    Thanks for the video.. just in case anyone is wondering and it hasn't been answered yet, the 1222 and 1225 are NOT interchangeable.. they work totally differently and share no replaceable parts.

    Thank you for the clear, concise and detailed directions. I forwarded this to a customer / friend who described a broken cartridge to me and I couldn't take care of him myself. After hundreds of 1225 replacements and 25 years of plumbing, its great to have RUclips to turn to share with people how they can handle things like this themselves, and even better, Make wifey happy with their abilities.

    Well done! At first I wasn't sure why you said to make sure the small hole in the stem is on top but I realized while installing the new valve core that that's how you know the valve is in the "neutral" position so you can put on the knob in the correct orientation without having do do trial and error. One note: Don't use any petroleum products on the valve rubber including the O-rings. Petroleum products includes Vaseline. Petroleum products damage rubber. In fact, I damaged the big O-ring in my whole house water filter before I knew that when I lubed it with Vaseline. Only use silicone grease on rubber.

    ok My cartridge was stuck like the devil himself was holding on to the other end of it.
    Twisting it back and forth helped a little but, what really got it going was squirting a lot of vinegar in around the cartridge. I even put some up in the shower head pipe so it would run down to the cartridge.
    Then, I left it alone for about 40 minutes while I watched plumbing videos. Went back and reefed on her. and boom the devil inside let go and out it came .
    Great video thanks for the pointers.

    I have two bathrooms. Replaced the cartridge in the master bath shower about 8 years ago, and now the hall bathroom shower faucet is leaking a little. This video was a nice refresher on the replacement process. Just one thing you forgot to mention: these cartridges don't always have clear indications on them as to which "side" faces up. It's very important, when you pull out the old cartridge, carefully note how the openings and ports in the cartridge barrel are oriented, and install the new cartridge the same way. If you guess wrong, the Hot and Cold will be reversed, and you will either have to do the job over again, or remember that this shower's hot and cold are reversed until the next time you have to replace the cartridge, which might not be for many years. Don't ask me how I know this.

    Always good to mention at the start of this project to block the drain with a towel or cloth or something so you don't accidentally lose any small parts down the drain. (I see you have a towel there, that's what made me think of it).

    The only number provided on my original Moen cartridge was "12801". After doing some internet research I found that this actually is equivalent to the Moen 1225. I purchased the Danco 88431E Cartridge that compares to the Moen 1225. The only difference I could see was that the new cartridge had 2 more O-rings. It worked just fine.
    As a side note, this may be obvious to some, but not to me, is when shutting off the water supply, I thought that included the need to close the hot water supply also. Later I found out just shutting down the main supply will suffice.

    Take off the shower head and replace with a standard end cap (1/2" black iron cap - less than $2). Take the pin off the cartridge and turn on the main water supply. Wait until the valve is pushed out by water pressure or you can help it out with pliers. (Have someone ready to turn off water supply) Done!

    Retaining pin for shower is brain surgery to get back in, tabs have to be equidistant from legs of retaining pin and it has to click all the way down or collar will not fit over a mm of pin being proud. One on sink, same cartridge, is a breeze. Might need new pin. Looked up on Net and a Plumbing supply wanted $.64 per pin, but $29 to ship! Will try local supply.

      It can be frustrating because you can't really see much. The slot for the retaining pin is 1/4" from the face of the brass valve holder. The two plastic arms must be placed 1/8" below the valve holder face in order to line up.

      No, and there is no guarantee that it's plumbed correctly in the wall. So prior to putting the handle back on the unit turn the water on to the house turn on the shower valve and test it to make sure the hot is on the left and the cold is on the right, if it is not when you have it in the on position just rotate the center shaft 180 degrees and that reverse is it on that particular shower cartridge.

      Justin Kurtz it probably means that the cartridge is not installed all the way. So there might be some debris still inside of the cavity.

    I put it on and the knob is sticking out farther than it did before. Did I not push the cartridge in far enough?

      Im not a plumber but there may be a plastic tab inside your handle to key it to the proper orientation... and that may not be compatible with the part you just replaced... you could probably make it work by modifying the plastic handle or getting a new one.

      Wow! That is a good idea! I saw lots of replacement knobs at Home Depot! Maybe one will fit?
      I talked to Moen and they are sending me a new, "Stop Tube Kit", because they think it might be the stop-tube.

    The screw inside my handle is spinning and not comming out! Feels like the whole cartridge is spinning. What do I do? I can't get the handle off.

    • @willsauers2819

      If you have removed that retainerclip on the top (and possibly bottom) then youll have to either muscle it out or re-plumb with another fixture.

    • @blueeyedsoulman
      @blueeyedsoulman 7 лет назад

      OK, I can see that. Could the retainer clip be out enough that the cartridge could spin around but not be able to come out? I don't have one handy.

    To clean out inside before placing in a new valve cartridge consider using a tampon that has an application plunger. The semi ridge plastic applicator can allow only a portion of the Qtip formed cotton to wipe and locate pieces that broke off from the old cartridge.

    what about cleaning the housing that the cartridge slides into? what's the best way for cleaning any corrosion like built-up mineral deposits? also is there anything else other than plumbers grease? would any kind of silicone base grease work? is there any certain markings so that the cold and hot is correct or just flipping it 180* ?

      For cleaning, I used CLR cleaner. CLR stands for calcium lime rust.
      There's an indentation marking on the one side of the brass stem where the screw goes. The indentation marking looks like a very tiny step. The instruction paper that came with the cartridge mention nothing about this. Strange...

    Do I turn off the main water supply the one by the side of the drive way or the one underground?

    • @PrayForMojo24
      @PrayForMojo24  7 лет назад +2

      ILoveTexas --whichever one turns the main water to your house off. If you pull this part out while the water is on you will be un-pleasantly suprised by the amount of water that comes out. Good luck

    All of the how to videos ignore the very first step. Taking of the screw cover. I'd like to know how to remove it first. Before I try and accidentally break it. I realize it is a very basic step. But it should shown as one of the steps
    anyway.

    IF YOU CAN NOT GET THE LITTLE BRASS HOLDER PIN THING ON, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE PLASTIC TABS POINTING UP AND DOWN. THEN MAKE SURE THE UNIT IS PUSHED BACK FAR ENOUGH TO GO OVER THE PLASTIC TABS. THE BRASS HOLDER THING WILL NOT GO OVER ANYTHING EXCEPT THE TWO PLASTIC TABS. AND THEY HAVE TO POINT UP AND DOWN. :) THANKS!!
