    Your video was a lifesaver! My husband was ready to give up on getting the cartridge out. He had broken out the plastic thinking that was part of the reason the cartridge wasn't moving. When we realized the plastic tool wouldn't work without the plastic on the cartridge we thought we'd never get it out. I found your video and the needle nose pliers and screwdriver had it out in less than a minute. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

    Thank you so much. Yours was about the fifth video I watched trying to figure out how to get the cartridge out of our Moen faucet. We didn't have the 'tool' yet because we hadn't bought a new cartridge yet as didn't know which one to buy, watched closely as to how to break it loose, did it with some larger needle nosed pliers, back and fourth till about a 360 degrees, then pulled with pliers on it, and out it came. YEAH!!!

    Al,
    Thanks so much for being of assistance - like a helpful neighbor, friend, or uncle. This one little trick in this video of using two screwdrivers, a pair of pliers, or something similar to loosen the cartridge was exactly what worked. I had been stymied by this repair at the last stage of getting the darn thing out. In fact, I didn't even know what it was exactly. And now... now it seems extremely simple, and why was I ever confused to begin with.
    Thanks for the guiding hand.

      The problem was, in order to get the "tool", you have to buy a cartridge -- but I had no idea which model it should be.
      On another subject, any thoughts on dealing with mold? I just found wet carpet in my closet, pulled it up and scraped and cleaned, only to find rotted wood. This closet is directly behind the tub/shower, and thus probably the source of water is the joint between the tub and tile on the adjacent wall to the shower head, or, worse, porous grout on the wall.

    • @TheOldkid888
      @TheOldkid888  7 лет назад

      Hello yutu tuyu,
      The 1225 cartridge works on the basis of pulling out first to turn the water and then turning left or right for hot or cold. This cartridge is found in all single lever faucets for kitchen and bathroom sinks. It is also found in bath and shower.
      The 1225 cartridge is found in bath and shower as well, but works on the principal of simply turning it counterclockwise to turn it on and increase the temperature. You do not pull it out to turn on the water.
      It is used on posi-temp faucets where the temperature is balanced and doesn't change when the water is running while another fixture is used in the house.
      Hope this helps.
      I know javex and water combination will work to kill mold. The thing about javex is it must be mixed with water in order to work properly. I believe it is a 70/30 combination. Straight javex will not do the job as many people think pure is better. Be sure to have a window open and a fan as it gives off a strong odour. Ventilation is important and rubber gloves as well. A friend of mine uses a combination of tea tree oil and water and a spray bottle. They are into herbal remedies. I use some myself, but have never tried tee tree oil except to relieve burns and heal cuts. Little tip for you. If you get a small burn; apply a drop or two and the pain leaves within a minute. Simply amazing how it works like this.
      You should press the walls where the tiles are and check to see if any of the wall is soft. You may have to do a little repair. If the grout is bad you should scrape it out as best as possible and regrout the joints.
      I have started using grout with epoxy in it. It dries faster and doesn't absorb water like the cement based grout does. Excellent product!
      Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! Al

      Hello Edward;

    Thanks for the 2-screwdriver idea. I didn't have the Moen tool. Instead of two screwdrivers, a pair of long nose vise grips fit in there just right and I was able to twist the cartridge loose. Without twisting that thing first, it's impossible to get it to pull out. It was really stuck in there.

      Makes all the difference in the world when it comes to removing the cartridge. I have heard about people getting on the counter top and pulling as hard as possible to remove the cartridge. Simply giving the cartridge a turn back and forth will allow the cartridge to slide out easily as you know.

      Hello Harold;
      You are more then welcome!
      Sometimes the water can be a little hard and will cause the cartridge to become tighter then normal and the plastic tool won't do the trick; so I use the screwdrivers or needle nose and a little persuasion and it does the job!

      Hello Jim,
      You're welcome!
      I am glad it did! Sometimes the little plastic tool doesn't do the job, but a few screwdrivers or needle nose pliers will work as far as turning the cartridge. And it has to be turned back and forth before trying to remove it. Makes all the difference in the world!

    Thank you for your video, which gave me some insight as to why my bathroom sink faucet handle is stuck (mineral deposits, hard water). Over time, the handle began to be very stiff and difficult to turn, to the point that it won't turn at all. I assume that I'm going to have to replace the cartridge and probably use the pliers to loosen up the existing one so it can be removed? Thanks again!

      You are more than welcome!
      Water with lots of minerals can play havoc on the faucets!
      You will have to replace the cartridge. You can try the plastic tool that comes with the new cartridge first to see if you can turn it and then you may have to go the the needle nose to turn it if not. Once you have gotten it to move back and forth you should be all set to pull it out.and install the new one.

      Hello Bryan,
      You're welcome!
      The biggest thing that makes the removal of the cartridge easy is turning it back and forth and breaking the seal between cartridge and the faucet body before trying to pull it out.
      I have heard stories where people actually got on top of their countertops and tried pulling the cartridge out. Kind of funny when you picture it in your mind.
      They can be difficult at times for sure, but persistence pays off.

    I am struggling with a 1225 cartridge on a sink faucet which was installed 2005. I'm one of the people who was on my knees on top of the vanity. Still isn't out. Trying to make things easier for my Mom but I think I broke her faucet. Have tried the plastic piece, have tried the puller. It will come out about an inch and then won't budge. Vinegar, WD40?

    • @TheOldkid888
      @TheOldkid888  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Misabu Buffa,
      Sounds like there is a piece of rubber in the faucet body. You will have to keep turning the cartridge a full 360 degrees and try and break the rubber. It will let go for you eventually. I have come across many such as this.
      Turning it back and forth while pulling on it will help.

    Having a problem in that both plastic "ears" have broken off the old cartridge so the plastic tool (or needlenose, etc.) can't nudge/twist the cartridge. Any suggestions for loosening the cartridge?

    • @TheOldkid888
      @TheOldkid888  9 лет назад +1

      Hello Kevin;
      You have to get something in the cartridge somehow to turn it.
      Once it turns; you are all set. Then you can pull it out.
      You will have to get 2 pointed tools similar to the screwdrivers and get them
      jammed in there to enable you to twist them. If you could get someone to push the tools into the cartridge and you try turning it; it may help. Wish I could help more!

    Thanks for the vid. But still having probs.
    The stem of the old cartridge pulls up a half inch or so, and makes a metallic sound. Sprayed PBR and tapped the stem -- did both of these things several times over the course of an hour, and still no resolution.
    Thinking of buying the removal tool tomorrow and trying that.
    Anyone have other ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

      Hello Larry,
      Sorry to hear you are still having a problem.
      They can be a bit difficult at times.
      Will the cartridge completely turn around 360 degrees for you? Once you get it up the half an inch you could try turn it then. I haven't come across this problem before as far as the metal sound goes. Once you get it turning around, it should pull out for you. It is possible that there could be a piece of an old screw in there jamming it and making the sound. Be interested to find out what it is once you get it out.
      Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the project! Al

      Try turning completely around a few times if possible. More than likely the o-ring or gasket is jamming the cartridge in there. Sometimes you have get a good grip on it with a pair of pliers and give it some serious strain to remove them. Turning it around a few times should help you out a little.
      After you remove it be sure to check inside the faucet with a flashlight to make sure there is no debris left behind from the old cartridge. If it is difficult to remove; there will more than likely be a few small pieces of matter.
      Thanks for commenting and I hope everything works out for you! Al

      You will need to use two screwdrivers or a pair of needle nose pliers and slide a wrench or something like that in between the screwdrivers as in this video. This will move the body of the cartridge back and forth and allow it to loosen up enough to be taken out with the pliers.
      Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the repair! Al

    • @TheOldkid888
      @TheOldkid888  9 лет назад

      Hello misterdinkly;
      You should be able to to turn it with the two screwdrivers or needle nose with a pry bar of some sort such as a crescent wrench in between while holding the screwdrivers.
      I wouldn't try drilling it out as you may damage the faucet body and then you would have to replace the faucet itself...

    I have a danze single handle faucet, and the handle falls down on its own and shuts off the water, do you know a cure for this?...thanks...

      Is it low water pressure maybe? Is it in an apt building a few floors up? A house on top of a hill maybe?

      Sorry PEI I missed this one. generally it is the amount of lubricant on the cartridge. Too much and this happens. Saw it happen on a few different brands myself. Moen included. I generally just take the cartridge out and remove a little from the inside part of it. The weight of the handle alone will make this happen.

    Thank you so much for this video - our cartridge must have dried out, and your video helped solve this. Thanks again for the tips; larger needle nose pliers did the trick. : )

      Hello Heather B;
      You are more then welcome!
      I am glad it worked out well for you!
      Sometimes the faucet grease dries out and they do very sticky, but with a pair of needle nose or 2 screwdrivers and a little persuasion; it does come out for you!

    I can not find the name brand of my facet. Will any cartridge work?

      Hello Christopher;
      Does your handle on the faucet simply pull out and turn to the left for hot and right for cold? If it does it is probably a Moen. If the handle rotates like on a ball then it is a Delta. They do not have cartridges in them as such but have a few parts that will need to be changed. Most often all that has to be replaced is the springs and washers.
      Thanks for commenting and get back to me when you can. Al

      TheOldkid888 yeah it just pulls out, then turns left and right for hot or cold. So far everything looks identical to the cartridge in my faucet, before being removed. Thanks for the response and the informative video.

      Hello Christopher;
      It sounds like Moen to me as well.
      Hope the repair goes well for you!

      It helped me out because I thought the clip was the one under faucet housing so I wasted time and energy taking the sprayer off. I watched the video and saw the clip up top where I didn't have to take housing off, smh. Thank you.

    when that faucet barely starts to drip drip (likely from the hot water side)... get the replacement cartridge ! I found the cold water shutoff valve was not working at all to shut off water... so that valve had to be replaced with house supply turned 'off' before a new faucet cartridge could be installed... that part you can do alone and do NOT wait a long time as it drips constantly.... fix it NOW.

      Hello Doug,
      Great advice!
      A leaking faucet can cause you a bit of money over a very short period of time especially if it is hot. If repaired soon after discovering it; it immediately becomes money in your pocket!
      Thanks for the input and enjoy your week! Al

      Hello STARSHIP OLYMPUS,
      First time I had heard about that. If it loosens cartridges I would be a little hesitant to use it on my head. LOL
      I am glad it worked for you!
      I may just give that a try sometime.

      I kept struggling to pull out the old cartridge. I ended up using a small vise, gave a good hard pull on the handle, and viola! (Pardon my French.) Thanks for the informative videos.
