  • Hey everyone! This video is about how I got ready for a day at work in Disneyworld performing as Princess Jasmine. Special thanks to @ellacrazycookie for submitting this question to me on instagram! I hope this video gives you insight into what my mornings were like before work. Not everyone will get a chance to work at Disney and so I hope this video gives you that "living vicariously" through someone feeling, haha, which can be fun sometimes. :D I talk about putting on the costumes, makeup, wig, etc.
    Hope you enjoy the video! God bless! xo

    I work in costuming at Disneyland, and performers (across the whole resort) definitely still use the blue smocks! :)

      McKenna to work as costuming, do you need any sort of experience???

      ahhhhh! I love that you commented this! LOL that's awesome, funny how they do that in Disneyland too, not just Disneyworld.

      Not really, although it does help. Costuming at Disneyland is completely different than at Disney World (although they have the same end-goal of course) but if you ever want to know more you can message me here!

      This comment makes me smile.. honestly, it always made me happy to ask people to help me, especially if I knew it was somebody who loved the princesses & perhaps it was a chance for them to have a memory, especially if they didn't work in entertainment.. :D I know I remember asking all those people for help, so hopefully they remember too! LOL

    It's simple really... The reason people treated you better as Princess Jasmine. There was an experiment done once where a man dressed as a homeless person was pretending to have trouble breathing and collapsed on the ground and nobody helped him. Later the same man dressed up as a wealthy looking businessman and did the same routine in public. Nearly every single bystander stopped to help. It's programmed in our minds to help those above us. Also… You were a Disney princess. Even if others know that you are not actually the real princess, that Disney magic always remains. Somewhere in their minds you were still princess Jasmine

    as a former cast member i do have to say this about the fur characters and why at times they were treated differently. i was a custodial cast member and we were treated like nothing compared to entertainment and any other role because we had to clean bathrooms. but any way the reason why at times the fur actors/actresses were treated in a not so caring way at times was because there were many who had bad attitudes or came off as though they didn't want to be bothered with after being done with a long set of being in the hot "costumes". some would scowl at you when you spoke to them so wouldn't say anything at all nor would they hold the door open for anyone else because they were entertainment and we were like small potatoes. but i would always be kind to any and everyone. and try to sit and eat lunch and ask about their day and what it was like to be in the role they were in. but there were those who went to a performing arts school and did theater since they were like 3 who were the worst people ever.

    I feel like the blush thing is universal across all the performing arts 😂 we have a joke at my dance studio stemming from one of the older teachers going around and putting crazy blush on all of us with the same, straw like brush!!

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +2

      HA! that is so funny! lol about it being one of the older teachers---maybe blush was big back in the day?!?! It was ALWAYS one of the "older lady" cosmetologists who was insisting on more blush...

    Hi Jennifer, I remember when I worked @ WDW (merchandise) and ALWAYS when I had the opportunity, I hold the door for performers playing fur characters, even though they're sweaty or so. They handle a lot with those heavy costume, so I always though that is the minimum just to make their day a little bit easier...

      I didn't find it difficult at all. Not everyone I interviewed with was hired, but I think if you put yourself out there as "Disney material", you'll be hired.
      I found it a wonderful experience and some of my dearest friends were made there. I recommend it as a great place to work in your late teens and early/mid 20s or as a retiree. It doesn't really pay enough for anyone older than that though, I find. :)

    I took the all-day Backstage Magic Tour (2008?) at WDW that at the time went behind the scenes of Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and DHS. While at Epcot, one of the areas on the tour was Costuming. One of the stops in Costuming was the dressing/makeup/wig room for the characters. We were able to watch Jasmine and Belle get themselves ready to go on set. We saw the CM portraying Jasmine drive up to the building we were in and exiting her vehicle wearing the harem pants and a t-shirt with hair in a ponytail. She then proceeded to put on the wig cap, do her makep, remove her t-shirt (Jasmine bra underneath), then put on the wig. When we arrived, Belle was already sitting at her makeup table in just her petticoat and corset putting on her makeup. Was this the usual dressing/makeup/wig room used by all the Epcot face characters, or was it strictly used for the benefit of the tour groups?

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +2

      Soo soo funny how you mentioned Jasmine w/her white t shirt.. (mine was always white).. when I wasn't wearing a smock, it was a white v neck t shirt. lol.. they still use those?! of course. so funny. It probably was the usual wig room used by all Epcot face characters.. def not just used for tour groups--- no.. there was only one room where all that was done.. awwwww... you are bringing back some of my fondest memories. I LOOVED the tour groups at Epcot. They always seemed the happiest and the guides there always seemed to be the best and most informative. So glad you were able to do that!

    OMG I know this is a old video but you are so right when I worked for DisneyLand from 1997 - 2001 when I was in collage it was the same I would play Donald Duck or, Piglit and, the same would happen to me everybody was nice to Mickey, and Minney but when I was piglit nobody was nice. When I was Donald Duck it was so so I was treated a bit better. I loved working for Disney and, I am glad they helped me with college so I can not complain.

    Hi Jennifer! Question: would you have to buy the makeup products yourself, did they give you money for the makeup, or did they already provide you with the makeup? In that case then did you use drugstore or high end makeup products?

  • @emmacrooke807
    @emmacrooke807 7 лет назад +12

    I would've held the door open for you whether you were playing Pluto, Ratio, Pocahontas or Princess Jasmine! Do you think the cast members were told to treat the face characters nicer than the fur characters, or do you think it was just a subconscious thing that they did because of the 'status' of the face characters?

    • @emmacrooke807
      @emmacrooke807 7 лет назад +2

      That was supposed to say Rafiki not ratio. Sorry about that.

    • @OakesPrincess

      lol, I gotcha, I do that all the time w/my phone

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +5

      thank you for the sweet thought that you'd of held the door open for me!! haha, oh man. I'll never forget the difference in treatment, it stuck out soo very strongly to me because it was such a drastic difference.. the amount of smiles and the lengths of "niceness" that people went through, it was overwhelming...so then when it would stop when I was a fur character, I remember feeling really depressed... why couldn't people be so super nice all of the time?? it was a good lesson. Whether it was subconscious or not though, that's hard. I don't believe they were told to treat face characters better, no, I think that's something people did all on their own. Perhaps a person/human face was more relatable to them. You have more in common with Rapunzel than you do Rafiki/Pluto.. there's more of an "imagined bond" there... so you get excited to see Rapunzel, but less excited when it's just that crazy moneky with a sweaty person in it. lol.

      The wig wasn't that heavy, thankfully (I hear the new one is better in that regard though?! It looks way more comfy) but no, it wasn't heavy because it was mostly filled w/a sponge .. it was like a giant sponge and hair just covered it..it wasn't actually all hair, if that makes sense. xo GOOD Question, people often ask it. xo

      I never did because it was so "full/heavy" that I would've felt a bit clownish had I done it "before".. plus since they "built in time" to do it at work, I think that helped, I just took forever, lol.. plus, I will say, cosmetology always wanted to give their 2 cents in what you did and how you did it, lol.

I would definitely open the door or help anybody.... no matter who they are. Royalty or not.... everyone deserves compassion. Thanks for answering the questions. gee you answer them so well. so intriguing. love your videos as always, Jennifer. • @ErikaBardere

      Not that this should matter, but I think when you are a princess it is very clear you are a woman so people like to hold the door open for females, but when you are a male or in a male costume or just a costume where nobody can tell, they might just assume you are not a female and be less likely to hold the door open for you
      I don't think it should necessarily be that way, but just that if you were Minnie Mouse, it might have been different than Pluto or Goofy or whoever. Women can be any of those but since the outside is male, it might be a subconscious thing to only do it for women

      thanks, Mark! hmmm... just without the head, though I will say, the second I was out of guest's view, the first thing that came off was the head, so very rarely did a cast member see me in full costume w/the head on unless they were backstage RIGHT when I was coming off set.. because the thing is so heavy and a bit hard to breath in, so again, very little chance for anyone to see me w/it on. :D oi!

What kinds of questions people asked me when in character is a great one.. honestly, I forget a lot of them, hahaha, but of course, the number one question was: "Where is Abu?" It was a lot more, "Hello! What's your name?! What kingdom are you from?! I'm from Agrabah! It's about an hour away by magic carpet...did you come here on a magic carpet?! No? How did you get here then?! What's a car?!" lolol. That sort of thing... people were generally very shy, I found! Adults were more just taking photos of their kids and the kids always seemed to clam up.. I found myself to be the one asking all of the questions.. often I was asked to sing "A Whole new world" ... I'll definitely have to elaborate more in an upcoming video! xo

    Hi Jennifer! Who is the boss or next step up that manages the face characters? Do they observe you while you're 'on set'? Do they wear a Disney uniform or are they dressed in street clothes so they're not noticed?

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +3

      The Entertainment managers were in charge of us.. they were always checking in, but I forget the titles of all the Disney staff honestly---there was some sort of a laison who was above us, managing our time--they would make sure that the character attendants were on top of us---but usually character attendants were yelling at us to get ready and be ready (not that we weren't watching the clock ourselves, but you know, just in case).. then above the character attendant was a laison who was watching and above them was the entertainment manager, but if there was ever a big problem, it fell on the entertainment manager for our area, there were always several entertainment managers walking around doing all sorts of jobs related to characters. We were definitely observed on set by EVERYONE---not only guests and attendants (anybody could squeal on you for any improper behavior) but also people from casting who weren't dressed in any sort of uniform, so again, always on your best behavior.. so I'd say both types observed you, those in uniform but also those in street clothes---it was always a wonderful feeling to find out after you got off of set that there was someone dressed in street clothes who observed you and gave you high marks/regards for a performance well done---that was wonderful. Though I once got in trouble for giving a child a high five, because the manager believed that a princess would never give a high five to a child, haha, so I never gave anyone a high five again, but I believed Jasmine was an exceptional princess in that way. She wore pants and leaped over buildings on a pole.. to me, she'd of given a high five but I think they wanted me to keep her very regal, so I did. xo

      @kristacarlson4138 7 лет назад

      So interesting! I'm a behind the scenes junky so I've always wondered how it all works at Disney. I agree that Princess Jasmine might give a high five. She's just that kind of girl! Thanks for the info! Makes me take a whole different perspective on the Disney employees. Next time I visit, I will have even more respect for face and fur characters. Knowing this info will never fade the magic for me though and it's our little secret. ;-)

    Could you already have your makeup done when you got to work or did it need to be done there?

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +5

      It had to be done there, if I'm not mistaken, that was actual protocol. I think it was seen as "getting into your costume" technically.. plus, you didn't want it to wear off too soon.. you needed it to last all day long so the fresher your makeup was, the better. xo

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +3

      I don't know if you'd of gotten in trouble having it on earlier, that is fuzzy in my memory.. but nobody put their makeup on before work. So I think there must've been some sort of protocol about it. Even the people with awful skin didn't do it before work. lol. so that's what makes me think they told us not to. haha. :D

    I actually have a question I've tried to find in your videos and through Google but couldn't sorry if you've already answered this question. Is there anything I can do to improve my chances before auctions. I'm working on dance skills but anything else? Thank you so much. I have been binge watching your videos and they are definitely calming my nerves before auditions

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +1

      This is a tough question and would take awhile to answer, hahaha. I feel I could write a novel on this subject.. it's also hard because I feel like everyone's challenges are so unique and individual to that person. Whereas one person might need a simple word of encouragement, told to just smile--to relax and have fun, another person is going to need a heck of a lot more work. haha. I usually tell people dance skills because you want to have something tangible.. your looks is something that you can change to a degree, but if you're 6 feet tall and all they need are girls in the 5'3-5'7" range, then... no matter how great of a princess they might make, it won't matter. But her dance skills----that gets your foot in the door of Disney entertainment and then who knows.. maybe they'll need a tall villain to dance in the castle show.. etc. Dance skills---acting skills.. animation skills, these are all things to work on.. having excellent posture---another thing people should work on.. how you carry yourself.. I would most definitely watch how the characters carry themselves.. have an idea of who you think you could realistically portray and then do your best to study them. Smiling the entire audition, that's a big one. A Disney princess smiles 24-7, so being that way at your audition is a way to show casting that you have a great smile and you know how to use it. Having a warm, loving disposition. The princesses have that naturally, but how well do you exude that and how well does that transfer to the casting directors who are considering you?? These are things to think about. I hope this helps! I wish you the very best and hope you're cast. Many girls have auditioned multiple times before finally getting cast, though some girls get it on the first round. Thank you so much for watching my channel! xo

      cricket34 you are so sweet and made my day! I wouldn't say this is my everyday look, because I have 2 kids ages 1 & 3, so getting dolled up is very challenging most days, but when I film for youtube, I try to not look like a total hot mess, which is probably more realistic. it's not yet noon but I'm still in my pj's with no makeup typing this, lol. but I should probably do my everyday makeup "get ready with me" look for how I get ready on the weekends when my husband helps watch the kids, or just nights out with my husband. ❤ thank you for watching!

    Aww poor Pluto! That's so sad, I would hold the door open for any cast member :) or not cast member lol. I was going to ask....although I think you sort of answered it when you said how other cast members would give you gifts when you played Jasmine but When you were behind the scenes would other cast members stop you and ask to get a photo with you etc, was that allowed? :)

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +1

      It wasn't allowed backstage unless you were up against a background where nobody could tell where you were, for example, a white wall would've been fine, but a "behind the scenes/backstage" looking photo, where it was obviously backstage was not fine.. though nowadays w/smart phones the way they are, I wouldn't be surprised if they just nixed the whole backstage photos altogether. But I remember we took taking photos backstage for sure. Again, just a generic background like a white wall. Nobody ever stopped and asked me for a photo though, any photos I did take backstage were always with others in the entertainment department already.. haha.. good question though! xo

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +2

      +Andrew Taylor I feel awkward telling people what I made, despite no longer working there. We did make several dollars above minimum wage, it differed person to person, the years you'd been with the company, what assets you offered, etc.. could you dance? What all shows were you in? Did you train other characters? Many things affected income, but I felt I was very decently paid considering I just stood around smiling for photos and playing princess all day. Lol. I made as much as a McDonald's swing manager. Not enough to live without a roommate, but with a roommate, def comfortable. 😅😆

      elle smith I'm pretty sure the bottom part of the wig is attached to the dress, so it takes the pressure off the neck. I'm a princess for a party business, and my wig is so heavy when not attached to the dress.

    When you were eating lunch as princess jasmine and random people wanted to sit w you, did you perform for them? Did you act as princess jasmine would or how Jennifer would? You were technically "off set" so were you required to perform for other cast members?

    • @sugarplum2503
      @sugarplum2503 7 лет назад +1

      You eat lunch backstage in the cast area, I think they give you food, or you would change into non princess jasmine hair and clothes if you wanted to get lunch in the parks (just going off what I've seen from these videos). I think you could sit with cast member friends or just alone or with other face or fur characters on their break. Rachel said in a different video even though you were on break and backstage when you were dressed at A PRINCESS people would kinda expect you to be nice and still kinda expect you to preform. Whereas when you were just in grey clothes you didn't have those expectation on you.

    • @OakesPrincess

      I didn't perform for people during lunch, haha, it gets to be a bit much, haha, and I would act as Jennifer and introduce myself. I don't think they were interested in Jennifer though, hahaha. Jennifer wasn't as cool as Jasmine, hahaha. I wanted them to know I was a normal person with normal problems, but was just blessed with a cool job. Thankfully there were some people who were interested beyond the costume but as for being required to perform for other cast members we weren't required, thankfully.. that would've been too hard. hahaha.. my cheeks used to hurt from smiling so much on set, hahaha. But by smiling at other cast members, you could really brighten someone's day, to them, it wasn't Jennifer who smiled, it was Jasmine. But that also made it hard for when you just wanted to zone out. haha. xo

      great question.. that depends on the casting director you see at your audition and how big of a gap you have.. if it's hardly noticeable, they won't care, but if it's definitely noticeable, it could affect you only because it might make you less likely to resemble a certain princess.. especially if the cartoon didn't have the gap.. :/ I personally love character traits like that.. it sets you apart. Anna Paquin is one of my fave actresses and she's known for having a slight gap.

    I'm sorry if you've answered this before, but I understand that whilst you're working as a character, you are not allowed to tell people who you are - how strict is this? Are you allowed to tell family, or can you at least tell people that you are a princess?
    And also, when does this confidentiality end? Obviously you talk a lot about behind the scenes, are you freely allowed to do this once you are not employed by Disney anymore? And what are the rules about taking photos or posting photos of yourself in your costume?

    • @madelinebeatlesgirl
      @madelinebeatlesgirl 7 лет назад +1

      ITSxDARCIE I have some friends who used to be Disney princesses and all I know is that they have to say "tbt" or "I love being friends with (character)" when they post on Instagram!

    • @OakesPrincess
      @OakesPrincess  7 лет назад +1

      You're allowed to tell your family/friends.. I'm in a funny place because I was a character before RUclips was a thing, before smart phones existed, etc... I no longer work for Disney, so I'm not under their authority. That being said however.... it is a bit scandalous that I make these types of videos because I'm ..."spilling the beans" on Santa claus not being real?!?!? However---most kids aren't on RUclips without a parent around (or they shouldn't be).. and this channel isn't really for kids, it's for people looking for audition advice/tips/inspo.. Question and answer.. I also review Disney attractions/restaurants/characters, Disney mom stuff, etc.. I used to say "friends with" when I worked there.. but afterwards I began to work in commercial stuff here in Orlando and the casting directors had me put on my acting resume that I did "live theater" performing as Princess Jasmine at Disney.. I looked at my time at Disney much differently. In the acting/film/tv world, theme park work, even at Disney, is looked down upon... so my time as Jasmine though a little cool to some folks, was a "low art form" to the snobbish actors who had "real talent." hahaha.. to say things like, "Oh I was friends with Jasmine" would've sounded corny. I stopped saying "friends with" after that. Also, one of my favorite Aladdins I worked with moved to Los Angeles and auditions as an actor regularly and writes for different shows (E! is a channel he's worked at) and he's done other sorts of production jobs, etc... once you step into that side of entertainment, you don't look at Disney the same, I guess.. to say "friends with" sounds really silly to "real actors" and "real showbiz" folks.. so I guess I just sort of left that behind when I left Disney really... also it's been several years for me since I've worked for Disney so in a sense I feel a bit removed from entertainment. Though there are still many similar things going on today that went on back then, it's a new place... new protocols .. heck, they have rules regarding social media.. back then, we didn't. Still.. Jasmine will always have been a very special friend of mine, I don't mind calling her my friend, but in a way I'm disconnected because I say "I performed Jasmine at Disney".. sorry for such a long message, it's late and I think I'm half asleep typing. lol.

Also, thank you for your sweet message! DCP IS GREAT if you can get in!!! I'm so glad to hear you're a dancer! Disney needs dance talent! If your princess jasmine they treat you nice, if you’re Pluto or some other furry character they don’t treat you nice at all, that’s not fair they should treat you the same, everybody should be treated equally. Why can’t they treat you nice no matter what? I don’t get it, i’m totally blind and being blind sometimes it can be a challenge but I get through it. I love Disney too, in the diverse world of Disney they treat you equally so why can’t it be like that in the real world?
