals the woman's condition, the lawyer sees not an easy payday, but a life worth fighting for. A wonderful scene, played without a line of dialogue.
This was a great reaction to follow, made more enjoyable when we learn that Mary has a legal background. I've been hoping that the RUclips community would discover this wonderful film. With Mary, we could not ask for a better person to comment on this film.
Movie is full of towering figures in acting... Newman, James Mason (this guy was an idol of probably everyone on the set including Paul Newman), Charlotte Rampling .. a who's who of the best character actors in history.. Jack Warden, Milo OShea, Joe Seneca. You could do a retrospective of James Mason's career and not be disappointed.
This movie was mentioned in Better Call Saul too.
Several very distinguished actors in this film. In the wake of DUNE having been featured on this channel, Charlotte Rampling went on to play the Reverend Mother in that film, which I considered perfect casting the moment I heard about it.
A Soldier’s Story is AWESOME and the cast is stellar. Trust me not many people if any have reacted to it but it’s amazing.
Paul Newman was nominated for the Oscar for this movie, and in most years would have stood an excellent chance of winning. But this came out in 1982, and even Dustin Hoffman, who in ANY normal year would have been guaranteed to win for Tootsie, stood no chance against Ben Kingsley's performance in the title role in Gandhi.
And Gandhi is one of those turgid, bloated, overly pious Oscar winners that nobody watches today. Because the Oscars are and always have been a bad joke.
@@gregghelmberger Cannot agree. The movie itself might (uncharitably) be described as you have done, but Kingsley's performance is an absolute miracle, and makes it worthwhile to watch the movie for the sake of that extraordinary piece of acting.
@@richardzinns5676 Pretty hard to sum up someones decades long struggle to change a government - a man in a dress is mach easier to swallow for many people.
I love love love that you've reacted to this amazing film. Thank you! (Yes, I was that dude who recommended it. 😅)
I'm sure many dudes recommended it.😅
More courtroom dramas worth watching are Witness for the Prosecution (1957), Anatomy of a Murder (1959), Inherit the Wind (1960) and Paths of Glory (1957).
His law partner was the baseball ticket juror in "Twelve Angry Men".
And the Boston bishop is the house painter in 12 Angry Men, guy who threatened to punch out Lee Cobb for talking smack to the old man.
The judge (Milo O Shea) also played a supreme court justice on the "The West Wing".
Some context would probably be helpful. This takes place in Boston. In Boston, especially back then, the Catholic Church is immensely powerful. Very rich. Lots of political connections. The judge was in the bag for the Church. He had no intention of being fair or impartial.
Yea, she'd know if she saw Spotlight. ;)
The bar where Paul Newman is playing pinball is the same bar as the one where Frank Pentangeli
almost gets murdered in Godfather 2. It's located in the East Village in NYC.
I know because I had many a drink there.
Paul Newman was nominated for the Best Actor Acadeny Award for this movie, and IMO should have won. In his lifetime he was nominated 10 times but won only once for 1987's The Color of Money. Other court room style movies include To Kill a Mockingbird, 12 Angry Men, The Trials at Nuremberg [1961], Inherit the Wind, Disorder in the Court [Three Stooges comedy], A Few Good Men, My Cousin Vinny, The Firm, The Caine Mutiny [Humphrey Bogart 1954]. Philedelphia [Tom Hanks 1993]....
She reacted to 12 Angry Men, A Few Good Men, and My Cousin Vinny and are on the channel.
One of my all-time favorite movies.
I second everyone saying Inherit the Wind, although the case isn't technically crime based. Spector by David Mamet is also a really underrated courtroom drama that I don't think many have seen despite it starring Pacino.
The Red Curtain ..starring Richard Greer and Bia Ling. an excellent perspective of how the Chinese law system works. and, the story line draws you in. you'll love it
Another great and often overlooked court case movie is A Civil Action with John Travolta . Also a new netflix movie with Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones is a pretty good court room drama .It’s called the Burial.
yes very good legal movie.
YES, The Verdict. One of my absolute favorite films ever.
This is one of my favorite lawyer movies. I don’t know why it isn’t covered more but you are the perfect one to do so. It first came out when I just started my legal career. (40 years ago-yikes) Very realistic in most respects if not in the procedural details. The pinball machine resonates with me as I would always play to get focused before a law exam.
A couple of notes: Frank breached an ethical duty when he failed to convey the settlement offer. While the judge here was over the top they will frequently “encourage” acceptance of settlement offers.
For another one I recommend “Body Heat” starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. Great neo film noir. Not so much a courtroom drama as a dark mystery with a legal setting. (When I was first admitted to the bar the judge quoted it.)
Again thanks for the reaction.
Actors: Frank's partner, Mickey, was played by Jack Warden. You know him from 12 Angry Men, where he acted as the younger man with baseball tickets burning in his pocket. The scary Attorney Ed Concannon was portrayed by British actor James Mason, with his very distinctive voice. The girl, Laura, was British actress Charlotte Rampling. The Judge, an odd one, Irish actor Milo O'Shea. Everybody kept their original accents.
You will also like "Absence of Malice". It has the same sort of feel to it and features Paul Newman. You will also see Sally Field (Mama Gump).
I can't believe you haven't seen The Rainmaker. I recommended it for you a long time ago. Its a lot like this movie.
In the U.S., an attorney is ethically REQUIRED to apprise his clients of any settlement offer made by the other side.
I can’t believe u did this movie… one of my favorites
Ah! I asked (begged) you a couple of times to give this film a try. So glad you have. I'm SURE you're going to like it very much!
Shoulda sent money... 😂
For compelling films about Lawyers: The Rainmaker, The Firm, Erin Brockovich.
For Crime / Mystery related films try: Jade, Basic Instinct, Dial M for murder (Hitchcock 1954) and the remake called A perfect Murder (1998)
Erin Brockovich is already on the channel.
Directed by the great Sidney Lumet. Lumet also directed one of my favorite movies of all time -another courtroom masterpiece, "12 Angry Men." Movie trivia -Jack Warden (Mickey) was Juror #7 in 12 Angry Men. One of Paul Newman's best performances.
Recommendations:
A Civil Action (1998), starring John Travolta
The Rainmaker (1997), starring Matt Damon
The Insider (1999), starring Russell Crowe & Al Pacino
And Justice for All (1979), starring Al Pacino
Have you ever seen A Time to Kill (1996), The Client (1994), or The Pelican Brief(1993)? They are all based on novels by John Grisham a Lawyer and Mississippi State Congressmen turned novelist.
She saw A Time to Kill
Also Edward Binns played the Bishop, he was also in 12 angry men one of the jurors
So was Jack Warden (Newman's law partner)
Mary...a couple of interesting facts you might have overlooked...Sydney Lumet also directed 12 Angry Men and Jack Warden ( the lawyer helping Gavin) was juror #7 ( he had the tickets to the baseball game) in 12 Angry Men
Other good law films: The Firm, The Judge, The Rainmaker, To Kill A Mockingbird, Runaway Jury, A Time To Kill, The Client. Philadelphia, 12 Angry Men, A Few Good Men, My Cousin Vinny.
She already reacted to 12 Angry Men, A Few Good Men, and My Cousin Vinny. They're on the channel. And "A Time To Kill" was done as a request but isn't on the channel yet.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" - great movie with a legal bent
another great movie with some court "To Kill a Mockingbird"
Another "legal movie" that I've already recommended under a different reaction is "Runaway Jury" with John Cusack, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman and Rachel Weisz.
If you're interested in more movies by director Sidney Lumet (who already gave you "12 Angry Men" before "The Verdict"), then I want to strongly recommend his final masterpiece "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead", but also some of his highly respected work from the 70s, especially "Network".
I am not in law but do like shows and movies about court room drama. This movie is top five in my favorites. My favorite quote from this great film is, “ the courts don’t give you justice, they give you a chance at justice.”
Two legal films with Harrison Ford: "Presumed Innocent" and "Regarding Henry."
This is an academy award nominated screenplay written by the inimitable David Mamet adapted from the novel by Barry Reed, an accomplished medical malpractice lawyer from Massachusetts. It's probably Newman's best performance. Nearly every character is corrupt or corruptible.
If you crave something from your law-school days, I highly recommend The Paper Chase, about first-year Law students at Harvard. You don't even have to make it an official posting, just watch on yer own time (i know, what 'own time', lol).
She may as well make a dollar while relaxing. lol.
Both the movie and the tv series (if one can get their hands on it).
Amazing! My brother in law was a highly accomplished family law attorney. He said that the legal accuracy of The Verdict is a little dodgy but that doesn't keep it from being one of the greatest legal dramas ever made. Thanks so much for reacting to one of my faves!
A bit late to the comments, BUT, the funeral home section, and the section where Galvin pops open the mailbox at the nurses house for the phone bill, were shot in my neighborhood (same neighborhood as Good Will Hunting) .. watched both scenes as they were filming, the mailbox scene was the family house of friends we hung around with. After filming was done, Paul Newman generously walked to the folks watching, shook hands, and signed autographs. A truly nice, humble man. He was nominated for an Oscar, but didn’t win, going against Kingsley, O’Toole, Hoffman, and Lemmon … no first names necessary!!!!
Ghandi, My Favorite Year, Tootsie, and Missing … as well as this flick, Hollywood has maybe 1 decent picture a year now. So sad.
Next to 'Anatomy of a Murder', 'The Verdict' is a great legal drama. Both are so tightly well made.
For more James Mason (opposing Attorney Concannon), try Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959) with Cary Grant, George Cukor’s A Star is Born (1954) with Judy Garland and Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita (1962) with Shelley Winters. He also played WWII German Field Marshall in two (North Africa theater) war films, The Desert Fox (1951) with Jessica Tandy and The Desert Rats (1953) with Richard Burton.
Other court case films: "To Kill a Mockingbird" (defense lawyer considered the greatest hero in American film history) and "Witness for the Prosecution."
For courtroom scenes, I'd recommend The Rainmaker with Matt Damon. Another John Grisham novel adaptation you might like with a family law scene is The Client.
You might also enjoy The Insider and A Civil Action, two movies about real class action lawsuits.
I think this movie came out just before the Catholic church was sued over the child abuse cases. It's so interesting seeing the Cardinals sweating over a nuisance lawsuit just before they get slammed in court.
For more Jack Warden (Mickey), try And Justice for All (1979) with Al Pacino, Shampoo (1975) with Warren Beatty and Being There (1979) with Peter Sellers. I think you may have already seen him as baseball loving Juror #7 in 12 Angry Men (1957) with Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb.
Jack Warden is also terrific
in a dual role in 1980's "Used Cars".
She would love Being There.
When I saw this in the theatre back in 1982, at the end someone yelled out '"Don't answer that!"
Courtroom cinema, maybe not as intense as "The Verdict" but worth viewing": "Inherit the Wind", "and Justice for All", "The Lincoln Lawyer", and "To Kill a Mockingbird...!
A really underrated courtroom drama is The Rainmaker with Matt Damon and Danny DeVito
What about witness for the prosecution and 12 angry men?
At 24:50, as soon as the judge started asking his own questions, and not for clarification purposes on questions posed, the lawyer should have immediately claimed "Apprehension of Bias" and had the judge recused.
Absence of Malice is another excellent legal movie with Paul Newman - excellent!
Fun fact. If you keep a sharp eye during one of the courtroom scenes you’ll find a pre-famous Bruce Willis sitting in the background.
Charlotte Rampling…what a beauty!!
What a great reaction. This has always been one of my favorite films and one of my favorite Paul Newman performances. He should have won the academy award. The small but consequential role of Lindsay Crouse as the admitting nurse is one the the most gut wrenching performances in film. You feel her pain.
As an aside, we have Jack Warden and Edward Binns appearing in the movie. They were two of the jurors in Lumet’s first movie which you’ve already reacted to, 12 Angry Men.
I’d like to recommend another courtroom drama, not as well done necessarily as the Lumet films, but gripping nonetheless. It is called Class Action and it stars Gene Hackman and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, who are both superb.
this and To Kill A Mocking bird are the best legal dramas ever
The movie that introduced me to Jameson's Whisky!
Hi Mary, you've found a thriller today. I hope that you become a fan of " Old Blue Eyes " and seek out his movies. By the way, he graciously excepted judging the group of beauties in our high school yearbook. He did a fine job. His spaghetti sauces are good, and the profits go to charities. As is often shouted in unison on the streets of Kyoto, Japan: " Hey! "
RUclips video: 2017.3.26京都橘高校吹奏楽部京都さくらパレード交款コンサートパーカッション
I'm a big fan of court room dramas also. The one I remember that was really impactful to me was 'The Life of David Gale'. It's been a long time since I've seen it but I think it still holds up.
I think I saw this one when it came to cable TV back in the day, but if I did I haven't seen it since, and this will be a nice refresher.
I was mistaken. I have never seen this movie.
The Firm - with Tom Cruz
Good to see you watching a trial movie and one that is not watched much anymore. And its a good one too. But the two absolute best trial movies ever made are biopics: Steven Spielberg's, AMISTAD and Oliver Stone's, JFK. People today, however, don't seem to know about them, as this is the only reason I can imagine they are not being recommended. But trust me. You will be blown away by both of them.
JFK is basically an imagining by Stone - it even says in the beginning is speculation.
Fantastic reaction! I submit the film Soapdish. Not because there is any legal drama, but because I want you to see and react to it.
Excellent movie! Thanks Mary!
This is one of my favorite movies… so glad you decided to watch it….
Great film with a great script from David Mamet.
So glad you watched this Mary . It is one of Paul Newman's better roles his redemption arc is ... well you've watched it so you'll know what I mean . All the best to you and yours .
An excellent true story courtroom drama:
"Murder In The First" (1995) Kevin Bacon, Christian Slater
Though not movies, The Practice followed by Boston Legal are great legal TV shows you should check out if you haven't already. Might be too long for a reaction but a good watch nonetheless.
Hey, Paul Newman is smooth with the ladies!
You might not realise this but Paul Numan was a super star leading man when he was alive
Same director for 12Angry Men also. Sidney Lumet.
Since you like courtroom dramas you should watch “Where the Crawdads Sing” It’s also a love story.
The regular price varies, but 40% is more common than a third nowadays.
Great to see someone finally reviewing this gem. Have you reviewed Cool Hand Luke with (young) Newman?
There is a reactor Madison K. Thames who reacts to a lot of older movies, westerns etc, and I know at least a few Newman movies.
Very intelligent analysis of the films.
@@Cheepchipsable - yes, I follow her too.
"The Verdict" is from 1982.
Another Paul Newman law based movie that you might want to check out is 'Absence of Malice'.
Great reaction Mary, please consider 'Presumed Innocent' for a courtroom drama with Harrison Ford. Thanks.
I would love to see you react to The Lincoln Lawyer' starring Matthew McConaughey , William H. Macy, and Marisa Tomei. I think you would really like that one! I really enjoy your reactions !
I remember watching this movie in high school, but I can’t remember what class it was (It’s not like we had legal courses in high school).
