Excellent Video by George The Plumber!! My friends and I enjoy his videos. Very informative, and I'm glad I seen him using this Moen Chateau product because that was the solution I needed! I was contenplating trying to repair the old valve assembly which is an antique. Previous owners upgraded bathroom, but not the faucet! I just installed a Moen Chateau. My faucet assembly was shifted to the right of the spout and showerhead (not all aligned like in the video, so I knew going into this project I may need to open the wall in the closet which I had to do. I previously seen on an "Ask This Old House" episode that with the new plunger diverter on the spout (to send water to showerhead) that sometimes the showerhead will dribble when filling the tub because the water pressure in the house is too high so you need to lower the pressure just to the tub which requires dedicated valves to the tub so you are not reducing pressure other places. After seeing this, I was talking to a friend who also had this experience at his previous house so he had added valves, so my plan was to add valves up front just in case. Ultimately, I did not need to lower pressure so valves were not needed, but they are there now. Better safe than sorry. ***** My other experience was the pipe from the showerhead was too short after removing the old valve! The original American Standard mixing valve from 1980 had threaded fittings into the valve assembly, so these fittings were threaded into the valve and then the copper pipes were soldered into these fittings, so when I un-soldered the shower head pipe from the fitting the pipe was a little more than 1/2" too short for the new Moen valve. I could have further shortened the pipe and then used a 1" long piece of 1/2" copper along with a straight couplingn sleave (no stop type), but then iId be soldering up inside the wall which presented a much higher risk of fire. The wall was built with 2x3, not 2x4 (who does that!?. I decided to open the wall and do everything from the closet which made a much bigger project. I ended up framing and adding a piece of plywood for an access panel if needed in the future. Painted closet and that further added an improvement. To do it over, I would cut the access in from the closet from the start and not make such a large cutout in the shower wall. Nevertheless, this Moen product provided a great solution and upgrade. I definitely recommend this product! I'd also like to mention, I cut the hole in the wall using my Dremmel tool. Bathroom wall was a manufactured product that looks like marble.
Fantastic work George! I do these once every couple of months now that I'm on my own. Used to do 1 or 2 per week when I was working for the local corporate company. I'll be doing this exact job next week. Nice to brush up and prepare myself by watching this video! Thanks for posting!
That plate behind the handle, can you tell me how wide it is left to right? I forget what that's called but I have a two handle Moen set up, very old, and I hope this kit will cover the hole in the wall.
My tub spout versus the new chateau kit seems pretty close, think i could cut the cutouts a little high and move the valve up a bit? Im assuming i can redo the spout connection and add some space between the two
I know, it looks like the beauty plate just screws into the valve body and that's what's securing it depth wise. Maybe I missed something in the fast forwarded portions.
