I’m the guy that stood on my counter with a vice grip attached to the stem 😅. I texted my plumber and asked if this was normal. He said to use the white plastic insert or a pliers to turn the cartridge. Thanks for the pro tip.
Hello corybinsfield2974, I have talked to a lot of people who have done the same thing. I started using the plastic tool a few decades back. Moen didn't mention anything in the instructions as I think everyone thought it was just covering the end of the cartridge for shipping. Makes all the difference in the world spinning the cartridge back and forth. I know a lot of plumbers who never knew that is what it was for as well. You're not alone. LOL! Be a good video though! Congrats on the repair! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Terrific, thanks. That tip about twisting it back and forth to break the friction between those rubber pads and the brass cylinder was a great share of your experience and did the trick for me.
Hello NMranchhand, You're welcome! Twisting the cartridge is the secret to making it come out much easier. I have heard of stories where people have got on top of their countertop and tried to pull it out without twisting it back and forth beforehand. Makes all the difference in the world. I am glad it worked out for you! Congrats on the repair! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
I followed your advice about being gentle and patient when using the plastic tool to remove the cartridge. It took a little time but it worked well. Thank you!
Hello Robert, You're welcome! Congrats! The plastic tool works well if you are patient. From time to time; it gets a little tougher, but there are other ways of removing the stem if that does happen. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Many thanks for this video. A HUGE help. The cartridge was an absolute breeze to replace and who ever says THAT when it comes to plumbing. My local Home Hardware had a cartridge and I didn't have to pay anything because of Moen's lifetime guarantee...just had to take the old one back. It was 30 years old....the age of our house. Kudos to Moen. I wouldn't buy anything else now.
Hello z2bombers1, I am glad everything worked out for you! Congrats on the repair! I am a lifer with Moen. Excellent product as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for commenting and enjoy the holidays! Al
How does the return work. You have to have the old one on hand when you buy the new one? Or can you come back later with the old one and get your money back?
@@ZupE891 Take a picture of your Moen faucet and send that to Moen. You do not have to take out the old cartridge. Not sure if a hardware store will accept that, but you can try. Moen will give you a new cartridge, but not sure if they'll give your money back if you purchase one.
I just want to thank yo for your video. I viewed another video that said "little white plastic" thing that comes with the cartridge is "completely useless". Your video clearly explained the usefulness of this tool. Literally, I was standing on the counter trying to pull it out. I thought I would have to go the route of a plumber. Your video explained that because the rubber binds with the metal, you use the white plastic tool to gently wiggle it left to right. Anyway, it worked! So, thank you for your video,
Hello Joe, Lisa & Gabriel Levine; You are more then welcome! The little tool they give with the cartridge works on almost all cartridge replacements. I am glad you got along well with the repair! Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
Thanks so much for posting this! Especially the tip about the cartridge loosening tool. The enclosed instructions didn't mention this at all. Saved me a ton of time and frustration.
Hello mojochopper; You are more then welcome! I always say that the plastic tool is worth its weight in gold. It sure saves a lot of frustration. Glad your repair went well! Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
Thanks for the tips! Especially on the usefulness of the white plastic tool to remove the cartridge. Moen themselves had a video where the cartridge was plucked out as if a gentle little flower. No mention of the tool nor its usefulness. Nearly threw out my back trying to do it the hard way. Thanks again!
Hello Damir; You are more then welcome! That little piece of plastic is worth its weight in gold as far as I am concerned. Funny Moen didn't mention the tool. I know I find it very handy. Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
My hubby and I are so grateful to you for taking the time to upload this video ; ) We watched another helpful video, but our shower faucet was older (25+ years). You helped us identify the correct part, change the parts out, and save a couple hundred dollars in plumber fees. What a great feeling - we did it ourselves! Yaay! Thanks again.
This video filled in the gaps from another video I watched and made me aware of the little white tool which allowed me to finally extract the cartridge. I also got lucky when I put the new cartridge in and got it right the first time.
Hello NJ Hog, Great to hear! That little plastic tool comes in handy for sure. It also can be used to align the cartridge when placing it back in the faucet body! Glad everything worked out for you! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Brilliant! I watched and rewatched the official moen video and was stuck at getting the valve out, they didnt bother to show the trick with the white cap. Used the cap as described and it came right off!
Hello Michael! Thanks! Congrats on the repair! I figured there had to be a reason for the cap. I have never found any information on it, but I decided to give it a try and it worked very well. I believe the company puts it in the bag to allow the installer to make slight turns to the cartridge allowing the retaining clip to go in easier and push it into the faucet body. But turning the cartridge back and forth with the plastic tool allows it to come out much easier. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Thanks for the tip about the little plastic tool. I have always wondered what it is for, and this was the first time I have needed it. I had watched another video recommending taps and dies, valve pullers, etc--and all I needed was the little plastic tool to loosen the cartridge. Many, many thanks.
Hello Rich; You are more then welcome! Not a lot of people know what the plastic tool is for and that includes plumbers as well. There are times when the water is exceptionally hard and the plastic tool will not turn the cartridge before you pull it out, but I made another video explaining what to do if you come across that situation. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the project! Al
Thank you. After 6 months of procrastinating, I found this video and got a free :-) replacement cartridge at Home Depot, spent a whopping 10 minutes and whadda-ya-know; no more drips! If only everything was so easy.
Your instructions worked like a charm and I was able to get the cartridge for free at Home Hardware in Canada without any proof of purchase or the old cartridge! Thank you for posting this.
Ralph Pritchard You are more then welcome! I am glad you were able to get the cartridge free of charge! Good feeling for sure! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Hello Chad Woehnker, I am glad everything went well for you! $53 seems a little pricey. If you have the old one take it and go back to the store and ask them for a replacement for free. They should do it for you or go to another hardware store. Many of them will replace it for no charge. Was it a Moen posi-temp cartridge? Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! Al
Hello tekman55, You're welcome! It's quite easy to do. Sure beats pulling the cartridge again! Thanks for commenting and I hope 2022 treats you well! Al
This was incredibly helpful! Thank you so much! There's no way I could have pulled hard enough without using the white tool. With that little tool it was easy and took no time at all :)
Hello Adam Fraser-Kruck, You're welcome! I am glad everything worked out for you! Congrats on the repair! Turning the cartridge is the secret for sure! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
My second cartridge is a bit more complicated. The set screw for the handle is rusted and I have not been able to remove it. The screw is slotted. I will try to cut the handle off and see if I can make the slot deeper with a dremmel tool. I don't want to drill it out on fears that I'll damage the theads that I'll need to pull out the cartridge. My easy out on small screws hasn't worked well in the past. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks again! J.B.
Hello Jb Bennett; I would try cutting the handle as you mentioned. I wouldn't worry about the threads as they are on the old cartridge and have nothing to do with the removal of the cartridge. Getting the handle off can be the toughest part of the job sometimes. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the repair! Al
Thank you very much for this short identification of parts video. I am not the plumber but I was unsure of which one before even pulling. Laymen here and this one I have is def the 1222.. God bless
Hello Tom B, You're welcome! I am glad the video was able to help! 1222 is for Moen tub and shower or shower valve. 1225 for kitchen and basin faucets. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
You have saved me no end of groaning and cussing. Once I saw that plastic I thought, "I have one of those". Sure enough it worked like a charn an in couple minutes the job was done. I thank you and so does my wife.
Hello William; I am glad it worked out for you and congrats on the repair! That plastic tool is worth its weight in gold for sure! Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
Great info!! Thank you so much cuz I couldn't decide which one to order for my tub/shower faucet. And since the handle pulls out I ordered the 1225. No one else explained that! Gracias!
Hello Carol Nicola, You're welcome! I am glad everything worked out for you! Hopefully the repair goes well! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! Al
Just want to thank you very much for explaining they used to put the 1225b in years ago because we were puzzled. Did not remember a few years ago husband replaced a 1225b with 1222b part moen sent us. We saved the old part and thought it was what we needed, however it "was" 1222b that was needed. Thanks!!!
Hello T Simons, You're welcome! Nice to know what to look for before making the repair! Moen is quite simple as far as their cartridges go. I am a big fan! Thanks for commenting and have a great one! Al
Thanks for showing me which cartridge I needed! Moen's website didn't specify which one, I ended up buying the wrong cartridge, and now I know which one to correctly get!
Hello Lisa; The 1225B is the pull out and turn. It is for kitchen, basin and the older style moen bath faucets. The 1222B is the newer style cartridge for the posi-temp bath faucets. moen does replace them under there warranty if you call the company; they will send one to you in the mail at no charge. Excellent company! Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
Great video! I had a very hard time getting my 1225 cartridge out. I yanked on the top with pliers but it would not budge. I wanted to be sure I could get it out first before purchasing a replacement so I did not have the little plastic tool that comes with the replacement and not sure it would have worked any way. I observed on the side of the stem of the cartridge, near the top, is a small hole on the side and using the biggest allen key I had that would fit the hole placed it in it. Under the allen key I placed my pliers under it, sideways, to give me something for leverage. I then pushed down on the allen key and to my surprise it popped up relatively easy. I had to work it some to get it all the way out. I bought a replacement at Lowes for $20 and replaced it and it works great. A little unorthodox method, I know, but it worked. Just be careful not to damage any other parts, especially the tabs of the old one in case it does not work for you. Though the new one comes already greased I added a little more.
@@stephenlam4529 I read on the Moen site that they will only replace your cartridge if you are the original owner. We are the second owner of our house so I just bought a replacement on Ebay quite cheaply got a two pack for around $20.
Your comment about the Allen wrench helped me get my tub diverter out... did it a little differently because lack of space, but your Allen wrench idea got the ball rolling! Thanks! 7 year old comment for the win!
Hello larryps, You're welcome! Hopefully it helps with your repair! If you have any further questions feel free to ask! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Hello Jordan, You're more than welcome! Makes all the difference in the world when it comes to removing the cartridge. A little turn back and forth before pulling it out saves a lot of struggle. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Except they make the part that actually connects the handle to the cartridge out of cheap plastic that breaks once the cartridge becomes a little sticky. All that metal let down by a 2 cent plastic part.
Thanks for the little tool info! I have the 1225 and replaced it before covid but it has leaked (hot side) ever since so we keep the hot water off until we use the faucet. I have another cartridge and this week I am going to pull it again and replace it hoping the "barrel" is not scratched and I can solve my problem.
It helps to know that Moen's faucet handles require a 7/64 allen(hex) wrench, a size NOT included in many sets. Less than a dollar. Buy one before you drive yourself nuts.
Hello Candace Hackett Shively, So very true! LOL! No need of of doing that for the sake of a buck. Thanks for commenting and I appreciate your input! Al
Candace Hackett Shively it's TOO LATE! they told me on the phone it'd just come right off...obviously I was talking handles, she was talking cartridge. Thanks soooooooo much! You should make a video that says that one thing whilst showing the tool. whatta time-saver.
Great tip, Candace. A word of caution, though - not all Moen faucets use the same size, even if the faucets look identical. I have two Moen Monticello single handle bath/shower faucets purchased about 10 years apart. They are the exact same model. They appear identical on the outside and they both use the 1225 cartridge, but there are quite a few internal differences. Regarding the handle set screw, the newer one, installed c. 2009, uses the 7/64 hex as you say. The older one installed c. 2000 uses a 3/32 hex set screw. The older faucet was really getting hard to operate, so I decided to give it a tune-up. I had no problem finding the right size hex wrench and removing the handle. Of course only after I changed the cartridge on the older one did I notice that the newer faucet had already lost a lot of the easy operation (silky feel) that the rejuvenated older faucet has. But initially I was stumped at how to remove the handle of the newer faucet. I went through all my standard and metric hex wrenches and it turned out I had nothing that fit. As you suggest, I was close to the point of going nuts, especially since I knew what size I used on the other "identical" faucet. I had to make a trip to the hardware store to buy another set that included the 7/64 hex wrench, and that was the ticket on the newer faucet. Another difference is the metal sleeve that covers the brass cartridge housing. On the newer faucet, you can slide it right out without removing the escutcheon (as shown in the pictorial Moen directions that come with the replacement cartridge). On the older faucet, that piece has two flared-out tabs that prevent removal of the sleeve without first removing he escutcheon. I should have ground them off before re-assembly. I see no purpose for them other than to make disassembly more difficult. Another tip I'll share. It was not possible to remove either cartridge initially, nor even to turn it with the provided tool. The cartridges were stuck so tightly that the plastic tool would walk right out of the engagement without budging the cartridge. I saw another video in which a person used a needle nose pliers to initially budge the cartridge a little bit, but even that trick would not move it. So I began spraying white vinegar and allowing it to soak in and do its thing on the mineral deposits. I kept spraying every couple hours. After a day or so of waiting in each case, I tried again and was able to begin turning and then eventually remove the cartridges. Maybe I should just resign to re-lubricating or replacing them on a maintenance basis every few years. I recall replacing cartridges on other Moen faucets in my house (the kitchen faucet plus the one that was originally in the master bath), but I never had this degree of trouble removing an old cartridge. Looks like it's time to replace my water softener! One other thing. Both of my bathroom faucets include the built-in stop valves. I think the versions that include the stop valves cost about $10-20 extra when I bought them. It sounded like a good idea. But when it came time to use them, I was barely able to get them to turn on the 2009 vintage faucet. They would not budge on the 2000 faucet. It's a nice idea if they would work. I probably ruined them because of a faulty water softener.
After watching your video and installing my 1225 cartridge, I honestly think the tool is more for aligning the two plastic tabs vertically rather than use as a removal tool. It is a bugger to install the clip if the body is inserted off just a little bit and the tool can help rotate it in place. Hope this is helpful to someone.
I just took out one that was never used and tried to put it back in. It would not go in far enough to get the pin back on. Is the trick to keep wiggling it?
@TheOldkid888 Thank You & greetings from sunny Orlando Florida! You were dead on! Here in Central Florida, hard water is a real problem. I unscrewed the aerator & white granular lime deposits were everywhere. Cleaned & re installed it. You saved me the cost of a cartridge! Took 5 minutes to fix. I Thank You Again" Kevin
Hello nogovannut9386, You're welcome! I am a big Moen fan myself. Great product! Hopefully it helps with any future projects! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Thank you, your video helped me replace my first shower cartridge!! I learned about the difference between the 1222 and the 1225. I also would not have known about making sure the hot water had to be turned a certain way.
video over 3 years ago, but still a goodie. it helped clarify whether i needed the puller, since posts on other sites tried to scare people into buying it. the only mistake i made was forcing the cartridge in and breaking the o-ring, but the second one i bought went in well. no leaks.
Hello Michael; Thanks for the kind words! Congrats on the repair! You have to be a little careful when installing the cartridge as the o-rings can get nipped. I personally don't own a puller. The plastic tool works on most of them. Once they begin to turn; you can usually remove them with a set of channels or pliers. If you call Moen; they will mail you a free cartridge at no charge directly and mail it to your home. Just tell them what type it is and when it was installed. They are an excellent company and have a great warranty. Thanks for commenting and have a great week! Al
I didn’t find this video until after I replaced the cartridge. First I had no idea that it was a Moen, since there are no markings anywhere on the outside. Then it took 1/2 hour of prying, pulling, and yanking to remove the old cartridge. I took it to Home Depot and they were no help identifying it. The old cartridge had a number 12801 stamped on it. I found that same number stamped on the 1225 cartridge. The new cartridge included the plastic tool that I needed to remove the old one. This job was a big PITA!
Hello Barack Blows, The cartridge can be difficult to remove for sure. I have heard of people standing on top of their countertop trying to pull the cartridge out. Turing it back and forth makes all the difference in the world when it comes to removing it. I am glad to hear you got the repair done. Congrats! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
I replaced my shower because it was leaking when it was apparently off.. When I pulled it it was the one on the right the one with the clear view.. It is still leaking after replacing it.. Why is it still leaking if I put it exactly the way the other one was.. Please advice how I can fix the leak with the new replacement cartridge.. Thank You and that is a awesome explanation of the tools to use..
I have another handle just above that controls the water flow on and off as well as between 2 showerheads. When I replaced the cartridge on the lower handle the water now also turns off when turned fully towards cold, whereas before it only turned to control water temperature.
I used the little white tool and it was useless. My 16-17 year old Moen 1222 cartridge did not want to come out of the housing. I had to buy the Moen positemp cartridge puller from Home Depot and even then it was a chore. Put it back in with silicone plumbing lube. Hopefully won't need to replace it again.
Hello Lalo Lalo, You would be looking for a 1225 cartridge for that style Moen. It pulls out and turns left for hot and right for cold. In the event you install the cartridge and the hot is on the right it is just a matter of turning the center part of the stem 180 degrees. You do have to pull the entire cartridge out. (turn center stem 180 degrees) Be sure to twist the entire cartridge back forth before trying to pull it out and check inside the faucet body for any pieces of rubber that may have been left behind with a flashlight once removed. Hope the repair goes well for you! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! Al
@@TheOldkid888 Thank you so much. Your vid details the steps so well, I know I can do it, the only thing i had a problem was that little clip (for like) that holds it, looks stucked, very hard to pull, looking for solutions, so far someone recommended pouring some coca cola liquid to rid of the rust, but not so sure. Any tips? sorry too many questions :).
@@lalolalo1233 I would suggest giving it a few gentle taps with a screwdriver and .hammer (Gentle) on the end. This will break any bond that may be holding the clip in. A little to the left and then the right. A pair of pliers or vice grips will work to pull it out. They generally aren't stuck in there to hard Let me know how you get along....Al
Just recently bought and replaced my Moen cartridge and I bought that "T" looking stem wrench tool to pull it out. I threw that plastic away because I thought it was just for the packaging... *face palm* But any way, my faucet is leaking again, so I'm about to take it all off and try to install it all again to see if maybe I did something wrong. :-/ Great videos!
+lovelylouro You installed a 1225 cartridge. Sorry about the plastic tool situation. The face palm was a funny comment. Probably not to you, but I can picture it happening. The instructions don't have the plastic any where with the new cartridge. Figured that one out myself many moons ago. You may have got a bad cartridge. Very rare, but it does happen. Give the company a call; 1-800 number, explain your situation and they should send you one in the mail free of charge. Excellent to deal with. Thanks for commenting and let me know how you get along....Al
Thank you for responding. Seems I hadn't tightened up the actual handle (plastic-crystal knob) on right and it was causing all sorts of trouble. Luckily, since it was just the handle, after I put everything back together, problem solved. Feel pretty dumb, but I had never attempted something like installing a cartridge before. Live and learn. Have a good one.
lovelylouro You are more than welcome! Nice to get it repaired regardless of how much fine tuning you had to do. Congrats on that! Day not learned is a day wasted. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
I don't really know if Moen is best or not. But for sure they have the best customer service. Amazing, really. As the parts fail on my old Moen faucets they just keep sending me replacement parts, and they pay for everything. I just have to call and explain my problem. That will keep me buying Moen forever I guess.
Guam Vet Agree ! At least Moen realized there is a problem with the 1225B. Lifetime warranty is offer. Shouldn't they replace it with a improved cartridge to solve the issue ?!?
i just replaced mine last night on my shower. I did all this and it was still unbelievably hard to pull out. My concern was of pulling the wall down ( that was how hard I was pulling) . Not very happy with the water pressure. Is there a replacement cartridge for this 1222b from someone other than Moen that will give a person more water pressure? I know you say how great this faucet is but with the low pressure and how hard it was to replace I will never buy another one.
We've just replaced a Moen 1225B cartridge in our stand up shower successfully. We thought by doing so it would fix the problem of only getting hot water out of the shower head. But........the problem still exists. The shower does not produce cold water. This is a secondary shower only used when the grand kids or guests come to visit. Can you suggest a home repair before we have to call in a plumber. Thanks so much!
Hello Arsenio, You are more than welcome! Pulls out...1225 cartridge Only turns...1222 cartridge Thanks for the kind words and best of luck with the repair! Al
Hello lionden4, They do carry a lifetime warranty. That is correct. Quite often the hardware store will give you a cartridge if you ask about it being free from the company, Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
lionden4 Shut the water off, remove the cartridge bring it to Home Depot plumbing Ariel. People in charge there should give you a replacement free of charge because of Moen cartridge are lifetime warranty. I myself just got a second one. NOT sure other retailer honor this offer ?
I just sent them an e mail and they sent me new cartridges for every faucet in my house. I never kept the receipts when I replaced the old faucets over the years.
Replaced 1225 but when I open the tap it doesn't stay open. It gradually closes. How can I make the tap stay open. Kitchen is on 4th floor of a condo. Is low water pressure and issue that would cause this or should it stay on regardless?
Great video tip, Thanks, I have so far replaced may be 10 cartridges in my 1 shower faucet. Its a rented place & every few months i hear that the water is not stopping when shut, Do you think when this faucet is used for a extended periods of time at hot temps that it will harden the O ring to cause it to malfunction.? More importantly have another question, When i remove the Outer elongated chrome handle you will see a black plastic casing thats held by a screw. I applied some (blue)thread locker as it was coming loose often, Now that screw keeps turning when i tried to get it out but unable to remove it completely to remove the black plastic (to remove the cartridge). DO you have any thoughts.?
Hello yamahalowrider, Water quality has a lot to do with how long a faucet or cartridge will last. I have seen some last for decades and others only a few years. The hot water should not effect the cartridge unless it is exceptionally hot or the hot water is run for a long time before getting a shower and then adjusting the temp. Since you have replaced it that many times you should be getting them at no cost. Tell whom ever you get it from and they should hook you up free of charge. They do in my neck of the woods. The black plastic you are talking about should not be there. It is used for roughing in when installing the faucet. You leave it in place and bring gyproc and then tile to it. It is only a gauge of how far the faucet should be protruding out on a finished wall so that the handle will fit properly. The black face should be flush with the finished wall to allow the indentation of the chrome flange to sit into the opening. It should be removed when installing the sleeve, flange and handle. I am presuming it is about the same size as the hole through the wall. If so, it should have been taken out years ago when the faucet was installed. I would suggest trying to break the screw off or the plastic around the screw itself. Before you do anything reply to my comment and let me know if the black plastic is about the same size as the hole itself...... Thanks for commenting and get back to me when you get a chance....Al
They use to guarantee the cartridge for life. They then changed it to the original homeowner, they then changed it again, I believe they are now guaranteed for 5 years.
Hello Norm475, I believe you are correct. I now take them to the hardware stores which generally go good for them. If you let them you installed it in the past few years they should replace one for you free of charge. Thanks for the input and enjoy your week! Al
Hello Ishkatan, Going from a regular moen bath shower faucet is quite simple. the size of the hole is fine. I will make a video of this in the not too distant future as to the procedure. I have made a video on installing the a posi-temp in a fiberglass shower that may help you out. This is it.... Shower install...Part 3.How to solder a single lever bath faucet.Plumbing tips! You will find a few tips in this video that will help with your installation. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Hello Nancy, Wish I could help you out more as well! If I was a neighbor; I would be right over! Hopefully the project will go well for you! Thanks for commenting and have a great week! Al
Hello 1buckdharma; If it is a Moen cartridge then it should be a 1225B cartridge. They were the older style. The 1222B is about twice the size in diameter and is for the new bath and shower faucet. You may have to take the cartridge apart and apply a little plumber's lube to the O-rings. This should make it a lot easier to pull out and turn. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the repair! Al
Hello juanjceballos5536, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I don't have a video on that. The biggest thing when it comes to removing the cartridge is to turn the entire cartridge before trying to remove it. Even to the point of making a complete circle. I generally twist it back and forth a number of times to break the seal that usually forms between the rubber on the cartridge and faucet housing. It can be bonded pretty good at times as you know. Even though the center has pulled out you can still try and turn the outer part of the cartridge as much as possible. If you turn it 90 degrees you can get a hold of a tab with the channel locks or vise grips. Best of luck with the repair! Hopefully everything works out for you! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Hello Alice; Thanks for the kind words! You are more then welcome! I would remove the aerator ( screen ) off the spout of the faucets and check it for dirt. I would say that it is partially plugged. Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
Worked like a charm! I felt so empowered I replaced the faucet in the "kids" claw foot bath tub! Only one small thing - now when I turn off the water or flush the toilet in bathroom where I changed out the cartridge, the pipes bang.
Hello Alice; The faucet is turning off so fast that it is causing water hammer. The pipes may not be secured firm to the joists down below the floor. Is this on the second floor or first and can you see them down below? Thanks for commenting and get back to me when you get a chance! Al
if the pressure in the sink suddenly drops after shutting your water off, you probably have debris in the aerator. simply removing aerator and cleaning it out should fix the problem, or replacing it if it has corrosion on it.
Hello chris; Low pressure coming out of the faucet is usually that exact problem. Plugged aerator is very common. Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
What do you suggest if the stupid supplied white "tool" does nothing but tear to shreds the plastic that it is supposed to latch onto? Now how to I get the cartridge loose (preferably without having to spend $20 for a removal tool I'll never need again).
Hello Mark, I made a video just for a situation like this... Removing a moen cartridge from the faucet! If the plastic tool should fail you! Plumbing tips! This video should help you. Thanks for commenting and good luck with the repair! Al
Thanks but I had seen that video and it doesn't help. You may have missed the part where I said the plastic was torn by the tool. In that video you are using the plastic (the same plastic that the tool latches onto) to turn the cartridge. The plastic is gone in my case. At this point there isn't even any longer the metal knob (that you usually grab onto with pliers to pull out the cartridge after you have loosened it). That broke off when I tried to pull the cartridge out with pliers. I'm replacing the faucet. Now I have a brand new $13 cartridge that is of no use to me. I won't be buying any more single-handle faucets.
Hello Michael; I am planning on making a video tomorrow on another procedure. The little tool generally works, but a pair of needle nose pliers will work on stubborn cartridges. Open and place the pliers onto the cartridge and take a screwdriver, place it in between the open pliers and give it a turn. Should definitely work for you! Let me know how you get along and stay tuned tomorrow for the demo! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your evening! Al
Hey thanks so much for posting this helpful video. Just curious many suggest using a PULLER made for, or by Moen. It seems to me there would be less chance to mess anything up using a puller like a Danco - which gives you more leverage vs yanking with a pliers?. Danco makes one about $11 or, would that just be a waste of money..now knowing that plastic piece may be all one needs? My cartridge MIGHT be in there 20 years..have hard water here, I'm assuming mine may need a bit of force to get out, I haven't tried it yet...no puller needed? Thank you...
Hello Xiong Li, You're welcome! A puller will definitely help! And the cheap one that is sold at HD works well! The biggest thing to keep in mind when removing the cartridge is to twist it back and forth before pulling it out. Even with the puller you can pull the center stem of it out and leave the remainder of it in the faucet body so twisting it back and forth is a must. I have heard of people actually standing on their countertop trying to remove the cartridge who didn't give it a twist before hand. I also made a video using two screwdrivers to twist the cartridge if the little plastic tool that comes with the new cartridge doesn't work for you! As long as you twist it back and forth no puller is really required. Be sure to check inside the faucet once you removed the old cartridge and make sure there is nothing left behind that will cause problems when installing the new one. As you can tell I mentioned the twisting motion often. Most important!!! Hopefully the repair goes well for you! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Al, thank you so much! Your directions worked perfectly and were super helpful. Guess I got lucky I did use the Moen little plastic thing to twist.. I was able to twist the cartridge right/left/left/right...Just as you showed, and to my surprise though I bought a Danco (Moen ) puller...I was able to get the cartridge out then easily with just some good pliers. I was then able to return my unused puller to H Depot saving me about $17. Really appreciate your clear help here...faucet now is perfect...Only thing I noticed is the feel is MUCH lighter to move the handle than the old one. I assume maybe that's the way it's supposed to work?..in any case all is working perfectly, no more leaks drips :). Thanks again...Shaun
Hello DAKaasa; It doesn't matter,,,girl or boy when it comes to the trade. Girls are just as capable as boys. Big thing to check for with the posi is to make sure the H and C are at the top and you are all set. I hope you get along well with the repair. When you get a chance; leave a message on your repair. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! G. L. Al
One question. First, very good to the point video. You had written on the surface that the valves were laying on the valve part numbers and below tha the letter “B”. What does the letter B stand for? Does the letter go with the numbers or what?
Hello JoeRetired, I have always included the letter whenever I was looking for a cartridge. The letter "B" I was told means bagged. Not sure if this is correct or not, but you only need the numbers to get the correct cartridge. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Quick question; what if my moen cartridge is neither of these? It’s most like the 1222, but has wings at the outside end- still retained by a clip. The outer portion refuses to be rotated. Any ideas?
@@TheOldkid888 Thank you for the video. It helped me decide to tackle the leaky faucet cartridge. Even though I was not able to break mine free via twisting, I was able to run a drill bit through each tab top and bottom and then pull out the pieces. These videos provide some insight into what you’re looking at.
Hello DAKaasa; Sorry to hear about the handle. Three days without a shower is not pleasant for sure, but I am happy you got it repaired. Nice to hear everything is back in order. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! Al
Did this for the first time in my life. My problem was valve not shutting off or regulating temp properly. Changed twice until I found the problem to be a small pebble stuck in the hole. This pebble ran back down the cold pipe the first two times when depressurizing and draining lines and re-entered the unit upon re-pressurization. The third time I did not drain house of water after depressurizing and pebble had stuck in the hole and came out with the unit. So if all else fails for you perhaps give a split second of pressure on your system when the unit is out to clear debris. Stay dry :)
Hello bike105bike; That is usually the problem that occurs when you install a new cartridge and still have problems with the faucet. A small piece of debris can play havoc on a faucet. Thanks very much for commenting and have a great week! Al
I have used a wooden laundry pin (for hanging laundry on a clothes line) as a substitute for plastic tool. I had no idea what brand of faucet I had , so needed to remove it before I could purchase a replacement.
Hello Linda, That what is called thinking outside the box! Congrats on that! Hopefully the repair went well for you! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
I can't get the handle to stay up after reinstalling the cartridge. As soon as I turn the water on, the handle drops back down and turns it off. I tried wiping the grease off the interior of the cartridge, and it still does it. I have taken the faucet apart (about ten times) and tried every thing I can think of to fix it. Can you help?
"We" just had to replace the plastic handle! However, the first handle broke inside, trying to put it on, and on second try, (which we agonized and pondered over for quite awhile) my boyfriend just rotated the thing clockwise, once, then the handle fit on nicely. I think the 2 handles were 8 bucks each, but beats the 40 dollar fix! 3 days without a shower, sucked! Thanks for the helpful video, *Oldkid :o)
Hi, thanks for the great video to help me confirm that I bought the wrong cartridge. The posi temp is too wide and the plastic tool won't fit over the cartrige in the faucet.
Hello bethperrotta, You're welcome! Unfortunately they don't fit. The posi-temp cartridge (1222) is only for the more recent bath/shower faucet. The 1225 will fit all single lever sink faucets. Thanks for commenting and hopefully the repair goes well for you! Al
Nice short video, right to the point. Thanks very helpful. I got the replacement cartridge at Home Depot for free simply by asking. Didn't even have the old cartridge with me.
Hello Randy, you are more than welcome! Nice to get the cartridge for free. Most hardware and big box stores do that. Thanks for commenting and good luck with the repair! Al
@mikeplantamura Hello Mike; If you have to pull the handle out to allow the water to flow and then turn it to the right for cold and left for hot; you will need the 1225B cartridge. The bigger of the 2 cartridges does not pull out and is the 1222B cartridge. Best of luck and thanks for your comments!! Al
That piece of info right there is worth it's weight in gold since Moen can't be bothered to effing identify anything or label it, and their customer service is worse than the DMV. If it actually were guaranteed for life, I wouldn't be replacing it now, would I? I called Moen and they had the balls to tell me their product shouldn't be used in a hard water environment with lots of build up. I didn't put it in, I'm just the jackass trying to fix it.
Hello baldasareaw; You are more then welcome! Glad it worked out for you and congrats on the repair! The little plastic tool works 99% of the time! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your day! Al
Is there a way to attach a photo of a kitchen faucet with the handle removed - to see if by looking at the top of the cartridge you might know what type it is - so I can try and figure out how to remove it. It is a single handle and it no longer shuts off the water supply.
Hello maureenpeniuk863, There are so many single lever faucet manufacturers now that it is hard to keep track of. It should say on the faucet somewhere what type it is. Sometimes they etch the name in inconspicuous places. Have a close look around and even on the back of the faucet. We can try. oldkid888@hotmail.com. Thanks for commenting and enjoy the holidays! Al
Hello Cheryl, I am not really certain why that would happen. Are you on a well by chance or is it municipal water? Very fine sediment in the water would do it every time. Thanks for commenting and get back to me when you get a chance...Al
Hello NEDERLAM, You've been lucky. All depends on water quality. Some can be a fight until the end while other slide out as if they were just installed. Thanks for commenting and enjoy week! Al
Hi I've got a moen two handle roman tub faucet- the hot water doesn't get that hot. I've tried turning up water heater but that doesn't help. Every other faucet in the house gets nice and hot except for this one. Would this be a cartridge issue or is there a way I can adjust so the water gets hotter? Thanks in advance!
Hello beckstead41, Definitely not a cartridge issue. Not sure exactly what is taking place with your situation. If you are running hot water alone; it should be close to the same temperature as the other faucets in the house. Is the water in the basin where the tub is located hotter than the tub? get back to me when you get a chance.....Al
I replaced the 1222 with no problem. A couple days later I get a rumbling noise after turning on the faucet about a quarter turn. Rotate to center and all the way over to hot it stops. Why is it doing this?
Hello Scott, Not exactly sure what is happening there. Never had any issue like this before have you? When you changed the faucet was it secure in back? As in not moving once you put the flange back on. Thinking it could be the piping loose possibly making the noise. You have good pressure on both the cold and hot? Get back to me when you get a chance....Al
hi moen also includes a little silicone grease packet. do you know if it is safe for contact with drinking water, or if it gets in the water?. we used it liberally on the cartridge before inserting it. thanks for the video!
Hello Gina; I would have no problem drinking the water after installing the new cartridge as the grease is very good to adhering to the cartridge and the faucet body. As far as it being 100% safe I cant say that, but personally I would drink for the faucet and have no worries. They use it on all their faucets that re used world wide. All manufacturers of faucets use some type of grease on their faucets. Thanks for commenting and congrats on making the repair! Al
Hello Fireinahorn, That is correct. The 1225 is the cartridge that you pull out to turn on the water. Not sure if you see it in the video, but the 1222 is wider and you turn it to allow the water to flow. The 1222 is used for the newer model bath and shower faucets only. It is for the posi-temp faucet where the water temperature stays the same if someone turns on another faucet. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
Hello sandymilne224, I can't say that I am familiar with the Kalia 101559 shower diverter. Not a faucet that is sold in this part of the country. Sorry! If all else fails you can give their 1-800 number a call and perhaps they can help you out over the phone. Thanks for commenting and ebest of luck with the repair! Al
My shower handle needs to turn further to the left than normal now to get more hot water. I have super hot water everywhere else in the house so I ruled out the hot water heater.does this seem like I need a new cartridge? My home built in 2001, what model cartridge might I have do you think? Thanks for the help. Great video!
Hello tieweb; You are more then welcome and thanks for the kind words! If you have to pull it out to turn it on and then left to right for hot or cold; you need a 1225B cartridge. If you turn the water to the left to turn it on then you are looking at a 1222B cartridge. Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
My cartridge is stuck pretty bad and I lost the locking pin down in the wall. Will it hold without the locking pin for a while? Or should I try and buy a replacement for the time being?
Hello Jennifer, You need the retaining clip. It will NOT hold without it. You MUST purchase a new retaining clip in order to hold the cartridge in place and turn the water on. DO NOT try and turn the water on without it. Any hardware store should have the horseshoe shaped clip. Thanks for commenting and hopefully all works out for you! Al
@@TheOldkid888 thanks for getting back with me! I bought a replacement clip and put it in. I'm pretty frustrated I can't get the old cartridge out... guess it's time to call a plumber haha
Hello Jennifer, I made a video that may help with the removal of the cartridge. Removing a moen cartridge from the faucet! If the plastic tool should fail you! Plumbing tips! You must remember that you have to turn the cartridge back and forth before you try to remove it or it probably won't come out for you. The video should definitely help you with the repair. Remember to check inside the faucet body for any pieces of the old cartridge before you install the new one. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the repair! Al Let me know how you get along when you get a chance,
Hello Tom Krzemecki, The 1225 pulls out to turn the water on. The 1222 only turns to allow the water to flow. The 1222 is only found on tub/shower faucets. All other single lever Moen faucets have the 125 cartridge. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! Al
I’m the guy that stood on my counter with a vice grip attached to the stem 😅. I texted my plumber and asked if this was normal. He said to use the white plastic insert or a pliers to turn the cartridge. Thanks for the pro tip.
Hello corybinsfield2974,
I have talked to a lot of people who have done the same thing.

Ten years after posting this video it is still a very helpful piece of information! Thanks for the great information.
Hello jackC,
You're welcome!

Terrific, thanks. That tip about twisting it back and forth to break the friction between those rubber pads and the brass cylinder was a great share of your experience and did the trick for me.
Hello NMranchhand,
You're welcome!
Twisting the cartridge is the secret to making it come out much easier. I have heard of stories where people have got on top of their countertop and tried to pull it out without twisting it back and forth beforehand. Makes all the difference in the world.
I am glad it worked out for you!
Congrats on the repair!

I followed your advice about being gentle and patient when using the plastic tool to remove the cartridge. It took a little time but it worked well. Thank you!
Hello Robert,
You're welcome!
Congrats! The plastic tool works well if you are patient.
From time to time; it gets a little tougher, but there are other ways of removing the stem if that does happen.

Hello z2bombers1,
I am glad everything worked out for you!
Congrats on the repair!
I am a lifer with Moen. Excellent product as far as I'm concerned.

So, thank you for your video,
Hello Joe, Lisa & Gabriel Levine;

The little tool they give with the cartridge works on almost all cartridge replacements.

Thanks so much for posting this! Especially the tip about the cartridge loosening tool. The enclosed instructions didn't mention this at all. Saved me a ton of time and frustration.

Hello Damir;

Hello NJ Hog,

Hello Rich;
You are more then welcome!
Al

$53 seems a little pricey. If you have the old one take it and go back to the store and ask them for a replacement for free. They should do it for you or go to another hardware store. Many of them will replace it for no charge.
Was it a Moen posi-temp cartridge?

My second cartridge is a bit more complicated. The set screw for the handle is rusted and I have not been able to remove it. The screw is slotted. I will try to cut the handle off and see if I can make the slot deeper with a dremmel tool. I don't want to drill it out on fears that I'll damage the theads that I'll need to pull out the cartridge. My easy out on small screws hasn't worked well in the past. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks again! J.B.
Hello Jb Bennett;
I would try cutting the handle as you mentioned. I wouldn't worry about the threads as they are on the old cartridge and have nothing to do with the removal of the cartridge.
Getting the handle off can be the toughest part of the job sometimes.

Thank you, Sir. Answered many questions in a very short period of time.
Thanks for showing me which cartridge I needed! Moen's website didn't specify which one, I ended up buying the wrong cartridge, and now I know which one to correctly get!
Hello Lisa;
The 1225B is the pull out and turn. It is for kitchen, basin and the older style moen bath faucets. The 1222B is the newer style cartridge for the posi-temp bath faucets.
moen does replace them under there warranty if you call the company; they will send one to you in the mail at no charge. Excellent company!

XLTEE47 Home Depot honor free replacement on Meom cartridge when you brought in your old one !
@@stephenlam4529 I read on the Moen site that they will only replace your cartridge if you are the original owner.

Hello Jordan,

Makes all the difference in the world when it comes to removing the cartridge. A little turn back and forth before pulling it out saves a lot of struggle.

Thank you so much, we were getting angry that the old cartridge was not coming out. Little tool = awesome
It helps to know that Moen's faucet handles require a 7/64 allen(hex) wrench, a size NOT included in many sets. Less than a dollar. Buy one before you drive yourself nuts.
Hello Candace Hackett Shively,
So very true!
I just bought another set trying to figure out the correct size. I'm so glad I came across your comment! The set definitely did not include a 7/64.
Candace Hackett Shively womanly attention to detail. :)
I Thank You Again"

Much appreciated this very useful video and the tricks.

Thank you, your video helped me replace my first shower cartridge!! I learned about the difference between the 1222 and the 1225. I also would not have known about making sure the hot water had to be turned a certain way.
Hello Nancy,
You're welcome!
Glad everything worked out for you!
Congrats on the repair!

video over 3 years ago, but still a goodie. it helped clarify whether i needed the puller, since posts on other sites tried to scare people into buying it. the only mistake i made was forcing the cartridge in and breaking the o-ring, but the second one i bought went in well. no leaks.
Hello Michael;
Thanks for the kind words!
Al
This video saved me a lot of hard work today. Thank you 👍

Thank you. This was very helpful and pointed me in the right direction. 1225 did the trick and the project is done perfectly!
Hello Barack Blows,
The cartridge can be difficult to remove for sure.
Hello dmevans42;
Thanks for the kind words!

Excelent instructional vid. I've a pull out faucet, left hot, right cold. with a diverter spout. Would the 1222 cartridge be the correct one?
Hello Lalo Lalo,
You would be looking for a 1225 cartridge for that style Moen.
It pulls out and turns left for hot and right for cold. In the event you install the cartridge and the hot is on the right it is just a matter of turning the center part of the stem 180 degrees. You do have to pull the entire cartridge out. (turn center stem 180 degrees)
Be sure to twist the entire cartridge back forth before trying to pull it out and check inside the faucet body for any pieces of rubber that may have been left behind with a flashlight once removed.
They generally aren't stuck in there to hard
Let me know how you get along....Al
@@TheOldkid888 Thanks I'll try that. To play it safe I'll get a cartridge kit with a couple of extra pins just in case it drops in the hole or breaks.
+lovelylouro
You installed a 1225 cartridge.

You are more than welcome!
Nice to get it repaired regardless of how much fine tuning you had to do. Congrats on that!
Day not learned is a day wasted.

Your video was a great help, thanks! I am sure it saved me alot of frustration

i just replaced mine last night on my shower.
Thank Sharing tips and tricks video is very educational for me

We've just replaced a Moen 1225B cartridge in our stand up shower successfully. We thought by doing so it would fix the problem of only getting hot water out of the shower head. But........the problem still exists. The shower does not produce cold water. This is a secondary shower only used when the grand kids or guests come to visit. Can you suggest a home repair before we have to call in a plumber. Thanks so much!
Great tutorial thank you for the info. My biggest concern was Identifying the valve.

if you are the original owner of the house, Moen products are lifetime warranty.. just call them and ask for the replacement.... hope this help...
Hello lionden4,
They do carry a lifetime warranty. That is correct.
Quite often the hardware store will give you a cartridge if you ask about it being free from the company,
Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al
lionden4 Shut the water off, remove the cartridge bring it to Home Depot plumbing Ariel. People in charge there should give you a replacement free of charge because of Moen cartridge are lifetime warranty. I myself just got a second one. NOT sure other retailer honor this offer ?
Hi, does this require the original receipt? I'm not the original owner of my house and do not have the receipt.
I just sent them an e mail and they sent me new cartridges for every faucet in my house. I never kept the receipts when I replaced the old faucets over the years.
I ended up just walking into Home Depot and asked for the cartridge. The guy just gave me one and asked if I needed anymore? Free of charge.
Hello yamahalowrider,
Water quality has a lot to do with how long a faucet or cartridge will last.
Hello Norm475,
I believe you are correct. I now take them to the hardware stores which generally go good for them.
If you let them you installed it in the past few years they should replace one for you free of charge.
Thanks for the input and enjoy your week! Al
Hi! So if my faucet handle turns and doesn't pull out to turn the faucet on is that 1222B? Thanks😊
Please talk about upgrading from a regular to a Positemp(?) valve in old construction with fiberglass shower insert (6" hole?)
Hello Ishkatan,
Going from a regular moen bath shower faucet is quite simple. the size of the hole is fine.
I will make a video of this in the not too distant future as to the procedure.
I have made a video on installing the a posi-temp in a fiberglass shower that may help you out. This is it....

Hello 1buckdharma;
If it is a Moen cartridge then it should be a 1225B cartridge.
Al
Question do you have a video replacing a 1225 broken inside how to pull the rest out ? Thank you
Hello juanjceballos5536,
I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.

Perfect! Thank you. Only issue now is water pressure in bathroom sick is very low. Any thoughts?
Hello Alice;
Thanks for the kind words!
Hello Alice;
The faucet is turning off so fast that it is causing water hammer.
Hello chris;
Low pressure coming out of the faucet is usually that exact problem.
Hello Mark,
I made a video just for a situation like this...
Hello Michael;
I am planning on making a video tomorrow on another procedure.
Al
Thank u it was helpful
Hey thanks so much for posting this helpful video. Just curious many suggest using a PULLER made for, or by Moen. It seems to me there would be less chance to mess anything up using a puller like a Danco - which gives you more leverage vs yanking with a pliers?. Danco makes one about $11 or, would that just be a waste of money..now knowing that plastic piece may be all one needs? My cartridge MIGHT be in there 20 years..have hard water here, I'm assuming mine may need a bit of force to get out, I haven't tried it yet...no puller needed? Thank you...
Hello Xiong Li,
You're welcome!

One question. First, very good to the point video. You had written on the surface that the valves were laying on the valve part numbers and below tha the letter “B”. What does the letter B stand for? Does the letter go with the numbers or what?
Hello JoeRetired,
I have always included the letter whenever I was looking for a cartridge. The letter "B" I was told means bagged. Not sure if this is correct or not, but you only need the numbers to get the correct cartridge.

Quick question; what if my moen cartridge is neither of these? It’s most like the 1222, but has wings at the outside end- still retained by a clip. The outer portion refuses to be rotated. Any ideas?
So the answer is it’s a 1222B. Hardware store locally has replacements and gave me it happily.

@@TheOldkid888 Thank you for the video. It helped me decide to tackle the leaky faucet cartridge.
Stay dry :)
Hello bike105bike;
That is usually the problem that occurs when you install a new cartridge and still have problems with the faucet.

Great information. Thanks for putting this together.
Hello bethperrotta,
You're welcome!

Nice to get the cartridge for free. Most hardware and big box stores do that.

@mikeplantamura Hello Mike;
If you have to pull the handle out to allow the water to flow and then turn it to the right for cold and left for hot; you will need the 1225B cartridge.

Is there a way to attach a photo of a kitchen faucet with the handle removed - to see if by looking at the top of the cartridge you might know what type it is - so I can try and figure out how to remove it. It is a single handle and it no longer shuts off the water supply.
Hello maureenpeniuk863,
There are so many single lever faucet manufacturers now that it is hard to keep track of. It should say on the faucet somewhere what type it is. Sometimes they etch the name in inconspicuous places.
Have a close look around and even on the back of the faucet. We can try. oldkid888@hotmail.com.

I've changed this cartridge numerous times in our 1960 house. Any reason why it keeps leaking before a year has past? The o rings are always in place.
Hello Cheryl,
I am not really certain why that would happen.
Are you on a well by chance or is it municipal water?
Very fine sediment in the water would do it every time.

Hello beckstead41,
Definitely not a cartridge issue. Not sure exactly what is taking place with your situation.
If you are running hot water alone; it should be close to the same temperature as the other faucets in the house.
Is the water in the basin where the tub is located hotter than the tub?
get back to me when you get a chance.....Al
TheOldkid888 Thanks for your reply. The basins and the shower (separate from bathtub) all get much hotter compared to the bathtub.
I replaced the 1222 with no problem. A couple days later I get a rumbling noise after turning on the faucet about a quarter turn. Rotate to center and all the way over to hot it stops. Why is it doing this?
Hello Scott,
Not exactly sure what is happening there.
Hello Gina;
I would have no problem drinking the water after installing the new cartridge as the grease is very good to adhering to the cartridge and the faucet body. As far as it being 100% safe I cant say that, but personally I would drink for the faucet and have no worries. They use it on all their faucets that re used world wide. All manufacturers of faucets use some type of grease on their faucets.
Thanks for commenting and congrats on making the repair! Al
So if you have a pull out handle its the 1225?
Wouldn't each of these cartridges be for a pull out ?
Hello Fireinahorn,
That is correct.

Kalia 101559 shower diverter… how do you get access to the cartridge?? Can’t get the silver ‘sleeve’ off the valve to change the cartridge. Help!
Hello sandymilne224,
I can't say that I am familiar with the Kalia 101559 shower diverter.
Hello tieweb;
You are more then welcome and thanks for the kind words!
If you have to pull it out to turn it on and then left to right for hot or cold; you need a 1225B cartridge.
If you turn the water to the left to turn it on then you are looking at a 1222B cartridge.

My cartridge is stuck pretty bad and I lost the locking pin down in the wall. Will it hold without the locking pin for a while? Or should I try and buy a replacement for the time being?
Hello Jennifer,
You need the retaining clip. It will NOT hold without it.
You MUST purchase a new retaining clip in order to hold the cartridge in place and turn the water on.
DO NOT try and turn the water on without it.
Any hardware store should have the horseshoe shaped clip.

@@TheOldkid888 thanks for getting back with me! I bought a replacement clip and put it in. I'm pretty frustrated I can't get the old cartridge out... guess it's time to call a plumber haha
Hello Jennifer,
I made a video that may help with the removal of the cartridge.

Let me know how you get along when you get a chance,
Is there a way to determine if you have a 1222 or 1225 without disassembling it? So...I know which one to buy?
Hello Tom Krzemecki,
The 1225 pulls out to turn the water on. The 1222 only turns to allow the water to flow.
The 1222 is only found on tub/shower faucets. All other single lever Moen faucets have the 125 cartridge.
Hope this helps!
